N.Z. Man Killed In Hovercraft Accident

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Aug. 3 (UPI) — New Zealand authorities say an investigation has begun into the death of a man killed while test-driving a hovercraft.
Investigators say the 40-year-old man was driving the hovercraft he had built from a kit for the first time in West Auckland when a problem with the engine caused a propeller blade to strike his head, decapitating him, 3 News reported Wednesday.
Police said an engineer who is a hovercraft expert was assisting them in their investigation.
“He’s going to come in and have a look at the device and tell us what his feelings are about how it has been built and everything else … how it failed and why it failed,” Sgt. Colin Nuttall said.
A license is not required to buy or operate a hovercraft in New Zealand, 3 News said.
