Biden Collects $2,200 A Month In Rent From Secret Service

It has recently been revealed that Vice President Joe Biden does not just depend upon the Secret Service to protect him and his family — he is also the agency’s landlord.

“Since April, Mr. Biden has collected more than $13,000 from the agency charged with protecting him and his family for use of a rental cottage adjacent to the waterfront home he owns in a Wilmington, Del., suburb,” read an article for The Washington Times.

“Edwin M. Donovan, special agent in charge at the Secret Service’s Office of Government and Public Affairs in Washington, said the agency pays $2,200 in rent per-month, the same amount a previous tenant had paid before moving out.”

According to the article, the Secret Service believes that occupying the cottage affords a “level of security for the Biden family the agency might not have had otherwise.”

“He should be afforded every single protection available to him and his family, as should every vice president and president,” said Leslie Paige, spokeswoman for the Washington-based Citizens Against Government Waste, in an interview with the newspaper. “You’d think the vice president, who shepherded the deficit committee, would think twice about charging the Secret Service rent. Why would he need the money? I don’t get it.”

According to the article, Biden’s mother lived in the cottage until her death in January 2010. On the contract, Biden is not listed as the Vice President, but reportedly as “vendor” — technically making him a Federal contractor.

From the opening paragraph of a CNSNews.com article:

Vice President Joe Biden told people attending an AARP town hall meeting that unless the Democrat-supported health care plan becomes law the nation will go bankrupt and that the only way to avoid that fate is for the government to spend more money.

OK, so that’s not a direct quote from our esteemed Vice President. That’s just what the “journalist” decided to cast the story as. So, what did Joe say, in his own words? Read on:

“Well, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’” Biden said. “The answer is yes, I’m telling you.”

I remember the big joke of the dot.com days, where everybody and their brother was “selling each unit at a loss, but making it up in volume.” That mindset is what Biden’s quote reminds me of. “We’re going broke at the present level of spending, so we have to spend more to stop going broke.”

  • skippy

hey, just wondering….if everyone is supposed to cut back, take pay cuts, lose this benefit and that benefit….WHEN in hell is Washington going to feel any pain??!!! AUTOMATIC RAISES??…give me a break!!! Let the voters vote on that. And don’t EVEN get me started the “retirement benefit packages”……….

    • Altaica

I’d love to see them live on 30k a year like most Americans. I know several companies here in town that haven’t given any of their regular employees a raise in over 3 years because of the economy. How about the government not get one too.

  • Lewis/Virginia

I would like to know if Biden List this Income with The IRS! SOMEBODY PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS! PLEASE!

  • Jay

The National Review’s Byron York takes a look at Joe and Jill Biden’s charitable giving, and the results, well, aren’t all that impressive. Think spare change. Total over 10 years: $3,690.
Per the NR, here is a chart of the Bidens’ giving for the years covered by the tax returns:

    Adjusted
    Gross Income Charity
    1998 $215,432 $195

    1999 $210,797 $120

    2000 $219,953 $360

    2001 $220,712 $360

    2002 $227,811 $260

    2003 $231,375 $260

    2004 $234,271 $380

    2005 $321,379 $380

    2007 $319,853 $995

Total Income=$2,450,042 Total donations to charity=$3,690

    • skippy

wow…what a guy that Joe is. Thanks for the info Jay.

    • TIME

Oh, The Humanity of it all!
The GRACE displayed by Biden is about the same as the class of a warf rat. A whole $3600.00 in gifts to charity, WOW!

      • Drawer22

        @Time -

O’Biden, being so caught up in his generosity, wouldn’t want any mistakes in how large the amount was that he contributed to charity. (Personally, I think it most charitable of the unwashed, American masses to have put O’Biden in office, but that’s another matter entirely.) The amount quoted is $3690, not $3600. Wouldn’t want O’Biden’s true generosity to go unnoticed for the grand sum of an additional $90!

        Cogito, ergo armatus sum!

  • Carolyn

If he can charge the Secret Service rent, shouldn’t we charge him for the protection they provide? Just proves how petty and out of touch he is.

    • Altaica

My thoughts exactly! Normally when you hire a live in body guard you pay them not only salary but also room and board! He should let them live there free of charge as they are essentially live in body guards.

  • Jack

They talk about taxing the rich ? When are they going to start paying taxes like the rest of us ??? Who are they calling rich ? God Help us !

    • Dan az

      Jack
Sense gubmnt employees don’t pay taxes that would explain why they don’t want to leave. And the fact that previous tennant’s could possibly mean that his mother paid because who would he rent to other than someone that he had employed as a care taker or a mother that wasn’t aloud to live in the main house with so many bedrooms.Makes one wonder were his morals lie.

  • Jay

It’s well-known that Joe Biden has said he wants to be involved in every decision that Barack Obama makes, and he wants to be in the room for every single meeting, but I don’t think anyone realized how serious he was about it…until now.

  • Jay

Joe Biden opened his mouth the other day and something foolish came out. From the Associated Press:

Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans. . . .

“We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people,” Biden said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: “It’s time to be patriotic . . . time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”

Since Biden is resting his case on patriotism rather than economic principles, let’s analyze his statement in those terms.

If paying high taxes is patriotic, then Biden and Barack Obama, in putting forward a plan they claim will result in lower taxes for 95% of Americans, seem to be trying to undermine American patriotism.

In order to avoid this problem, the AP infers that Biden has a double standard in which paying higher taxes is patriotic only for “wealthier” Americans. But it seems odd to say that patriotism demands something of one class of people, while making no such demand on everyone else.

What is more, Obama and Biden are not proposing higher taxes in order to serve some common purpose such as national defense. Rather, what they want, as Biden makes clear, is outright redistribution: take money from a minority and give it to “middle-class people.” As Forbes’s Susan Lee says, many of the Obama-Biden “tax cuts” are actually credits, often “refundable” credits, which is to say, subsidies.

The Obama-Biden tax plan consists in asking a select group of Americans to sacrifice while effectively telling everyone else to go shopping.

Where have we heard this before? And can we really afford four more years of the same?

    • Ret

I think it’s a great idea. Lets start with him. He can show the way by starting with giving the rental income back to the government.

      • eddie47d

How many of you will be giving back any money you make from renting out to someone? You tout Capitalism then condemn someone who practices it. Then again most folks who rent their apartments or homes gouge the heck out of other peoples money. Alot of slick capitalists have gotten rich doing just that.

      • Jeep

eddie, you are probably correct in that what biden is doing is not illegal. It does, however, smack of being immoral. That being said, there are many other perks that govt officials receive that need scrutiny. Everything from the number of congressional and white house staffers to booze and czars and cars. Govt spends a lot of money on perks.

      • ProudChristianAmerican

eddie, i believe in capitolism, however, when it comes to the likes of Boden and the rest of the mrxist, I think we can and should expect them to be held to the standard that they want to hold successful folks like myself. If they want to take my money and give it away, I think we have every right to expect them to give up their money first. Whenever we make such a demand, folks like you eddie come out and talk smack. I just wish that the left would hold themselves to the same standard that they are trying to hold me.

      • eddie47d

Basically what you are saying is that the Secret Service should stay at Motel 6 and bill it to the taxpayer. Plus travel expenses to the Biden residence.Either way it involves the taxpayer. Whether we pay Biden or Motel 6. It could be that Biden is a craftier capitalist than you are and you don’t like liberals making money. That seems to be part of the issue here.Let’s also make it clear that Cheney still receives Secret Service protection until January 2019 so let’s look into that arrangement while we are at it.

      • lkar

eddie47 I understand that this is legal (assuming no double dip scam) and capitalism. But the outrage is the VP stands up and advocates “shared sacrifice”. The man values his protection but wants to be paid for housing that protection. OK, but do not tell Americans to give up their valued things so we can “share the nation’s pain”. Defending a hypocrite still makes him a hypocrite.

      • Dan az

        eddiee
They weren’t using tax payers dollars to line their pockets were they?

      • eddie47d

Could be…the article didn’t say so why don’t you ask Marcy and let us know why she left that information out.

  • betty

Hmmmm……is this called “double dipping” in some businesses? I’m just asking.

  • Lostwages

Biden is no different then the rest of the money hungry socialists running our country at this time. They all should be arrested on charges for treason against the U.S. constitution and the people that live by it! They all belong behind bars for what they are doing to our nation and other nations around the world!

  • Sniper

    Sound familiar…?
    Let them eat cake…

  • home boy

the big question is will this money show up on his income tax forms? maybe he will have some compassion and donate the money to a charity.

  • Wapitiman

This man is an undisputed leader and icon. A person all Americans can really look up to. Not only is he screwing the government royally but his generosity knows no bounds. It’s my understanding that he contributes a whopping 1/10 of 1% of his income to charity. That’s one dollar out of a thousand, folks. Yessir, a real American role model.

    • lkar

A tightwad with his money, but a progressive (read spendaholic) with other peoples money.

  • JMJ

He CHARGED his mother to live in this house? What a wonderful son. I’m so happy that foot-in-the-mouth Biden is V.P.. Maybe we should charge Canada and Mexico for being our neighbors. (JMJ)

    • lkar

She probably got social security and he wanted to make sure she paid her “fair share”.

  • Mary Williams

I agree with Debbie and should anything surprise us anymore. What happened to moral standards. He is getting the benefits of the government’s help plus making a profit for himself too. . He already gets a lot of benefits that us other working people don’t get for free.Something needs to give or we will end up like the Roman Empire- Fall.

  • http://aol.com sean murrey ILLInio

yes it is ilegall what do you expect from a crook like this along with obummer he said we are terroists he is the village idiot.

  • Cindy

Another waste of our hard earned money. The secret service should be outside/inside Mr. Venders waterfront home. Another loop hole that needs to be closed. His new name should be Vice Vender instead of president.

  • Clint

Sounds like a CONFLICT of INTEREST and should immediately be halted.

  • JH

I didn’t know he was relevant enough to need protection.

    • Ret

      Thanks, needed a laugh.

  • Les

They told you they were good for business, their business. These simple public servants are really ruffing it so they need all the help they can get making ends meet. So please give them a break – ROTFLMAO

  • s c

It’s immoral, TIME and Debbie. It’s not illegal. Of course, since Motormouth Joe is RICH, and has lost touch with reality, it does seem a bit odd. Then again, as with the characters in Orwell’s 1984 ‘some folks is just better than others.’
Joe, Joe, Joe. Some people are blessed with common sense, and some are content being born with both feet in the their mouth. Under other circumstances, you and your ‘boss’ would be like Laurel and Hardy or Abbot and Costello. Sadly, you two are anything but funny.
The Secret Service has my sympathy. They’re charged with protecting #1 and #2. The thing is, Joe, you’re RICH. You can afford to take it out of your vast wealth. In so many things, you just don’t get it. Does this make you a closet capitalist?
What the #^*@, Joe. You’re already collecting rent. Why not charge them for the food they eat. Make up reasons why the rent needs to go up. Are you SURE you’re not a closet capitalist? How can you call yourself one of the ‘elite’ when you’re acting like someone you’re supposed to HATE?

    • Jay

sc, way to tease-out the hypocrisy of Ob’s administration! They are, in fact, closet capitalists, in garter-belts and stockings!

    • lkar

I wonder if he reports this as income on his tax return?

      • http://msn KEn

WHAT TAX RETURN, THE #$%^^&&*(() PROBABLY DON’T EVEN FILE A TAX RETURN

      • Dan az

        KEn
I think that would be listed under shovel ready jobs.I seriously doubt he pays taxes and we all payed for them to guard his sorry azz so we payed for them to stay there. And my guess his mother paid for room and board sense she wasn’t aloud to stay in the main house.

      • Ret

I’m sure it’s a write-off. Love the part that his mother lived there and he charged her the same amount of rent???? Reminds me of Rose Kennedy charging her staff if they drank a cup of coffee. It just gets patheticer and patheticer (my new word).

    • Michael J.

      sc,
It’s just Liberal Staus Quo, spend our money like drunken sailors, yet when it comes to spending their own money, it goes through their hands like glue. Joe’s probably still got the first dollar he ever cheated someone out of.

  • 101stRECON68

Man these Washington fatcats really have a sweet deal you know. They should thank the generous citizens of this country for treating them like lords. Oh I forgot, We are the vassals DAMN!

    • slapjack

TERM LIMITS will prevent all the senile old farts we have up there now. TWO terms and you go home forever.

      • Phyllis

I think it has more to do with corruption than senility.

  • mark

Oh, this is definitely an impeachable event. Plus he helped established a totalitarian dictatorship that has stripped us of all our rights and killed all the old people in America (there are no more left after Obama’s death panels. The health police lined up and shot all the old people in my state). We have no more legislature, no more elections, no free press, no free blogs….wait why is this one still up and runnnig. Oh well, don’t worry Obama and Biden will shut this down any minute now. And then they will round us all up and execute us. It’s all part of their plan. And since we are all doomed, anyway, who cares about this Secret Service rent to the VP. I have to go and buy more canned goods.

    • Jay

mark, at times you surprise me with your accurate assessment of OB and his administration! Atta boy!

      • Dan az

        Jay :) ;)

    • Michael J.

      mark,
No,No,No, once again you’ve taken the story out of context. The author is trying to relay the fact that prior to the Secret Services arrival, Joe’s mother was in charge of security and he charged her $2,200.00 a month for rent plus utilities.

  • Debbie

Amazing. I would think that would be illegal.

    • eddie47d

If that is their (Secret Service) primary home and Biden is offering a place to live then so what if he is charging rent. Any good capitalist would do the same. The article didn’t say (the usual “shocker” of leaving important information out)whether these agents were getting a stipend from the government to cover their rent. We all have to live somewhere so unless someone is double dipping then it is a non issue.

      • slapjack

eddie, what terrorist organization in their right mind would want anything to do with Biden??? I seriously think this asnine ingrate should foot the bill for the onsight protection. It would take my Sherriff dept 15 minutes to get to me and I pay for this with my taxes. I personnally rely on Smith and Wesson, Glock, and 20 guage. All you Liberals expect the GOVERMENT to kiss your asses 24/7/365 forever. Time for everyone to get off the Government titt. Even Joe Schmoe Ben Biden

      • Bob

I totally agree that Mr Biden should be thrown out of office and let him handle his own security. He gets a darn good salary and now he needs to get rent from the Secret Service, I think it is a crying shame as there so many people out there that need jobs and money to pay their bills. And this co called politician who is supposely working for us is being Over paid. He should pay us for allowing him to hold his position. I Love this Country But I sure HATE this Government we now have in office. We need to get all the Republicans and Demopcratics out of office….

      • Terry

I am a landlord and we need to be licensed, inspected and held to building codes in order to rent our units (apartments as well as individual homes). I wonder if he is licensed and if he shows the rental income on his taxes. If it his individual residence I hope that he is not trying to get write offs and maintenance expenses.

      • Dan az

        Eddiee
Kid he charge his mother?Aren’t the Clinton’s paid nearly $20,000 per month rent by the Secret Service for the “privilege” of protecting them in Chappaqua? It’s time to end welfare payments to the ruling elite.I’m sure you will put a spin on this one too!

      • Lipstick

But this man and his party hates capitalists. If they can protect him he can afford to let them stay there for free or maybe half price. Actually he is so nutty I cannot see any sane terrorist wanting this man for anything. He would be an expendable person. We cannot deal with terrorists. That is against the law. Let him fend for himself.

    • Karolyn

      Why?

      • Push comes to Shove

Mt question is for any P or VP, where does the SS stay when they are protecting them? I wonder if GW Bush collected rent everytime they went to his Ranch? That is a rhetorical question BTW because we know if he did he would have been vilified and labeled a crony capitalist pig by the left wing media and pundits? I bet they stayed at his ranch free of charge and i bet Clinton never charged them either. Biden is just like the people he porports to help, a pig chowing at the gov’t trough.

      • Michael

Actually the Clintons required the Secret Service to build a separate building on their property and then charged them rent equivalent to their monthly payments from the purchase of the mansion. Not only were the taxpayers paying for their protection, we were buying their private estate for them.

      • independant thinker

Michael you must have used the tabloids for your facts. Do your fact checking again.

  • TIME

    • lkar

      Shared sacrifice!!!

    • wandamurline

The tax payer gets screwed again and again. First, we are paying the salary of this imbicile and we are paying the secret service to protect him, so Biden is now charging us to house the secret service. How about this? How about we don’t house the secret service, how about he protects himself without our help. A much better scenario.

      • Terry

        GREAT IDEA!!!

The jack-asses we have in office now are nothing more than welfare whores. They want hard working people to pay for sorry folks who don`t want to work, and in return Bidin and Obama expect their welfare money too. I have never seen such low class people in my life.
