Tropical Storm Emily Moving Slowly In Caribbean Sea

MIAMI, Aug. 2 (UPI) — Tropical storm warnings and watches were posted for several Caribbean islands as Tropical Storm Emily moved west Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.
Emily, with sustained winds of 40 mph, was expected to move across the northeastern Caribbean Sea Tuesday and approach the island of Hispaniola Tuesday night or Wednesday, the center in Miami said in its 5 a.m. Eastern time advisory.
Tropical storm warnings were in effect for Guadeloupe, Desirade, Les Saintes, Marie Galante, Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the Dominican Republic.
Tropical storm watches were in effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua and Haiti.
Emily, about 245 miles south east of San Juan, Puerto Rico, could slowly gather strength over the next day or so until it makes landfall, the center said.
Tropical storm-force winds could blow across the warning area Tuesday, forecasters said. Emily also is expected to produce 2-4 inches of rain in the northern Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands. Between 4-6 inches of rain are expected in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with isolated amounts up to 10 inches possible.
The rain could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, the center said.
A storm surge will raise water levels by 1-2 feet above normal tide levels in the tropical storm warning area, the center said. Near coasts, the surge will be accompanied by large and dangerous waves.
