Biden Rents Cottage To Secret Service
August 1, 2011 by Personal Liberty News Desk
Vice President Joseph Biden Jr. is collecting rent from the U.S. Secret Service, according to The Washington Times. The Secret Service is currently paying $2,200 a month for a cottage next to Biden’s home in Wilmington, Del., reports the newspaper.
A special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Office of Government and Public Affairs, Edwin Donovan, told the newspaper that the location allows the agency to provide a high level of security to the Biden family. However, when asked if this type of rental agreement was typical for the Secret Service, Donovan only replied that the agency was paying rent because it was a rental property, reports the newspaper.
Biden has been widely criticized for this rental agreement. He was recently appointed by the President to lead the Campaign to Cut Waste, which aims to eliminate government waste of taxpayer dollars according to USA Today. Many people, such as Leslie Paige, spokeswoman for Citizens Against Government Waste, view this rental charge as an instance of wasting government money, according to the The Washington Times.
The newspaper reports that the rental contract is worth up to $66,000 and will expire in 2013.
