House Postpones Vote On Boehner's Debt Ceiling Bill

The House of Representatives postponed the vote on Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) much-discussed debt ceiling plan as there was not enough support for it to pass.
Some GOP leaders were scrambling to get enough votes to pass the bill, which some members of Congress did not think cut spending enough in exchange for raising the debt ceiling, according to The Washington Times. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said that if the debt ceiling is not raised by Aug. 2, the country would default on its obligations.
The news source reports that many Republican members of Congress felt that leadership should not have abandoned the Cut, Cap and Balance plan, which the House had previously passed.
Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) defended Boehner’s bill, saying that it accomplished a number of GOP goals.
“We got rid of the tax increase, no naked debt limit increase and now we’ve got a bill that does what we said it should do. Is it perfect, like John said? No, it’s not. But it’s a good step on spending cuts,” he told Fox News.
Making matters more difficult for the GOP is that the Senate is controlled by Democrats, who said they would table the Boehner bill.
