HELSINGBORG, Sweden, July 28 (UPI) — A 15-year-old Swedish boy on appeal was found guilty of child exploitation because he had sex with his underage girlfriend.
The Court of Appeal for Skane and Blekinge reversed an acquittal handed down in May by the Helsingborg District Court, the Helsingborg Dagbladet reported Wednesday.
The teen said he and his 13-year-old girlfriend were in love and had consensual sex in February, but the girl denied it.
The court said there is no evidence the sex was, in fact, consensual, and the age difference between the boy, who was 15 years and 5 months old at the time of the incident, and the girl, who was 13 years and 10 months old, is great enough to hold the boy accountable for his actions.
Swedish law provides the age of consent is 15, and violators may be charged with sexual exploitation of a child, or, in more egregious cases, child rape.
The boy was sentenced to community service.
