Federal Firearm Licensee To Operate From D.C. Police Headquarters

Washington has restrictive handgun laws.A licensed gun dealer in the District of Columbia may open shop in police headquarters, according to The Washington Times. Charles Sykes Jr., the city’s only Federal firearms licensee, lost his lease in April and has been unable to find a new location, leaving D.C. with a de facto handgun ban, reports the newspaper.

Federal law requires that gun owners transfer firearms between states through Federal firearms licensees. District residents have been unable to legally transfer guns into the city since Sykes lost his lease, according to The Times. This placed the city in possible violation of a 2008 United States Supreme Court case decision, which prohibited the District’s long-standing handgun ban, reports the newspaper.

However, the new plan has not appeased everyone. Alan Gottlieb, founder of gun-rights group the Second Amendment Foundation, viewed the solution as a method of circumventing the Supreme Court decision, according to Fox News.

“D.C. is still trying to tap dance on the lack of gun ban with a monopoly on gun transactions,” he told the news agency.

It is unclear if Sykes will accept this solution, according to The Times. If he does accept, Sykes will process paperwork and will not have guns for sale on display, reports the newspaper.

    Read elsewhere that the MPD HQ is within 300ft of a church which would mean no firearms transactions allowed.

    Let’s theorize a bit here. If the guy in DC operates his biz out of a police station (headquarters, no less), then it would be nice to know what happens if someone buys a weapon at the police station and goes on a killing spree.
    According to typical progressive “logic,” then the police must be indicted for being an accessory to the crime. Is this a test scenario for haters of the 2nd Amendment? Or, could it be that law enforcement in DC is so hard up for money that they’re willing to let someone operate a weapons biz in their headquarters? Somehow, this sounds too much like a Rod Serling plot in an upcoming Twilight Zone episode.
