GOP-Led House Cuts $227 Million From 2012 Budget

The Republican-led House of Representatives approved a bill on Friday that will cut $227 million from the legislative branch, according to The Hill. The news source reports that the bill was approved 252-159 and will cut 6.4 percent from the 2012 budget.
The bill aims to cut several Congressional agencies by 6 percent, such as the Library of Congress and the Congressional Budget Office, according to media outlet. The legislation will also require agencies to justify all bonuses paid out, due to concern about the size of performance-based bonuses given by agencies, reports the news source.
Many Democrats argued against the bill, stating that it will cause layoffs and pay cuts for staff members, according the media outlet. Representative Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) told The Hill that these complaints were due to the Democrats’ desire for increased taxes and continued spending.
The new bill will lower the legislative branch budget to $3.3 billion, which will affect most of the branch’s support services. Representative Ander Crenshaw (R-Fla.) wrote the bill and hopes it will lead the way for further cuts throughout the government, according to The Associated Press.
