Mayoral Candidate Proposes Steep Bullet Tax

Baltimore boasts some of the worst crime statistics in the country. An investment news website, 24/7 Wall St, ranked Baltimore as No. 8 on its 2011 list of the 10 most dangerous American cities, citing the fact that the Maryland city has the fourth-worst murder rate in the country. So it’s unsurprising that a Mayoral candidate would propose a tough plan to combat the city’s crime rates.

However, Democrat Otis Rolley’s plan includes an unusual proposal: a tax on bullets.

“Otis Rolley said he would, if elected, propose a $1 per bullet tax on all bullet purchases in the city,” read an article on WBALtv.com, the website for a local Baltimore news station. “Rolley said the measure would cause a decrease in ‘random firings that too often happen around holidays’ and put a high price tag on the cost of committing a crime.”

“Increasing the cost of guns won’t work because many criminals don’t purchase new guns and they can be borrowed or even rented in some areas. Therefore, as Mayor, Otis will move to impose a $1 per bullet tax (or about $50 per pack),” the plan reads. “That will increase substantially the financial cost of committing a crime and, unlike guns, bullets cannot be shared after their initial use.”

The plan also proposes the establishment of a Public Safety Cabinet, increasing employment for ex-offenders and improving training and pay for the Baltimore Police Department

Do criminals actually pay tax on their black market purchases? Besides they can just as easily steal the bullets as they do the guns.

I guess Baltimore residents are going to have to “Bite the Bullet” ..right ?

  • JimH

I guess Baltimore thugs will just have to rob more people to pay for their bullets.
Hindering law abiding people doesn’t fight crime.

While that closet Nazi is still on the topic of doing specific things to get results, the people of Maryland need to impose a STUPIDITY tax on their “leaders.”
Apparently, Otis Rolley is so off-the-chart STUPID [ala Jackson-Lee/Pelosi/Reid] that he thinks he can control crime by imposing an upfront “fine” on bullets. Mr. Rolley must be on Bummer’s short list of prospective czars.
Certain people in America look at crime, and they consistently misunderstand who’s responsible. It is NOT the “good” people” who commit crime, you Bummer wannabe.
Bad people (career criminals) who have access to weapons and ammunition 24 hours a day are the ones who commit most crimes in America, you pathetic excuse for a human. Politicians like you have no clue and never will. LOSERS like you always make things WORSE. Back off, and get yourself a real job.
