Herb May Stop The Spread Of Brain Tumors

July 18, 2011 by

Tests conducted on mice showed that those with brain tumors who were treated with indirubin survived significantly longer than those that did not receive the treatment.Indirubin, the active ingredient in an herb used in traditional Chinese remedies, is the newest discovery in the fight against brain tumors.

Researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center found that the compound blocks the migration of glioblastoma and endothelial cells, two types of cells that aid in the growth of a brain tumor. This may lead to changes in the treatment of brain tumors.

Indirubin is the active ingredient in the Indigo plant, and has been used in Chinese remedies for treating chronic myeloid leukemia. Tests conducted on mice showed that those with brain tumors who were treated with indirubin survived significantly longer than those that did not receive the treatment. Furthermore, the tumor, which was located on one hemisphere of the brain, did not migrate to the other hemisphere after being treated with indirubin.

E. Antonio Chiocca M.D., Ph.D., one of the lead researchers on the study, which was reported in the online journal Cancer Research, believes that these findings may revolutionize tumor treatment.

“Our findings suggest that indirubins offer a novel therapeutic strategy for these tumors that simultaneously targets tumor invasion and angiogenesis,” said Chiocca in a statement.

So, they isolate it, make a chemical clone in the lab and patient it.
Then charge outragious prices for it, so it may as well naver have been “found”. All this and probably at taxpaters expense via federal grants…….shame! shame! shame!

    • YOU CANNOT PATENT A PLANT GROWING IN NATURE’S FIELD– ANY MORE THAN WATER OR SALT. YOU CAN PATENT MOST PROCESSES FOR CONVERTING THE PLANT INTO A MEDICINE OR USEFUL PRODUCTS. Panax quinquefolium (GINSENG) IS AN EXAMPLE OF A PLANT ALLEGED TO HAVE CURATIVE OR TONIC USES FOR HUNDREDS OF MALADIES. PATENTED VERSIONS OF DRUGS CONTAINING GINSENG EXTRACTIVES ARE INNUMERABLE, WORLDWIDE. IN MEDICAL PRODUCTS, THE RATIONALES FOR PATENTIBILITY ARE COMPLEX–BUT CAN BE FUNDAMENTALLY REDUCED TO THE QUESTION: “CAN THE PROCESS BE SEPARATED FROM THOSE ALREADY PATENTED, BY THE TWEEDLE DE DEE METHOD VS. THE TWEEDLE DE DUM METHOD?

MOST STATES HAVE HAD THE PLANT LISTED AS ENDANGERED– DUE TO IT’S OVER-GATHERING FOR CHINESE HERBAL MANUFACTURERS. ABOUT TWENTY YEARS BACK– BEFORE THE PLANT WAS LISTED AS ENGDANGERED — I SPOKE WITH A CHINESE BUYER,THAT I BUMPED INTO AT A WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA COUNTRY STORE, AND ASKED: “CAN YOU TRUTHFULLY TELL ME WHAT BENEFITS ARE PRODUCED BY GINSING.

“IT’S VALUE” HE SAID WITH A BASHFUL GRIN. “IS IF BUY AND SELL IT, THEN IT WILL CURE YOUR POVERTY. ITS ONLY BENEFIT IS TO MAKE MONEY.”

THEN HE PROCEEDED TO TELL, ME IN VERY BROKEN ENGLISH, THAT ITS MEDICINAL VALUE WAS PURELY PSYCHOSOMATIC (THAT’S WHERE HIS ENGLISH STRUGGLED MOST.) “BUT, SOME ARE MADE BETTER BECAUSE THEY THINK IT WILL MAKE THEM BETTER.”

SO SAY, ALSO, THE MANY OF WORLD MEDICAL SPECIALISTS– BUT MANY OF THESE TELL THEIR PATIENTS, “IF YOU BELIEVE IT HELPS, AND IT’S NOT TOO EXPENSIVE, TAKE IT–BUT DO NOT STOP TAKING THE MEDICINES I PRESCRIBE– THEY HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO HELP, WHETHER YOU BELIEVE IT OR NOT.”

Indirubin, Component Of Chinese Herbal Remedy, Might Block Brain Tumor’s Spread, Study Suggests
ScienceDaily (July 12, 2011) — The active ingredient in a traditional Chinese herbal remedy might help treat deadly brain tumors, according to a new study by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center — Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC — James).

      Brain tumor
      Tumor suppressor gene
The researchers discovered that the compound, indirubin, both blocks the migration of glioblastoma cells, preventing their spread to other areas of the brain, and the migration of endothelial cells, preventing them from forming the new blood vessels that the tumor needs to grow.

Glioblastomas occur in about 18,500 Americans annually and kill nearly 13,000 of them yearly. Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and lethal form of the malignancy, with an average survival of 15 months after diagnosis.

The research is published online in the journal Cancer Research.

“We have pretty good methods to stop glioblastoma from growing in the human brain, but these therapies fail because tumor cells migrate from the original site and grow elsewhere in the brain,” says co-principal investigator Dr. E. Antonio Chiocca, professor and chair of neurological surgery and co-director of the Dardinger Center for Neuro-oncology and Neurosciences.

“Our findings suggest that indirubins offer a novel therapeutic strategy for these tumors that simultaneously targets tumor invasion and angiogenesis,” Chiocca says.

“This study shows for the first time that drugs of the indirubin family may improve survival in glioblastoma, and that these agents inhibit two of the most important hallmarks of this malignancy — tumor-cell invasion and angiogenesis,” says co-principal investigator Dr. Sean Lawler, senior scientist and group leader of the Translational Neurooncology Group at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine.

Indirubin is derived from the Indigo plant. It is the active ingredient in the Chinese herbal remedy called Dang Gui Long Hui Wan, which is used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia.

Chiocca, Lawler and their collaborators used multiple glioblastoma cell lines and two animal models to examine three derivatives of indirubin. Key findings include the following:

When human glioblastoma cells were transplanted into one brain hemisphere of mice, indirubin-treated animals survived significantly longer than controls and showed no migration of tumor cells to the opposite hemisphere.
In a separate experiment, indirubin reduced the migration of tumor cells by 40 percent in treated animals versus controls.
Treated tumors showed a lower density of blood vessels, and new blood-vessel growth was reduced up to three-fold in intracranial tumors, depending on the tumor-cell line.
A laboratory assay showed that indirubins reduced endothelial-cell migration by 52 to 41 percent compared with untreated controls.
“Overall, our findings suggest that indirubins reduce tumor invasion and tumor vasculature because of their antimigratory effects on both tumor and endothelial cells,” Chiocca says.

Science News Stem Cells Restore Cognitive Abilities Impaired by Brain Cancer Treatment
ScienceDaily (July 15, 2011) — Human neural stem cells are capable of helping people regain learning and memory abilities lost due to radiation treatment for brain tumors, a UC Irvine study suggests.

        Embryonic stem cell
        Neural development
        Pupillary reflex
Research with rats found that stem cells transplanted two days after cranial irradiation restored cognitive function, as measured in one- and four-month assessments. In contrast, irradiated rats not treated with stem cells showed no cognitive improvement.

“Our findings provide solid evidence that such cells can be used to reverse radiation-induced damage of healthy tissue in the brain,” said Charles Limoli, a UCI radiation oncology professor.

Study results appear in the July 15 issue of Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Radiotherapy for brain tumors is limited by how well the surrounding tissue tolerates it. Patients receiving radiation at effective levels suffer varying degrees of learning and memory loss that can adversely affect their quality of life.

“In almost every instance, people experience severe cognitive impairment that’s progressive and debilitating,” Limoli said. “Pediatric cancer patients can experience a drop of up to three IQ points per year.”

For the UCI study, multipotent human neural stem cells were transplanted into the brains of rats that had undergone radiation treatment. They migrated throughout the hippocampus — a region known for the growth of new neurons — and developed into brain cells.

Researchers assessed the rats one month and four months after transplantation, noting enhanced learning and memory abilities at both intervals.

Additionally, they found that transplanting as few as 100,000 human neural stem cells was sufficient to improve cognition after cranial irradiation. Of cells surviving the process, about 15 percent turned into new neurons, while another 45 percent became astrocytes and oligodendrocytes — cells that support cerebral neurons.

Most notably, Limoli said, he and his colleagues discovered that about 11 percent of the engrafted cells expressed a behaviorally induced marker of learning, indicating the functional integration of those cells into memory circuits in the hippocampus.

“This research suggests that stem cell therapies may one day be implemented in the clinic to provide relief to patients suffering from cognitive impairments incurred as a result of their cancer treatments,” Limoli said. “While much work remains, a clinical trial analyzing the safety of such approaches may be possible within a few years, most likely with patients afflicted with glioblastoma multiforme, a particularly aggressive and deadly form of brain cancer.”

Munjal Acharya, Lori-Ann Christie, Mary Lan and Erich Giedzinski of UCI and John Fike and Susanna Rosi of UC San Francisco contributed to the study, which was funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Energy.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine we mix 3 parts Indigo (Qin Dai) with 7 parts vaseline and apply to psoriasis, wrap the area because indigo is a dark blue dye, and it helps to calm and control psoriasis and stop the itching. Psoriasis is not curable but this simple formula is inexpensive and works and no smell either. Remember, our drugs comes from herbs which are leaves, twigs, flowers, roots, etc. In TCM, they do not kill nor harm you; can’t say the same about drugs using them or making synthetic drugs from them.
