It’s A Start
June 24, 2011 by Bob Livingston
President Barack Obama’s decision to bring home 10,000 of the 33,000 “surge” troops in Afghanistan by the end of the year and the remainder by September 2012 is obviously a political ploy. Regardless, it’s a start.
The mission’s accomplished (apologies to President George W. Bush). Osama bin Laden is dead. Obama told us so a few weeks ago. The Taliban cut and ran to Pakistan.
Since then, we’ve been fighting the tribes that make up the barbaric state of Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. Nation-building in a country that, for the most part, hasn’t advanced much beyond the 10th century is a fool’s errand.
History is rife with empires that crashed against the rocks of the Afghanistan mountains.
Of course, removing the surge troops will leave about 70,000 still in the combat zone. We’re still fighting wars in Iraq, Pakistan, Libya and Yemen. Billions of dollars a day are spent so America can control — or attempt to control — what goes on in lands far away.
It’s a start, Mr. President, but that’s all it is. Bring them all home: from Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Yemen and Syria. And while you’re at it, bring home those “protecting” Europe from the threat that ended with the demise of the Cold War. And bring home those in Japan and South Korea and wherever they are supporting Pax Americana.
It’s time for empire America to return to its republican roots.
