Atlantic Hurricane Season Under Way

June 1 marks start of Atlantic hurricane seasonHurricane season along the Atlantic coast is officially under way, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has predicted a tumultuous six-month stretch.

According to The Associated Press, the NHC has forecast that the storm season will be busier than normal, with as many as six major hurricanes expected to hit the East Coast. The agency reported that climate patterns known as El Niño and La Niña are expected to have neutral impact this season, which complicates long-term predictions.

The last time the storm forces were neutral was in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita ravaged the Gulf Coast, the news provider reported.

In order to avoid catastrophic results in the event of a natural disaster, HurricaneSafety.org recommends that citizens should bolster their self-survival skills. The source suggests that individuals should start gathering supplies, prepare their homes for a potential emergency and educate family members about proper response procedures before, during and after a hurricane.

Creating a family disaster plan can help save lives. Every member of the household should know where to go, whether it’s a neighbor’s house or an underground shelter, if a hurricane hits.

According to the website, every household should designate an out-of-state friend or relative to assume the role of the “family contact.” Long-distance calls are often the easiest to make in the wake of a disaster, and the out-of-state contact can help orchestrate recovery efforts and inform other family members about their loved one’s safety and whereabouts.

    Capt Turbo: Be careful what you post here, some of these folks may live on the waters edge and start digging those underground shelters you speak of.That’s a bad place to be in a hurricane with tidal surge.The thought was nice though.

      It is so true that we don’t have many underground shelters here. When it comes to a hurricane smart people don’t stay around for the storm. They get out of dodge ! We usually have plenty of warning to get out so going to a neighbors basement is not going to happen either. We are talking hurricane here not a tornado. I don’t know where some of these people get their ideas ! I say to them come on down and try out a hurricane, it will be an eye opener !

    Most are falling for the propaganda. We will make someone in Britain listen to us as we allow the Brits to define what makes a person smart enough and experienced enough. Only content matters!

    Ill taught Libs and Christians produce the most foolish hearts. One line scripture and buzz phrases are served as applications to all things. Jesus has been quoted many times; “is it not written?”, “have you not read?”

      I have and gave allot of suggestions also.
      This one in particular that 10% is not enough we need to start at 50%.
      Since the economic downturn began in December of 2007, the private sector workforce has shrunk by more than 6 percent. Over the same period, the federal government’s workforce (excluding Census and Postal workers) grew by nearly 12 percent, adding 230,000 new federal employees, to a total of more than 2 million workers. President Obama’s 2012 budget proposes adding another 15,000 federal workers. The failed 2009 stimulus bill showed that government-funded employment is no substitute for real market-driven private sector job creation, and government spending to support federal jobs has a crowd-out effect on private employment. Substantial savings could be achieved by reducing the number of federal employees by 10 percent over the next 3 years. Reductions can be made by attrition, hiring only one new federal employee for every three federal workers who retire or leave federal employment.
      I also use numbers usa to inform my reps and governor and obumer.Don’t know if it dose any good but it makes me feel good.Every time I write to them there seems to be an increase of helicopters over me maybe just paranoid but it just gives me more reason to write more. :)

    If you research a little you will see in 2010 there was a disaster every month.This year I would suspect that we will see more of the same and then some.Think about what it cost and where they are going to get it,does increase in ceiling come to mind?Blame it on the weather blame it on bush or Reagan it doesn’t matter all it takes now is one more thing to break this country.Read this article on Agenda 21 and you will see it all maakes sense.

    Very few underground shelters in Florida.

      Capt Turbo,
      I think in the case of a hurricane it is important to keep your gas tank full incase you have to head out. Also keep an extra can of gas in the garage ready to slip in the trunk incase you have to leave. If staying at home have several cans of gas stored in the garage or a shed for using your generator. Most oldtimer are usually prepared it is the new commer that is full of “I’m not leaving, I will stay right here and they go down and by an extra loaf of bread a few bottles of water and some peanut butter and jelly and they are ready to fight the wind !” I would like to see anyone in their basement when the storm surge comes !

        Granny, it does sound silly because we think of hurricanes in basically basementless Florida; however, we tend to forget that occasionally those storms with wicked winds of 60 mph and more can ride up through other states as has happened with me here in the mountains of Western North Carolina – no storm surge in my basement but a good place to be as trees are falling all around, and in some case landslides created by intense rains, etc… it isn’t just the coasts that are affected.

        You are so right. I guess I get stuck in my own little world sometimes. I will say this, where we are now we could have a basement, but with my luck something would spring a leak and my mobility chair would short out ! LOL ! I hate hurricanes ! They are scary no matter what you do !

        I lived in Naples for years and I think we were 8 ft above sea level and if I dug in my backyard I always hit very moist sand :) and I hate hurricanes. Thought I was leaving them behind but they seemed to follow me here.
