I grew up in Norfolk and worked on my grandmother’s tobacco farm each summer from the time I was eight years old in Kinston, North Carolina to earn enough money to buy school cloths. At the age of eight I would sit in the upper floor of the curing barn where the tobacco to help the ladies sort the tobacco into different categories; this was one of the jobs that most young children performed. It was a real treat to drink a Royal Crown Cola and eat a Moon Pie; it was part of the culture. My grandmother also cooked collard greens, turnip greens, pan fried cornbread and things like fried chicken, especially on Sunday when the vicar would be invited for lunch. I dare say that black children were not the only ones who loved water melon; I know everyone in my family loved them and one of my aunts loved water melon so much that it literally killed her; she had type one diabeties. When I have the chance to prepare southern food, I certainly do, even while working here in Maseru, Lesotho.

I do agree that Michelle Obama should live by her preaching and that “do as I say and not as I do,” is not acceptable and children are not fools either.
