College Students In Texas May Soon Have Access To Their 2nd Amendment Rights

The Texas State Senate made a bold move in passing a bill that would allow concealed handgun license holders to carry weapons into public college buildings and classrooms.

FoxNews.com reported that Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, after being unable to pass the measure as its own bill, attached it to a universities spending bill. The State Senate’s 12 Democrats had previously been stonewalling the measure, “but were powerless to stop it on Monday when all it took was a simple majority in the 31-member chamber to get it added to the spending bill as an amendment.”

According to ConcealedCampus.com, the website for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, a number of campuses in the U.S. now allow students to carry concealed weapons. The group, which is dedicated to extending 2nd Amendment rights to college students in the interest of self-defense, says, “After allowing concealed carry on campus for a combined total of 100 semesters, none of these 12 schools has seen a single resulting incident of gun violence (including threats and suicides), a single gun accident, or a single gun theft.”

Texas passed the law to license citizens over the age of 21 to carry concealed weapons in 1995. Potential licensees must past a training course before they can obtain a license.

ConcealedCampus.com says, “Nobody is suggesting that concealed handgun license holders be charged with the duty of protecting campuses.  What is being suggested is that adults with concealed handgun licenses be allowed to protect themselves on college campuses, the same way they’re currently allowed to protect themselves in most other unsecured locations.”
