The agency estimates that as many as 75 percent of property in Maine's floodplains are not covered by flood insurance.

State Farm Insurance claims that floods kill more people in the U.S. than any other natural disaster, and about 25 percent of all flooding occurs in areas with low to moderate risks.

In the event of an impending flooding, individuals should listen to radio and television broadcasts to stay informed about the latest emergency procedures. If an evacuation order is issued, people should seek higher ground, avoiding buildings that are surrounded by floodwaters.

In addition, individuals should be very cognizant of their surroundings during a flood, whether they are indoors or outdoors. They should stay away from electrical wires and downed power lines, and be wary of small, potentially dangerous animals that have left their habitat to seek shelter.
