Melting Snow Raises Prospect Of Flooding In Parts Of U.S.

The early spring months are synonymous with increased risk of flooding in many regions throughout the United States. Melting snow and heavy rainfall can contribute to these natural disasters, which can cause immense property damage and post serious health risks.
According to The Associated Press, officials in Maine have urged residents who live in floodplains to make sure they have flood insurance. The State Planning Office said that many individuals mistakenly assume that their home or business insurance policies cover flood-related damage, but then later find out they were not covered. The agency estimates that as many as 75 percent of property in Maine's floodplains are not covered by flood insurance.
State Farm Insurance claims that floods kill more people in the U.S. than any other natural disaster, and about 25 percent of all flooding occurs in areas with low to moderate risks.
Aside from acquiring proper insurance, the company has suggested several survival tips to adequately prepare for these natural disasters. In the event of an impending flooding, individuals should listen to radio and television broadcasts to stay informed about the latest emergency procedures. If an evacuation order is issued, people should seek higher ground, avoiding buildings that are surrounded by floodwaters.
In addition, individuals should be very cognizant of their surroundings during a flood, whether they are indoors or outdoors. They should stay away from electrical wires and downed power lines, and be wary of small, potentially dangerous animals that have left their habitat to seek shelter.
