Franks Get Frank: Impeach Obama Over DOMA
March 9, 2011 by Personal Liberty News Desk
President Barack Obama's refusal to support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has led one Republican lawmaker to consider an impeachment of the nation's commander-in-chief.
In an interview with ThinkProgress, Representative Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said that he would "absolutely" favor impeaching Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder if he could "gain collective support" from other lawmakers. Franks' statement was in response to the President's decision not to defend Section 3 of DOMA, which prohibits the legal recognition of same-sex marriages. The White House advised the Department of Justice to no longer defend the Constitutionality of the law.
Franks condemned the Obama administration for speaking out against the law of the land, which he believes is an impeachable offense. According to the news provider, this isn't the first time Obama has been accused of legal misconduct while in office. Last year, Representative Lamar Smith (R-Texas) hinted at impeaching the President over his immigration laws, while Representative Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) challenged Obama for not providing a birth certificate that proves his legal status.
The American Legion, the largest group of United States war veterans, recently sent a letter to Congressional leaders recommending that lawmakers enforce and defend DOMA. In the letter, Legion National Commander Jimmie L. Foster said that "we oppose all efforts to undermine, alter or otherwise corrupt the institution of marriage."
