Eat Right With Color Campaign Launched For National Nutrition Month

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) is encouraging people to consume a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables as part of its Eat Right With Color campaign since March is National Nutrition Month.
The ADA reports that Americans are becoming more interested in returning to the basics of a healthy lifestyle — including nutrition — and it wants to help by providing easy-to-use guidelines.
"Adding a splash of colorful seasonal foods to your plate makes for more than just a festive meal. A rainbow of foods creates a palette of nutrients, each with a different bundle of potential benefits for a healthful eating plan," says registered dietitian and ADA Spokesperson Karen Ansel.
The ADA's color guide for produce indicates that most colorful fruits and vegetables contain cancer-fighting antioxidants.
Natural foods that are green, orange and bright yellow have been shown to promote eye health while purple and blue produce may have anti-aging benefits. Fruits and vegetables that are red, white, tan or brown may help keep the heart healthy.
The organization also recommends adding whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy products to the colorful produce to round out a healthy diet.
