Your Household Items Could Be Releasing Poisonous Gases!

There are many plastic products on the market that can emit a strong odor… such as water containers, shower liners and curtains, mattress covers and vinyl items. And that smell that overpowers you is due to the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) releasing poisonous chemicals like mercury, dioxins and phthalates.

Because it’s waterproof and fire-retardant, PVC can also be found in clothing, raincoats, tote bags, insulation and frames for windows and doors.

PVC contains hundreds of toxic additives and these toxins can leach or evaporate out of the PVC materials posing dozens of health risks for children and adults. Toxic exposure may lead to:

  • Respiratory irritation
  • Liver and kidney damage
  • Failure of your central nervous system
  • Migraines or headaches
  • Nausea
  • Loss of coordination.

There are many action groups and organizations calling for stricter safeguards to protect the public from toxic exposure to PVC.

To reduce your chances, eliminate any suspicious items in your household or pantry immediately. Many manufacturers offer items produced from natural cotton or hemp that are safer for you and your family. Also, choose glass kitchen storage containers instead of plastic ware, or glass beverage pitchers instead of plastic bottles.

    I am a PVC formulation expert and found your artical about PVC releasing poisonious gases bazaar to say the least. PVC products produced in the USA do not contain mercury since none of the domestic producers have used this technology for many years. Dioxin is not contained in end products since the generation of such is at the production source and is very, very small. Total PVC production worldwide is only responsible for 0.4% of total dioxin generation. Over 60% of the world’s dioxin is generated by forest fires, brush fires, woodstoves and such. Watch out for your fireplace! Phthalates are a suspected toxin which means the jury is still out, even after 50 years of testing. However toy manufacturers stopped using phthalates many years ago. In my 25 year history of PVC food packaging, phthalates were never used during that period of time in food application in the markets that we serve. However PVC blood bags are still made with phthalates because the presence of the phthalate strengthens the cell wall of the blood doubling the shelf life of the blood. How many lives have been saved because of adequate blood supplies since 1940?

    The artical says that “PVC contains hundreds of toxic additives”. I would like for someone to name them. Perhaps it is looking at the vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). We have tested end products down to 5 parts per billion and have not found our first VCM molecule. In the early years of PVC production it was found that VCM was harming workers in PVC resin plants. However once this relationship was learned, it was corrected and the rest is history.

    Yes they are many groups out there that are trying to eliminate PVC because they believe articles like this one. Why wouldn’t they? But before one sets out to destroy a healthy, valuable, and responsible industry, they should learn the facts. Start with vinylinfo.org.

    Do you have any facts to back up that sensational claim, or the claim that a bad smell = toxins? And what are the “suspicious items” we’re supposed to eliminate?
