NRA CEO Says Government Gun Policies Are ‘Getting Us Killed’

NRA CEO says government gun policies are getting us killedThe head of the National Rifle Association (NRA) slammed President Barack Obama's administration and other gun control advocates during his speech at the Conservative Political Conference on Feb. 10.

Wayne LaPierre said that proposed bans on certain firearms and ammunition clips will only provide more protection for killers, adding that "government policies are getting us killed," according to CBS News. While he said that the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson, Ariz. was a terrible tragedy, he accused politicians and the media of overreacting by calling for stricter gun laws.

"Good guys carrying guns can and do make a difference," LaPierre said, quoted by the media outlet. "The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

LaPierre also played a video clip of former NRA President Charlton Heston criticizing the media for portraying the gun-rights group as a villain. LaPierre then accused the media of glorifying and making a "celebrity" out of Jared Loughner, who is the accused shooter connected to the Tucson tragedy, The Huffington Post reported.

The current NRA chief said that by plastering Loughner's photo all over television and the Internet, media outlets were turning the gunman into a hero for any deranged copy cat who seeks fame.

If they know there is a chance we can fight back, they will move on to a weaker victim.(that may be the reason YOU think they have never lost a fight)

      JimH, you right. What G.B. doesn’t realize is that everyone is human, even the bad guys. That doesn’t make them any bigger, badder or tougher than the honest folks just because they’re thugs and criminals. They bleed and die as well as those they prey upon.

      As for G.B.’s comment, “a cop is like a Jedi Knight compared to an silly “armed citizen”!”. All I have to say to that is to ask a veteran or anybody that has had any firearm training or self defense training if they’re a silly “armed citizen”?

    Remember, cops have THOUSANDS OF HOURS of frequent, grueling, intense training in how to use a gun. By the time he gets out of the academy, a cop is like a Jedi Knight compared to an silly “armed citizen”! Don’t forget, most gangbangers are super-tough, have been in dozens (if not hundreds)of brutal fights and never lost ONE of them (if they did, they’d be branded as wimps and kicked out of the gang!) What makes you think that you, as an ordinary law-abiding person, wouldn’t just get your gun taken away and stuffed up your wazoo by a typical thug???
    Criminals tend to be young and physically flawless (ever seen a fat one, or one with glasses?) They’re so quick and so strong, what chance would you have against one? Also… at the risk of coming across as racist, (WHICH I’M NOT) a lot of criminals are black. Black guys are TOUGH. Listen to gangsta rap sometime!
    Also, most thugs and gangbangers have been in, and WON shootouts against other criminals. A lot of you have never been in a real fistfight, much less a gunfight. What chance would you have?
    There was a really good 20/20 show a couple years ago titled “If I Only Had A Gun.” Watch it sometime.
    The only way we can be safe is to BAN ALL AUTOMATIC GUNS (with possible exceptions for certain, tightly regulated hunting guns) and practice/teach our kids reasoning skills, to TALK our way out of trouble.

      To even own an automatic weapons require a very special license. There ain’t no automatic “hunting guns”, they’re against the law. Automatic weapons cost thousands of dollars, far more than most of us will spend for a good, safe and secure nights rest.

    The NRA talks a good talk, but when the NRA backed Harry Reid, an anti-gunner who had manipulated the NRA by making it possible to finance a gun range in Las Vegas, the ended my membership with the NRA. My money now goes to the Gun Owners Association. Yeah, Las Vegas has their gun range, but potentially how long will it be before Harry Reid gets the guns banned?

      Doug Rodrigues, you need to get your facts straight. The NRA has never endorsed Harry Reid. For all of Reid’s faults, he is a “gun guy”.

      I wrote the NRA and gave them notice of my disappointment with their considering endoring of Harry Reid is Nevada Senatorial race.

      Here is a copy of the reply I recieved: “Thank you for contacting NRA-ILA regarding the recent reports that the NRA-Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) has endorsed U.S. Senator Harry Reid for reelection. The NRA-PVF has not endorsed Senator Harry Reid.” NRA-PVF has not contributed to Sen. Reid for reelection. In 2004, Senator Reid’s last election, the NRA-PVF did not endorse him.

      Sen. Reid has proven himself to be a supporter of our Second Amendment rights. Early last year, Sen. Reid flatly stated that he would oppose any effort to reinstate an “assault weapons” ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future. And Sen. Reid was instrumental in Senate passage (and eventual enactment into law) of the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act” (PLCAA), which shut down reckless lawsuits against gun manufacturers and dealers, that attempted to hold them liable for the misuse of firearms by criminals. Sen. Reid also cosponsored S. 659 (PLCCA) in the 108th Congress and voted against “poison pill” amendments to it, including the Feinstein Amendment to ban so-called “assault weapons”, and the Kennedy Amendment that would have banned most hunting ammunition. Sen. Reid voted for legislation that became law in 2006, to prohibit gun confiscation during states of emergency. He also voted for legislation to allow commercial airline pilots to be armed in the cockpit to protect their passengers and crew. In this congressional session, Sen. Reid voted for the Ensign Amendment to repeal the Washington D.C. gun ban and restore self-defense rights in our nation’s capital. He cosponsored similar legislation–S. 1414–in the 108th Congress. He also voted for an amendment to allow law-abiding citizens to carry firearms for self-defense in national parks and wildlife refuges. This federal policy change just took effect on February 22. In addition, Sen. Reid voted last year for the Thune-Vitter Amendment to provide national reciprocity for state Right-to-Carry permits. Sen. Reid also voted twice for the Wicker Amendment allowing Amtrak passengers to include firearms in their checked luggage. A vote on all of these amendments was made possible procedurally by Harry Reid in his capacity as Senate Majority Leader. Finally, Sen. Reid was among the 58 Senators who signed the pro-gun congressional amicus brief in the McDonald v. Chicago case, just argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on March 2, to decide whether the Second Amendment applies to states and localities.       Doug, I’m also a member of GOA and several other pro-gun organizations. Our best hope is to maintain our power in numbers. I don’t believe in taking a hard stance against the NRA over their thanks to Reid for the Las Vegas shooting facility. I don’t like Reid one bit but I will give him cedit for the support he gave the gun community in Vegas and his signature on the the pro-gun congressional amicus brief in the McDonald v. Chicago case.

        I’m glad that I made several visits to LV but won’t return because there are too many dummy voters there. Reid should have been gone.

    Where I come from, even though is constitutional, it is very hard to own a gun. Guess what? Crime, drugs and corruption are at the top of our social problems. Gun control is not the answer. I believe God is.

    When the first multiple murderer got so much attention, everyone else tried to “break the record”. When the first school shooting occurred, others tried to “break the record” so they could be “famous” too. And now there are sure to be some crazies out there who will try to beat Loughner so they can be famous too.

Thomas Jefferson (you know, the guy who wrote the Declaration of Independence) understood the true reason our Founding Fathers assured our nation’s gun rights when he said, “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”

      looks like my old Winchester 22cal pump. A very rare gun since most were used up in shooting galleries at state fairs and such.

    Well, I’m not pulling your chain. The real extremists in this situation is the pro-gun groups. Nothing pleases them and their vitriolic is way out of hand. Saying that Jared Loughner has been made a hero by the media shows how out of touch the NRA is. I have seen no such comment from any news outlet. He’s a mentally deranged killer who got no sympathy from the use of his weapon. Except from gun rights groups who said it was perfectly okay for him to buy and have that weapon on his possession. In the real world maybe the NRA should take responsibility for this young mans actions. The NRA seems to be the one playing with fire. On the Egyptian issue they could be “dead” wrong on that too. The demonstrations were justified and peaceful for the most part. They became violent when government thugs and undercover police melded into the crowd and stirred up trouble. The anti-government crowd didn’t pursue violence and never wanted it. Guns would have “killed” their cause and they would have come out the bad guys. The military would have stepped in at that point under Mubarak’s orders and the slaughter would have occurred. Guns would have solved nothing and would have given Mubarak a golden opportunity to crack down even further. He would have then arrested thousands,tortured them and and stayed in power. Weapons may serve a purpose in some cases but not that one.

        When anti-gun groups accuse NRA of opposing the law, they lie.

        The truth is, NRA supports many gun laws, including federal and state laws that prohibit the possession of firearms by certain categories of people, such as convicted violent criminals, those prohibiting sales of firearms to juveniles, and those requiring instant criminal records checks on retail firearm purchasers.

        The 1986 federal law prohibiting the manufacture and importation of “armor piercing ammunition” adopted standards NRA helped write.

        The NRA supported the Hughes-McCollum bill. That 1988 legislation prohibited the development and production of any firearm that would be undetectable by airport detectors, and enhanced airport security systems to counter terrorism.

        At the state level, NRA has worked with legislators to write laws requiring computerized “instant” criminal records checks on purchasers of firearms and those who carry firearms for protection in public. The NRA has worked with legislators and citizens’ groups in many states to increase the length of prison sentences for violent criminals, to sentence violent criminals to prison rather than probation, to prevent the parole of the most violent convicts, and to expand prison capacity.

    *** Do you know that if you live in the small town of Kennesaw, Georgia, you are required to have and maintain a firearm?

    On May 1, 1982, a new ordinance was passed by the city council of Kennesaw. This law ( Sec. 34-1 Heads of households to maintain firearms) made it mandatory for each household to own and maintain a gun, as well as ammunition. Not only was the ordinance passed by city council, it was a unanimous decision. The ordinance states the gun law is needed “In order to provide for the emergency management of the City, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the City limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.” Of course, exclusions were made to convicted felons, people with religious objections, and people with disabilities.

    Members of the city council introduced and voted for the ordinance to make a statement when a city in Illinois, Morton Grove, passed an ordinance banning hand guns from anyone other than peace officers. Morton Grove was the first community to ever ban the sale and possession of handguns.

    Both city ordinances drew worldwide media attention, with Kennesaw’s attention being negative. Nicknamed “Gun Town USA” from a column titled the same and written by Art Buchwald, expectations were for the town to covert back to the Old West style of handling disagreements with ruthless shoot outs. This expectation never happened. In fact, more than 25 years after the ban, not a single resident of Kennesaw has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender. There has been one firearm related murder but not from a resident of Kennesaw. Since the ordinance, no child has ever been injured with a firearm in Kennesaw. Crime dropped after the ordinance and the city has maintained an exceptionally low crime rate ever since, even with the population swelling from 5,000 in 1982 to approximately 30,000 today. The truth is crime has plummeted and population has soared. ***

      Some years ago (don’t remember how long ago) there was a comparison between the two cities on crime.

      Morton Grove had a number of burglaries, robberies, and a couple of murders.

      Kennesaw, during the same time period, had one ticket for running a stop sign and one speeding ticket.

When only criminals have access then the rates jump. The police cannot protect everyone and be everywhere.         The threat was neutralized. The gun is just a tool. I would have recommended 2 shots to center of mass rather than knee, foot, foot as it is a much better tactical approach (as well as much better legal approach :) ) however would not be as funny.

      G.B I was rather schocked to read your comments about how reasoning with a criminal intent on harming you is the better way versus being able to defend yourself with a gun.This tells me you have never lived in a poor neighborhood or had to use public transportation in the inner city areas. Because if you had done either one of those two with any degree of consistency we would not be reading such fantasy rhetoric as what you wrote. I have been poor most of my life and have had to live and work around people whom are extremely prejudiced and hostile towards me because of my race and sex,I have had violence attempted towards me many times and have only survived because I was armed . One instance in general happened in Seattle in the mid nineties when a gang of fifty juveniles started congregating in the downtown area and were attacking individuals riding the bus late at night who change buses downtown. They trapped me in a bus stop where I couldn’t escape but because I was armed with a knife and the ones in the front realized I was going to stab the first one who got close they chickened out and walked away even though their accomplices who had been cheering them on to attack me now started criticizing them for being afraid.Their were nine bus drivers watching the whole thing but not one of them called the police , these were the same bus drivers whom had watched this same group beat another man who was not armed half to death the night before in the very same place.

I gave some of the amazing statistics on this in my last book (and maybe the one before that). Once honest men and women have to surrender their weapons only the gangs and criminals have them and sometimes murder rates increase several hundred percent like in England and Ireland.

    LaPierre also said that while the Tuscon attacks were terrible, “it’s time for some frank talk.” Yes it is!

    The media and “political elites won’t admit the truth.” It’s “dishonest” to suggest that by passing laws we can “legislate evil out of people’s hearts” yet that is what got us here in the first place.

    “These clowns want to ban magazines,” LaPierre said. “Are you kidding me? But that’s their response to the blizzard of violence and mayhem affecting our nation. One more gun law on top of all of the laws already on the books.”

    “It’s going to make all of us less safe in this country, and you know what else it’s going to do? Make the deranged and the violence more safe,” he said. He added that even in the current environment, “as soon as you leave these halls, your life is in jeopardy.”

    LaPierre said that the situation in Egypt shows that the Second Amendment remains necessary, as illustrated by the protests in Egypt. He said that “the presence of a firearm” in the hands of good people “makes us all safer.”

    “No more lies and laws and government failure,” LaPierre told the audience of conservative activists. “At the scene of the crime, there’s only the criminal and the victim.”

    The media “turns a madman into a hero for every potential deranged copycat out there,” he said. “It’s sick, it’s wrong and the media out to be ashamed of themselves.”

    Making gun laws that only honest people abide by does not cure the problem with the criminal element and inadvertently makes criminals out of law abiding citizens.

      An armed society is a polite society.
      Castle Doctrine and No Retreat Doctrine would bring our crime
      rates to almost zero in about 6 months to a year.

      But that doesn’t allow for public “control” and profits for the Prison Industrial Complex from incarceration, does it?
      It’s not about guns at all…it’s about “control”.

        The people owning and having guns is the ONLY THING that is stopping our government from a TYRANNY worse than what aoccured in Germany!!!
        They have a reason for wanting to disarm us, you can only kill off unarmed, defenseless people!! Don’t Forget…they want to kill of 300 MILLION of us in the US alone…China is demanding it!!!
