Question For Bob
January 31, 2011 by Bob Livingston
Hi Bob,
My name is Rick Schumacher and I have been enjoying your newsletter now for about six years. I really appreciate your insights and since I trust you I need to ask for some advice. Do you have any advice for me on how to go about getting an idea/product patented? Right now I only have the idea and haven’t made the product. I want to make sure that I don’t get ripped off and maximize profits.
Thank you,
Rick Schumacher
Dear Rick Schumacher,
You should document all the information you can about your idea/product, then have it notarized in order to establish that the idea is yours and fix a date on it. This will help you in the event someone tries to steal your idea and you have to go to court. You can obtain information about the process and the necessary paperwork to patent your idea/product at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. If the process seems overwhelming to you, I suggest you obtain the services of a good patent attorney. You can find one through your local bar association.
Best wishes,
Bob
