With Gun Control, Canadian Criminals Are Making A Killing

“After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn’t do it.”–William Burroughs

When I lived in Spokane, Wash., I exercised my right as an American citizen to own a handgun. As an American living in Canada, I no longer have that right. And while there may be fewer guns in Canada, I feel less safe than I did in the U.S. That is because up here it is the criminals that have guns.

There is no constitutional right to bear arms in Canada. Instead, most of us hope that we won’t someday look down the barrel of a gun drawn by a felon.

It is a worry I hope Americans don’t ever have to live with. But you don’t have to be much of a prognosticator to expect a crackdown on guns following the Tucson tragedy. Just days after the murders which almost took the life of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), Democratic Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) was already planning to introduce legislation that would put restrictions on law abiding citizens’ freedom to obtain firearms.

No doubt McCarthy and other liberals will decry gun ownership and will stump about the need to make America safer.

But I can tell you laws don’t make people safe. Canada has some of the strictest gun control legislation in the world. Yet Canadian criminals seem to have easy access to guns.

Such was the case on New Year’s Day 2009. I was in my office in Calgary. I looked out the window and saw half a dozen police cruisers racing down Bonaventure Drive, sirens blaring. They went to a usually quiet strip mall two blocks from my office.

It was around 3:45 p.m. when a car pulled into the parking lot of the Bolsa Vietnamese Restaurant. One man remained in the car while two others entered the restaurant. There they shot dead two members of a rival drug gang.

An innocent victim, 43-year-old Keni Su’a who happened to be eating alone that day, was also shot dead.

The press named it the Calgary New Year’s Massacre and it was an escalation in an ongoing war between rival drug gangs: The “Fresh Off the Boat” (FOB) and the “Fresh Off the Boat Killers” (FK).

This and many more murders have happened even as the Canadian government has cracked down on gun registration. None of which seems to have bothered immigrant gangs like the FOB and FK who have gone from carrying knives to toting high-powered assault weapons. Such guns were in use again this past New Year’s Day when two gang members fired shots that killed one man and left another in serious condition.

This is happening in Calgary which has a population of 1 million. Things are more dangerous in larger Canadian cities like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. And it is not just the drug gangs that breed gun violence in Canada. There is no shortage of crazies who always seem able to arm themselves.

In 2006 a Canadian gunman uploaded pictures of himself posing with a rifle. He bragged on his blog that he loved the Internet game based on the Columbine shootings. One day he decided to stop playing. He went to a Montreal college and, when all was said and done, he killed one person and seriously wounded another 19 before he shot himself.

On Jan. 13 the Ottawa Citizen, concluded that Canadian gun legislation is a failure:

“As strict as Canadian gun laws appear, they do not prevent the movement of illegal firearms in or out of this country, nor their possession, and only cover those firearms that have been registered. Last year, Canadian police services reported some 8,000 victims of violent gun crime, ranging from assault to robbery and homicide — a rate of almost one person per hour victimized by violent gun crime. On average, more than 1,200 Canadians are killed and more than 1,000 injured with firearms each year.”

Canada’s stringent gun laws don’t simply take aim at handguns. In 2001, the registration portion of Bill C-68 was implemented. With that law the Federal government demanded all firearms — including rifles and shotguns — be registered. Then, in 2003, Ottawa passed a law that failure to register any and all firearms would result in criminal charges.

There are a lot of old ranchers and farmers in Alberta that couldn’t be bothered to do the paperwork on an old Winchester. In the eyes of Ottawa’s bureaucrats these people are criminals.

Canada Once Embraced Guns

I was born in Alberta and I grew up around guns. On my 12th birthday my dad bought me a single-shot .22 rifle. On my 18th birthday he bought me a 12-gauge pump action Remington shotgun. I never imagined that a time would come where I would have to level my shotgun at a person; that I would take deadly aim with it.

But that happened when I as a senior at the University of Calgary and was cramming for a final. Around midnight I heard a car screech to a stop outside my parent’s home which sat on an isolated street. I was home alone with the family dog, Elsa, a Great Dane with a gentle disposition.

In the news had been reports that two men were terrorizing women on Calgary streets. Two young women, Laurie Boyd and Debbie Stevens, had been dragged from their cars at night and murdered.

I heard pounding at the front door. I knew something was seriously wrong when I opened the door to find my girlfriend Angela standing before me crying. Before I could even ask her what was happening a second car pulled into our driveway with the high-beams on.

I took Angela inside and went outside to see what the commotion was about. I brought the family dog with me and kept her leash wrapped tightly around my hand.

Two men were walking straight towards the door; neither one saying a word and neither showing any regard for me or our dog which was growling and barking.

I dragged the dog back inside and gave her to Angela. I remembered the Remington that I kept in the front closet. I found it and then fumbled for the single target load shell that I kept in the corner of the hat shelf. It was all the ammunition I had, but I was damn happy to have it.

I was shaking, but I loaded the shell. I slipped back outside. I was surprised at how close these strangers were to me; perhaps fewer than 20 paces. I remember the taller of the two had his hand reached inside his coat.

It was dark so at first I don’t think they noticed my shotgun. But they knew it was there when I raised it to my shoulder and pumped the fore-end, chambering the shell.

In a split second they spun and ran to their car, roaring off into the darkness.

More than a year later two men, Jim Peters and Rob Brown, were charged and convicted on multiple charges of murder.

My girlfriend Angela later became my wife. To this day we don’t know if those men were the Calgary serial killers. All these years later we remain certain of two things: These men had evil intentions and we were damned lucky to have that shotgun.

Yours in good times and bad,

It’s simple, even a Canadian Marxist should get it, when you pound your weapons into plowsheers, you will plow for those who don’t. If it wasn’t for the good old boys in the USA (us gun hugging, Bible toting conservatives), a large part of the world including Canada, would be speaking German. We fought for our freedoms and we are going to fight to keep them. Try taking a look at the fate of citizens who have allowed their government to take away all their means of protecting themselves. Yours may not have endured that yet, however, i would just bet that when and if it does, someone will cry out for help from the good old boys down here in the states that you are so jealous of.

    • JC

      Corrections to your stereotype comment…
Canada was fighting in the Second WW ahead of the US.
It also supplied a higher percentage of its population to fielding an army and its track record is impeccable.
Which is not to say that US involvement didn’t save the day, it did.
But to write off our neighbors as helpless children when they gave so much and so well is typical American stereotyping that loses us any respect due to sheer ignorance of the contributions of others.

And I’ve yet to meet a genuine Canadian Marxist. The US is in fact more “socialized” and controlled than Canada is.
Socialism is a parasite anywhere you find it.

  • Don Page

Having reviewed the above article on guns ( or the lack there of) in Canada v.s. the crime rate. I also read all of the other reader’s comments.
Those of you in Canada that stick your snoot up in the air, in typical British fashion, should remember that during WWII the British were begging for, and receiving, guns sent by the American people, not the American government. If and when push ever comes to shove Canada will depend on America to bail out your boat as will the rest of the free world.
You tout the lesser Canadian crime rate and say it’s due to your stricter gun laws. If it is, in fact, true (which I doubt) I would bet the numbers are skewed do to the differance in population density. Once the numbers are adjusted it would be a differant story.
You have the stupid idea that just because you, (or someone close to you) haven’t been subjected to a violent crime that your safe from harm. Your brain can not see the truth in the fact that the criminal will always be able to secure the gun. Laws only effect the Law Abiding. The other thing the criminal alway has is the element of suprise. So if you haven’t been singled out for a serious crime you’d best thank God that the odds have been in your favor to date.
As long as we are quoting numbers: It is a proven fact that more guns in the hands of responsible citizans means less crime.
When the Wolves can not tell the Lions from the Lambs; the whole flock is safer.
Mean time; you people that beleive guns should be taken away from the law abiding should study the history of every dictator as they came to power. Six millon people lost their lives in Germany right after Adolph Hitler came to power and collected all the private guns..He was able to do this because all the guns were registered. He told the Germans it would make Germany safer. So get your head out of the sand and get the facts.
Not having a gun is your right and your choice. But if you do become a victum..Don’t Whine about it..It was your choice.

    • 45caliber

One flaw in your statements: There were six million JEWS who were killed by Hitler; there were also six million others (mostly Gyspies and blacks) who were also killed for a total of 12 million.

      • eddie47d

Your loosing your touch Caliber. There were no blacks in Germany during WWII.

      • JeffH

45caliber, eddie says there were no blacks in Germany during WWII.

        WRONG again eddie!

        From the Holocaust Encyclopedia
The fate of black people from 1933 to 1945 in Nazi Germany and in German-occupied territories ranged from isolation to persecution, sterilization, medical experimentation, incarceration, brutality, and murder.

Did you know that in the 1920s there were 24,000 blacks living in Germany? Many blacks, steadfast in their belief that they were German first, Black second, opted to remain in Germany. Some fought with the Nazis (a few even became Lutwaffe pilots!). Unfortunately, many Black Germans were arrested, charged with treason, and shipped in cattle cars to concentration camps. Often these trains were so charged with people (equipped with no bathroom facilities or food) that after the four day journey, box car doors opened to piles of the dead and dying.

Unlike Jews (in Israel and in Germany), Black Germans receive no war reparations because their German citizenship was revoked (though they were German-born). After the war, scores of Blacks who had somehow managed to survive the Nazi regime were rounded up and tried as war criminals. Talk about the final insult.

        JeffH,
eddie wrong?!?!?! what’s the world comming to????

      • JeffH

        Joe H.,lol, where to start?

      • eddie47d

That’s about the same number of Mongolians who are now living in the USA.So I guess your point would say that Mongolians are an important factor in discussing populations. 24,000 is not a large number in any country whether Germany or the USA. Heaven forbid if I could have a rational discussion with many of you. I should have Phrased my question differently since every country on earth has someone from every other country within it’s borders. So I guess it was a gotcha situation.

      • JeffH

…did eddie just admit he was wrong???

      • http://?? Joe H.

        JeffH,
I think what he said was “my mistake your fault”!!!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

I guess eddie, you could say, you lied, and you got caught and called out on it. But dont fret little one. You see, liberals get caught in their lies constantly. But they reserve the right to change their minds, and go the other way. See one John Kerry. We all know it as a flip flop. Or waffleing. Liberals are the masters of it.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Eddie your wrong again. And the count contained many Christians also.

    • Don

Right on Don Page, the Nancy’s from Canada and the US just don’t understand !!!

  • Commonsense

Instead of putting laws on the guns, put them on the people who misuse them. The only reason the death penalty doesn’t work is because it is never implemented. It’s quite simple, you infringe on an innocent persons’ constitutional rights make the punishment more severe than the crime. Theft, flog the person committing the grievance in public with a whip. Rape, casteration. Child molestation, hang them. You shoot someone without just provication, we shoot you right back! The liberals say this doesn’t curb criminals. The only reason they want to stop capital punishment is because they are prone to having thoughts of doing illegal things and they don’t want to die if they get caught, that’s all. Only the guilty flee when no one pursues. If they pass a law that says you get casterated if you forcibly rape a person, I could care less because I have no intention of raping anyone. Only someone who thinks about committing rape would worry about that law. See, and to think that the same people prone to such thoughts are now running our government, I get a cold feeling just thinking about it.

    • 45caliber

Actually, many of the liberals are afraid for their family members rather than themselves.

We have families now in the US who are on fourth generation criminals. The parents teach the children. In fact, about a year ago here in Texas, a man and his son were robbing a bank when the son was shot and killed. When questioned, the man stated that he was just trying to teach his son the “family business” and didn’t think it was right of the police to shoot him.

      • eddie47d

You have been coming up with some goofy comments Caliber but this takes the cake.”Liberals are afraid of their family members”. Who says that guy was liberal? That is a rather lame assumption. There is also a group of “hillbillies” called the travelers. They go from State to State offering to fix things. They take the folks money and leave town. Has nothing to do with being a liberal but more in line with an entrepreneur out to make money. Kind of like a banker.

      • JeffH

eddie, before you say anything else, re-read it and get it straight!

45caliber said ” for their family members” not “OF their family members”!

      • eddie47d

Are you playing Bill Clinton with me over the word “is”? Stop being so petty Jeff.

      • JeffH

…just another example of eddie the hypocrit…

      • Ray

How about having an actual point to something as opposed to giving Eddie an unwarranted hard time. Prove to us that you possess at least 1 mature bone in your body. Your comments are still so laughable!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

I know of two guys who closely resemble who you are talking about. Their names are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. They show up promoting strive in different towns, raise a bunch of money people give them for some odd reason, and then they are out of town on the first bus they can find. Oh, and eddie, by the way, those two cats are die hard liberals.

There is worthless pus guts that only understand a tight rope over a tree, no reperductions or offenders. • http://dinowips@yahoo.com trianglewhip

Anti gun + anti death penalty = more violent crime..

    • Karolyn

Baloney! The death penalty is not a deterrant. Do you really think that a killer stops to think “Gee, if I get caught, I might be killed.” The death penalty only releases that spirit from its hell on earth and, thus, is more of a reward.

      • always right

Yep, they sure do, especially as they’re being strapped to the table. The fact is, dead people commit no crimes after they’re executed. (cleaning up the streets and gene pool, one execution at a time)

      • Doc Sarvis

What do you mean by cleaning up the gene pool?

      • 45caliber

You eliminate their genes when they are executed. And those genes are part of the problem with crime.

A psychologist in Maine about thirty years ago noted that most habitable criminals had no sense of empathy. And empathy cannot be learned – it comes in your genes. So if their genes are eliminated, that prevents their children from being born with the same missing gene.

      • Doc Sarvis

        45caliber
What is the reference of that study. I have found much to the contrary on various web sites.

      • 45caliber

        Doc:

I read it in the newspaper (or Readers Digest) many (30+) years ago now. He was hired to determine what could be done to prevent criminals from committing crimes after they were released. His conclusion was that most lacked empathy which was inherited, not learned. And if they did lack it, their only concern is for their own well-being. Therefore, if you wanted to make sure they didn’t commit more crimes, you had to convince them when they were in prison that they didn’t want to go back. That meant making it so hard on them while in that they liked being out better – and were willing to not commit more crimes to prevent being sent back. Unfortunately, they don’t make it hard on them. They are only prevented from mixing with society at large.

      • 45caliber

Incidently, Doc, most psychologists disagreed with him. They were convinced that they could treat anyone and “cure” him. Once released, if that person committed another crime, he had a relapse, not because he wasn’t “cured” to begin with.

      • Doc Sarvis

Yes, well a single 30 year old study is pretty weak evidence when I easily found plenty of evidence to the contrary. I cannot easily evaluate what I found but it would suggest that a positive link to empathy via genetics is questionable.

      • Karolyn

45 – Much has been discovered in 30 years. How do you explain someone coming from a wonderful upstanding family turning to crime? That sure doesn’t sound like genes to me.

      • 45caliber

        Karolyn:

Not all criminals commit crimes due to a lack of empathy. But many do. On the other hand, many who have the lack also don’t turn to crime. They usually end up as lawyers or bankers. Crime is caused by many factors – but if we can help purge the gene pool, those who commit crimes due to that lack will have less tendency to pass along those genes. You seem to feel that everything is all or nothing.

      • eddie47d

Caliber; Maybe those bankers and lawyers lack empathy because they never get sent to jail after they commit crimes. Prison life is hard enough without making irrational excuses to make it harder on those lesser folks.

      • JC

Well it will sure stop the criminal that is caught from re-offending…won’t it ;)

      • 45caliber

        Karolyn:

I must disagree about the death penalty not being a deterent.

A friend of mine worked for the Little Rock Police Department. They had a chart on their bulletin board. Each day they would plot the total number of crimes reported the previous day.

The chart would start with a low number and each day would go up. And each day it would go up by more than the day before as well. Then a criminal would get killed. That could be by the death penalty, a cop shooting one of them, or a homeowner shooting one.

The next day the chart would again drop almost to zero to start over.

That, to me is evidence that the death penalty definately DOES affect the number of crimes committed. Each death usually only acts as a deterrent for about a week before crime starts rising rapidly again, but that is a week with very few crimes.

Until you can prove differently, I’ll trust the chart my friend was telling me about.

      • Karolyn

45 – Sounds more like a delay to me.

      • 45caliber

        A delay in what?

      • eddie47d

Caliber; I don’t think the death penalty stops anyone from committing a crime. Unless his sole purpose is to commit that crime to get a death penalty. Such as those who commit suicide by cop. Most murders are crimes of passion or accidental in the commission of another crime. The death penalty doesn’t even enter their mind so there is no deterrent.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        eddie,
It sure as hell stops any subsequent crime!!!!

      • 45caliber

        eddie:

I don’t know about your area but most murders down here are due to drugs and gangs. One cop told me that over 90% of all murders are due to that – and if he could assure that they only shot each other, he’d give them ammo. Further, most gang murders are actually hits on their own gang members. Not too long ago they sawed a man in half with a chainsaw because he was trying to keep money back from their gang leader – who was in prison at the time.

      • eddie47d

As usual Joe there is little you understand so next time try and answer what I said and please pay attention.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        eddie,
you said that the death penalty doesn’t deter any crime and I said that it sure as hell deters any subsequent crime. If that comment from me is false, then please prove it!!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

I will say this Karolyn. When they catch a guy red handed, like they did this whack job in Tucson, there should not be a dime to be pocketed by a bunch of greedy lawyers all lining up to line their pockets on the public dime like there will be. This guy should be taken out immediately, as he gave up his rights as a human being when he started firing on innocent people. Do away with him, by the same means he did away with his victims. That is fair and just, and I dont care what anyone says. It is fair as fair can be. What is unfair, is letting a bunch of lawyers and judges pocket millions of dollars over this, when there is no justice to be found here. He is an out and out murderer, and everyone knows it, and we sure as hell do not need no court of law collecting its members millions of dollars to say so. We already know he did it. He got caught red handed doing it. Shoot him now, and put it away. And yes, other guys that entertain this, would see this, and they would think twice about doing it.

  • jopa

The only place you will see articles about your guns being taken away are consevative sites or teabaggers whoever they are.The government has no desire whatsoever to take anyones guns away but their is legislation being talked about to limit magazine size. Can anyone out there show me a legitimate site where it talks about our government coming to take your guns away? I don’t think so.All this gun talk is just to rile up the whackos on a slow news day.

    • jimster

Government illegally took guns from the servivers of Katrena. Left the population defenseless with no way to defend themselves from the thugs.

      • Willie

They did the same thing in Kansas after that stromn.

      • JC

They were doing two things…running an experiment to see if they actually could take guns from Americans…and creating as much chaos as possible in order to see what the reaction would be.
It was a case of never waste a good crisis and a test run for things to come.

    • chow

So what’s the purpose of limiting magazine capacity? It’s an inanimate object and can’t kill anyone. I just don’t understand the purpose. But my guess is, it’s always a step into final confiscation they’re just doing it step at a time so the frog will not jump out of the boiling water.

    • 45caliber

      jopa:

Why does it take an article by a lib to convince you of anything?

In any case, I KNOW you have seen the numbers of people killed AFTER the government took up the weapons of their citizens. Hitler alone killed over 12 million (Jews and Gypsies). Over 100 million people were killed by their own governments after their guns were seized. We have no reason to believe that our own government wouldn’t do the same except for your word. And I’d prefer to not that the chance that you are wrong. It causes no problem if I do have one but it might if I didn’t have one.

    • JeffH

      Another “awe inspiring” liberal comment.

Its the Tea Party, you ignorant slut. There, how does it feel?

    • always right

If there are any “teabaggers” here, Jopa, I’d suspect you of being one. Had any men’s scrotums in your mouth lately? You people of the the left are disgusting creatures.

  • http://na. Robert Bradfield

Its that South African again. In South Africa the government is also on renewing licenses of legal fire arms, while we still have one of the most violent of societies. Farmers get killed with guns, by criminals (or hate crimes because of the past). Police gets killed by criminals for trying to apprehend them. Shop-owners, whether South African or foreign, gets killed because they are easy targets. Foreigners come to South Africa to have their spouses killed by South African criminals (not proven in court yet). All this is happening while not one of these crimes are committed by people who owns a firearm legally.

The irony of it all is that when a young man defended his aged grand mother from an attack by killing the perpetrators a murder docket was opened against him (his grand mother died subsequently from injuries sustained during the attack). What can one say – carrying a firearm is dangerous, but not carrying one is more dangerous.

    • JC

Robert I have a friend here who is from SA. He is ex SA military and a great guy. It took him and his wife 8 years to sneak enough money out of the country so that he could relocate his family.
Said he was tired of the crime and the general domestic situation that caused him to put on two guns everyday as though they were his socks. Just a natural thing to do.

He tells me that if you are a white woman in SA it is not a question of “if” you’ve been raped, but when. He tells me a great deal more than that and I have to wonder if Mandela is proud of what he has created. No wonder SA is having so many problems…take care.

  • Gun Nut

Ok all you antigun nut jobs. I’ll make a deal with you. I’ll give up all my guns when you collect all the guns from all the criminals out there. Then you have to put up a sign on your house that reads, ” This is a GUN free zone” Then we will find out just how SAFE you are.

    • JC

Not just from the criminals…but the government too…ALL governments. In fact I’ll give up my guns when they can prove that NO One has one. ;)

      • 45caliber

I won’t. They forge their “proof”.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Thats right. It is like a picture I saw once, where the guy put a sign in front of his house that said something like “I believe in the right to have guns, but my neighbor doesnt”, with an arrow pointing towards his neighbors house. He did this because his neighbor gave him grief for owning a gun. So when the criminals robs his neighbor, Im thinking that guy wishes he had a gun.

  • Pohknee

I think gun related deaths or deaths by violent weapons is not related to gun control laws at all. I would like to see some statistics on the correlation between the violent death rate (by any weapon including guns) to the cities of North America by poverty level. I believe you will not only find a resemblance but a “direct correlation” of these items. When people are desperate, they resort to desperate deeds and would kill you with a rolled up newspaper or anything they can get their hands on. If all guns were removed from the face of the earth, “murder” and ‘violent deaths” would not decrease but simply change methodology. People would switch to knives etc. If we want to decrease the danger, we should be attacking mental health problems, social problems, and doing our utmost to decrease poverty. The numbers and statistics will follow and our safety will be improved in real terms.

    • http://dinowips@yahoo.com trianglewhip

@Poknee. I agree with your statement. But gun control is total folly.. Places like UK and Canada, has more violent crime per cap than US. When you have Anti gun and anti death penalty, that’s what you get.

      • Grinch58

        How true.

What liberals and other “enlightened” ones fail to realize is that in America, the fact you could break into a home where someone can pull out a weapon, tends to dissuade criminals.

Isn’t this just common sense? Of course crimes will be up in police states that enforce gun control laws-where is the fear or risk of death and injury gonna come from?

My family has defended criminals for many decades. Do people understand how these scumbags think? They prey on the weak. Meaning if they have no fear they could get shot by a homeowner, you bet your ass violent crimes and especially burglaries would increase 10 fold.

Hello……common sense where are you? Please make a reappearance in this Country.

      • 45caliber

A “hot burglary” is one where the criminal breaks into a house KNOWING the owner is at home. In the US, less than 10% of all burglaries are “hot”.

But in England, where guns are illegal, 90% of all burglaries are “hot”. The reason? They know the homeowners have no guns for protection and they want to force the homeowner to tell where they might have money or other valuables hidden.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You are right. I actually watched a show a couple of years ago, and I dont know if the reporter was in New Orleans or Watts or where, but it was a gangland ghetto area, and he was talking with all these little punk gang bangers about gun control and gun laws. Not one, not two, not three, but all of them, said they hoped upon hope that the states and federal government would ban people owning all guns. The report looked puzzled and asked why, stating how it seemed ironic that a bunch of gang members would say that. The gangsters then told him the truth, how it would be easy pickings for them then. They stated how they could walk into any house and take whatever they wanted, and rob any business, because they all had guns and these gun laws wouldnt apply to them, because all their guns are illegal anyways. And that is exactly what would happen. It would be open season on the law abiding citizen by all the little gangster punks and every common criminal around. And that is a fact, and anyone, and I do mean anyone, who doesnt understand that, is just plain stupid, and dangerous also. Stupid and dangerous. Sounds like a liberal to me.

Oooh let’s be scared of everything. Let’s continue living with a 19th century mentality. Let’s keep focusing on guns and our right to arm ourselves to the teeth and then we can act surprised when Columbine or Virginia tech or Tuscon happens.

Let’s keep pretending that because we have guns we can protect ourselves from government. I got news for you, unless you have a nuclear weapon, you don’t stand a chance against the American Empire Military Industrial complex. And if you think our National guard or army won’t turn against us, you may have forgotten the mercenary armies like Xe. They will do it for money.

An enlightened society would give up their guns as they would realize their futility.

Get ready for more blood shed and grief.

    • Searcher

      Eric,
I’m scared of very little, other than the direction this country is taking. I own and carry a firearm. Apparently that scares you and your ilk. I carry as a means to take responsibiblty for the safety of myself and my family. I don’t place that responsibility on others. As an enlightened individual, I know that the police can’t be everywhere to protect me. All they can do is attempt to capture the perpetrator of the crime. I know that there are people out there intent on doing evil, and I accept that. It has always been that way, and always will be. I choose to be a less of an easy victim. That is my right as a human being. If you choose to be an easy victim, that is your right. Just don’t try to deny me of my right.

Typical Liberal mentality. Tell you what Eric-why don’t you and all the enlightened ones go live in some police state where they do all the thinking for you and you can rely on them to protect you.

I mean the level of stupidity and common sense in this Country right now is utterly staggering. This is clearly the product of a couple of prosperous decades where idiots like you were spoon fed and dealt with virtually no adversity, I am guessing. Perhaps your ultra soft ass lives in a basement somewhere? Yeah Eric, its a great idea to disarm the American public and do away with the 2nd Amendment.

Again, gun laws create victims, they don’t prevent crimes. Look at the numbers elsewhere.

I guess enacting gun control laws will completely change human nature. Yup, humans that seek to do harm wouldn’t find guns somehow, or find a new weapon to use. The logic used by the “enlightened” ones is certainly comical.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Maybe if some street punk, “busted a cap off in his monkey a$$”, like they say, Eric might have a different thought pattern concerning a hand gun. Until one day someone had enough of his mouth and knocked him on his ass, he then curled up in a ball crying and begging not to be hit anymore. I stood there in shock feeling major pity for this guy. Well I witnessed the same with that guy many more times during those years. Point being bullies, thugs, jerks, and most importantly corrupt governments do not and will not respect weakness and will prey on the weak every chance they can.

Apparently you have no trust on people especially those in our military. You also believe that our government will use nuke against the people in an uprising. Have you noticed our government doesn’t nuke our enemies even the one’s that attacked the world trade center? But you think they will use it on us? I’d like them to do just that I’ll move the uprising to DC so they can nuke DC

      • 45caliber

The liberals are certain that the military is filled with prospective murderers – but they are also certain that they will follow the President’s order if he tells them to disarm and shoot any civilians (perhaps because they are certain that they are prospective murderers). So they aren’t worried about any attempt to get rid of some bad politicians. After all, the military will stop us.

I’m more worried about any organized action being hit by a nuke. After all, who has their finger on the button? And they would have no qualms about any innocent people being in the target area.

      • 45caliber

For some reason I’ve never understood, liberals dislike killing and won’t do it unless there is no other choice. BUT … they are certainly willing to tell someone else to go do it. They are willing that someone be killed as long as they don’t have to do it themselves. Then they claim innocence if someone points out that they are willing to kill or are killers.

Earth to Eric, Earth to Eric. Listen you ill informed soul. Had a teacher at Columbine, or a student at Virginia Tech, or one of Gabby’s staff been carrying a gun, all these whack jobs that did these shootings, would have been cut down before they did all this damage. But at Columbine, no one was allowed to have a gun, only the shooter. At Virginia Tech, no guns were allowed there, except for a criminal who doesnt care about the law. And in Arizona, it appears no one in that parking lot was carrying a gun, as maybe it is illegal in Arizona, I dont know. But if one of her staff was packing, he could have took this guy out and many would have been saved. The criminal will always have guns Eric, as in these instances no one was suppose to have a gun there, but the criminal did. Do you understand this? If not, I, or no one else can help you, because your beyond repair if this doesnt register to you.

  • Mr. Byard Grim

Dear PLD, Same old argument against the 2nd Amendment to restrict the rights of the people. The Liberals are not about protecting anyone except their agenda and as long as law-abiding Americans have guns then they feel threatened. As in the colonial days, enforcement of the law is needed, but the police cannot be everywhere at once so if we the people cannot protect ourselves in our own homes, on our property, or on the street then we won’t be protected. If the President and his corrupt politicians are so stupid to want to take away our right to bear arms (like his home town of Chicago where the crime rate increased drmatically with gun restriction) then he needs to take the guns away from his Secret Service and see how well they can protect him from the same criminals that prey on us as well. Enforcing the 2nd Amendment protects everyone…restricting it protects no one.

    • 45caliber

The SCOTUS has already ruled that the police have no mandate to defend you/protect you. Therefore you can’t sue them for their failure.

  • Lloyd

Why do people have an issue with the basic premise of self-defense? I have the right as a HUMAN being on planet Earth to be safe and to defend myself with ANY MEANS.I don’t need GOVT permission, regulation, and legislation to allow me the right of personal protection. That idea should have NEVER came in question. There is NO common sense at all with that idea!!! The Left, no matter what country they are from, think that being in a “collective utopia”, with the Elites “guiding” us ,since WE don’t have the mental capacity to do so,magically solves all problems.Take this or that away then “no bad things happen, because people have one less way to do bad things”. Due to Liberals, the “poor criminals” have more rights than the law abiding honest citizens! And now that citizens have had enough of absolute nonsensical actions, the Left name calls, ridicules, and demeans people, groups and country’s, when their ideas are rejected. DON’T TREAD ON ME and we will have no problems, We have many laws on the books enforce them vigorously! DO and THINK more for yourself ,GOVT control is NOT the answer!

    • 45caliber

Many countries won’t allow self defense to be used as an argument if you shoot someone. You are supposed to stand there like a good little boy or girl and be shot rather than risk harm to the criminal. There are several in Washington who have stated that they would like to pass a law forbidding shooting in “self-defense”. So far they haven’t. I think if they tried, they are afraid someone might want to shoot them in self-defense.

  • Cliffystones

Wow, a lot more comments since my “last three” remark. Of course I was referring to those fools who still think that restricting the gun ownership of law abiding folks will deter crime.

  • Hal Swaim

The 2nd Amendment IS AMERICAN RIGHT! When seconds count, the police are just minutes away! We need to enforce the gun laws already on the books! We don’t need more laws, criminals don’t care about laws, and the crazy people don’t either! If a person doesn’t want to defend themselves, that’s O.K. with me, but I have a Concealed Carry permit, and I am prepared to defend myself and my family if I ever have to. Criminals be warned!

    • Crashaxe

What part of “Shall not be infringed” don’t we understand?
To make any law regarding guns weather it be ownership, make/model, or registering is all infringement of the 2nd amendment.
Sad part is the fact that the Constitution of the United States has been trampled upon for over 100 years and no one seems to notice.
Sheeple were all going to get what we deserve for falling asleep and being brainwashed by the controlled media.

  • Cliffystones

The last three comments are exactly why I wish there were someplace that I could “Go Galt”.

Besides the liquor store robbers and the wackos, there is a whole class of people in this world that would like to control the lives of the rest of us. There are whole regimes including the current crop in the White House that would like to micro-manage honest citizen to death.

This is why we United States Citizens have a right, in fact an obligation, to arm ourselves well and train ourselves in the proper, safe use of firearms. And if I want to own an AR-15 with a 50 round clip, or a 50 caliber rifle, that’s my damn business. And as long as I utilize that firearm in a responsible manner no one has the right to criminalize me for possessing it!

    • 45caliber

Over 50,000 here in Calgary alone.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        JC,
a lot of those transplanteds are the cowards that ran from the Viet Nam war! the Canadian government told the US a few years ago that they shouldn’t come to Canada if they wanted to run from the war this time as they would send them back. some came back from there when Carter was in and he gave them a slap on the wrist! My opinion is that they made their bed so let them sleep in it! They are no better than the ones that died over there so why should they get special treatment?? I’ll never forgive any of them!

      • JC

That would put them all in their 60′s at least..yet all the ones I’m meeting are here and in business and no where near 60. Don’t forget that Canada is a major producer of oil and has a manufacturing base proportionate to its population. I’d say a very few of them are or ever were draft dodgers. They’re business people, or like myself married to Canadians.

    • Jack Reed

I have read the Myers’ letter for many years. He writes about and follows the energy markets with emphasis on oil sands for his subscribers. All the headquarters are in Calgary. He does what a good reporter is suppose to do, the follows the story. Finally if he was born in Canada and became an American, Ottawa considers him a duel citizen. That gives him as much right to criticize Canada as anybody; or have the Marxist that run the federal goverment put a ban on that too. They don’t allow guns in Egypt either and look at where that country is going this very moment in time.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

So now we keep our money here, and Im betting thousands are stopping their trips up there also. And soon, you all will be under muslim control anyhow, because being the pacifist appeasers you are, the Islamic wave will slap you around and you will wave the white flag and give up without a fight, and expect us to come clean up the crap in your shorts, again. Shame on you.

What if he had to shoot and missed, would of been nice to have another 30 rds. During stress it is hard to hit a target. Ask any police officer.

    • 45caliber

      Too True!!

West Point teaches it’s grads that only one of ten people can shoot accurately in firefights.

One local cop shoots in the 97% on a range. He was in a bank when a robber can in. He shot 13 times – and his only hit was in the leg of a secretary in an office through a wall. The robber didn’t do any better and gave up after his gun jammed. They were about 20 feet apart.

      • http://none Russ

45 cal. you said something about gun control—-it is not about guns————————-it is about–CONTROL???

      • 45caliber

        Russ:

If you are refering to what I said here, most people panic or get excited when under fire. They hide behind trees, etc. and blindly point and fire their weapons. West Point teachs their pupils that this is so. They NEVER aim. I’ve seen one man (in Vietnam) empty his rifle straight up – because that happened to be the way it was pointed when he saw the enemy – rather than aim at the enemy he saw. And he called us liars when we told him that later. It’s commonly called “deer fever”. When I asked my lieutenant why they didn’t pick out the ten percent who were good and leave the rest at home, he told me it was because they were used as “targets” to distract the enemy from shooting only at the good soldiers.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        45caliber,
another thing that happens is “frozen trigger finger” syndrome! I remember a time one of my company ships were coming into a “hot” LZ and the gunner froze! The crewchief reached around with a spare M60 barrel and whacked him upside the head on the helmet! The guy acted like he just woke up and didn’t stop firing till the pilot yelled at him!!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Gun control means using two hands.

      • John Myers

        Dear 45caliber,

You are 100 percent correct. In fact I recently read two books which confirm what you say: Anthony Beevor’s D-Day: The Battle for Normandy and another very interesting book, Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson. Both talk about studies that point to “first misses”.

I can say that in my case three things were involved.
        1. I only had one shell (and was happy to have it).
        2. I had a shotgun
        3. The bad guy that I took aim at was less than 10 yards away so something was going to “catch” him.

I had a buddy who was on an RCMP SWAT team. Once I asked him his weapon of choice in case of a home invasion. “Easy,” he said, “a 12-gauge. Can’t miss!”

Thanks for reading and for your input,

        John Myers

You sheeple that think gun control/more laws will keep criminals from having guns are fools. They will get them and the older man that cant swing a bat or move as quickly when they break into his home will die. Oh yeah, that’s right….just call the cops while you hide in a closet….sure…they will get there in time. Fools!

    • 45caliber

England banned their guns some years ago. Most were turned in and destroyed. A recent cop report there stated that there were as many guns in England today as there was before they banned them. The big difference is that the present guns are fully automatic AK-47′s or equal and are in the hands of the gangs rather than the law abiding citizens. They are smuggled in, primarily from Russia.

      • independant thinker

“The big difference is that the present guns are fully automatic AK-47′s or equal”

And even if nothing but 5 and 6 shot revolvers were smuggled in the law abiding private citizen would be at a grave disadvantage.

      • eddie47d

You prove the point of the “other side” Caliber. “Russia supplies guns to England”. So it’s not the ban that increases crime but the gun runners. The same could be said about Mexico in which we supply the bulk of the guns used in crime. There again it’s the gun runners who are upping the ante. The more weapons we supply to Mexico the more deaths. Maybe both Russia and the USA are nations without a conscience. This would be a good time to point out that argument about Switzerland. Sure alot of folks (men) have weapons but they also have strict laws governing those weapons. The USA has weak laws that encourage criminality/easy access. Switzerland isn’t known for it’s gun running scams. ( maybe financial but that is another issue).

      • http://?? Joe H.

    • Gurd

The sound of a gun “racking” pistol or shot gun is recognizable to any criminal. Revolvers are silent until fired so you will hit the thug squarely in the front. Otherwise, the thugs self preservation instinct likely kicks in.

      • 45caliber

The hammer on revolvers tends to click when you cock it. And you should always have the hammer cocked (forget the double action) if you can. You can hold it on target better that way.

      • ValDM

I’ve used the sound of “racking” my shotgun to make a drug dealer move on and conduct business somewhere besides in front of my house. I must say the sound alone is a deterrent.

I am a registered weapon owner, however, there needs to be stricter gun controls here in the US. AMERICANS ARE SO HYPOCRITICAL. WE HAVE THE LEANEST GUN LAWS WITH THE WORST CRIME RATES OF ANY CIVILIZED NATION! I’m sorry, but past and current history proves that our freedoms allow for easy obtaining of firearms and NRA lobbyists pay big bucks for our legislators to have lax gun laws. I mean when will we realize that every single person can’t govern themselves? Now we even have an argument that 30 round clips should be left alone…that’s like handing kids cigarettes and not expecting them to smoke!?! Doesn’t make sense at all! If anything this article proves that gun ownership should be a right, however, assault weapons, 30 round clips, an arms of warfare-the public shouldn’t have access. This guy had 1 shell and was able to deter that potential threat.

If the goverment comes for the weapons, I assure you Ivan, they will have a much bigger fight on their hands than they ever imagined. I am totally convinced of that, and were I a betting man, I would bet the farm in Vegas on this one. No doubt about it.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

And besides that Ivan, they dont even have the man power to go and act on arrest warrants they have out for criminals, by the tens of thousands. They dont have the man power to go after 4 million illegal aliens, or however many it is. How are they going to go door to door and take guns, from armed people, without alerting everyone about it? You under estimate the reserve of the free American, to assemble themselves together for the good of all. That is what we did to found this country, and if our government tries to do this, I have full confidence we will come together as a nation of “we the people”, and run these tyrants down and out. I would bet on that one also.

      • eddie47d

Conservative at Birth; You can believe what you want but even after the Kennedy assassination Americans went out in droves to buy guns. Not much has changed and that was over 50 years ago. Americans are more fearful than most countries because of these assassinations and killings. Don’t be blaming Obama for your paranoia for it has been around for a long time. It’s just more excuses to hate the man so next time you stub your toe …blame it on Obama. Why not!The more killings …the more guns ….the more killings…the more guns. There’s that circular firing squad again. Let the change begin with you.

      • DaveH

        Eddie,
I sure get sick of reading your fabricated facts. Try posting some references if you can. You might just learn something if you make that effort.
I have posted plenty of links to refute your contention that more guns equals more crimes. Read them. You can read, can’t you?

DaveH, can’t you can see, the liberal name calling is all the proof eddie needs. Another fine example of hypocrite eddie.

      • JC

Same old baseless crap from eddie.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Its not so much Obama eddie, he is the figurehead, that represents the liberal way of life. That is what is so dangerous here. Gun control would not have stopped this shooting, the Ft. Hood shoot, Texas El Paso or Columbine. No gun control laws are going to stop the common thief from robbing the local gas station. Criminals will always, and I repeat eddie, always have guns, no matter what laws are in place. If you would look, you would see that 90 percent plus criminals caught with weapons have illegal or stolen weapons, not registered to them. No gun control laws would change this, it would just escalate it, and that is a fact. Liberalism that only wants the government to have guns, and not its population, not only puts us at risk to outside invasion, it puts us at risk of being violated by our own government, like the people of North Korea for instance. Just like that eddie. And I will guarantee you, if they come for the guns, there will be a lot, and I do mean a whole lot of government agents shot down, as the American people will unite and revolt against this, and I will guarantee you this eddie, the amount of people armed that would band together to fight this illegal act of taking our weapons, will dwarf the bands of people the government sends out. And the military will not be on their side either. Count on that.

Interesting this rant of yours You sound more like a gun grabber than a gun owner.
You all seem to forget the Washington “Elite” want ALL guns.

      • Crashaxe

      • JC

More like the “Global” elite…the UN One Worlders want us all unarmed.

    • Mark

Your statement that says we have the leanest gun laws is way off the mark of reality. Gun laws vary greatly depending on where you live. In fact some states and cities(like D.C., Chicago for instance) have some of the strictest laws anywhere. Which only proves the fact that gun laws DO NOT deter crime.

      • 45caliber

I don’t know where it stands now (and am not interested in looking) but not too long ago NYC and DC had the highest murder rates in the country even though ownership of guns was illegal in both cities.

      • Karolyn

Take a look at Charlotte, NC. The crime rate there is higher than NYC. NYC is like a playground compared to Charlotte.

      • always right

crime is tied to demographics. Look at the racial breakdown of high crime cities/areas and you notice one constant.

      • independant thinker

Look at Kennesaw GA. where basicly everyone is required to own a firearm if legaly able to do so. They have the lowest crime rate for a city their size in the US last I heard.

      • 45caliber

        independent:

And there is a town in Illinois that banned all guns. Their crime rate is the highest in the country for towns their size.

    • 45caliber

      Akillion:

You should check the number of gun laws before you start talking of a need for MORE gun laws.

There are over 2000 federal gun laws. The problem is that most of them are not enforced. If they aren’t enforced, why do we need more of them?

Virginia, some years ago, started enforcing some of those federal gun laws. Other states, including Texas, has started the same. The biggest detractors of enforcing these gun laws are the anti-gun people in Washington. One law that is working when enforced is a law that requires an additional 10 year sentence on top of any normal sentence for any crime that includes a gun. The criminal may be given 15 years for robbery but an additional 10 for using a gun to do it. That means he spends 25 years in jail.

Now tell me, why would those who are against guns and want more gun laws be against enforcing the ones they do have?

      • http://?? Joe H.

        45caliber,
Ohio has had a manditory seven year penalty for using a gun in commiting a crime. It doesn’t even have to be a real gun as long as the victim THINKS it’s real. I can count on one hand the times I’ve read that it has ever been enforced. I know of a man(?) that raped a mentally handicapped girl with a pellet gun and of course she thought it was a real gun. What did he get? SIX MONTHS!!! SIX LOUSY MONTHS!! Too bad at times that they did away with public hangings! Yet they think law abiding citizens are a threat? these progressive a$$holes are CRAZY!!!

    • joe howard

The Swiss government issues automatic machine guns and other firearms to every houshold/able-bodied person. They are all trained in the save use and storage. They have one of the lowest crime and accident rates with firearms of anywhere in the world. If safety and injury are your concern, Doctors Kill more people accidently in the US than firearms. Should we outlaw Doctors? Auto accidents kill an mame 10′s of thousands times more than firearms. Outlaw autos, they are not protected by the constitution. Laws do not change morality. No God, no moral rules. Firearm laws exist and are violated now. Murder is against the law also. Does it stop because of a law?? NO.

      • Dan-o

Keep throwing those words of common sense, liberals hate that.

      • independant thinker

Joe……….The Swiss do not issue a firearm to each household. They have mandatory military service for their citizens who when discharged from the army keep their duty weapon many of which are true assualt rifles (machine guns). The effect is to have essentialy all households armed but it is not done by issuing the firearms directly to the households.

      • 45caliber

All males in Switzerland are a part of their military from the time they are 18 until they are 50. They serve long enough to be trained and then take their military equipment home – which includes rifles and ammo. They are required to visit a rifle range for practice at least once every three months. Once they are discharged at age 50 they may keep their weapon if they wish. Most do. Because of the manditory requirement to practice, every village has at least one gun range. And they have more competitive shooting there than any other country of the world, particularly when shooting matches counts as practice. Further, the ammo is free at the ranges. Women are encouraged to do the same but aren’t required as men are.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Since you brought up doctors that accidently kill people, what about the doctors that intentionally murder babies in their mothers wombs? Im sure that accounts for as many murders as hand guns. Yet liberals are all right with that, but not with hand guns. Imagine that. What a sick state of mind.

    • using reason to attain knowledge

Who decides what is reasonable? You have loons making the laws just like you have loons breaking them. How do you expect to have sanity in legislation, when the political discourse of the day is driven by current events? The short answer is that you cannot. lets punish all the law abiding citizens so a few lunatics wont be able to hurt us…Problem is that the lunatics will find a way,any way that they can. So now you have disarmed the law abiding citizen and made him impotent to protect a few who are in the wrong place at the wrong time.Which could happen anywhere at any time regardless of the rule of law. It just doesnt make any sense to punish us all for the actions of the few.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

A lot of the reason our crime rates suck right now, is simply, lawyers. Lawyers and judges have prostituted our legal system, to where we have repeat offenders again and again and again, and nothing gets done to them but slapping their hands. That is how our legal system works. If the dude doesnt have a job, which 95 percent of the criminals dont. If the dude doesnt own a house, which 95 percent of the criminals dont, and the dude doesnt own any car or property, which 95 percent of the criminals dont, then the legal system has nothing to get from them. And if there is no money to be collected from these guys, these dirty lawyers and judges could care less about justice. Its all about the almight dollar for them, and that is a fact. Ive seen it a thousand times. Dirty rotten scoundrels walk because the system cannot get anything from them. Instead of locking their lousy butts up, they release them, and give them a court date 2 months from now. The dude of course doesnt show up for court, so they issue a warrant. But then we have a problem. They have thousands of warrants out there, and no man power to go exercise them. So unless they get lucky and pull the guy over for a traffic violation, or catch them doing another crime, they stay free. And then, this really frosts the cake, when they do catch them again, they note that they have a warrant, set a court date, and release them to appear in court in 2 months, and the dude is free again. It is simply nuts. But Im telling you, this is what they do. Its insanity.

  • http://printing-for-profit.com Gary Larivee

If an “expert” searches hard enough one anecdote to prove a theory can always be found. Any US city with over a million population has more gun crimes in a year than all of Canada.

If you need to carry a hand gun to prove your man hood to yourself perhaps you should move back to the USA.

    • BobS

That is because most of the big cities are in states that have gun control. Look at the crime rate in the big cities that are in states where you have a right to carry, it is much lower. I don’t carry because I have to “prove my manhood”. I carry to protect myself and my family and people like you that are afraid to carry to protect themselves.

      • Crashaxe

        AMEN!

      • Karolyn

I believe that people who carry guns are expecting trouble, whether consciously or not and will eventually get it. And I am not anti-gun. Where I live, just about everybody has at least one gun. It’s a very rural area, and there is little crime.

      • D. Melton

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

I have to disagree Karolyn. Many I know who carry guns, do so after the fact of having been accosted before, and have vowed to never have it happen again, and have armed themselves. And these are good, hard working Christian people, who do not want to feel that helpless feeling again. While yes, there are some hoods who carry guns because they go to places they probably shouldnt be going to , and doing things they probably shouldnt be doing, but there are millions of law abiding citizens, who have no plans to ever acost anyone with their gun, or even show it that they are carrying one, all to have the peace of mind that it is there incase it is really needed. Thats what is all about.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Gun homicide in the United States, believe it or not, is led by Louisiana in rate per 100,000 people, at 12.74 percent, with 574 being the number of homicides. But California, at 6.67 percent, leads in homicides with 2392, followed by Texas with 1364, then New York with 889, Florida 883. In California, a carrying permit is deemed worthy for one to have by the local sheriff. In Texas, you dont even need a permit to carry a loaded hand gun when walking from a place to your vehicle. Its called a peaceable journey law. That is why Texas has a lot of homicides, for two reasons. One is illegals causing crime on the border, and two is, the citizens are armed and stop criminals in their tracks. New York and California, its pretty much the criminals doing their thing.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Oh, and by the way, for all you people who say Sarah Palin incites violence with with shooting guns and hunting and such. Her Alaska, listed 37 homicides on this same list. Lets see, liberal California, under Pelosi with 2392, and Palin with 37. Hmmm. Now who is really dangerous?

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Me too. I even carry a life vest in the boat when I go fishing. I hope I never have to use it also. I also wear a coat in the winter when it is cold out, and carry an extra one in the car and a blanket, just in case. Again, I hope I never have to use them, but Im prepared. When I go camping, I carry a giant tarp to put over my tent and picnic table and half the campsite, just in case of rain, so that I can still be outside if it pours. I hope when I camp the rain stays away, but in the event it happens, again, Im prepared. I have found in all instances of life, from the things I mentioned above, to playing sports or taking a test in school, the ill prepared will suffer, but those who are prepared will fare much, much better and succeed. The same is true in this hand gun matter.

    • ValDM

I’m not a man. I am, however, a disabled old woman who is alone a lot. I have guns, and am glad to have them. If someone wants to perpetrate a crime on me, they will get a dose of whatever I choose to shoot them with. Manhood doen’t have anything to do with it. On the other hand, even in my younger days, I wouldn’t consider anyone who wasn’t familiar with guns and kept a few to be anything but a man, unlike the limp-wristed specimens that decry the ownership of guns.

    • JC

Gary, you think it’s about proving manhood? Now there;s an effiminate observation. ;)

It’s about sovereignty and the protection thereof.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

That proving manhood thing, is exactly what these little punk gang bangers do. They think having a gun makes them a man, and gives them the right to go out and pull their reign of terror on people, when deep down, they are crybaby little punks. And if they institute gun control, these little punks are the only ones that are going to have guns, because face it folks, most of them have them illegally anyhow. Almost all of them are unregistered, stolen, and the criminal will gladly take them and use them that way. Take them away from the law abiding citizen, and we will have a big, big problem. These gangs will go nuts, as will the muslim terrorists and every other criminal or terrorist.

    • http://deleted Claire

Manhood/womanhood has nothing to do with it as far as I am concerned. I have a gun and I know how to use it. I have never felt that I had to prove anything to anyone.

      • JC

        Exactly Claire :)

  • Jack Gordon

OK, enough isolated anecdotes. Take a look at the overall stats and you will quickly discover that gun crime in Canada is a VERY small part of the total picture. I’ve lived for years in Quebec and in New England, and I can tell you that guns are a BIG problem south of the 45th parallel but hardly cross the mind of Quebec citizens. The only people who seem to see it otherwise are American right-wing dingbats, the gun zealots at the NRA, and those who fall for their deceitful propaganda. Face it: The US is no longer a cowboy nation and it no longer needs the cowboy thinking illustrated by this ridiculously tendentious article.

    • rob mull

Which would a criminal prefer to assault or rape, Jack; a gun zone or a “no” gun zone? And why is it that all the law makers who want to ban guns, either have their own, or a cadre of body guards that are “packing?” And, by the bye, Jack, they’re not called “Cowboys” anymore,[Cowboys are the "good" guys or a football team] they’re called “thugs” and “gangstas’”. Any questions, Jack, or are you beyond all that “unwashed masses” tripe???

No one is disarming Canadians (yet). The difference is that we’re not allowed to walk around in public with loaded guns.
The government here has registered some 7 million firearms in a nation of 33 million. By their own account they believe that over 60% of the guns in Canada are not registered as people refuse to do so.

The gun only hurts or kills someone when the trigger is pulled. We have lots of gangs, lots of metal health issues, yet we want to remove guns and not work on the problem. Talk about gangs, thiefs, murderers and you will find many are illegal people that crossed the border, durg cartels, mafia and so on. We have on the internet how to make bombs, and how to steal from others amoung many good things. The reason many die by guns is we are a free nation with choices. You will find that with freedom comes risk. Do away with our freedom and there will be less murders, but then more people in jail.

      • taxpayer

By the way how do you think the chinese, north koren or Russians protect them self? Think maybe a government hit squad can make a judgement that you must die and therefor it is ok to kill you without anyone knowing except your niegbor that falls in line or have the same done to them. How many people in the world die from their government making the call? Of course there is no way of knowing as governments would not track that kind of thing. So it is possible for many in many countries to be killed yet not recorded, except for countries that have guns to protect themself.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

The Russian way of life changed when their socialism collapsed, where you know, the people werent allowed to have guns. And North Korea keeps its people under control, because they have guns and the people arent allowed to. And some of you want to instill that here. Amazing. And the Chinese are the same way. Terrible record of human rights. They take opposition leaders and kill them or jail them, and control their people by having guns and the people dont. This is the sad type of life we will have here, if we enter into the era of making it illegal to have guns. I guarantee it. Look at these countries, and how they are. The people are not allowed to be armed. This is our future if we follow suit people. Pay attention please, its not that difficult.

Are you suggesting that you know how 33 million people feel about the US?

I can drive around the countryside here in Southern Alberta and see the Stars and Stripes hoisted right next to the Maple Leaf at the head of a very many driveways.
And there are thousands of Canadian troops in Afghanistan right now serving right alongside of American troops.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You may be right, I stand corrected. I just dont see many Canadians speaking favorably of the U.S. Like many countries, it seems then benefit mightily from us, then tear us down. I guess the liberals there, much like here, seem to get their voices heard more, whereas the conservative is silenced by the media, like here in the states.

Wow, three front page gun/ammo articles. Your paranoia is getting even more obvious.

It is my sincerest hope that you have the same experience I had of taking fire from a group of punks with guns while I was unarmed. You will find a new meaning and appreciation for God, life, and the true freedom of being able to defend yourself.

      • Doc Sarvis

Too bad those punks had guns.

      • Les

And how do you plan to stop them from getting guns?

      • Greg

Agreed, but do you think that even if they didn’t have guns they wouldd’ve been at Church service instead of looking for trouble? Or is it more likely they would’ve had some other type of weapon? Were I armed they would be dead and society would’ve improved.

      • Brad

        Doc,

You don’t understand, the criminal can get their hands on any type of weapon they want for penny’s on the dollar. The legal gun owner has to go through hoops just to legally purchase a hand gun and then wait 14 days in certain states. You sir are clue less, one day you might sing a different tune if you are held up at gun point.

      • Doc Sarvis

I’ve been held up. I’m glad neither one of us got shot.

      • Brad

        Doc,

Why haven’t you started a movement to disarm the criminal in this country? What are you affraid of, that criminal coming back to take from you again, so tell me where was the police when you needed them the most?

The day when the criminal doesn’t have access to weapons of any type is the day I turn my weapons over to the police department! Until that day comes I’m keeping my weapons and will use them to protect my family. I have been trained and by the military; I even requalify annualy so I’m up on current law and criminal procedures.

      • Doc Sarvis

        Brad,
That criminal is in jail for his crimes. Many thanks to local police.

      • Brad

        Doc,

That’s great, but there’s thousands who get away with theft while in posetion of a gun every single day. I wish the police could stop all of them but they can’t, they are spread thin as it is.

      • eddie47d

Brad; Criminals can get there hands on guns for a variety of reasons but mostly because of our loose laws and careless citizens who have their guns stolen.

Ive been held up too Doc, and unlike you, I didnt like it a bit. Had a had a gun on me at the time, I assure you, this punk that robbed us wouldnt be robbing anyone anymore, and I would have saved the legal systems some time and money, because guys like this one, are in and out of the system constantly, sucking tax money out of all of us right and left. Now mind you Doc, I dont believe in violence. But I absolutely do believe in the use of self defense. Someone pulls a gun on you, and your packing, only one thing to do, come up shooting if you get the chance. Just as I will walk from a fight if I can, but when someone insists on delivering their force upon me, which has happened a couple of times in my life, I find them jelly in my hands as I am putting them down on the ground leaving them writhing in pain. Then I hurt them real bad. I call the cops and an EMS for them. Then they get the 600.00 EMS bill, and I file assault charges on them. Vengeance is my says the Lord, and just sometimes, he uses his servants on this earth to deliver his revenge. Amen.

Greg, you are SO RIGHT! Those of us who have been in danger see it a little different from those who have not. In 2005 when I was 66 a young man came in my back door. If I had not had my pistol he would have killed me. His own daddy said so at the court house a week later. When seconds count, police are only minutes away. They arrived within 2 minutes AFTER I finally had time to call them! Not one of them was here when he was coming up the stairs toward me! Thanks to my pistol, I am almost 72 and I AM ALIVE!!

So how many guns do you own?

      • Dan-o

Doc is obviously scared of guns, I’m sure he doesn’t drive ether since cars are an even bigger killer than gun. Car will be the next thing to be illegal, there will only be public transportation run by our government.

I’d have to say that the “paranoid” is the one who thinks that guns, inanimate objects, incapable of doing anything and in themselves as harmless as a fence post or lawn flamingo, are going to harm him and should be banned. What’s next, Mr. Paranoid? baseball bats? Plastic “sporks” that can be used to pop an eyeball? Table legs? Lug wrenches?
When lug wrenches are banned, only criminals will have lug wrenches.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Aint no paranoia about it Doc. After Obamination did his speech, he went to his party who informed him in a couple of weeks they would be coming out with a new gun control bill. They have seized on this shooting to make a political move out of it, just as they did on attacking and blaming Sarah Palin. They are low life opportunists who lack any kind of moral fabric in their being. To try to capitalize on someones shooting is despicable. They have no honor, corrupting the truth for their own political gain. But rest assure Doc, us normal people, and even many of their previous followers see right through these hateful measures that the democrats have taken. They have just given us thousands upon thousands of new voters. People are as dumb as they think, and their stepping to new lows in their now desperate times is exposing them more and more to ones who didnt see their vile ways before. They are crashing and burning right in front of everyone, and Im loving it.

  • s c

It is a FACT that some people can’t handle being FREE. They confuse being FREE with not having to THINK or be ACCOUNTABLE.
Every time I hear about another move to restrict or eliminate gun ownership, I am reminded that that those who will not heed history are condemned to repeat it. That is a FACT that I can’t change. And, I wouldn’t change it if I could.
Isn’t it wonderful NOT to see Queen Nancy sitting next to Biden when Congress gets together to listen to the prez? I wonder how she likes having to act like a mere mortal now [without being able to fly on an Air Force jet with family and friends]. It’s almost enough to make you think that common sense and sanity can be found in Washington (almost, that is).

    • http://deleted Claire

Criminals will always get guns. And this is a sad fact because there are so many criminals and nutjobs out there. These creeps have ruined the freedom for decent people. Gun control is a tough call. I approve of conceal and carry but there has to be a way to prevent criminals and wackos from having guns. Look how easy it was for the Ft. Hood shooter, and the nutjob that shot Giffords. Plus the fact that sometimes a sane person can “snap” and wreak havoc. Stricter background checks? There is no solution to this problem other than allowing decent people to conceal and carry. According to polls, the U. S. has the highest crime rate of any other nation. If this is true, then something needs to be done.

      • Mark

Claire, you have to be careful about your comment on the high crime rate in America. Right now, gun laws are more or less controlled by the state. So laws vary greatly from state to state, sometimes even county to county or city to city. Nearly without exception, those cities/states which have the strictest gun control laws have the highest crime rates(D.C., Chicago, for example). I live in Vermont which has probably the most liberal gun control laws in the US, and it is always ranked as one of the safest states by different studies that are done. Bottom line, its the person that kills, not the gun.

      • http://www.roman-empire-america-now.com/Roman-Empire-blog.html Douglas C. Smyth

Vermont is relatively safe because it has no large cities, no large population of poor and desperate people, which is why laxer gun control laws obtain.

It’s true that people kill people, but it’s so much easier with a gun.

One thing the US should do is restrict or outlaw interstate gun sales of particular kinds of weapons–the kinds favored by criminals–and leave state laws alone to allow variations on need. NY State needs a much stronger gun control law, and has one, because of the large cities and large impoverished populations in many of them.

What really kills people is desperation by other people, because most of their viable options have been eliminated. You have that in spades in a lot of inner cities. Make guns easily available just across the state lines, and people that desperate will buy them–and then go on to commit mayhem.

      • independant thinker

So you are saying the poor have no right to defend themselves only the rich.

      • eddie47d

        I. T. He didn’t say that, only the different problems between rural Vermont and bigger cities. The problems have to be handled differently in different communities.

      • JC

Every American has the rights afforded under the 2nd amendment. Period.

If they are poor and desperate, it’s because we already have too much nanny state government enabling and keeping them that way.
The problem of too much government is not solved by more government.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Gun crime affects a lot of people, and lets make it clear, I am all for people being allowed to have a gun, for the reason of self defense. However, if everyone is really concerned with people having guns, there is one thing that needs to be done. Profiling. Now as we look at gun crime, without mentioning any race, color, or creed, and we truthfully look at the statistics of who is involved in almost 80 percent of this gun play, and address that problem, we just may come up with a viable solution to making this violence stop. But when we play politically correct, and know there is a problem, but everyone is afraid to say what the problem is and bring it out into the open, and make those who are the cause of it to be held accountable for it, then nothing will ever change. As long as we keep doing this free pass for certain groups, because we either feel sorry for them, or are afraid to be labels, I dont know what the problem is, things are not going to get better. But accountability is the answer. Hold those accountable that are doing this the most. Gee, kind of like terrorist attacks. There is a certain group that does that, but we cant profile them to catch them either. Isnt this just peach. Political correctness is killing us, and making us victims of ourselves. Shame, shame.

      • http://deleted Claire

Mark–Looks like my husband and I will have to move to Vermont. I am tired of the same old crap here in Illinois. I have read and heard on TV that the crime rate is higher here in America than a lot of other countries! And I believe it. Our judicial system leaves a lot to be desired. Our prisons are full to the max. And as much as I hate to say this, I do believe in the death penalty. An eye for an eye. If it offends thee, pluck it out! And yes, don’t tread on me! I am tired of paying taxes to keep the killers housed, clothed, fed, etc. when there are honest and decent people in the U.S. that live in poverty. It is an neverending situation. As I have posted numerous times, a person has a choice–to live a good life or live the life of a criminal. No excuses for being a criminal.
I believe in conceal and carry. I am tired of the so-called laws that are made to protect the criminal. I am tired of the lawyers that get these bums off scott free. What about the decent people? Don’t we have a say in this matter? How many of the elected politicians want conceal and carry? Sure, they say a lot when they run for office but when they are elected it is a different story–same with illegals. I say to all politicians–put out or get out. Now all they can think of is repealing the health care reform. Okay, that’s fine. But it will take months and another year lost. Jobs, the war, the economy and illegals comes first, then get to the health care reform. Sorry folks if I offend anyone but this is how I feel. I am tired of the problems the administrations have heaped upon America and all Americans.

      • DaveH

Claire if you look at this chart you will see that the murder rates have steadily declined since the earliest year (1996) on the chart in almost all states. What has changed since then? Are people becoming kinder and gentler? I doubt it, as we can see from many of the posters on this website. So what has changed? One thing that has changed is that most of the states have passed “shall issue” laws, meaning the permitting of people to carry their sidearms concealed:
        http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state

See the map in the next comment for a history of shall issue laws.

Mark–I understand the point you are making in your first sentence. And I fully realize it is the people that kill, not the guns, plus the fact I am thankful I do not live in Chicago.

      • bear

You are right, Claire. The bad guys will always have guns. Why? Because everytime the gorernment passes a law against something, a black market is automatically created. When prohibition was eliminated, bootleggers and the undergorund Speak Easys disappeared. Look at the drug problem. We don’t only live in fear of the drugs, we live in fear of the ones who transport and sell them as well as the users. Those guys are fighting to keep the black market alive. It is their livlihood and they will kill you to protect it. Make drugs and marijuana legal and the problem’s landscape will change, as grotesquely as that may sound. Every time in every country around this planet when a government banned guns to legal, law abiding people, all that happened was their rights and ability to protect and defend themselves against someone WITH a gun, was taken away. Governments make honest people helpless when they enact such stupid laws. It is the lawmakers with that kind of mentality that are the enemy of a freethinking public. Guns do not kill people. Evil people with mal intent do! Pencils do not mispell words. People who are careless and do not proff read do! :)

It’ll happen alot more if you confiscate the firearms from the citizenry.Josef Stalins thugs used to kick in peoples doors and shoot them without provocation. What makes these liberals think it cannot happen here?

      • Harold Olsen

Such things like that happen here in Seattle, where I live, quite frequently. The only thing is, cops don’t just kick down your door. You look at them wrong or ignore them when you are walking across the street and they are apt to shoot you. We have a prosecutor who refuses to prosecute killer cops. They supported his election so he owes them.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        D. Melton,
It happens here in the US with real law enforcement, so what’s your point?? There was a man critically wounded in a bust a couple of years ago, in front of his wife and kid. The problem with this? THE WRONG ADDRESS!!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You all can slap the cops around if you like, but Im not going to . These guys have a tough job, that I know about from friends being cops, and actually, some police shows adequately show it, where the cop drives by and the punk drug dealers and porch squatters give them the finger and call them pig, and they cant do anything about it. Yet you guys act like they just pick people like me up and beat me, and kick in my door and drag me out because they want to. If a cop comes kicking in your door, youve got a 99 percent chance that you have done something wrong, didnt appear in court like you were supposed to, or have done something else, and now it is time to pay for your crime. Ive see these guys arrest dudes doing drug deals, and the dude tells them “whats the use pig, Ill be back on the street before you go home for supper tonight”. And usually they are, because the judges and lawyers let them out, for the right amount of money. You tell me that wouldnt eat at you if you were a cop, to arrest these scumbags, just to have some rich lawyer in cahoots with a judge to let them out, again, and again, and again? Its baloney. Sure, I agree, there are some bad cops out there, but there are also some damn good ones, who take their oath “To Protect and Serve” quite seriously. I know, I grew up with them, and still hang out with them time to time, and I know what they go through. I fully support our police force, and these fine men and women who put their lives on the line to keep me and my family safe. And they do a good job here.

      • http://deleted Claire

bear– My husband and I do not go around looking for trouble, but if trouble comes to us, we will handle it accordingly. My husband and I will keep our guns. There is no way my husband will ever give up his guns. No way. No ifs, ands, or buts. We will keep them. If the situtation ever arose and we had to defend ourselves, we will. I hope it never happens but if it does, it does.

Don’t compare the Ft. Hood shooter to the Tucson killer they’re two different apples. The Tucson killer is a whack job while the Ft. Hood shooter is a terrorist and a traitor.

You’ll never be able to decry a terrorist traitor until the job they intend to do is committed, meanwhile you can tell a whack job anytime.

      • eddie47d

        Obviously Not!

      • Vicki

A well armed and trained populace would easily be able to stop either the terrorist shooter or whack job shooter. Just look at Ft. Hood. Hundreds of well trained and armed soldiers….. Oh wait.

        Clinton disarmed them.

        Vicki,
Don’t confuse the Liberals with facts. They aren’t used to them.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Thats right. One armed teacher in Columbine would have saved a lot of lives and wounds. One armed teacher or student at what was that, Texas El Paso where the guy was shooting everyone, could have taken him out before he killed so many. And someone armed could have stopped this terrorist Ft. Hood guy. And in Tucson, one armed cohort of Gabby’s Giffords, or a person in the parking lot, could have and would have saved a lot of life and problems. But the evil guilty ones all were the ones that had the gun, where the law abiding people didnt. Just think what would happen if the whole country was this way. Mass gun control would bring this, where bad cats like this everywhere would be shooting their way to prosperity, and no one would be able to defend themselves. Criminals would be having a hey day, no doubt about it.

      • Vicki

        Beberoni writes:
“And someone armed could have stopped this terrorist Ft. Hood guy.”

Someone armed DID stop the terrorist. The problem was that when the shooting started he (a police officer) was only minutes away.

“The incident, which lasted about 10 minutes,[28] resulted in 30 people wounded, and 13 killed — 12 soldiers and one civilian; 11 died at the scene, and two died later in a hospital.[29][30]”

“According to polls, the U. S. has the highest crime rate of any other nation. If this is true, then something needs to be done.”

This is absoulute poopaganda. REad the following report: http://law.bepress.com/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=7212&context=expresso

Polls mean nothing. They’re opinions of people who for the most part are ignorant of the facts. That study has the facts. There are many nations with a higher per-capita gun crime rate than the US. You also have to bear in mind that the US has about 295,000,000 guns in circulation and canuckistan and the UK have none, yet they still have thousandas upon thousands of gun crimes. So it isn’t a matter of how many guns there are. The US wins that numbers games as we’re close to one gun for each person in the US and that is just the ones that the gubmint knows about. The determining factor is a matter of how many criminals there are per capita. Today in the US 294,999,000 harmed nobody. The other 1,000, in a population of 304,000,000, were used by criminals, most of whom can’t legally own guns under the terms of their priors. If they couldn’t use guns they’d have used knives or baseball bats.

      • Carlucci

“Poopaganda”. That sums it up perfectly. Gonna start using that one. How does this sound – B.O.’s teleprompter “speech” last night was pure poopaganda.

      • eddie47d

No teleprompter for Obama but Paul Ryan sure did use one. (Ryan is a very good speaker)

      • Vicki

      • Capt Canada

Where do you get your fact? No guns in circulation in Canada! Funny early blogs note that approximately 30 percent of Canadians own firearms. Oh, I get it you dont count muskets and black powder rifles. Since thats all we use up here when we leave our igloos to go hunt. Jeeze how asinine can you be.

      • kate8

Claire – One problem is that the the criminals don’t necessarily get guns legally. Guns pour across our border illegally and are sold illegally. So making stricter gun laws only hurts those who obey the laws.

Do we have the highest crime rate? I don’t know, because it depends on what one considers “crime”. In some countries murder of certain people is not considered a crime. But also consider that much of our crime is committed by foreigners on our soil, whether legally or illegally.

We need to look at the whole picture here, and we also need to understand how the facts are manipulated in pursuit of an agenda.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        kate8,
I’m quite sure that if the government would do their job and seal the border and deport all who are captured or detained, the crime rate in the US would lower drastically!!!

      • http://deleted Claire

JoeH–You are correct, if the drug dealers could be eliminated, that would help too.

      • DaveH

They could be eliminated, Claire, almost overnight, by decriminalizing drugs. But then, neither the drug warriors nor the drug lords want that, because both would lose their livelihoods. So expect to hear more horror stories everytime somebody suggests such a thing. Read this, Claire, and open your eyes:
        http://mises.org/daily/4842

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Not only the drug dealers Dave, but the lawyers, judges, polticians, dea and others are getting fat rich off of this “war on drugs” What it is, is a war to see who can get their hands on not only the government billions they supposedly spend fighting drugs, but on the bilions of profits the drug lords disperse to all these fine fellows to let their shipments roll in to this country. Your right Dave, these fellows want it to remain illegal, for that is wherein their money lies. If it were legalized, the money would go into the public coffers where the common man just might benefit from it, and they dont want that.

      • http://deleted Claire

kate8–Yeds, it is always the “pursuit of an agenda.” It remains to be seen in the days to come just exactly what the politicians will come up wiht, more stalling? More acting like it is an issue they don’t have to or want to deal with? I think they will do more stalling, just like the illegal situation.

I often lament the death of common sense in America. A good dose of it would cure a host of ills.

      • Vicki

Come to think of it that piece of common sense is right there in the 2nd Amendment. “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,…”

What is the militia? US Code Title-10 311
        Or

“I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.”

        http://www.constitution.org/mil/cs_milit.htm

All comes down to a free, moral and ARMED populace, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of THE PEOPLE to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

The true sign of a desperate party, the democrats. They have lambasted and cussed at and painted the republicans as outcasts who arent worthy of listening too, and now, when they are rendered powerless, they come crawling back, crying to reach across the aisle, trying to impress folks, hoping they werent paying attention these last 2 plus years. Well, I was paying attention, and so were millions of others, and this desperate move is another misfire by the democrats. After wanting nothing to do with bi-partisanship when you had complete control, and basically telling the other side you dont care what they think or want, and now you reduce yourselves to this? Come on man, what, are we stupid? Obama and the democrats are a lost cause, on their way out the door, and are desperate, and its going to be fun watching them circle the drain these next two years. Bye bye boys, it hasnt been nice knowing you. Oh yeah, and take Hillary with you please, and dont let the door hit you on the way out. And Michelle, please dont pull a Hill and Billy, and leave the furniture there when you leave. Thank you.

      • Tom from Idaho

        I Wholeheartedly agree, Bert!

    • Harold Olsen

I’m glad you said “almost.” I don’t believe our so-called lawmakers in Washington, DC have any idea what common sense is nor would they know how to use it if they did know what it was.

      • ace

IF ANY OF THEM HAD ANY COMMON SENSE THEY WOULDN:T BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!!!!

      • DaveH

Sorry, but you’re both wrong. The Politicians are riding happily on the backs of the citizens. It is the voters who have no “common sense”.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Thats right Dave. We are the ones that put them in there. And it us who will take them out. Each time they refuse to put this country first, vote them out and try someone else. It make take awhile, but when they start seeing they will be sent home if they dont represent us and put us first, slowly but surely, they will get the picture.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Oh, Im sure Pelosi still gets along. I would imagine she has it figured out how to still travel free, stay free and eat free wherever she goes. She is a sponge on society, just like the left wing liberals she serves that live on unemployment, food stamps and welfare.

Basicly Canada wants to turn all gun owners into crimanals. So they will. But when that happens only the criminals will have a gun. Whats next knives. I guess in canada they had better be ready to butter their toast with spoons. All this amounts to a pile of crap because the crimanals will just get their guns underground. Which I might add will just lead to more crime here in the U.S because the importers will have to steal them from somewhere. Mike L.

    • 45caliber

England has outlawed knives. And finger nail files, nail clippers, and a lot of other things. You cannot have anything with a point or an edge with you. The first person they charged was a newsman on a street corner. He had a little shop that sold papers which were delivered to him in tied bundles. He needed a pocket knife to cut the cords. After fining him, they agreed to let him have a pocket knife in a locked box bolted to the wall. He had to use it and then immediately lock it up again.

They even arrested one man because he had a semi-sharp point on his umbrella.

But they don’t arrest the thousands of burglars; they aren’t committing a “violent” crime.

      • Richard Pawley

Amazing but I’m not surprised. The sad thing is that as my mom who passed on three months ago at age 92 told me more than 40 years ago “what they do in England we will eventually do here.” So far I have seen a lot of that to be true. All of this comes down to basic philosophy. The Progressive Marxists believe that they are superior to other human beings. It’s called a “God Complex” and is the most common mental disease on the planet according to one eminent psychiatrist. If these progressive ‘citizens of the world’ believe something than everyone else should believe it also. (I absolutely knew when Miss Hawaii answered the question a couple of weeks ago if she thought of herself as a citizen of Hawaii or the United States or of the world, that when she answered that she was a citizen of the world, that she would not win the Miss America title).
I didn’t call my politically incorrect book “THE LAST DAYS OF THE LATE GREAT UNITED STATES” for the fun of it. I also didn’t mention the 3,500,000 crimes per year that were PREVENTED by someone having a gun in the USA because I could not verify the statistics in time, not did I flat out say that I believed that unless we had a spiritual revival such as we had prior to the formation of our country that there was little hope for us as a nation. I did however point out that one Russian ‘think tank’ had come to the conclusion that the USA would break up into five countries after congress collapses the dollar and trashed the economy with their irresponsible spending of borrowed money and the huge inflation caused by that spending. (I have a strong hunch that many in congress in both major parties are simply mouthpieces for those who want International Governance and International Banking to rule everything but I can’t prove that and like everyone else have to go by what they do, and not what they say). However, both Democrats and Republicans live in fear of the Tea Party because they are (so-far) true independents, not people like Lieberman who think we should emulate the Communist Chinese and control the free speech on the Internet, the equivalent of the free press in the days of our founders. Unlike our president I don’t think we are “burdened with to much information.” Of course there are crazies on both sides and even our income tax is called a ‘progressive tax’ – invented by Karl Marx the founder of communism. A much fairer system would be one in which every one paid 18% tax, even the so-called poor who have been richer than even the middle class in some countries with color TV’s and automobiles, and who are certainly richer than any other ‘so called poor’ on the entire planet. However some in the current administration want to reduce us to the level of everyone else so we will all be equally poor and there is a probability that they will succeed. (Not this year or next but print this out and save it until the end of the decade and see how much better off we are then than we are now if we don’t get our insane spending under control). A flat tax where everyone paid 18% (along with a balanced budget amendment)no matter how much they earned would allow everyone who worked hard to keep what they earned and the harder they worked the more they would keep. In any event that is probably to down to earth or common sense to ever be popular, especially to those who make the rules and have a thousand loopholes to get around paying taxes. We prefer complexity rather than simplicity, a person with degrees rather than one with experience.
However, a quote from “The Meaninglessness of the U. S. Constitution” (Chapter 5 of my last book) may be of interest on the topic of disarming honest citizens “In the first decade of the 21st Century the country of Australia banned handguns so that it’s citizens could not protect themselves from the bad guys. Violent crime immediately increased 40%. Innocent victims were again part of the great social experiment that proved when only the criminals have guns the public will suffer and often die….
“In the year prior to the ban on personal self-defense in Washington, D.C. just over 60% of all murders there were by guns but after the ban, when only the criminals could have guns, the percentage rose, so that thirty years later the percentage of murders by guns in “the murder capital of the country” had risen to over 80%. In fact over the next 30 years the rate of murder rose and fell across the country but in the city where the citizens were truly defenseless it rose the most.
“This should not have been “news” as Ireland first banned handguns four years before Washington, D.C. and the murder rate by gun rose dramatically, and over the years was well over twice what it was when citizens could defend themselves. In 1998 England and Wales got the bright idea that their citizens would be better off if they too were unable to defend themselves from criminals and they banned guns. The rate of crime by guns really took and increased 340% in the seven years following what I call these “support your local criminal” laws. I lost all interest in even visiting there after that.”
One of the sad things in this country is that we have for the most part become so politically correct that we don’t report people like the mentally disturbed person who shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who should have been hospitalized long ago and then we make excuses for those for those like the major who killed all those fellow soldiers at Fort Hood. I do not know the answer to all the problems we have as a nation but a return to the God of the Bible and the spiritual beliefs, varied as they were, of those who founded our nation seems to be the only way I see of returning our nation from a broke and bankrupt busybody to the great nation we once were. We really don’t need another World War to prove we are unique in all the world and not just another Rome that has seen it’s best days. May God bless America and all who read this. Dum Spiro Spero!

      • stone

Americans will never have their guns taken from them. It will never happen. NYC mayor wants to see more laws limiting who can get a gun.You can impose all the gun control laws you want. The criminals will still get their hands on one.

I do not own a gun and don’t want one but would never try an stop anyone else. It’s a shame there isn’t some way to stop the underground trafficing of guns. Criminals and the mentally ill, will always fine a way.

      • http://Illinois'17th Old Henry

        Stone:

I hope you are correct, but have my doubts. Der Fuhrer and Hillary are working with the U.N. to nullify our Second Ammendment and remove guns from our citizens.

Unless we continue to elect more and more Tea Party candidates to Congress and state legislatures we will eventually loose our gun rights and / or our lives.

      • Denniso

So why does Meyers live in Canada?

At least two recent studies show that more guns equals more carnage to innocents. One survey by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that guns did not protect those who had them from being shot in an assault — just the opposite. Epidemiologists at Penn looked at hundreds of muggings and assaults. What they found was that those with guns were four times more likely to be shot when confronted by an armed assailant than those without guns. The unarmed person, in other words, is safer.

Other studies have found that states with the highest rates of gun ownership have much greater gun death rates than those where only a small percentage of the population is armed. So, Hawaii, where only 9.7 percent of residents own guns, has the lowest gun death rate in the country, while Louisiana, where 45 percent of the public is armed, has the highest.

      • JC

Denniso, that whole premise makes no sense at all to me.
First of all who commissioned (paid for) this study?
What was the criteria for being shot while armed?

Just because some eastern liberal University submits a report on any given subject does not mean it has any validity in the real world.
A perfect example of this is the IPCC’s report by “thousands of leading scientists” which turned out to have about 6 actual climatologists involved…the rest were economic advisers and janitors etc…and most of them wanted their names taken off the final doctored report.

I don’t buy any of it.

      • Dan az

        Dennso
have you ever seen what a #2 pencil can do to your eyeball? Maybe we should outlaw them to!Now that your computer will be outlawed soon for provocation we wont have to put up with your dribble much longer right?

      • Denniso

Use your brain…when was the last time that a no. 2 pencil killed 6 and wounded 14 people in about 15 seconds? Same goes for any other weapon. High powered, semi automatic guns w/ large clips are unique as killing machines. That’s why they should be controlled more so than a no. 2 pencil. Can you follow that?

      • Michael J.

        Richard Pawley,
Thanks for your post. It’s encouraging to know that people are becoming aware of the scourge that is Political Correctness and the Marxist creators from The Frankfurt School. Political Correctness plays a role in almost everything that is wrong with this country and the world today. In other words the communist plan is working splendidly.

      • Carlucci

Richard Pawley is right on. The people with the most common mental illness (God complex) are also described in Dr. Phil’s first book as the “Kings and Queens of the Forest”. Unfortunately, we all know people like this. They want the world to know that they are the next truly big thing, and everything they have and do is better than yours and you. They walk around with a superior attitude and treat everyone else like unwashed peasants. They are legends in their own minds, and are the kind of people that the rest of the world reacts to in a passive/aggressive way; i.e,. you would never tell these insufferable jerks that they left their car windows down on a rainy day. Sadly, many of them choose to enter the political arena, or become “educators” because they believe they know what is best for everyone and love to control others.

The character Victor Komarovski from the book Dr. Zhivago said it best about Lara’s fiance Pasha, who went on to become a psychotic general in the Russian army: “There are two kinds of men and only two. And that young man is one kind. He is high-minded. He is pure. He’s the kind of man the world pretends to look up to, and in fact despises. He is the kind of man who breeds unhappiness, particularly in women. Do you understand?”

Women like Pelosi Galore, and Hillary the closet lesbian also match this description.

      • Tinman

Since you bring up God and the bible, your 18% tax rate is wrong.
If 10% is good enough for Jesus then it is good enough for the Sh1t sucking government we have!

    • MR

Don’t like Canada’s gun laws? Move to Somalia, the gun laws are none existent, so is government. A true libertarian paradise.

      • jim

Are you so STUPID and IGNORANT that you don;t have the intelligence to grasp at all, what is being said!!!??? What a MORON!!!

      • skip

Jim – review of your blog certainly defines who the moron is. By the way, those 14 police who were shot this week by gun carriers shows the value of carrying guns for self defense. No hope if our police are slaughtered, and they were slaughtered by guns, as best I can tell.

      • always right

Those cops were shot not because the had guns for self defense but because they assumed that because of gun laws that the bad guys WOULDN’T have guns. Basically, poor police work. They died from dumb. (Ex cop here). Gun control is a fools game for dullards. It gives the naive, who believe in it, a false feeling of safety as they “know” that there aren’t any guns out there. Usually the find out the truth of their delusion by ending up on the wrong end of one, wishing they’d had one of their own and standing there 100% defenseless. Where gun control laws are tight, crime surges. Where they’re lax, crime drops. Read the facts & weep, “gun CONTROL” (because its all about “control”, not guns or criminals)…
http://law.bepress.com/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=7212&context=expresso is not about controlling crimes. It is about keeping the law-abiding citizen disarmed.

The best way to prevent gun crimes is to not sell guns to liberals. Because criminals love gun control laws (unarmed victims!) and lax law enforcement this would include virtually all criminals and most the minorities who are hugely overrepresented in gun crimes. This would address those who make Somalia, and most of sub-Sharan Africa, such a wonderful place.
It’s all in that study to which I just posted the link.
Russia has over 4 times the gun crime rate of the US and has an absolute ban on all guns. Can you “gun CONTROL” advocates explain that?

      • DaveH

        Good response, Always.

      • LeRoy Z.

Skip, those police officers were not slaughtered by guns…they were slaughtered by people using guns. The guns don’t do anything on their own. It’s somewhat the same type of distinction people like to make when someone says Muslims destroyed the WTC on 9/11. They get all in a huff and stipulate that it was Muslim EXTREMISTS. Funny how the anti-gun crowd always misses this distinction. A criminal commits a crime and right away quick they want to take my gun away from me and every other law-abiding citizen. I saw a poll on crime statistics once in which convicts were asked what was the greatest deterrent to home invasion. Invariably, they responded that their greatest fear was that the homeowner would have a gun. The anti-gun crowd will NEVER tell you about anything like this though. I find it quite curious.

      • Jim Harrison

How immoral! Those guns should be hanged by the neck until dead! Until now, I didn’t realize guns could kill people. I didn’t know they had a mind of their own. I always thought it was PEOPLE who killed people. Now I’m afraid that shotgun I have in my closet will load itself one night and walk out and kill me in my sleep! Maybe if I register it, it will have second thoughts and become a nice little law-abiding gun. Thank you for that lesson on a gun-free and safe America. If you had been one of our founding fathers, perhaps we wouldn’t be bothered with that pesky Second Amendment!

      • Vicki

We should point out to the anti-gun crowd that AIRPLANES destroyed the WTC and that they (waves to Nancy Pelosi) must immediately surrender their airplanes and we will ban airplanes promptly as they kill people. ;)

      • PMS

They were slaughtered by the people handling the gun. The gun didn’t jump out and shoot anyone by itself.

      • Art S

Jim: I suspect that you are a liberal in all your thinking. Instead of providing a sensible plan, you resort to the liberal mantra of calling names for anyone who does not support your thinking. How does calling names make one safer?

      • http://Illinois'17th Old Henry

Has anyone heard any information regarding the religious / political leanings of the shoters of those police officers?

I read a few months ago that the Muslims were getting ready to begin their next step in terrorizing the U.S. and that was shooting police officers and law enforcement individuals. It was going to be done in what appeared to be random fashon.

      • karen

Jim there is no need to resort to calling people Morons. That type of retoric makes me glad you probably don’t have a gun or the knowledge, and poise gun owners possess to defend themselves.

      • always right

Karen, there’s a greatreason for calling thoseo n the left and anti- 2nd Amendment people “morons”. It is because they are, at least from a practical standpoint.

      • http://Illinois'17th Old Henry

        Jim, Jim, Jim:

Now, remember Der Fuhrer’s decree. We must be civil. You don’t want the girlie-mon Mathews (Mr. tinkle down his leg) blaming someone getting shot on you….

I’ve been to Somalia. Felt pretty safe there with my rifle. It is true they do not have much of a government (and for that matter morons like you). That’s what makes it safer.

      • skip

The last time I checked, Somalia was perhaps one of the most dangerous places on earth – pirates, wholesale slaughter, dragging our soldiers through the streets behind Jeeps. But perhaps your definition of safe is different than the rest of sane people.

      • chow

That’s exactly it dumb azz! the soldier’s have guns too but they were defeated by the terrorist. but one thing you have to understand is no one in Somalia is prying on individuals because they’re all armed and all belong to a gang. If you can’t tell the difference between unarmed individual victimized by a crime to an armed individual killed in Somalia, there’s something terribly wrong with you.

      • DaveH

Mexico has strict gun control. It works well doesn’t it, Skip?

Here’s a little anecdote some may find interesting. I went to Switzerland the year I graduated and traveled around the country for 6 weeks sightseeing and visiting relatives. In that entire time, I saw a total of one, that ONE, police car. I was sitting at an intersection with two civilian cars that had been in a fender-bender. The other curious thing was this. Time and time again, we would see groups of men walking down the street, boarding trains or buses, exiting drinking establishments, and they would be carrying machine guns, sidearms, rifles, you name it. And no one got worried, lots of people waving to them, talking, you get the drift. No one thought anything of it. I asked about this of course and got quite an education. Most of the time, when I asked about burglaries, I got very condescending reactions. I was very often told if I thought I could get away with burglarizing someone, go ahead and give it a try! What was going on was that all able-bodied men in the country were required to periodically undergo military training for, I think, 4 weeks. And everyone kept their military firearms with them at home, ready to go at all times. I’m sorry I don’t have a link to check the crime stats of that country. Might be interesting.

      • DaveH
      • DaveH

Now, compare Switzerland’s prison population with the United State’s prison population.
Switzerland has about 5,000 people in prison of a total population of about 7.8 million people (.06% of the population).
The United States has about 7 million people in prison of a total popuation of about 320 million people (2.2% of the population).
Yet, the families in Switzerland are required by law to have guns.

Chow; Maybe you are the dumb Azz. Somalians pray upon each other all the time. The more guns they have the more the other person gets threatened. There is no safety in Somalia because of guns for it is just the opposite. Less government has made that country less safe not more safe and the gangs have taken over.

      • Vicki

        DaveH writes:
“Here is an example of how police feel about citizen rights WITHOUT gun control.”

Looks like murder most foul. Sad that even with clear video evidence the police get a “justified shooting” verdict. The guy with the golf club was not even advancing on the home invaders.

Sorry the loss of civility happened years ago when no knock warrants were invented. Why would the victim assume that someone yelling “police” is actually the police? If someone were of a criminal nature and liked to do home invasions that is one of the tricks they would use to force submission on the home owner/occupant.

Oh it’s illegal to impersonate a police officer? If they are breaking into an occupied dwelling thus breaking a bunch of laws already, why would they care about some silly little law like that.

      • http://Illinois'17th Old Henry

        Skip:

The reason they felt safe dragging our soldiers around behind a jeep was due to the fact that dick-for-brains was in the People’s House. They knew he was focused on his next BJ and who he could molest than actually protecting our nation.

        In retrospect, they were correct.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Somalia is dangerous because the criminals have the guns. The warlords who take over by force have the guns. Arm the sane people, those who wish to have nothing more than a peaceful existance, and the trouble would soon stop. But when the evil folks and criminals have the guns, you have trouble. Case in point, look how much Australia’s crime rates have risen since they went to gun control. Look at Washington DC, right here in the states. They have the strictist gun control in the nation, and the highest crime rate. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

      • Vicki

        Beberoni writes:
“Somalia is dangerous because the criminals have the guns. ”

ONLY the criminals have the guns. Key word ONLY. We have to keep reminding people that the problems come from the uneven balance of power.

Your original statement feeds the liberal myth that guns are bad so we have to be more specific.

      • Les

LOL – MentalRetard Troll. DC has the strictest gun laws in the nation, it also has the highest per capita gun deaths. Hey, but not to worry, the point isn’t whether or not it works or makes sense; those laws just make creepy, self-righteous imbeciles feel holy. It’s too bad a good carrier wasn’t at the Tuscon rally to put a swift end to Mr.Crazy from the MR crowd. I can cite a thousand cases where the gunmen died when they jumped the wrong crowd. They should check their voter registration before they pull their piece.

      • DaveH

I think it goes far deeper than that, Les. The politicians know that in order to fully step on the citizens, the first thing they need to do is ban guns. They will use whatever flowery promises they can muster to seduce the ignorant Liberals into being their pawns.

      • Lacey

Look what happened in New orleans after Katrina. The first thing they did was go from house to house taking their guns away. What happened innocent people who could no longer protect themselves were being murdered by gangs and robbers.

      • DaveH

That has nothing to do with Libertarianism, you Lying Liberal. Somalia has been in conflict since the mid 1970s when a Communist regime took over:

You want chaos? Just vote for ever increasing Government and you will get it.

      • stone

You can’t paint all liberals with the same brush. I know plenty of libs. who are gun owners and are against gun control. Congresswomen Gifford is pro gun.

      • DaveH

        Stone,
A Liberal in my book is anybody who advocates Big Government as the solution. Thus many Republicans are Liberals.
Conservatives agree with our Founders that the Best Government is Small Government.

Do you think I care if some Liberals advocate gun ownership? Actually that is the only thing that scares me about gun ownership.

      • wandamurline

I believe that Thomas Jefferson said it best….

“Those who pound their guns to plows…..will plow for those who do not”

I believe that this explains why Americans have the right to bear arms.

      • JC

        You might appreciate this.
It’s taken from another blogger in another thread.
He poses some very good questions:

“How is the right to bear arms no longer appropriate to the current world? Has today’s government proved wiser, more noble, or more trustworthy than the government of our forefathers? Are there less people throught our land that will break any law they have to (including gun laws) to illegally take what they want than there were years ago? Is mankind less greedy, sinful, or governments less apt to become tyrannical than they were in the 18th century? Have we somehow figured out how to just get along? Until we do, until there is no more clash of culture or opinion and not one ounce of greed or lust of power in any living being’s heart, until there are no more laws broken or governments necessary; the innocent citizens will need their guns, because the criminals and the tyrants will have theirs.”

        Awesome huh? :)

      • Stan Smith

@ MR dude you need to move to mexico lets see how long you will survive Even Law abiding mexican citizens can even own a gun due to their gun control laws murder rate is high no wonder why the mexicans are fleeing to the US legally and Illegally!

      • Yankee Will

        Mr. Smith? Mr.Clueless!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

The murder rate in Mexico is high, because the government is dirty and corrupt and in bed with whoever pays them the most dollars, and in their case, it is murdering drug lords and arms smugglers and people smuggles, you know, people doing illegal things. And all the criminals have guns, and have more force than even the police and government. They have gun control, and this is what you get. Lawlessness. Kind of like Washington D.C., you know, the city with the most crime in the country, and also, the city with the strictest gun control laws? Yes, its kind of like that. If your interested in the truth.

      • John

MR you know nothing of gun laws their history or the values of liberty. Please get back on your knees and worship your masters.

      • http://Illinois'17th Old Henry

        Correct.

The governmemt is supposed to be afraid of the governed, not the other way around. That is why they have been working over many decades to slowly remove guns from our citizenry.

The Second Ammendmant states that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed upon. ANY gun regulations are an infringement. Hence ALL gun regulations should be eliminated.

The Japs stated that the ONLY thing that kept them from invading the U.S. on our west coast was the fact that they knew there would be a gun behind every tree. It had nothing to do with anything the facsist FDR did.

You are so right. The democrats want to remove all guns so that they can take control of everyone and everything. But they are too damn dumb to realize, that there will still be for one, a boat load of criminals that will have arms, and will grow in strength and prosperity if all the law abiding citizens are dis-armed by the government. And two, a lot of what used to be law abiding citizens, will raise their arms against this government trying to take their weapons, and there will be mass blood shed, as I truly feel, that we the people, will fight for our right to remain free, even from the tyranny of our own government. They try to take the guns, they will suffer much bloodshed, no doubt about it.

I dont like Canada’s gun laws, but I dont have to move anywhere, because I dont live there. I wont visit there again either, as when I crossed the border they chose to dump out our clothes bags on the ground and were just downright rude, thinking of themselves as some kind of a god over me. They are a bunch of pacifist appeasers, who right now as we speak are in the process of being taken over by muslim influence, and they will willingly give it up without a fight. I guess its the french in them. Then one day they will call “Mr. American, help me, help me, and we probably will go and free them, so that they can poop their own pants again and we will have to clean it up. So I dont go up there anymore, and a whole lot of us that used to enjoy fishing trips up there, have all decided to put our money where our mouths are, and not give them a dime of it, as they dont deserve it. They are a bunch of patsy little girlie men, and are pretty damn stupid thinking making guns illegal will stop crime. All that does, and everyone knows it, is make it so two groups have guns. Criminals, and the government. And it will never fly here. We will fight before we surrender our arms. And I dont have one now, but when they first start doing this, Im getting two of them. And I guarantee you, the criminals already have theirs. Pacifism fails, each and everytime.

Sorry if your feelings were hurt because your clothes were dumped out. By all means judge all Canadians based on the actions of customs officials. However, if your attitude and demeanor in person were as arrogant and condescending in person as the tone in your blog. Your lucky they didnt do an anal probe. Canadian criminals, and Mexican criminals get their guns from the same place: the US, where gun laws are lax enough that they don’t have to register them through various loopholes insisted upon by the NRA.

If there were stricter control of guns, especially assault rifles and large magazine guns in the US, criminals in ALL THREE COUNTRIES would have a much more difficult time getting illegal guns.

Actually, the most effective control would be over ammunition.

Now, as to the notion that having a gun protects you: too often it endangers you and your loved ones, instead. Unless you become trained and comfortable in the use of a gun, having one in your house, is an invitation to a criminal to grab it from you and use it against you.

That said, in rural areas rifles and shotguns should be available for hunting and to kill nuisance animals. They could easily be subject to registration, however, which would make it easier for police to trace them if they are stolen by criminals.

      • always right

Oh pullleeezzzeeeee!!!! One cannot buy fully automatic firearms in the US without a Federal license and that is what is favored by the messican criminals. Their stuff is largely stolen from the army, up to and including M-2 .50 cal. machine guns and M-60. 7.62 machine guns mounted on Humvees, or purchased on the international black market by the truckload. If one can bring tons of cocaine into messico by truck or boat one can also bring tons of firearms. That’s a no-brainer to a rational person. A full-auto AK-47 can be purchased from middle eastern gun dealers for as little as $150. The guns in Canada are probably largely stolen in the US as canuckistanis can’t legally buy in the US under Federal firearms laws. The problem with your “logic” is that your own argument defeats your own argument. Obviously, gun CONTROL laws don’t work or the criminals in canuckistan wouldn’t have guns from the US, stolen or otherwise. They’d obey your stupid-arsed laws. But crimianls don’t obey laws, do they.

      • eddie47d

Oh pleaazzeee always right, Not! Meyers is exploiting your fears and you are loving it. Canadian deaths per 100,000 is far lower than in the US and they have had gun control since 1892. Gun deaths reached a peak in Canada in 1975. There were 611 homicide deaths in 2008 and 200 of them were gun deaths. Only 5.4% of Canadians own a gun so they are doing quite well without Americas obsession with guns. Canada still has a small gang problem and they get their weapons from the USA. There are numerous articles on the lower gun fatalities so check out the web.

According to the United Nations, Canada ranks third among the developed
western coutries (behind the US and Norway) in civilian ownership of
firearms.[40] A 1992 survey sponsored by the UN reported that 26% of
Canadians, over 7,000,000 people, own firearms.

Vickie; Where is JC’s supporting sites? Why don’t you challange this “conservative” for “proof”. Sounds a little too convenient for me.

      • eddie47d

Rob;In 1992 33% of Canadians owned guns. In 1997 only 17% owned guns. The first gun control law was in 1892 and called the “Criminal Code of Canada”.There has been 11 other gun control bills passed in Canada since 1920.

      • JC

Actaully eddie, I belong to several Canadian Shooting Sports Associations. 7 out of 33 million Canadians are “registered” gun owners. By the governments own account, they estimate that 60% of Candian gun owners are non-compliant to the registry…so no one really knows how many guns or gun owners there are in Canada, although it is believed that there are some 80 million guns in the country. That would be due to the very high number of Canadians who are veterans and that Canada is a sportsman’s paradise.
And that’s just fine by me.

as I said, you anti-gunners’ own arguments defeat your own arguments. Here’s your latest: “Canada still has a small gang problem and they get their weapons from the USA.”

That is why Canuckistan has fewer murders: a “small gang problem”, not a large one like we have here. It isn’t the guns, Eddie, it is the criminals with guns. If it is the guns, can you explain why, with a known 295,000,000 gun in the US, there aren’t 295,000,000 murders every year? You also note that here, intentionally or otherwise, that the gun control laws are a failure as the gangs there STILL have guns, just as do the gangs in the UK, Ireland & Russia. Theirs DON’T come from the US. They come from the European and middle eastern black market, just as the guns in canuckistan would if they didn’t steal them in the US; yes “steal”. Funny thing about criminals: they’re armed in spite of laws and they commit crimes in spite of laws.

I notice that you completely ignore the issue of messican guns.

      • Henryptnm

Organized criminals don’t need the U.S. to get weapons. The biggest trafficer of automatic weapons and any heavy stuff is the Russian Mob. Look at the assault rifles and other guns what the Mexican Drug Cartel uses. Russian and Eastern European made. When the Soviet Union fell, a lot of weapons went unaccounted for. On T.V., they showed raids in Russia by Russian police on places where they found a lot of automatic weapons. Organized criminals always work together to their own advantage.

      • D. Melton

Federal authorities say more than 60,000 U.S. guns of all types have been recovered in Mexico in the past four years, helping fuel the violence that has contributed to 30,000 deaths.

Carter, 76, has operated four Carter’s Country stores in the Houston metropolitan area over the past half-century. In the past two years, more than 115 guns from his stores have been seized by the police and military in Mexico.
        Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/nationworld/ci_16852188#ixzz1C9vbzjFq

        Do the math. 115/60,000=0.196%

But figures lie and liars do figure….
In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced — and of those, 90 percent — 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover — were found to have come from the U.S.

But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes.

        http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/02/myth-percent-small-fraction-guns-mexico-come/

5114/29000=17.6% That does not address the guns stolen or legally purchased and then sold. Last time I checked, possession of full auto weapons without the appropriate tax stamp could result in your murder by agents of the federal government.

        Want more?

Allegations have surfaced suggesting that one of the guns used by Mexican bandits during the firefight in which Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed might have been smuggled into Mexico with the knowing assistance of ATF officials. If these allegations prove to be true, it is quite possible that the long troubled agency could be dismantled. Even if there proves to be no connection with Agent Terry’s death, the scrutiny generated by an investigation could crash the agency.

Are you for real? When you live in a country where some nut decides to fire on anyone, I like the idea that I have a gun in a holster that is hidden. I took several courses and learned gun safety and learned how to hit the small center dot in the target….so, I can sure as hell take our the perpetrator….I feel a lot less victimized because I have a permit to carry. I’m a 63 year old grandmother, and I have been using a gun since I was 6. • David

Get your facts strait. The firearms industry in the US is totally regulated. Every gun has a serial number and everytime it moves the paperwork must track its movement. The manufacturer sells it to the distributor, the distributor sells it to the wholesaler, the wholesaler sells it to the dealer who sells it to the customer. Each and every one of these transactions is logged in a hard bound book. Everyone in this chain must be licensed by the federal government. When the firearm is sold to the customer it is registered. The BATF regularly visits gun stores and checks the receipts of firearms against the inventory and sales. If one is missing the store is normally shut down. There is no way to buy an unregistered gun in the US unless it is done illegally or the firearm is so old it qualifies as a curio or relic. Almost all of the illegal traffic in handguns are stolen handguns. The US made M-16s that are showing up in the hands of the Mexican narco-gangs were sold to foreign nations who re-sold them to the narco-gangs at a huge profit. They may be US made but they were sold to a”legitimate” buyer with UN and US State Department approval. That buyer was not supposed to re-sell them but they did! Did it ever occur to you that truckloads of drugs illegally enter the US every day. Do you think for a second that the same smugglers don’t smuggle firearms into the US daily.

      • eddie47d

That means that there are too many gun dealers who are willing to skirt the laws to get these weapons into the market.More insane loopholes that no one takes respnsibility for and petty excuses.(the other guy did it).

      • JeffH

“loopholes” another liberal talking point with no real meaning.

Federal background checks for all firearm sales are handled through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This system is managed by the FBI. The entire purpose of NICS is to determine immediately if a person could lawfully purchase a firearm. This check is performed for each firearm transfer. Meaning every firearm type (handguns, rifles, and shotguns) are checked, and each time a person buys a firearm from a commercial dealer they are checked (if you buy one gun on Monday and another gun on Friday your background will be run twice). The Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) that the purchaser is dealing with will call their designated number and the system with either allow, deny, or delay the transaction.

The “gunshow loophole” is somewhat of a misnomer as at a gunshow every firearm sold by a commercial dealer must be checked with NICS. However, private sellers do not have to go through NICS, but this is not necessarily a loophole as transfers between individuals are not exclusive to gunshows. BATFE agents do make regular visits to gun show.

      • JC

Every American has the rights afforded under the 2nd amendment until they are declared criminal or insane. So if there are loopholes in the law…then the Law is an Ass anyway. There is no need for a law that has loopholes and no need for loopholes when there are no ridiculous laws of control.

      • eddie47d

All laws are broken by someone at some time so there are indeed loopholes.Look at our tax laws ;loopholes up the kazoo. Those should be closed too.

      • JC

        Pretty consistent eddie…
Again you point to laws that shouldn’t exist at all, in the first place.

      • JeffH

Uh…eddie? I’m sure you can produce some evidence to your statements regarding the “gun law loopholes”, afterall this whole conversation isn’t about “tax loopholes” which has nothing at all to do with the subject. Are you trying to change the subject or attempting to deflect the issue in a different direction to avoid providing some substance to the subject at hand? I know the answer in case you choose to make some nasty remark.

      • JC

American Rifleman Magazine did an article on the whole “loophole” hoopla…byu their own account and after investigating more than a dozen gun shows, BATFE found not one…not one, instance of any gun show loop hole being utilized. It’s a myth.

BATFE In The Dark On Mexican Drug Guns

Jan. 24, 2011 Agency experts admit they have no idea how many guns go to Mexico from U.S. Agency experts admit they have no idea how many guns go to Mexico from U.S. Has no way to get the information either “90%” figure used by U.S. media and government pundits is unsupportable No desire to get the number or conflict with public statements Exclusive to The Uninvited Ombudsman LAS VEGAS — In personal conversations at the SHOT Show with four high-level Justice Dept. officials, including knowledgeable BATFE experts speaking on condition of anonymity, it became apparent that a commonly cited figure used by the “news” media to attack American gun stores and gun rights is a complete fabrication. No method exists to obtain the information. The agency has no mandate or desire to do so. Even if the information could be obtained or deduced from what few records exist, they would be reluctant to release it to the public and anger their superiors, they say. From the head of the State Dept. to the heads of various departments within the agency, the 90% gun-running stat has been standardized despite it being completely false. Hillary Clinton, the current Secretary of State has publicly repeated the remark, made by Mr. Obama, who said at a Mexican press conference, “More than 90 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States, many from gun shops that line our shared border.” FactCheck.org provides interesting background on the false nature of these quotes: http://www.factcheck.org/politics/counting_mexicos_guns.html New information, according to our sources: –Corruption, incompetence and inefficiency within the Mexican government itself prevents those officials from actually knowing how many guns they confiscate in the first place, from the illegal-vegetable cartels fighting Mr. Calderon’s failed war on some drugs. –An unknown number of these weapons are recycled right back into the cartels through bribes and theft, further clouding any numbers that are eventually provided to U.S. bureaucrats. Without these numbers, and ratios or comparisons are meaningless. –Mexico does not release such information in a forthright way to U.S. officials, and what we do get is of unknown quality or accuracy. This makes any comparison or ratio of U.S. traces to the totals mere guesswork with less credibility than a routine issues poll conducted by ideological groups. –An unknown percentage of confiscated-gun information in Mexico is sent to the U.S. for tracing. It is believed to be below 33%, and may be as low as ten percent or less. With no way to know this number, the percentages quoted by American leaders can barely be called propaganda. Only some guns with serial numbers or other markings, which may indicate a U.S. connection are submitted, making the quoted percentages preposterous. –Of the traces actually conducted, which itself is only a portion of the total, officials made it quite clear that while American origin could theoretically be determined for some segment of the traces, determining how many of these are straw purchase and hence from border gun shops is essentially impossible. They cited many reasons for this, including the fact that only the original purchaser can be identified. Guns bought years ago could go through many hands before making it to: a prohibited possessor (a likely source of many of the firearms, they said), an after-market straw purchaser (cannot be determined), theft (only distinguished if the then-current owner filed a report) or other means. The agency does NOT compile such statistics because they realize it would be a fruitless exercise in futility. Among the answers repeatedly given for why the numbers are so bad, why top officials are using the now openly bogus figures, what the chances for future improvement might be, and why they won’t publicly admit the truth or confront the leadership and help reestablish a semblance of credibility for the agency, were, “I have no knowledge of those statistics,” and “I have no access to that information.” Reports surfacing from South America suggest that cartels, overflowing with cash and influence, send truck convoys (not just trucks) to aging military warehouses in Central and South America, stuff them with firearms sent by the U.S. and other world powers over the decades to prop up various banana governments, and obtain more firepower in one load than an army of drug-lord indebted hos can buy on 4473 forms from legitimate dealers in a lifetime. Pictures staged by federal authorities to display captured weaponry, featuring fragmentation grenades, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), 20mm and 40mm cannon shells and other military ordnance not available from any U.S. stores, support the claims that drug cartels hardly need to shop at retail and pay sales tax. Additionally, the ever-popular communist-designed AK-47 and similar weapons might come through the U.S. in some cases, but the point of origin for these is obviously not the U.S., a fact completely ignored among all the fuss. One knowledgeable source believes that less than 10% of all Mexican cartel armaments come from U.S. sources, in the sense of illegal retail purchases smuggled across the border. Some U.S. originated arms, supplied to the Mexican government in an official capacity, leak into the black market as soldiers there desert by the thousands annually. No comments from the White House or the State Dept. have been received or are expected.

      • JeffH

Douglas, your comments sound so familiar. Old arguments that have been refuted time and time again.

More laws, more regulation, more restrictions. That’s the government’s answer to crime, especially to any kind of crime dealing with firearms. Today, we have over 20,000 local, state and federal laws which cover every aspect of using, owning, carrying, buying, transporting, storing and possessing a firearm. Yet, with all these new laws, the majority of which have been created since 1968, we have had more and more ILLEGAL use of firearms than ever before. Despite all the laws and despite harsher penalties.

        Douglas:
        Huh? Whatcha been smokin’?

If guns are so easily “smuggled” over our north and south borders what does that say about border security, on both side? Therein lies the problem.

I don’t know about going north, but going south is a piece of cake. You just drive on down. My older sister and her husband have been nown near the border, on the south side, and have witnessed southbound traffic simply cruise across the border. Trucks, cars, vans, you name it.

The answer to crime in Canada and Mexico is to arm the citizens, not keep them disarmed. See the post above with the blogger’s questions and answers that he posted.

The point of the Second Ammendmant is to KEEP our citizens armed. This is to keep the government under control.

The first American Revolution actually began when the Crown began trying to disarm the colonists. That would have allowed the Crown to become even more tyrantical over the colonies.

The more afraid our gonvernment is of We the People, the better.

Registering shot guns and rifles in rual areas to facilitate police in finding stolen guns? I somehow do not think the criminals are going to go have the police check their stolen guns.

The only thing registration accomplishes is to help the police and government know where to go to confiscate them from honest citizens when the time comes.

Vermont has virtually no gun regulations, and they have one of the lowest ccrime rates in the country.

The only thing you stated that made any sense was the need for more training in the use and handling of firearms. We all need to be dead shots, and under all circunstances.

      • JC

Douglas Smyth, I can tell you of all the legitimate firearms for sale in Canada, about 40% come from the States. The majority of hand gund sold here are Sigs.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Gee, you dont supposed that maybe a lot of them, are maybe, stolen? Oh yeah, more than half the guns they take off criminals, are stolen guns. People and gangs and groups steal tons of them, sell them across the border, and they make their way back here. Im glad that law abiding citizens are allowed to carry guys here. Because if they didnt, all you wankers crying for gun control, more than likely would be having your house broken into this week. You see, if the criminals know, that the law abiding working citizen cant have them, your house is easy pickings for them. All they have to do is come in, and they have a gun, and know you dont. Well, you do the math. Its pretty simple to see what would happen. Pretty darn simple.

What Canadians and Americans are bothe guilty of is stereotyping each other. Neither side seems to recognize that the other is as “regional” in its politics and religion as the other.
In other words, Alaskans aint at all like New Yorkers any more than Torontonians are like Albertans. So we are all guilty of using one big brush to paint an entire country the same color…and that just isn`t accurate.

You make some good points also, but Ive never seen our Police here enforce socialism. Many in this happen to be friends of mine, and they dont force anything on anyone. I fully support our local police force. Its our politicians I dont trust, and the guys I know in law enforcement, they dont believe as the politicians do either. The two are as different as night and day, and are not connected. Maybe they are in big cities like LA and Chicago, and that is scary. But at least not here. Not yet.

The more of the restricting gun laws the more easily for the criminals. If you prohibit any guns, no criminals will turn theirs. That is clear to any politician, police and even to brainwashed citizens pushing this prohibition. So government brass trying to destroy second amendment does not care about the guns in the hands of criminals. After all it is very small percentage of the general population. Any totalitarian country has the strict prohibition of any kind of weapons in general population. Hefty fines, years in jail and in some countries even death sentence for having illegal gun. But each of those countries has strong police forces (in what use to be Czechoslovakia one in ten citizens was reporting to secret police) and military. That force could and was used against any upheaval, demonstrations, making impossible for any political changes in the country. Government was always appointed by communist party and elections were the show for the free world. It was obligation to go to put the ballot in. No matter what paper you drop in under party watch, it was always counted as vote plus. If you did not vote you could feel the party arm, loosing the job, kids not admitted to higher education school…But since you refused to vote, you were branded as the antisocial element and you were taken out of the election list. So in communist countries the elections were always 100%, of course that could not be swallowed even by most communist loving countries of the free world. You could check statistics. It was always announced over 90%. Absurdity of elections like that is best demonstrated on one example. The toilet papers were folded leafs, not rolls like we know now. They were 200 leafs in the pack. Somebody managed to get this pack in the ballot box. It created problem, since there were more votes than voters. They had to look for the polling station with missing votes.
Dictatorial government fear the own people. That is the only reason for any prohibition and the gun registry. Period.

      So…a couple things:

First off, Old John Myers stated by quoting William Burroughs. Yes, the very same William Burroughs who SHOT HIS OWN WIFE.

      That seems a little odd.

Second, he talks about his life in Canada, in the city of Calgary…which has the population of 1 million or so. Then he talks about a gang-related killing, where an innocent bystander was also shot.

That is horrible that innocent people get gunned down, but gang-related killings, where innocents get killed in the crossfire, are nowhere near the same thing as a LEGAL GUN OWNER GOING OUT OF THEIR WAY TO SLAY INNOCENTS EN MASSE.

Also, Canada’s homicide rate (per 100,000 people) is about 1/5th of that of America’s.

Also, again, if the Calgary gun crime is mostly gang-related, then that might be no different than the old Italian mafia days in cities like Chicago, I would imagine. Except that in Canada, only the gangs have guns, whereas in many parts of America, just about everybody has guns…on them…all the time.

And yet, there’s that whole homicide rate statistic that tells us that the concealed carry argument that it actually makes the country safer, seems to have been proven as just more false propaganda…to serve the NRA, I would guess.

Do you Liberals ever step back and say to yourselves “Nobody is going to believe this”, or have you become so emboldened with your lies that you think you say anything and your audience will believe you?

“just about everybody has guns…on them…all the time”?
Where do you get this kind of BS? I don’t know, but thank you for exposing yourself as a blatant misinformer. Now go back to the Liberal websites where conjecture passes as fact.

Dave, Dogna-Fed is as always demonstrating just how completely twisted his mind really is.

What he simply won’t face straight on is our natural and law given RIGHT to defend ourselves from criminals and other aggressors.
Nope! DF feels that we can magically eradicate all guns and no one will ever have another evil thought and that we will all join hands and dance gaily in circles singing Kumbaya The Government is our Saviour…in other words, he is completely insane.

You avoid the truth totally on your post. In reality, if you ban guns, you know darn well the criminal would not turn his in. And crime would skyrocket. Everyplace that has ever practiced gun control, has had their crime rates go up. Common sense pal. When bad guys have guns, and they will get guns always, and good people arent allowed to have them, well, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure things out here. So put away your left wing liberal agenda, and join the human race, smell the roses, and see reality. It really isnt that hard to figure out what would happen if guns were banned. Of course, then there is that other thing, the danger of only the government having guns. Now that is the scary part.

You’re wrong. There is also not a gun culture like there is in the U.S.

    • Average Joe Patriot

I’ve owned these deadly things for the better part of 40 years, wherever they were legal, currently have several in my possession. Love ‘em. Never once has one “gone off” on it’s own. I’ve owned dishwashers and toasters and cars and chainsaws and coffee grinders. None have “gone off” in over 60 years.

And in all the time I’ve owned these various dangerous things, none has hurt anyone. Yet.

But I can say that having a weapon has prevented me, and others, from getting hurt or killed on a number of occasions. This cannot be said for the toasters or chainsaws I’ve owned. No, those haven’t hurt anyone either, but they haven’t prevented it, either. That is not their function.

That is, however, the function of guns. To warn and protect.

I can also safely say that all the gun laws in the world would not have prevented me or others from being threatened with them in the hands of criminal idiots. This is true of guns or also any other handy useful weapon. A knife, a lead pipe, or a bicyle chain. Or a gun. However, in a self defense situation, which would you rather have? Pepper spray? Or a .357 magnum.

Once my wife and I were randomly attacked by an illegal leaping out of the backseat of a lowrider car with a screwdriver and I had to defend her with a can of corn on the sidewalk on our way home from the local groceria. When did this happen? Broad daylight, the day after I sold my guns, preparatory to our moving from Arizona to gun-free Massachusetts. Weird fate. No one ever attacked me (or us) when I carried openly during my years in Arizona. But one day after I voluntarily disarmed myself, we were attacked and had to defend my wife and myself with the contents of a bag of groceries.

Moral: If you’re moving to gun-free Massachusetts, buy canned vegetables. You’re allowed to carry them openly there and, clumsily but ferociously handled, they can be a formidable defense against an intended screwdriver midday wife-stabbing.

One day earlier and the fool would have had a gun muzzle up his nose, rather than a can of corn upside his head. And a more memorable experience would have been had by all.

Looking back on it, I think canned corn should be outlawed. I could’ve killed the guy. But, self-constraint got the better of me.

True story. More where that came from…from the streets where we live.

Corn kills, it is evident. It should be banned.
