Chamber Of Commerce Leader Supports Repeal Of Healthcare Law
January 14, 2011 by Personal Liberty News Desk
President Barack Obama's healthcare legislation has faced plenty of opposition since it passed last March. House Republicans, state courts and concerned Americans have made the argument that the controversial law should be repealed.
On Jan. 11, United States Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue joined the fight against Obamacare, saying that the bill should be overturned. During the annual State of American Business address at the lobbying group's Washington, D.C., headquarters, Donohue said that the healthcare law grants "extraordinary powers" to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to "redefine healthcare as we know it," according to The Huffington Post.
Donohue added that the law is not "totally workable," citing the hundreds of waivers granted by the HHS that allow certain businesses to bypass the bill's provisions.
"We see the upcoming House vote as an opportunity for everyone to take a fresh look at healthcare reform, and to replace unworkable approaches with more effective measures that will lower costs, expand access and improve quality," said Donohue, quoted by the news provider.
According to Politico.com, the House debate over healthcare repeal may be toned down this week in the wake of the Jan. 8 shooting in Arizona that killed six people and wounded 14, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.). Although the vote is expected to be delayed, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said that no act will stop lawmakers from fulfilling their duties as elected officials.
