Obama Visits Giffords, Delivers Speech At Tuscon Memorial

Obama visits Giffords, delivers speech at Tuscon memorialHours after President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, visited Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) at an Arizona hospital, the commander-in-chief delivered a speech on Jan. 12 at a memorial event in Tucson.

Obama reported that Giffords' husband, NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, said that the 40-year-old lawmaker opened her eyes shortly following the President's visit. It was the first time she had opened her eyes since the Jan. 8 shooting, which left six dead and 14 wounded.

The President also eulogized each victim who was killed, then cautioned Americans about the dangers of politicizing the tragedy. He indicated that the gunman alone — and no political movement — should be blamed for the shooting.

"At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized — at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do — it's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds," said Obama, quoted by CNN.

Obama's speech has been praised by members of both political parties. For example, Rich Lowry of the conservative magazine National Review said that the President "recaptured some of the tone of his famous 2004 convention speech." Lowry said that Obama rose above the liberal finger-pointing by asking for civility in the wake of tragedy.

    I find it interesting that when President Obama gives a very good/healing national speech by all accounts, even conservative commentators, the story on this web site appears on the front page late the following day and is pushed off the front page very quickly.

      I got the feeling the page changes every weekday? But if you feel the need to make an issue where one doesn’t exist…..

        My recollection is that most, if not all stories appear on the front page early in the morning and most are moved along when new ones appear the next day. Some even stay on the front page with the new ones for awhile. I guess they just didn’t want to let too many people see a story about the comforting speech our President made…not popular with the haters on the site.

      Dear Doc Sarvis,

      You find demons where none exist. We update the news items at least daily on our site. New stories go in at the top and push older stories down the list. Sometimes there is breaking news. When stories hit that need to be published immediately they go at the top and it cycles the list down. The older stories drop off. There is only so much room on the page. You should know by now that we don’t try to “hide” any news. In fact, the story you mention can be accessed from the right of the page under “Featured News.”

        Thanks, Bob. And, now that ‘certain’ people have been told what they need to know, I’m wondering if ‘certain’ people can find their way to the Featured News section, read the relevant info, extract their fuzzy heads from where the sun shineth not and perhaps have at least one foot in the real world. It would be such a refreshing change.

    It’s comforting to have a prez who exudes compassion. It’s beyond mere words to know that he’d never stoop to surrendering to the dangers of politicizing a tragedy. It’s swell to know that this prez doesn’t have a dishonest bone in his body and would never take advantage of anyone.
    It makes both my legs tingle to know that this prez is ten times more intelligent than Einstein and all of the Founding Fathers combined. This may come as a shock to some , especially since my responses are usually viewed as hardcore conservative.
    Now that I’ve seen ‘the light’ (and my experimental, cosmic prozac works even better than expected), I will be permitted to become one of the truly illuminated beings in America.
    Life is beautiful when you finally understand Mr. Obama’s real message. I’d gladly spell it out for you, but now that I am about to ascend to the heights of mortal knowledge, I’d have to give up my secret decoder ring and my pills if I revealed that wisdom from beyond the stars.
    My only complaint is with the maker of the container that safeguards my multidimensional wisdom. I need to take another pill, but I can’t get the lid off the invisible container. If only I could share this wonder with all of you lesser mortals.
    ET is supposed to call and congratulate me, and take me on an extended vacation to his home planet. Yes, I’ll keep in touch. Be safe. Be civil (and please don’t tell anyone that I’m joining a select group of advanced supermortals from far, far away).

    I didn’t even notice the T-shirts until today on the news,The message I got was for the people of Tuscon and the USA to unite as one and hold each other together in this time of tragedy and nothing political as you suggest.

    President Obama delivered a heartfelt speach. A difficult setting to speak in, our President did a very good job in paying tribute to those who died, offering support for those still recovering, paying tribute to those who stepped up to help in the crisis, and challenging us to be an even better country.

        I didn’t get to see all of Obama’s speech but a lot of people have praised it. And what I heard I liked. I haven’t watched TV since so did not know about the t-shirts. If this occurred, then shame, shame on those people that wore them.
