More Foolish Anti-Gun Legislation

One of the most foolish proposals being made in the wake of the shooting of 20 people in Tucson, Ariz., which killed six including a Federal judge, is one made by Representative Peter King (R-N.Y.). He plans to introduce legislation that would make it a crime to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official.

There is no reason for such a law except to put more restrictions on gun ownership in an effort to slowly legislate them out of existence.

Such a law surely would have made no difference in the Tucson shooting. If someone is so unbalanced that they would think shooting a government official is the way to achieve some goal, they are not going to pause and think about the consequences of breaking King’s proposed law.

King, who the National Rifle Association has graded a “D” on gun rights, is joined by anti-gun nut Michael Bloomberg, New York’s mayor.

Quoting Cesare Beccaria from his work Of Crime and Punishments, Thomas Jefferson once said, “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”

A knee-jerk reaction to the actions of a mentally deranged young man is no reason to forget this.

    Guns, Match’s, Baseball bats, vehicles and knives. These things do not kill unless a person uses them intentionally or accidentally. If I have a book of matchs that does not make me want to be a arsonist anymore than feeling I need a gun to protect my inocent family makes me want to actually have to kill someone in self defence.
    I have a schizophrenic son. As a child I could not get him diagnosed because the government dose not want children labeled, so he suffered to adulthood after being diagnosed with the old standby ADHD and given medication for it. this made him worse because this medication will make a schizphrenic progress and become sicker. Then as an adult child, 18, they told me that they could not help him until he got arrested or hurt someone. He was never violent so we had to wait until he had a total psychotic breakdown and almost had to be locked up for the rest of his life before we finally knew what was wrong with him. With loving care, structure and a stable home we brought him back from insanity, now on the right medication. My mother a retired Psychiatric Nurse said the problem our Society is facing is that we do not have the Mental Hospitals we once had for the truley ill. They need a safe, secure, structered setting. They cannot take care of them selves. The don’t get their prescription filled, they don’t remember to take their pills, they get on drugs to self medicate. It used to take 2 or 3 concerned family members or resonable people to report to the authoritie that someone needed help. They would take them in and evaluate them. If this had been still the way in this country. We would have paid to help this man in Arizona, not spent the money on a trial to defend him and have to live with the knowledge that our society let him down and we all pass those homeless people, they are the mentally ill we do not care for. These people would never have been murdered if the college could have asked the authories to pick him up for mental help. Please write your congressmen about re-enacting mental health guildlines that listen to those who see these people everyday that need help. Thank You.

      Donna, I am sorry you had to endure this. Yet, it is truly kind of you to post your story to make it clear that it’s not easy to get help in this kind of situation until something goes terribly wrong. I don’t think most people understand the situation but your words should make it clearer.

    Yup the old ” blame the gun for killing people “. I heard a story about a small village in Africa, the tribe members did not have any money and there were not any guns around. Well there was a lot of political unrest as most of us have read about in that area. Killings and chopping off of arms and legs and many other atrocists acts. So the tribe had been told about a special technique that would mame and disable their attackers. So to get even they were told by a medical expert, that if one were to stick a large steel rod, needle, or knife into a very specific spot on someone’s lower back, they would become totally disabled and be bedridden in a hospital for the rest of their life. So the fact is, it’s not the gun… it’s person pulling the trigger! Furthermore, do you remember the lady that drowned 4 or 5 kids in a bathtub? I think we should ban bathtubs then!

    I saw an article on this proposed law this morning – and it said “federal official”. He wasn’t even going to include the state or local politicians. Only the federal ones deserved protection.

      Government officials are fairly easy to recognise. They are the ones who either take your money or freedom against your will or are talking about devising more ways to take your money or freedom against your will.

      The most easiest to recognise are those the try to explain, while they are taking your money or freedom, how it is good for you to have your money and freedom taken against your will and especially how good it is to have your money go to someone else of their choosing (less what they keep for themselves).

    This proposal does spark an interesting idea for a slightly different law.

    It should be illegal for any government official to be within 1000 feet of a gun.

    The penalty, well, there’s already a gun handy — just kidding (about the penalty).

    We lived in East Africa for a while, where guns are completely outlawed by the citizens, and as a result crimes are committed daily against them, with guns, since the criminals are the only ones with the guns!! Rediculous!!

    Aside from the doubtful Constitutionality of this, it would be ineffective. I was trained in the USMC, & have successfully snipped at 1000 METERS. Over 3 times the distance. I am certain there are many others with greater skill. All this would accomplish is to prevent Joe Citizen from helping to protect the innocent. Also, it would load the courts with folks who enter that 1000 ft. zone totally unaware that some official that he neither knows or cares about is there. One could be on their way to a skeet range, driving by a meeting he knows nothing about, with a legal shotgun in the car and get jail time.

        I read an actual breakdown of stats once that showed you were 8 or 9 times more likely to be killed by a Doctor than a gun in the US.

      If they pass this law, I think it should include something that MANDATES all those government officials wear a GPS tracker at ALL times with real-time data displayed on something like Google maps so all of those who would obey the laws of the land can know when and where we can carry guns. It would be the only reasonable way for us to make sure we were 1,000 feet away from any government official.

      Of course, the downsides to such a tracking system:

      1. Anyone who really wished to do the harm would know where they are at every minute of the day.

      2. It would be impossible for them to have secret meetings because their positions would be known at all times.

      3. And of course, that little indiscretion while their spouse was away would be easily discovered and proven….

      So I can easily understand why they would want to pass the law without giving us a reasonable means to obey the law.

But a law mandating stricter background checks for mental illness may have stopped the Tucson shooter. He was rejected by the military when he applied. Perhaps better background checks with longer waiting periods may have prevented the shooter from getting a gun in the first place.

      Since he hadn’t even been evaluated mentally at all because no one picked up on his problem, he would not have been on the radar screen and he no doubt would have had the gun anyway. Mostly, his parents and the school that he was kicked out of should have realized that something was wrong with him and taken appropriate action.

      Foolish laws are made by foolish people, and Peter King is among the most foolish of the bunch of idiots that reside in the Congress. As I remember, he is the one that was accusing the Minutemen of America of shooting people for sport in a town hall meeting last summer when he was asked about boarder control. He is an idiot, and the type most likely to propose such stupid laws that they can’t enforce. He needs to be voted out of office in 2012, and should be targeted as such.

      if this had happened at a republican rally, there would be no need for the nut job to have a trial. he’d have been hit by so many bullets, his mama might not have recognized him. they want to blame the media, palin, his parents – my question is – where the heck were the police? isn’t it customary to have lots of cops at rallies? the sheriff is to blame if anybody is besides the nut behind the gun. but the sheriff was pointing his finger at everybody else.

      Vicki, if you have relatives or friends living in New York, you might ask them if King is on their RINO list. King sounds like a 5 year old brat who’s trying to impress the rest of his grade school class by confusing Peter Pan ‘feelings’ with the adult world.
