Report: Awareness Of Heart Disease Risk Factors Remains Important

New research has emerged that may cause some people to think twice before indulging in foods high in saturated or trans fats.
The American Heart Association released a new report titled Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics – 2011 Update, which states that between the years 1997 and 2007 there was a 27 percent increase in the number of inpatient cardiovascular operations and procedures.
Along with that stat, the report added that the estimated cost of heart disease and stroke in 2007 was $286 billion.
Veronique L. Roger, M.D., the lead writer of the report, said the research suggested keeping tabs on "risk factors" surrounding the disease and that people had "not won the war against heart disease and stroke."
The idea of making lifestyle changes to decrease a person's risk has been a popular theme this year, with First Lady Michelle Obama's crusade against childhood obesity and UK chef Jamie Oliver's reality show that focused on helping American families eat healthier.
Consuming fruits and vegetables is one way people can avoid developing heart disease. And with the holiday season in full swing, it may mean opting for the broccoli and saying no to the fries.
