Murkowski Camp Celebrates Victory In Alaska Senate Race

More than two weeks after votes were cast in the midterm elections, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has declared that she was re-elected to another term in Congress.
Murkowski, who is the first write-in candidate to win a Senate election since 1954, declared victory over Tea Party candidate Joe Miller, who had defeated Murkowski in the Republican primary in August. Hours before her victory speech, The Associated Press declared Murkowski the winner with about 700 votes left to count.
"Alaskans have spoken, and they've written it out, as well. It's pretty historic," said Murkowski, quoted by CBS News.
As of Nov. 18, Miller had yet to concede the race. According to the Anchorage Daily News, Miller called Alaska's voting system "suspect" and pledged to make sure the vote-counting process was fair.
Murkowski's victory came in the home state of Tea Party unofficial leader Sarah Palin, who is considering a run for president in 2012 and backed Miller's Senate campaign. Earlier this week, Murkowski said that Palin does not have the leadership qualities needed to become president, according to media reports.
The incumbent added that she believes Palin did not enjoy "[getting] down into the policy" while she was the governor of Alaska.
