Pre-election survey shows overwhelming majority of Americans believe country is in bad shapeA new national poll reveals that the number of Americans who feel that things are going in the wrong direction in the United States is the highest pre-election result since the survey was created more than three decades ago.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, which was released before the midterm elections, found that 75 percent of those respondents said that things are going badly in the U.S., while 78 percent believe that things are going well in their own personal lives.

The economy is the top issue facing the country, according to 52 percent of those surveyed. A majority said that unemployment is the biggest factor affecting the economy.

"Even in 1994, when the Republicans last took control, and in 2006, when control flipped back to the Democrats, roughly half the public was satisfied with the state of the nation," said CNN polling director Keating Holland.

Despite three-fourths of the country feeling unsatisfied with the state of the nation, approximately 55 percent said that things will be going well in the U.S. a year from now.

According to a recent Gallup poll found that President Barack Obama has the lowest approval rating since he took office. Approximately 45 percent of those surveyed believe that Obama isn't doing a good job, according to the U.S. News and World Report
