Poll: Support for gay rights on the rise in AmericaAt a crucial moment in the history of same-sex civil rights in America — when issues such as gay marriage and military service of openly gay people are being debated in Congress and fought over in courts — it appears that the tide of public opinion on the issue may be shifting. 

A poll conducted by Pew Research Center has shown that the percentage of Americans who support the right for homosexual couples to be able to marry is increasing, though it is still smaller than the percentage of those who oppose it.

Specifically, a total of 42 percent favor same-sex marriage while 48 percent are against it. However, in 2009 the ratio was 37 to 54 percent, respectively.

Moreover, "the shift in opinion on same-sex marriage has been broad-based, occurring across many demographic, political and religious groups," the commentary accompanying the survey, which was published on the center's website, specified.

The results come on the heels of a controversy surrounding statements made at a meeting of leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), or Mormons, earlier this month.

According to media reports, LDS Church apostle Boyd K. Packer said that legalizing gay marriage would sanction immorality. He also suggested that same-sex orientation can be changed through the power of faith.

    The word marriage was defined over 2000 years ago to mean a union of man and woman for the purpose of procreation and raising the children. it is now a legal term now with that same definition.

    There is nothing currently in law to prevent a new contract being defined that would grant or impose the same requirements upon a couple composed of two men or of two women the same rights and restrictions. The problem is with the theft of the word and changing the definition.

    This theft is an insult to all heterosexual couples who are married.

    So all that is necessary is for the homosexuals to create a new word and stop trying to gain the respectability of marriage in a union that is NOT marriage. That could easily stop the controversy.

    Of course if controversy is what is the object of this affront, then it will never stop.

    The reason more people are comfortable with gay marrige and openly gay military is our gov’t run education system is teaching our kids that it’s okay to be a gay. there are more and more shows about queers on tv.

    In my humble opinion, I think most of us are off track here. I got it, this issue has very strong religious implications. But, is this not more of a legal issue? I would suggest that the govt should get out of the marriage business altogether. Do I really need a govt record of my marriage? The fact is that govt is involved with marriage to make money. Filing fees, taxes, etc. are just the beginning of how your govt officials cash in on marriage. And, as marriage is a “sacred” institution, then let it be held in a sacred place. Marriage and divorce are issues for your beliefs to decide.

    If there were no legal “benefits” to being married, then there would be no argument.

    The Pew poll is worthless,why? its a poll devoted to the leftwing overthrow of this nation,as far as this gay agenda,its a private matter and should be put back in the closet,for it has no bussiness in the public arena,why? because in fact 95% of the population in this nation are not of the same mentality,they are family people,and feel that this gay agenda is putting normal family values on the same level as those who think they are entitled to the same benefits as those who have families,i dont hate gays,but my logic tells me,protect my family from those who may corrupt,the values of this republic,for their own selfish ends,for this nation was built by family people for family people,i believe that this gay agenda is being pushed down americans throats on purpose as a matter of national urgency,by those who wish to totaly destroy this nations family values,and it seems its the greatess danger to the future of this republic,and the folks pushing this agenda are greatly out numbered,what better way to push this lie than to print a lie,that this nation is for it,the boys and girls in washington,must love it,the more fire the more smoke,to hide behind,its a trojan horse,a pandoras box,we shouldnt be opening.as far as gays,live in your life styles privately,for its not a public matter.

    I dont’ have a problem with civil unions. After all, that is basically between the couple and the government. But I have a LOT of trouble with gay marriages in church considering what is written in the Bible.

    The gays aren’t really pushing for equal rights with married couples. They want to force the various religions to change their laws about gays. One, the other day, told me that the Bible was written by humans who changed God’s word to reflect their own prejudices and therefore could be changed without trouble. I’m not sure where he got that idea – but I certainly disagree with it. As far as I’m concerned, God set the laws and I’m not going to be the one to say God was wrong.

    Personally, I feel sorry for anyone whose identity/sense of self is tied directly to sexual attraction/behavior. This, apparently, overwhelming “addiction” that controls gays and others to the point that they can see nothing else is truly sad.
    The hatred and bigotry to those who disagree and to ex-gays just proves that they(activists,I don’t mean to imply all gays) are willing to do anything for acceptance. That is probably the saddest part of it all.

    I’ll offer this up…. again. Marriage is a “rite” (a religious ceremony, a celebration) and not a “right” (Constitutional guarantee). For those of you which “separation of church and state” is the “hill you’re going to die on” the church has had purview over marriage long before the state. So, is that “separation thing” a one-way street prohibiting religion from input/autonomy while the government mandates whom the church must marry regardless of their teachings?? Unless you’re a total Commie/Marxist, you must conclude the state has no business “marrying” anyone (heteros or gays) and civil unions (partnership, contractual betrothal etc) should be the end of it. The loudest tell us civil unions are discriminatory and “you have to call us married”. We have to call them “married” for the sole purpose of stroking their fragile egos and giving weirdos with faulty wiring the illusion of main-stream acceptance. Little secret… you’re not main-stream and if you get in our face, you won’t be accepted.

    I suspect (but I don’t know) the majority of the respondants are for the equal benefits, percs, etc. granted to married couples extended to all committed domestic-partners and that’s as American as it gets. I think most altruists feel this way. However, until the gay community (good luck with reading around that sodomy thing) can establish their own church (St. Lady Gaga?? The Holy Sepulcher of the Big Brown Eye??) and perform marriage “rites”, civil unions MUST be the extent to which the Constitution allows.

      First of separation of church and state was created by an activist judge and has nothing to with original principles upon which this nation is based. Actually it is the anti-establishment clause.

      I have been educating people on the rite vs right issue for many years. If the state (government) can license a rite they can define a rite which means the state can and does regulate religion. Which is the right are granted by our creator only the creator may define them, government just became god.

      In fact if you read the history of the marriage license issue it was passed as a form of religious persecution against the Mormons (The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints). Hidden in the legislation you will also find the first passage of the nationalization of local (not yet public)school curriculum.

      The government has no authority to license or define a religious rite. Thus the definition of marriage is outside the authority of the government. No exceptions.

        Someone once told me that there is a short form marriage license and a long form. You see and sign the short form but it mandates that you are accepting the long form – which is a contract with the government. It mandates that you will pay all taxes or you will give up your children to the government. There are some other mandates in it as well.

        I don’t know if this is true or not. Does anyone else know??

    Many conservatives think that homosexuality is an “abomination”,just because an ancient book of myths,legends,and fairy tales tells them so. But the Bible also says that eating shellfish of any kind is an abomination,as well as wearing clothes with two kinds of fabric on them,and that parents should kill their children if they are disobedient.
    Gosh. If any of you Godly religious folk here enjoy eating lobster,shrimp,oysters and crab,you’re guilty of an abomination and you’re doomed to eternal hellfire.Yikes! And I guess you’d better start killing your kids if they ever sass you.And how are you going to do it? Will it be by public stoning? Or possibly by more modern methods such as by shooting squad since we live in more modern times and they didn’t have guns back in Biblical times.
    It’s unbelievable that there are still people in the supposedly enlightened 21st century who still think that homosexuals are a threat to society and that we must take measures to “fight” them.
    Some folks are really behind the times.

So how are you different than the the other extreme?? The truth is you are no different. You are unwilling to co-exist in the social contract that has allowed you to flourish. This is why we should not allow those who do not support the social contract repleat with all of the documents to remain in the society.

      It has more to do with the homosexual community’s effort to harm this society than anything else. Most of the people who are now defending this society would have never taken up the issue if they were not forced to. You have made it clear you are not only a threat to this society, but to anyone who believes in God or the Bible.

      So why shouldn’t we feel the necessity to defend ourselves and the right to choose our own beliefs and opinions????

        The Bible does not tell anyone to go out and kill gays. Yet over the centuries thousands of gays have been killed in God’s name. It would have been difficult for gays to have a voice if societies are constantly targeting them. We still have societies who want to suppress them and “keep them in the closet”.Let’s get past that.

      I do not wish to get into a scripture battle, but your attempt to ignore the issue ignores the responsibility to uphold the principles and thus denies God (see Jude 1:3-4 you may wish to read on). You may also want to look at Epistle of John 7: 24. We must stand for right or we allow evil to do so is to commit a sin of omission. Where we can prevent the commission of evil we must.

      Where we would be required to uphold the evil act as a matter of law we cannot. Thus to pass any law that requires any person to violate his or her faith is to regulate religion. This we cannot do. To regulate any faith violates the anti-establishment clause of the constitution.

      I don’t know what Bible you are quoting but John 3:16 doesn’t say a word about judging others. It says, (and I quote from memory) “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son that whosoever believith in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” No a word about judgement. It is Jesus who said, “Your sins are forgiven. Go and sin no more.”

      Your problem is that you want Jesus to forgive your sins (He will) but then want to continue sinning. That doesn’t get you forgiveness. At least in my Bible, it doesn’t.

    As to Mike’s comment in general the idea that people wish to “harm” the gay community is an issue of real concern. The gay community is attempting to over throw the standards upon which this nation is founded. This is not harm but self defense. If you do not wish to be harm do not put others in jeopardy. It was not the heterosexual community that began this issue nor sought high offices to impose their views upon the gay community. It was in the nature of this society at inception that we support. If you don’t like this society you are as free as anyone to leave this society and join another or build a society of your own. Here lies the another issue. If homosexuals were simply out to support their own views they would form their own society somewhere. They have the resources. The problem is they would not have the some benefits or protections as we enjoy and there would be no large populace from which to glean converts. Prove me wrong form your own society and prosper by the fruits of your own labors not my labors.

      I think the real problem is that the gays consider a non-action by the rest of us in their search for “gay rights” to be an attack on them. If we ignore them it is as bad as an actual attack on them. And like most people who believe they are special in some way (none are) they don’t want to be ignored.       As to my comments I not only want them to read them, I want them to espouse them. There is no hate in anything I said and for you to characterize my comments with such a broad brush is simply an effort to diminish that efficacy of the comments because you do not wish to agree.

      While there are people who are purveyors of hate on both sides of the debate this is neither cause nor justification to ignore any opinion on the subject. That is of course if you wish to learn. If you are intransigent, unwilling to change in opinion, thought, or deed, then the cry of hate speech or hatred is as good a thing to hide behind as anything. But it you who is hiding not those who openly state their views.

        If a hetero is beat up by a gay is it a hate crime?? If I go out and beat up a gay it’s a hate crime, especially if I mention the word gay or f.g. Even if I don’t know the guy is gay and I call him a f.g it’s automatically a hate crime! If a black hetero beats a gay and calls him a f.g it’s automatically a hate crime, but if a white gay beats a black and calls him the n word, it’s not automatically a hate crime! If it’s a mutual fight then there is no hate crime,so no case.     The poll means nothing, anyone with a brain would know that if a poll was taken in Germany at the right time there would have been overwhelming support for killing those of Jewish faith. A corrupt society will produce corrupt polls.

    The homosexual agenda is all about over throwing the standards of our society so that those who do not want to live by the standards that made this Nation great can parasitically feed upon the benefits created by our forefathers. Yes I said “parasite.” Anyone who is unwilling to live by the original social contract complete with all the documents is injurious to the society.

    Civil rights only belong to those who are willing to support the social contract, laws, and founding documents that made this nation great. It is true that all men are created equal but this is only true in a society if the one in question is willing to take upon them the responsibility and duty to maintain the society by this they may claim those equal rights by their own actions.

    The homosexuals want to destroy the very fabric of the society that has allowed them to flourish. To take from those of us who still hold to the standards of our forefathers. Yes there were gays back then too but they lived by the same rules, sometimes to their immediate detriment, but to their long term survival.

    Today homosexuals want to claim to be equal, but they are not, they are slaves to their own lusts and greeds. This is true of many heterosexuals as well. But as a group the homosexuals are governed by their own bodies and not their intellects. No matter how well framed the argument is a homosexual may only reproduce by conversion and there lies the issue either they convert or alter the natural condition of the human to produce offspring that have been genetically or chemically beastialized, in other words make all people like themselves.

    We can not free a man who makes himself a slave by his own actions. He will only do it again and this time he may take you with him. Love him, teach him, and if he ever does choose to take up freedom support him, but never take anyone into your home or society that is unwilling to live by your rules or they will destroy your security and sanctity of life.

      Well said. “It is true that all men are created equal …” This is true. BUT … it does NOT go on to say all men REMAIN equal. Their own choices is what governs whether a person is the equal, the superior, or the sub of others. This whole arguement is about that level. The gays insist that they are the superior ones – and then gets upset if the rest of us ignore them.

    The first command God gave to us humans was to be fruitful and multiply(ala Genesis 1:28), having equipped men with sperm and women with ovum which only have relevance in a sexual relationship with the opposite sex. To be oriented towards the same sex is contrary to how God created us. In Jude, verse 7, we learn why God “nuked” Sodom which is meant to be a warning to us, but I am afraid our nation will soon be destroyed because of our increasing wickedness.

I would define good as being those who live all the truth that they have. Some do not have enough truth to be righteous but can be “good.”

Either you accept everyone as an equal human being or American, or it’s all meaningless. We all want protected rights under the Constitution so that shouldn’t even be an issue. Most Americans don’t even choose to go into the military so gays may be far more patriotic than you give them credit for.

        I have absolutely no problem with gays who have sex. I do have a problem when they insist I have to join. When someone tries to insist that I MUST join whatever it is that they want, then they are getting into MY rights instead of remaining in theirs.

        I’ve seen reports that most gays have up to and sometimes over a thousand lovers during the life – to the average hetrosexual having three partners. I’ve always suspected the reason is that the more they have gay sex the more they are missing something they can’t identify – and they change partners frequently to try to find that missing something. While hetrosexuals have found that and have no reason to keep searching.

      You are right about Islam being the gays’ worst nightmare. I read an article about some Saudi prince in England this morning who beat his servant to death. He is gay – and it is a manditory death sentence in Islam to be gay. He can’t flee England in a hope of escape from the murder charge.

      In fact the English paper I read stated that he would be forced to serve his sentence and then the English would be forced to give him asylum to keep him from being killed.

        We had gays in the unit when I was in Vietnam. No one really cared … until the day the gay sergeant and his lover were seperated in battle.

        The sergeant then ordered his men to take risks that weren’t called for to end the fight fast so he could find his lover to make sure he was safe. No one was injured or killed but it was only luck. The captain sent the sergeant out that evening to the rear with orders to get rid of him … simply to keep him alive. The other was sent a few days later.

        NO ONE wanted to be around a person who would risk others simply to make sure his sex partner was okay.

        And that is the reason I understand that the Israeli army no longer has women serving in the lines with the men. They had similar problems.

        Good grief Joe do you think I’m sitting around waiting for you to snap your fingers and I’ll come running! I never said his DC gathering was staged but his TV show certainly is. Now that you brought it up maybe that was staged to. All D.C. demonstrations are staged or planned in advance so thanks for setting that straight.

        Robin that is your opinion, it is not the opinion of all, okay? Some people are different, get over it. Just get over it, there are things you cannot change. You could kill them all and they would just pop up again and again. Do not dwell on what you cannot change or understand.

        Some people claim to have changed their life style, they were bi-sexual, not all gay people are bi-sexual.

        So much time is wasted this way and for what? You don’t change anything, you just spread hatefulness and that is against the teachings of Christ also, that makes you a sinner. Not everyone is the same, get over it. You are not hurt in any way by the Man next door loving another Man. You are spinning your wheels. GET OVER IT.

        I understand your feeling of discomfort over something that seems strange and foreign to you, but your discomfort IS your problem.

        I really don’t care what a person does in the privacy of their own home, but I do care that they try to make everyone say its ok, and that you have this country’s blessing.
        I am a Christian and I certainly don’t have everyones blessing. With so many people now living together or as Dr. Laura calls it ‘shacking up’, whats the problem? They don’t have to have gov’t sanctions to see their loved one in a hospital, etc, there are legal ways of giving each other these rights. Go to a lawyer or go to one of the .coms to get the paperwork. This should be a given for anyone living together, not just gays.
        Now almost all insurance can go for your partner too, even though there are many married folks who have their own seperate insurance.

        You are right man next door loving another man wouldn’t be “my business” IF: ‘their rights’ were not Intruding into our Public lives, schools, churches, politics, home lives, influence forced upon our children and us adults to accept something that is abnormal, un-natural, and against the Natural laws of marriage, and Gods’ Laws. Besides a ‘man living next door loving a man’, (2 couples live within 3 different houses next to me), and calling each other ‘sweetie’, Is JUST GROSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        You apparently have not had much exposure to gay people through your life. Your saying it’s “gross” sounds like a child talking about kissing anybody. Are you saying they should just stay in the “closet?” The more exposure and factual information disseminated, the more acceptable they will be in society; and what’s wrong with that? They are God’s children too! And you can’t tell me that educating children about homosexuality is gonna turn anybody into a gay or lesbian. Most of the homosexual people I have known knew they were gay from an early age. They didn’t suddenly turn gay because they just thought it would be fun.

        Robin, I agree completely! Gods Word is True and Holy! All these things taking place are signs that mean it’s getting closer and closer to the return of our Lord, Jesus Christ! I feel bad for these people, too, as they will meet God, on the day of Judgement. That is the day Jesus will say “I don’t know you!” We have to be ready…. are you!?

        You are so lost in Christian Propaganda. The Bible is a great book, written by men who were probably inspired to write, as most writers are. There is much to be learned in other interpretations of the Bible, which, I’m sure, you are even afraid to investigate. What about the gnostic gospels? why were they excluded from the Bible? Because they gave people too much individual power, which took influence away from the church.

        Robin from Arcadia, I agree, I was not polled, nor were any of my friends that I’m aware of. I have an issue tho with Christians and people who are not homosexual,perverting a good word, to describe a life’style that is anything but “gay”, it’s deadly. Men in the pulpit used to be bold in speaking out against it, until they were silenced with threats of losing their “tax exemption”. They can take a thousand polls, but only one will be valid in the end, where God calls homosexuality, an ABOMINATION. Jesus said- Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

        Robin, the thing you seem to be forgetting is that not all of us believe in your God or in your religious dogma. MY God is not a hatemonger. MY God did not create a group of people to be different, only to punish them for their differences. MY God is an entity of pure, divine love for all people. And, frankly, I don’t care one whit what you or your religion have to say about it, or about gays or lesbians. Your religion and your God are fiction to me. And our government was founded on the principle that all religions are welcome in this country and that no one religion will ever hold sway over the masses. I don’t impose my religious beliefs on others, though I hold them very dear to my heart. How dare you or any of the loudmouth ultra-conservative Bible-thumpers try to force your narrow religious and moral views on the entire country? That is about the most un-American thing you could possibly do.
