Pro-immigration Reform Group Believes GOP's 'Pledge' Is Lacking

Pro-immigration reform group believes GOP's 'Pledge' is lackingA nonprofit organization recently criticized GOP House leaders for failing to address immigration reform in their "Pledge to America."

Federation for Immigration Reform (FAIR) expressed its concern that the issue was ignored in the 45-page document, which was written and released by Republicans last month. The pledge included a three-pronged approach to immigration reform: establishing operational control of American borders, working with state and local law enforcement to implement immigration laws and strengthening visa security.

FAIR said that the three points mentioned in the pledge were important, but the group believes that Republicans failed to include certain "vital ingredients" in their proposal.

"The 'Pledge to America' major themes are economic growth and jobs creation. If House Republican leadership is serious about that, then it cannot ignore the impact millions of illegal aliens have on jobs and wages or ignore the need to dry up the jobs magnet with more vigorous enforcement," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR.

According to KeenNewsService.com, Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced an immigration bill on Oct. 1. In a press release, Menendez said the bill addresses strengthening border security and requiring the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants to register with the government, pay their taxes and learn English.

    the immigration system isn’t broken. the politicians won’t apply the law in fear they will lose the hispanic vote, so in all actuality the hispanic population is blackmailing the politicians in order to keep their compatriots here. we need to force the illegals back across the border and then get our economy back on track, it’s obvious, the muslim in chief is in way over his head and the liberals have never fixed anything except the vote. if the economy worsens then you will eventually see the citizens force this issue to be taken care of.

    when people start using the word reform when it comes to illegal aliens, this should be a warning sign, they are pushing for the type of legislation that includes amnesty. yes, we do have the manpower to remove the illegals, it’s been done before and we can certainly do it now. why should we even consider giving citizenship to anyone who has defrauded our emigration laws. why hasn’t the government arrested nicki diaz in los angeles, the whole world has seen she broke the law by using a fraudulent social security card and is an illegal? why? these corrupt politicians are the ones causing the problem, jerry brown in california is just as bad as diaz, if he and gloria allred are using this episode against whitman, then they should also be held guilty for using a criminal for political gain.

    This is a hot topic with legit points on both sides. No solution is a fix all, but steps can be taken. We can increase border patrol and we can help assimilate those who are here (deporting them is not an opion, we simply don’t have the manpower to do it, not to mention the fact that our border would have to be 100% secure before we could even try!!) by making them learn english and pay for thier penalties. There are billions to be made from under the illegals sleeping pillows. Lets not forget, our parents and grandparents were able to bring thier culture here with them, and that made us stronger. Lets keep our minds open with acceptance not hatred or anger. Life is more important than dollars and cents. I am sure most of you would agree-(but never admit it and call me a Liberal moron instead :)

      Steve… Your post has merit, but the part I don’t get is how do illegal aliens pay penalties and where do they learn English? The majority of them are here for the handouts and it cost tax payers big bucks to educate children in the schools to learn English… I would be willing to bet that it would cost less to deport them and secure the borders than to let them stay. I don’t hate these people for wanting a better life, but at what cost, and I am not just meaning this in the dollars and cents way….

The House Republicans’ “Pledge to America,” unveiled with fanfare Thursday at a Sterling hardware store, mixes irresponsible tax cuts with implausible spending caps and unspecified actions to control entitlement spending. The resulting concoction is a profile in cowardice.
    “Our debt is now on track to exceed the size of our economy in the next two years,” their document notes. “The lack of a credible plan to pay this debt back causes anxiety among consumers and uncertainty for investors and employers.”
    Good points. Sadly, the “Pledge” contains no credible plan to reduce this debt. On the contrary, it would increase the debt by $4 trillion — yes, trillion — by extending all the expiring Bush tax cuts and adding new ones, including a poorly conceived deduction for small businesses. Talk about picking winners and losers; the tax code is already laden with special benefits for small business. This latest deduction would cost $25 billion over two years.
    The Republican plan promises dramatic spending cuts. It would roll back non-security discretionary spending to 2008 levels and cap future growth. But it shirks the politically sensitive task of explaining where the savings would come from. It tosses out a few, relatively small-dollar ideas — “cutting Congress’ budget” and “imposing a net hiring freeze on non-security federal employees,” saving $35 billion over 10 years — and then resorts to the old waste, fraud and abuse dodge. Minority Leader John Boehner crowed that the rollback would save $100 billion in the first year alone. Yes, but from where? Anyone can make that promise; tell us which NASA programs you will end, which national parks you will close. The proposal would require cuts of more than 20 percent in discretionary funding, the deepest in recent history. Leave aside the upside-down claim that cutting spending by this amount in the midst of an economic downturn would help create jobs. What, exactly, do Republicans propose to cut?
    The biggest dodge of all involves entitlement spending. The Republicans would repeal the Obama health-care plan, a plan that at least holds out the prospect of slowing the growth of health-care spending in general and Medicare in particular. An earlier proposal by Rep. Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) at least had the honesty to outline major, if unwise, changes in Medicare; he would turn it into a voucher program. By contrast, the “Pledge” vows grandly to “make the decisions that are necessary to protect our entitlement programs for today’s seniors and future generations. That means requiring a full accounting of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, setting benchmarks for these programs and reviewing them regularly, and preventing the expansion of unfunded liabilities.” Asked about this big fat asterisk, Mr. Boehner promised “an adult conversation.” When? What was this, the children’s hour?
    Democrats haven’t been any clearer about dealing with entitlement spending — the party’s hands-off Social Security caucus is growing ever louder — and their position on extending tax cuts looks good only in comparison to Republicans’ greater irresponsibility. But if this is the Republican case for taking control, the national debt can rest easy.

They was for deregulation and we see where it opened the doors to what would have been fraud in the past, brought this nation down, cut the taxes and spent the USA into a big hole. The one smart thing Bush did was to get the bank bailout going and too many thinks Obama was the one who did this. At least give Bush a one up on doing the smart move.       And they were roundly and soundly rebuffed by the Black Caucus, Barney Frank and the Banking Committee when they (on more than one occasion) raised the flag on the mismanagement at Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac. The toxic asset “derivatives” and resultant failure of the financial industry are squarely on the shoulders of the Dems, who believed in complete deregulation in that sector.

        Obama and ICE has audited 3,200 employers suspected of hiring illegals. Far more than previous administration. 225 of these companies or CEO’s had to pay a 50 million fine and totally disbarred from receiving government contracts. That is change you can believe in and the right direction to pursue.

    The Republican pleddge has everything in that all Americans want to see happen but not a single clue how they will do it.We all know they want to cut out benefits for veterans,senior citizens, the poor and want to impose a $700 billion dollar tax bill on the working class to give the millionaires a tax break.The really sad part is they are not even an American party anymore just a tool for Bahrain oil interests and large companies that are moving their jobs overseas.That is where the majority of their campaign funding is coming from.

    FAIR is an exalent organasation and provides a great service. My thought is who will pay for the English lessions and back ground checks. I have layed out a plan on my blog purple50.org on the pathway. However I do not agree with the path to citizenship, these people are illegal. Legal immagration must stop too, as the US takes in over 1 million people a year legaly, most uneducated and unskilled, and with a 9.6 unimployment its not logical.

    I haven’t read the pledge, but I see it as a way to garner votes, and from what I understand it lacks ‘meat’. If the issues the American public are dissatisfied with are not directly tackled, then it appears that this pledge is more of an appeasement than a pledge.

    I agree with SC that not all Republicans are Conservatives. I believe that the Conservatives would be more likely to address the issues head on, where the Republicans are more compromising. And the liberals only want what will push their agenda, regardless of the results. In their case the end justifies the means as long as it is working to their advantage, nevermind the outcome, or the devastation that comes with it.

    There is no reform needed in immigration law. What is required is strict enforcement of existing law and a good start would be to give well publicized maximum punishment to employers who hire illegals.

    Without available jobs, the illegals would self deport.

The technique is a little too transparent, and he’ll never understand that he wins no allies since there’s no love lost between the conservatives on this site and GWB.

        This attempt at diversion from the subject matter is a shopworn and impotent tool of the left. He’ll also try to play (and always unsuccessfully) the race card. He thinks scorekeeping and making comparisons are more important than addressing the hard issues.

        He does these things under a monnicker that is supposed to garner himself respect. Since he won’t respond to repeated attempts to get him to divulge the prefix “Doc,” we can only assume that he’s a legend in his own mind, and no one else’s.

        A recent example of the technique, when he says, “So I guess you would admit that President Obama should be held to a higher standard than other Presidents. I wonder why?” The sane folks on this site already knew the answer before he asked it: because this man HELD HIMSELF OUT to be better, more transparent, fiscally responsible, lobby-free, special interest-free, and post-racial. And turned out be not just the usual lying politician, but a dangerous ideologue who is destroying the country.

        In these dangerous times for our country, it’s not too much to ask that the man in the Oval Office adhere to the highest standards possible, that he lead the country as an American rather than a campaigning partisan Democrat, that he respect the oath of office and the Constitution upon which it is based, and that he use the correct methods to stimulate the economy, instead of employing the methods precisely 180 degrees opposite.

        You should know (and it should be obvious by my wording) that, since I said previous administrations (plural) it would include Clinton among others. That was purposful on my part. If I want to refer to Bush I will say Bush and if I want to refer to Republican administrations I will say Republican administrations. I am not and never have been one who thinks one side are all angels and the other side all devils.

        I find it strange that the number of 11 million ilegals has been the same number for I know the past 6 years. With our border being wide open all this time not one more ilegal has come across? At an estimated 1/2 a million or more crossing the border every year, how can they continue to say we only have an estemated 11 million here?

        How many of you remember the the leftist mantra “50 million uninsured” when the Dems were trying to sell Obamacare? I heard it a great number of times. Then, suddenly, the number changed to 30-35 million! Now why was that?

        Tha answer was simple: the left was caught including the number of illegal aliens in the “uninsured” column. This was telling, for two reasons. First, it indicated that they estimated the number of illegals to be higher than the “official” estimates, and second, that they full well intend to eventually cover these criminals under health care at the taxpayers expense! As opaque (or translucent) as this administration tries to be, they are always too dumb to do it right.

        A relative of mine moved to Arizona as her husband had to go there for awhile for schooling. She said she can look out her window day or night and just see illegals streaming in.
        Just look at what the percentage rate is for the amount of people deported and the amount of illegals here now, just 3.6% (Thanks Ikor)
        Sure, more should be deported than ever before, we have more illegals than ever before.
        What bothers me is all of the red tape and ‘investigations’ that it takes to deport those 392,000.
        If they would allow our border patrol to do their job, it wouldn’t cost so much nor take so long.
        Obama promised change, but so far just more of the same—only worse.

        By the way during the Bush administration I was writing Congressmen, and the Pres. repeatedly voicing my concern and disdain over their not following the laws that were already on the books.
        We don’t need ‘new’ laws or ‘reforms’, we need to follow the laws that are supposed to be in effect NOW!

        I realize that we have children who have grwon up here, and they do need to be allowed to stay, but they need to get in line for legal status. They also need to learn to follow the rules and laws of our country and appreciate the chance they are getting.
        Meanwhile we need to get rid of every congressman or woman who wants immigratrion reform. We have been reformed to death.

        Let me put this into terms that even you can’t ignore. when you go fishing, if there are 11 million fish in a stream you catch a few fish. If there are 30 million fish in that stream you are gonna catch quite a few more. Same with the illegals. When there are 11 million there are gonna be a certain number caught. when there are 30 million the saturation is so much higher that actually NObamas regime has Done LESS!!!

      I think you may be correct, but what I do not like is all the illegals will somehow get amnisty or something darn near the same. I want them all deported. I do not give a damn about the circumstances or if they have been here for 20 years.I do not want them here as we have too many hispanics the way it is. Deport them all and if they want to come back then get in line.
      You also need to ask yourself why is our government continually bringing undesirables into this country. Mostly Muslims. Its scary. I would like to see more white Europeans immigrate, but they put a stop to that. It is like we discriminate against ourselves. Repeal the civil rights laws.

        Craig, ‘Bozo’ has complete faith in his White House “Gods.” The #1 progressive specialty at the moment is to 1) enforce laws they like and 2) ignore all other laws.
        Whatever it takes to get easy votes is what will get done. If millions of illegals can find their way to the voting booth (via “social justice”), then that’s what progressives want. It has everything to do with standards and morality (it’s easier if both are ignored). So much for wannabe elites and their “Gods.”

        No, you’re hearing from the “rule of law” crowd, and I would hope that crowd is a BIG one, since that’s the very basis of the founding of our nation.

        And the “melting pot” canard is quickly seen for what it is. LEGAL immigration is what created our diversity, and is admittedly our strength, but the melting pot no longer exists here, except for the smart LEGAL immigrants who understand what America is all about.

        It should be obvious to even the marginally informed that Muslim Sharia Law would turn the melting pot concept on its head, that pressures for bilingual classes in school, like the old Ebonics argument, militate against any reasonable fulfillment of what it means to be an American.

        If you want to be a hyphenated American, you are in a class of people who consider their status as somehow deserving of special treatment, and normally at the expense of the American taxpayer.

        As far a Sharia Law is concerned, I am not as confident as you are. I lived in Europe for almost 20 years and I’ve seen the methodology of the Muslim immigrants there. I was in the Netherlands when it was discovered that the exclusively Muslim elementary schools were putting calendars on the wall that glorified, in living color photos, the 9/11 tragedy.

        Most still live in ghettoes in European cities, and refuse to assimilate. Sharia Law seems to be alive and thriving in these ghettoes. Would it ever happen here? I truly don’t know, but my years of experience tell me “never say never.”

        We stopped being a “melting pot” (metalurgically speaking… strengthening via alloying to become something “distinctly American”) the second the left began their balkanization campaign and insisted on hyphenated Americans. Ask any La Raza or NAACP member and they’ll proudly tell you they’re Latin or African first and an American a distant second.

        Maybe the evidence is out there, but it must be scanty because I haven’t seen it.

        Not quite sure how to quantify that. In the “old days” the terms were used by the “observer” to describe a neighborhood. I believe the immigres were enamored with being called Americans.     I wouldn’t put faith in the idea that the GOP has what it takes to live up to its ‘pledge.’ As long as people remember to distinguish between Republicans and conservatives, it shouldn’t be too difficult to understand what’s possible and what isn’t.
    The GOP may be a bit more motivated to keep some people in a trance, but that’s the GOP’s problem. The GOP has too much in common with the dolts on the other side of the aisle. That cat is out of its bag, and the upcoming election will amaze and shock both the GOP and the dolts. Enjoy, schmucks.
