Obama's Plan To Expand Stem Cell Research Blocked By Court

Obama's plan to expand stem cell research blocked by court Dealing at least a temporary blow to the Obama administration’s planned expansion of stem cell research, a Federal judge has ordered a ban on public funding for these types of studies.

U.S. District Judge for the District of Columbia, Royce Lamberth, ruled that the guidelines published last year by the National Institutes of Health, which permitted Federal funding for studies on existing stem cell lines, violated Federal law that prohibits Federal funds to be used on research that destroys human embryos.

While social conservatives applauded the ruling, it has been met with criticism from many members of the scientific community.

"This injunction blocks important research on how to unlock the enormous potential of human embryonic stem cells," said Sean Tipton of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

"It will be incredibly disruptive and once again drive the best scientific minds into work less likely to yield treatments for conditions from diabetes to spinal cord injury," he added.

In March 2009, after a little more than a month in office, President Obama signed an executive order reversing the Bush administration’s ban on Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.ADNFCR-1961-ID-19930325-ADNFCR

    All this religious mumbo jumbo is silly. The simple solution to the problem is to create a district where such research is legal, and keep the religious ones out of it. Also, keep them from benefiting from it, as they are nothing but obstacles and fodder for the GOP.

    Throughout history religion has been used to subvert sciencetific research. The fear of God as an angry bring that will punish anyone that does not behave in the prescribed way. This is fear mongering by religious people on each other and by defauld on everybody else. Once upon a time the earth was flat and was at the center of the universe, or so we were told by the church and it was consider a sacrilege to say otherwise. See what happenned to Galileo and others.
    But religion is ‘rubber made’, no matter how many times it is proven wrong it bounces back with a new thesis that will take years to debunk, and so on, and on, and on to the ends of time. And why this?: the answer is simple, and it should be obvious because religion is man made, and one man knows better than other what God is or wants. That is why there are so many religions. Here, the chrisitian bible is at the center of our religious believes, yet, as devine inspired as they claim it to be, in it all the solutions to every day needs and wants are human in nature. So the question is why no ‘devine’ solutions?. The answer, again, is that it is human (man made). The only ‘devine’ act referenced in the bible is man’s punishment for his/her sins at the hand of God. Everything else there is for human solutions for anything, like raising an army for war against another king because is Gods will, or as directed by God. Why this then. If you, the religious, preach that God is so powerful and, just like he put us here he can take us out, then, tell me why does he needs men to destroy kings and kingdoms?. It is not logical because it contradicts, as you said, that God is omnipotent.
    Now that we all agreed withou fear of punishment that the earth is not at the center of the universe, we could probably accept that ‘embryonic’ stem cell research might be the right thing to do, and those who opposed it either based on principles, and/or religious believes, could in the future make a choice based on those principles on whether to refuse medication and/or receive any life saving procedure that came about from embryonic stem cell research. This would be the right thing to do, but not to deny instead the benefits of a cure to countles of ailing people worldwide.

    The "case" is about politics from the extreme right. At the root if it is the chant, "It's a baaaaaaabeeeeee". It's a red meat issue used to distract and march the True Believers (one should really read Eric Hoffer's book) away from common sense and their own self interest.

    The court case is about government interfearence in promising research. It could just as easily be said that tax payer money is being misspent on adult stem cell research because the embrionic has been neglected and it shows a lot of promise.

      - Let’s talk about the politics and government interference of the EXTREME LEFT: In 2009, Obummer rescinded an executive order by Bush, which would have funded adult stem cells and new research with iPS cells.       - It could NOT “just as easily be said that tax payer money is being misspent on adult stem cell research,” because, as I mentioned above, Obummer rescinded funding for this in 2009!

      - Embryonic stem cell research has NOT been neglected by any stretch of the immagination. As I pointed out previously, research actually increased during the Bush federal funding restrictions, and billions of dollars have been poured into it during those years from state and private sources, not to mention all the research that’s been done throughout the world. And what do they have to show for it? NOTHING!

      - Adult stem cells and iPS cells show FAR more promise than embryonic stem cells for the following reasons:

      + They are less likely to cause tumors.
      + Over 70 (and still counting) treatments have already been developed from adult stem cells.
      + They don’t cause immune reactions, because they are the patient’s own cells.
      + They are much easier to obtain (e.g. iPS cells can come from either the patient’s own skin or fat).
      + There are NO ethical issues associated with these stem cells.

      So, Robert, why would I as a taxpayer want my tax dollars to be spent on stem cells that haven’t produced any treatments, with all the money that’s already been poured into them, when I know that there are alternative sources of stem cells that are FAR more promising?

    I wish all of the energy I see going into fighting or supporting embryonic stem cell research could be channeled to support adult stem cell therapy in the U.S. I have a terminal illness and due to the regulatory policies of the FDA in the U.S. am forced to go offshore to have treatment with my own stem cells. The FDA says our own stem cells are drugs. Millions of people in this country are terminally or chronically ill and where is the fervor about allowing us to have adult stem cell therapy to try to improve and save our lives? Instead, the argument is constantly about embryonic stem cell research, which is just that – research. Treatments are decades away. What most do not understand is that research is very lucrative. It has made many scientists very wealthy and universities depend on it to bring in big dollars. Actually treating people and finding cures on the other hand, would cut into the trillions of dollars that the pharmaceutical industry makes on our dependence on drugs from cradle to grave. The FDA is in bed with Big Pharma so they are using their regulatory power to halt and slow any progress in actually using adult stem cells for treatment in this country. The plan is to get Big Pharma involved somehow and they need time for that. The FDA has already brought suit against Regenerative Sciences, a company that uses a person’s own stem cells in orthopedic procedures, thus avoiding invasive surgery. The nice thing with adult stem cells is there is no moral argument, no rejection issues and therapy is showing success for many conditions. The media has brought on much of the confusion as they do not seem to know the difference in stem cells, but politicians are also to blame. They have politicized stem cell therapy to the point that it is no more than a brawl with the big losers being those that are sick and dying. I am co-founder of the Stem Cell Pioneers forum. We are dedicated to helping people and giving them hope, but until the public thoroughly understands the games being played (and yes it is all about the money and polotics), and demands that adult stem cell treatments be made available, we will continue to be mired in this never ending argument surrounding embryonic stem cell research.       The basis of your argument is incorrect. You are presuming that to fund embrionic stem cell research that adult stem cell research will be reduced. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There is enough investment money to go around because they all want to make money.

      The government thought that if one woman can make a baby in nine months then nine women can make a baby in one month just isn't true. Research takes time. Things need to grow, they need to be tested, and enough needs to be found out about developments that some degree of safety needs to be in place before ther is a general release.

        Robert, this is simply NOT true. There is only a FINITE amount of FEDERAL TAXPAYER money to go into this research, and they are all COMPETING for it. That's what the court case is all about. Furthermore, adult stem cells, as well as iPS cells, have been shown to be far more promising than embryonic stem cells. Over 70 treatments have already been developed with adult stem cells, whereas NO treatments have been developed with embryonic stem cells. All they've gotten out of embryonic stem cells are a lot of distinct cell lines that cause tumors! To date, after all these years, research with embryonic stem cells has been an abysmal failure. This is research that has a dead end, and it's a COMPLETE WASTE of taxpayer money!

        As usual, Robert, you don’t have your facts straight. The Bush federal restrictions had very little impact on embryonic stem cell research. It actually had the effect of significantly INCREASING overall support for stem cell research from many other sources, and tons of money was spent on embryonic stem cell research in many states and private institutions in this country, as well as all over the world. As a result, a LOT of research was done, even without those “inbred crappy ‘approved’ lines” that you referred to. In spite of the billions of dollars from private and state sources that have been poured into embryonic stem cell research over the last few years, NO treatments have been developed! So, Robert, what part of, “It doesn’t work, and it’s wasting our tax dollars,” don’t you get?

        Goldwater had no problem with family values. Each family could value what it wanted without government messing with them. Goldwater was pro-choice in abortion because he didn't believe that government should interfear with personal choices. With all the crap from the extreme right opposing universal health care in the name of "choice" I'm surprised that they would take medical choices away from women in abortion, a MEDICAL PROCEDURE.

        Goldwater also had no problem with gays in the military.

        I find it amazing that the best fighting force in the World, the United states military, would get all bent out of shape about a gay person in the shower.     There are differences in embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are able to produce organs, hand, feet and everything in which we become. Human stem cells does not grow new hands, feets, ears and on and on. The embryonic stem cells used in research was harvested to be used in implantation and after the desired number of children is obtained, then the rest are destroyed. I would be very happy to donate product in order that someone may have a good quality of life.

    I thought embryonic stem cells were dead in the water. The research done in the past found these particular stem cells will grab onto all cells including cancer and other diseases. Scientist should concentrate on the stem cells they know are healers. Develop that and move on.

    I will comment only once on this subject for is is hard for me. the sanctidy of life is Gods not ours. I am against stem cell research from fetuses, because I lost the most important person in the world to me when I was born. My mother had the choice that either I or her would die, and you know what her decesion was. the sanctidy of life is the most important thing their is and between God and I in this case. If God wanted children to or the embryos be used for experimentation he would have provided for it but he did not. end of case.

      A stem cell is just that…a single microscopic cell, not a person. It’s from a human, but still, not a human being. It can’t be equated to an acorn as a tree. An acorn can actually develop on it’s own. A microscopic stem cell cannot. I’d like to see people show the same care, concern and respect to living beings, as with one single microscopic cell.

    If embryonic stem cell research is immoral, abortion is also. Even though adult stem cells have been more successful, the push has been for the embryonic cells. The pro-choicers know if they concede on the stem cells that abortion isn’t far behind. The problem is by pushing for embryonic, we are falling behind on the more promising adult cell research. How far along would we be if we weren’t trying to protect abortion?

      The question of stem cells is currently the dominant subject in the debate over biotechnology and human genetics: Should we use embryonic stem cells or adult stem cells for future medical therapies? Embryonic stem cells are taken from a developing embryo at the blastocyst stage, destroying the embryo, a developing human life. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, are found in all tissues of the growing human being and, according to latest reports, also have the potential to transform themselves into practically all other cell types, or revert to being stem cells with greater reproductive capacity. Embryonic stem cells have not yet been used for even one therapy, while adult stem cells have already been successfully used in numerous patients, including for cardiac infarction (death of some of the heart tissue).

      Stem cells are of wide interest for medicine, because they have the potential, under suitable conditions, to develop into almost all of the different types of cells. They should therefore be able to repair damaged or defective tissues (for example, destroyed insulin-producing cells in the pancreas). Many of the so-called degenerative diseases, for which there are as yet no effective therapies, could then be alleviated or healed.

      It is remarkable that in the debate–often carried on with little competence–the potential of embryonic stem cells is exaggerated in a one-sided way, while important moral questions and issues of research strategy are passed over in silence. Generally, advocates of research with embryonic stem cells use as their main argument that such research will enable us to cure all of the diseases that are incurable today–cancer, AIDS, Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, and so forth. Faced with such a prospect, it is supposed to be “acceptable” to “overlook” a few moral problems.

      On closer inspection, however, the much extolled vision of the future turns out to be a case of completely empty promises: Given the elementary state of research today, it is by no means yet foreseeable, whether even one of the hoped-for treatments can be realized. Basically, such promised cures are a deliberate deception, for behind the mirage of a coming medical wonderland, promoted by interested parties, completely other research objectives will be pursued that are to be kept out of public discussion as much as possible.

      Perfect candor should rule in stem cell research. This requires that the scientist himself clearly establish the moral limits of his activity and declare what the consequences of research with embryonic stem cells really are. In the process, no one can escape the fact that, should one wish to use embryonic stem cells for “therapeutic purposes,” the very techniques will be developed that will also be used for the cloning of human beings, the making of human-animal hybrids, the manipulation of germ lines, and the like–thus for everything other than therapeutic purposes. Any coverup or hypocrisy in this matter will very quickly reflect upon the research as a whole.

      What Are Stem Cells, Exactly?
      It is appropriate here to sketch the characteristics of stem cells, and the overthrow of some dogmas of developmental biology. Broadly speaking, a stem cell is one that–in the course of cell division and increase in the numbers of cells–is able to reproduce itself and also mature into various specialized types of cells. The stem cell with the greatest potential (totipotential) is the fertilized egg cell, which is capable of developing into a complete organism.

      According to the usual–but actually very doubtful–explanation, the fertilized egg cell has totipotential up to the stage of division into eight cells, and in later stages the cells retain only “pluripotential.” That is, they can form many different types of tissues, but not the complete organism. Embryonic stem cells–that is, those 50 cells within a blastocyst, which then continue to develop into the embryo proper–have this pluripotential. In the course of further specialization, stem cells of individual tissues are formed, such as that of the bone marrow, from which all the other kinds of blood cells develop.

      Behind this description lies the conception that a linear process of differentiation is played out, in the development of the individual, toward increasingly “mature,” specialized cells in the individual tissues, from totipotentiality to tissue specificity. This process is supposed to run only forward, but never backward. That is, as soon as a cell has reached a certain degree of “maturity,” the way back to earlier stages of development is closed off. So it is evident that a stem cell’s capacity to perform is increasingly limited to specific functions, and it loses, correspondingly, the manifold capabilities still present in earlier developmental stages.

      According to latest reports, however, this dogma of developmental biology does not hold. Evidently, tissue-specific stem cells have the ability–as has been impressively demonstrated in experiments with animals–to “transdifferentiate” themselves when in a different environment–that is, to take on the cell functions of the new tissue. Thus, neuronal stem cells of mice have transformed themselves into blood stem cells and produced blood cells. Indeed, there are indications of another capability of adult stem cells: Apparently they have the potential to be “reprogrammed.” Not only can they adjust to the specific conditions of a new tissue environment, but they can even assume more generalized, earlier levels of development, so that it even appears possible that they become totipotent again.

      Laboratory Virola in Ukraine has demonstrated that bone marrow stromal cells in culture are pluripotent–that is, they are able to differentiate into cells of liver, bone, fat, cartilage, and so on. Researchers at this laboratory have developed techniques to differentiate in vitro mouse bone marrow stromal cells into different types of neuronal and glial cells. The laboratory is seeking funds to develop similar methods for human bone marrow stromal cells.

      Problems of ‘Therapeutic Cloning’
      Until now, talk of a possible source of human replacement tissue has centered on embryonic stem cells, the production of which has been extremely controversial. They are a typical product of “consuming embryonic research,” so called, because in obtaining them from a human embryo produced by artificial fertilization in vitro, the embryo is destroyed.

      The most important research technique for which such embryos are obtained is “therapeutic cloning.” In principle, a human egg cell is denucleated, that is, the DNA is removed, and in its place is put the nucleus of a somatic (body) cell. The egg cell is stimulated with a short electrical pulse, and it then develops into the blastocyst, from which stem cells can be removed. These are identical with those of the donor of the somatic cell nucleus.

      Normally it goes unmentioned, that it is only a small step from this so-called “therapeutic cloning” (because, it is claimed, in this way a therapy for diseases can be developed) to what is called “reproductive cloning.” The only difference is that the development of the embryo is not interrupted in the early blastocyst stage; instead the embryo is implanted in a uterus and a complete organism develops–an exact genetic copy of the donor. “Dolly,” the first cloned sheep, was produced by this method, and here is the basis for the widespread fear that the same method that is used for “therapeutic cloning” can also be used for the selective breeding of humans.

      In addition to the obvious moral consideration, there are still other serious disadvantages that make this path to the development of human “replacement parts” appear to be untenable.

      The danger of tumors. So far there has been no solution to the problem of developing in the laboratory an unmistakable identifier for stem cells that can distinguish them unequivocally from cancer cells. For this reason, it is also not possible to produce sufficiently pure cell cultures from stem cells. So far, with embryonic mouse stem cells, a purity of only 80 percent has been achieved. That is in no way sufficient for cell transplantation as a human therapy. In a cell culture for therapeutic purposes, there must not be a single undifferentiated cell, since it can lead to unregulated growth, in this case to the formation of teratomas, a cancerous tumor derived from the germ layers. This problem would not be expected with adult stem cells, because of their greater differentiation.

      Genetic instability. Only recently a further problem has emerged. Fundamental doubt of the suitability of embryonic stem cells for transplantation has come to the surface because of the genetic instability of cloned cells.

      Cloned animals like Dolly give the outward appearance of full health, but the probability of their having numerous genetic defects is very high. Moreover, the entire cloning procedure is extremely ineffective. Most cloned animals die before birth, and of those born alive, not even half survive for three weeks. In the best case, there is a success rate of 3 to 4 percent.

      One of the reasons for this high failure rate has now been discovered by the German scientist Rudolf Jaenisch at the Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his colleague, Ryuzo Yanagimachi. Their conception is that in cloning–that is, when the nucleus of a somatic cell is inserted into a denucleated egg cell–the reprogramming of the genes does not proceed properly, so that not all of the genes that are necessary to the early phase of embryonic development, are activated. Even when cloned animals survive at all, probably every clone would have subtle genetic abnormalities that would frequently become noticeable only later in life.

      Jaenisch performed his experiments with mice that had been cloned using embryonic stem cells in place of the somatic cells, which produces better results. But to his surprise, the reprogramming of the inserted genetic material by the embryonic cells proceeded in a very unregulated way. There were no two clones in which the same pattern of gene activation was found, and Jaenisch is convinced that the use of embryonic stem cells was clearly responsible.

      What consequences follow from this for the therapeutic use of human embryonic stem cells–consequences that will in fact be multiplied through cloning–are not yet foreseeable.

      Whoever Would Cure, Must Use Adult Stem Cells
      It has been known for about 30 years that stem cells are present in the tissue of the adult, but it was assumed that they could only form cells of a particular tissue. That is, reprogramming them was considered impossible. In recent years, however, pluripotent stem cells were discovered in various human tissues–in the spinal cord, in the brain, in the mesenchyme (connective tissue) of various organs, and in the blood of the umbilical cord. These pluripotent stem cells are capable of forming several cell types–principally blood, muscle, and nerve cells. It has been possible to recognize, select, and develop them to the point that they form mature cell types with the help of growth factors and regulating proteins.
      This shows that in tissues of the body, adult stem cells possess a much greater potential for differentiation than previously assumed. This knowledge must be brought into the public consciousness with all possible emphasis. If stem cell research were really only meant for therapeutic uses, which it most obviously should be, adult stem cells would promise a very productive research field–and beyond that, a possibility, without moral objection, to discover fundamentals of the dynamics of tissue differentiation.

      It has become clear from transplantation experiments with animals, that stem cells of a particular tissue can develop into cells of a completely different kind. Thus, bone marrow stem cells have been induced to become brain cells, but also liver cells.

      Adult stem cells obviously have a universal program for division that is common to all the kinds of tissue stem cells, and makes them mutually interchangeable. This was discovered by Alexei Terskikh at Stanford University School of Medicine in California. He was able to prove that adult stem cells of blood-forming tissues, and of the brain, activate the same genes, in order to preserve their status as stem cells.

      In May 2001, a further, spectacular experiment was reported, which was carried out on mice by scientists at Yale University. The researchers obtained stem cells from the bone marrow of male mice, and injected it into females whose own marrow had been destroyed by radioactive irradiation. Eleven months later, the male stem cells (identifiable through the male Y-chromosome) were found not only in the females’ bone marrow, but also in their blood, and in their gut, lung, and skin tissues.

      If these observations are correct and are confirmed by other teams of scientists, science should concentrate on research with adult stem cells and renounce further experiments with the embryonic.

      Human Treatments
      Moreover, very promising treatments of serious diseases with adult stem cells have already been tried. The special advantage is that there are no rejection reactions, because the cells are from the same body.

      Of longer standing is treatment with bone marrow stem cells. The treatment comes into play when, for example, a patient has lost his or her blood-forming tissue through radiation or high-dose chemotherapy. Previously removed bone marrow stem cells are then retransplanted, and are able to resume the formation of blood cells.

      In 2001, however, a team of doctors at the Duesseldorf University Clinic carried out a treatment of very far-reaching consequences. For the first time, they treated a cardiac infarct patient with stem cells from his own body. The cardiologist, Prof. Bodo Eckehard Strauer, is sure that the stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow, after injection into the infarct zone, autonomously converted to heart muscle. The functioning of the severely damaged heart clearly improved within a few weeks.

      Four days after the infarction, the doctors took bone marrow from the patient’s pelvis using local anesthesia. The stem cells in the marrow were concentrated outside of the body and implanted in the infarct area the next day with a special technique via a coronary artery. However, the doctors could not yet take cardiac tissue to prove definitively that the implanted blood stem cells had converted to heart muscle cells. But, according to Strauer, there is no other way to explain the marked improvement in the patient’s condition. After this first successful operation, six more patients have already been treated with their own stem cells, with similarly positive results.

      There are also reports of successful treatments with adult stem cells in cases of Crohn’s disease (a chronic infection of the gut), thalassemia (a blood disease), and a rare skin disease. And–despite the fact that basic research with adult stem cells is in its earliest beginnings and is in no way being promoted with urgency–there have been a growing number of reports lately of experiments with animals, from which it emerges that adult stem cells can successfully transform themselves into differentiated cells of organs of many kinds.

      In contrast, reports of successful conversions of embryonic stem cells are very infrequent and cautious. Thus, we find in Science of Dec. 1, 2000 (Vol. 290, pp. 1672-1674): “In contrast, the human embryonic stem cells and fetal germ cells that made headlines in November 1998 because they can, in theory, develop into any cell type have so far produced relatively modest results. Only a few papers and meeting reports have emerged from the handful of labs that work with human pluripotent cells. . . . The work suggests that it will not be simple to produce the pure populations of certain cell types that would be required for safe and reliable cell therapies. . . .”

      This is the restrained language used by established science to describe a truly disastrous set of results.

      There are, of course, still substantial problems to be overcome, even with adult stem cells: They are relatively rare, and are hard to find with the techniques used so far. They are also not very easy to culture outside of the body. It was therefore an important advance that Australian researchers of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research have now found a way to isolate nerve stem cells with “extreme purity” from the brains of mice. In Nature of August 16, 2001 (Vol. 412, pp. 736-739), they reported obtaining a culture of 80 percent purity, compared to a previous rate of 5 percent at best.

      It is now urgently necessary to tackle the research in precisely this direction, in order to find out the exact conditions under which the differentiation of stem cells comes about and how, in detail, it proceeds. Only by this morally unassailable route will it be possible to develop new therapies for serious, heretofore incurable diseases, and beyond that, to improve our understanding of the development of life itself.

        It can lead directly to a cure. The Islets Of Langerhans are the special cells that produce the insulin. By discovering by what mechanism the embrionic cells (much faster than others) can make new cells for insulin scientists can learn a way to stimulate the body to repair itself. Without that research it will take longer.

        BTW, it is YOUR choice to to benefit from any medical treatment. My sister watched her father-in-law die from a heart attack in her husband's arms for lack of a simple asperin that could have saved him according to some disgusted doctors. To his last breath he was so committed to his Christian Science religion it clearly killed him.

        I appreciate your commitment to your version of christanity. I look at it as evolution in action.

    The fact remains abortion is legal in the USA and since it is legal for now denying access to what is legally considered medical waste just out of spite because the law is not what some want it to be is just cruel .May be other forms of stem cell rrsearch is better than embryotic but there is no reason to stop this if they continue long enough who knows what they may find.Or is that what every one is scared of ? that this may actually prove to be benificial and may lead to better quality of life for some people who now have very little .If there is even the slightest of chances that a life can be saved or improved by doing this research we should not be blinded by emotion or spite towards a law that some disagree with when there is so much at stake.We have to remember not all religions in america are against abortion and if we are to preserve the first amendment we need to acknowledge all of them not just the popular ones.In america the constitution protects all beleifs not just those of people who beleive in god. Our laws are written to protect all our rights including the right not to worship any god .So if people feel like they want to live some where that religious leaders make and enforce the laws i hear the middle east has several very nice countrys where that type of society exists..

        a lady just up the street from me ran up a bill of over 350 thousand dollars at our hospital. They gave her a very lenient payment plan that will never pay the whole bill off and she is only 35 years old. when she was laid off for three months, they forgave her payments till she got back to work. now how in the fiddle dee hell is that not EQUAL access??? I know, you want it for free!!!

    it is a shame that at least one of our great teaching hospitals has had to relocate their research dept. to singapore which has no restrictions on stem cell research. what is wrong with discovering ways to use our own stem cells to regenerate new organs for diseased organs? what is the problem with researching new methods for dealing with spinal cord injuries, parkinsons and other horrible neuromuscular diseases? i have enough faith in medical research to believe that no abuses of embryos about to be discarded and that only pure medical research will be done. we are all the beneficiaries of our medical miracles of today. our wounded warriors will be the better for this research and we owe them the best medical care on the planet. that is about the only thing that i agree with the messiah on. keep religion out of this very important research.

Our stubbornness is sending research overseas and we may have to buy this research from them if they have the edge on it. If there is a greater good in helping injured people we needn’t be afraid. If someone wants to create a frankinstein type monster then the plug should be pulled on that type of project.

It is like the global warming crap. It has been proven that our footprint, relative to warming, is VERY small. They have to keep it going so they can tax the heck out of us, cause our heating and electrical costs to go up…and God only knows what else… Rape the wealth out of this country and put it elsewhere while they keep us confounded with racial, religious and cultural differences…and not to mention all of the crappy entertainment and lousy education…wake up people. Of course, the Hyde Ammendment is “still in place.” Obummer keeps repeating this like a mantra. However, as I said previously, and as Obummer has conveniently not mentioned, the Hyde Ammendment only covers the CURRENT HHS appropriations, which are renewed annually. It will NOT cover any new programs created in ObummerCare. When ObummerCare gets into full swing, the Hyde Admendment will no longer apply, because the old programs, which are CURRENTLY funded by annual HHS appropriations, will be replaced by new programs in ObummerCare.     If they are just going to be discarded any way why should we deny them access to them if there is even the slightest possability that they could one day lead to a treatment for a child who has never walked or seen their mother or father or any other one of a endless list of ailments that could be treated by at least trying to make use of what is other wise going to be discarded as medical waste .I know this is hard for many to agree with beacuse of moral reasons and some people beleive that abortion is wrong i dont really like the idea of it being used for birth control but as long as it is happening there is no reason to not allow research to be done.I really dont see how this is any differant than a person donating their organs when they die ..

      Can you point to any success in the embryonic stem cell research? I have read about the success in adult stem cell field, but not the embryonic. What about cord blood stem cells? Which, I have also read that they are actually more productive than embryonic stem cells. What if they do find some cure for a disease that involves the taking of a live walking talking human being. Will you be for that too? Where will you draw the line? When it is your life that is threatened. Or will you stand up and defend someone elses life?

    All this politics about embryonic stem cell research that I have been reading about.

    My faith teaches me that we don’t receive our spirit until we leave the womb. Yet my very faith also considers abortion a very serious sin with very, very limited conditions that it acceptable–such as the life of mother and child is in danger–in other words the pregnancy is killing them literally. So I cannot say on the issue of the morals of the whole thing.

    Now let me write the one thing I have learned all through this that is very interesting. If you could grow organs and so forth from embryonic stem cells, you WILL have to perform the same anti-rejection treatments that you do for organ transplants. The embryonic stem cells have the same problem that the organ transplant does. That is, genetically it is not the same as your genes and thus not native to your body so your immune system will attack it as a foreign body just the same. This is why organ donors often receive treatments to suppress their immune system.

    So what I read is that the most successful stem cell treatments actually come from “adult” stem cells. Why? Because they harvest from your body to treat your body. They have a much lower rejection rate of those cells because they ARE your cells.

It is currently led by President Jon O'Brien.

      For those who are of a religious basis who are inclined to not have abortions they can act on their belief. If one was in China that abortion would be heavily favored. But, again, we are in America where we can choose.

      Actually, embryonic stem cells are of significantly greater value for research because they have the ability to grow into almost any tissue, i.e. muscle, skin, organ, etc. They reproduce more vigorously while adult cells are sluggish and difficult to grow. They are much more specialized and therefore are more difficult to use because they will not grow into certain tissues.
