The way to achieve this is through taxation and government implementation of programs that will guarantee these things for all people.

The right political stance equally endorses a just society, but may criticize those who make poor choices and feel that while equal opportunity should exist, a government should not legislate for this. In fact it is argued that social justice is diminished when governments create programs to deal with it, especially when these programs call for greater taxation. Instead, those who have more money should be encouraged to be philanthropic, not by paying higher taxes, which is arguably unjust.

The problem with writing to our “elected” officials is if one writes to them about something that isn’t part of their agenda, it seems that they will at best misrepresent and twist what you said when they reply. The Constitution defines our law not the Koran, the Bible or any other religious book or belief and there is very little support for the mandates of our Constitution from people on this site. Many of those teachers moved to Boulder and became professors at C.U., where my sister went and lost her ability to think indepentantly. Subsequently, she regained her ability to think for herself. Where were the the parents of these students. My children attended public schools, and all are Conservative. I wonder why.

Fortunately there are a number of our young people that are learning in the government schools inspite of the system. I think there was some news about considering not doing the traditional Christmas tree or something like that. I cannot recall what it was. So I can understand that some might be confused. I know some Christians who denounce the Christmas tree themselves for completely different reasons than being politically correct. Like they find it offensive because it has pagan origins. Others don’t give gifts. The list of different traditions even within Christianity is varied and many. We have just become so accustomed to certain common traditions that we assume that if one of our expectations is not met then they are not Christian like we think they should be. For example, I told my wife that I will NOT teach my children that there is a Santa Clause (my apologies to those who might be offended or believe there is). However, I knew going in that I was asking for a MAJOR issue there so a lot of my family traditions are secondary to this. I essentially conceded all the other “basic” Christmas traditions I had grown up with in favor of what she would like because this was a big one. And, yes, even though my parents never taught me that there was a Santa Clause, they still hid the presents and brought them out Christmas Eve after we had all gone to bed (I think my dad almost stayed up all night on a couple occasions wrapping and/or assembling things). And I still enjoy the many Santa Clause movies. I know there are those even within my own family that take a harsher stand on Santa Clause, not even allowing themselves to enjoy the stories/movies. So I am well aware of some of the differences and that we often get caught up in these unimportant details.

However, that all being said, I was still beginning to doubt that President Obama is a Christian myself. And then Glenn Beck explained it rather nicely recently. If you take his spiritual advisors into consideration and realize that this is most likely Obama’s “flavor” of Christianity, than it makes a lot of sense. Reverend Wright’s apparent hate of America. So Obama is apologizing, bowing, and scraping to all those who Reverend Wright claims the great, evil, oppressive America keeps down (which includes the Muslims). His stand on the Mosque within the devastation of the Twin Tower collapse also makes sense when you consider this potential belief that America is the great Oppressor and that Muslims are among those we’ve oppressed. If you have been taught that radical Muslims have a right to hate American, then it is harder to see them as radical. Sort of like being taught that the Crusaders had a right to hate Muslims back during the Crusades (and Muslims had conquered a lot of “Christian” kingdoms…), so then you see all the atrocities that came with the Crusades as perfectly reasonable too because they were “justified” in their hate. I used the example of the Crusades because there are many who would believe that a great example of radical Christians bent on conquest over others. So when I realize that Obama may be Christian under this definition, it makes a lot more sense. Of course, I would disagree that he’s Christian, but my definition of Christianity includes follows a few opposing ideas.

Obama = collective salvation?
My belief = individual salvation. We are called to warn our neighbors but our salvation is not dependent on their salvation.

Obama = America is the great Satan? This is similar to radical Muslims and thus the confusion?
My belief = America was divinely inspired. That isn’t say that we are perfect, or that we were perfect, or that we will be. America has its huge list of atrocities, but before America, how many nations cared if they did wrong to another people? Another nation? Did you know that before we got involved in warfare, reparations were traditionally that the conquered nation paid for it. America totally changed the equation. Not perfectly. Not all the time. But we have been building schools in Iraq. Teaching them and training them to have their own military. That isn’t exactly traditional conquest. And religious freedom in the world? Well, before America, it was a struggle even in Europe. After America, it ain’t perfect around the globe but it sure took some leaps and bounds due to the effects of religious freedom here. Even with all our flaws holding us back, I think America has been a catalyst for good on the earth.

By the way, I happen to believe that the idea of collective salvation is very, very old. It is what split the heavens and led a third of the angels to fall from their lofty heights. The story I understand is that God put forth the plan that could save those of us who chose to follow a Savior and the path would be prepared for us. Christ says he’ll do that. Then along comes Lucifer says he’s got a better a plan, he’ll save everyone…. So when I hear the President talk about collective salvation I think he’s playing with very dangerous ideas, or he thinks he is a savior (and despite all those who seem to think the president may be an anti-Christ, I think this would make him actually a false Christ by definition).

Why can’t we lie? The Prez does all the time. Oh that’s right. It’s not a lie. He always has a good “re-explanation” of previous statements to clarify a meaning that supports his personal interests.

First he stated that he did not buy his family Christmas presents. His “Holiday tree” which we proudly call the Christmas Tree, in the White House could not have any reference to the Nativity or Christianity. Hmmm that sounds like a clue.

Also Dan, we taught our children that Santa Claus was aa real as Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse. So we still had fun with Santa characters, but they knew he was fiction. On Christmas Eve we had a birthday party for Jesus and read from the Bible about His birth. Jesus is the reason for the season.

Obama sends so many mixed messages declaring that the call to the Islamic prayer time is the most beautiful sound he has ever heard. He turns his back on our established National Day of Prayer yet he invites the Muslims into the White House for the ‘holy day’ of the beginning of Ramadan, for two years in a row.

Mr. Obama gives off such mixed signals and from the churches that he has attended, as well as how his mother taught him about many different religions,and his not so Christian advisors who are just as confused as he is, I don’t think he is grounded on what Christianity really is.

President Obama is not the first president to resist references to Christian Holidays and traditions. Those who truly believed in the separation of church and state felt it wrong for the government to show any favoritism when it comes to religion. Though he himself declared a day of fasting during his presidency, James Madison later wrote “They seem to imply and certainly nourish the erroneous idea of a national religion.” And in 1808, Thomas Jefferson wrote “Fasting and prayer are religious exercises; the enjoining them an act of discipline. Every religious society has a right to determine for itself the time for these exercises, and the objects proper for them, according to their own particular tenets; and right can never be safer than in their hands, where the Constitution has deposited it.”

The Constitution prohibits any religious test to hold office, yet the people of America continue with this nonsense. The men who wrote the Constitution deliberately and conspicuously left God out of the document, knowing the divisive nature of religion and the effect it could have on the development of our nation. Ironically, those who shout the loudest about the need to return to the Constitution seem to be among the most likely to demand that our leaders proclaim their faith.

The reason we do want someone of Faith in office is because we have been blessed as a Nation because we have always included God in our Nation. What do you know of my faith? I said nothing about my personal beliefs with regard to God, Christ, Buddha or Mohammed. As for the intent of this post, I understand fully what is being discussed and am simply pointing out that the attention being paid to our President’s religion is misplaced. Our nation was deliberately founded without a religious identity.

I understand that those of you who consider yourselves devote Christians believe that our nation MUST include God or Jesus in all we do, but this was exactly what our founders wanted to avoid. Of the first 13, all but two states had a state religion. It was this very experience of state sponsored religion and the resulting troubles that resulted in the agreement to deny the Federal government the power to dictate what we would all believe. And if you have any doubt as to the place of religion in our Government, I suggest you read the Treaty of Tripoli, which reads “As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion…” Could President Adams have made it any more clear? This treaty was proudly printed in our nation’s major papers, and the public approved.

My personal faith does not require that the nation believe as I do. I would ask that all parents teach their children a positive code of values and respect, based on their religion or any other acceptable foundation, but I do not expect, nor want our schools to teach our children my or any other religion. My children are generally polite, respect the value of other’s property and do not use foul language. They do very well in school and are called on to help others from time to time. They do not this because they fear God’s retribution, but because they were taught to consider the feelings of others. This is no to say that we do not attend church, but is meant to indicate that the decline of our society is likely a result of parents failing to involve themselves in their children’s lives.

By the by, the “you and your like minded comrades” jab was very cute. How presumptuous of you to think that you are more American than I. In 1974-76 I went to a Conservative Baptist Church. My daughter 3-4 years old and I went faithfully. The minister always berated someone or some group (long hair,gays,Jews or Catholics). I hung in there for two years and was re-baptized. My wife who was Catholic wouldn’t go until one Sunday. That was a big mistake for this minister went after Catholics as not a true religion. My wife never went back and I “paid” for it when we got back home.I finally realized how hate filled this church was and never went back to this church. What a shame they had to be this way. I can’t imagine what they would be saying about Muslims today!

About that same time the church I was attending was exposing the older youth to other faiths. It was a Christian based church, but they felt that we needed to understand the differences and similarities between religions. As a result I continued to explore a bit, and I can’t begin to express the amount of hostility and intolerance I experienced. Some of this was a result of the pastor’s personal views, but I soon realized that there are some churches that are so certain that they are the only “true” church that there is no place left for tolerance. To that end, I repeat one of my favorite religious jokes.

Joe has died, and when he reaches the pearly gates there is a line. As he waits his turn, he hears Saint Peter ask each person their name and religion. “Carl Withers, Episcopalian” say a man. “Welcome Carl!” says St. Peter. “Down the hallway, 7th door on the left, but please be very quiet as you pass door number 3.” “Anna Stienberg, Jewish” says a women. “Welcome Anna!” “Straight ahead, turn left at the first hall, room 27, but please be very quiet as you pass room 3.” This goes on for some time before it’s Joe’s turn, but when he finally gets to the front he says “Joe Hendrikson, Episcopalian.” “I heard the directions, but tell me Saint Peter, what’s so special about door number 3?” “Those” replied St. Peter “are the ———-. I was watching one of the Christian channels one night and the host had these three men on that were permoting a book they wrote together and they were suppose to be Muslims that had converted to Christianity. It was almost scary because they were not christian and it was obvious and the host seem to realize it too. It was quite awkward for a few minutes. I do NOT recall anywhere in any of my translations where God has required sincere Christians to lie to anybody. In fact, the commandment comes to mind that Good Christians are to confess their sins, openly as needed, and repent, seeking forgiveness from both God and man.

I do not see Obama either confessing to wrongdoing or repenting! And I have not seen where he has ever repented and turned to God for total forgiveness. Normally this is part of the testimony of a real Christian, but of course a fake one would not have had such an experience.

Does Obama carry his Bible so in times of slack he can learn more about what God wants him to do in leading our great nation to higher moral and spiritual levels to secure the promised Blessings of God?

I remember seeing a video of him being interviewed by reports by the gate at the hotel in which he was staying during one of his early trips to Hawaii at Easter time. It was Easter Sunday and one of the reporters asked him what he and the family were up to, to which he replied “Oh, we were just reading the scriptures together…” I GUARANTEE YOU had one of those reports asked him a question like “from which book are you reading?” Obama would have been caught red-handed. He wouldn’t have known what to say. He would have probably said something stupid like “Oh… we’re just browsing around the old testament, and seeing how Abraham and Apostle Paul were together in a cave having communion…” There is no doubt in my mind that he couldn’t cite one Bible verse at all. Not one.

I would like someone to ask him to complete the verse “For God so loved the world…” Obama’s response would be “that he sent me, the most awesomest hoop=shooting multi-ethnic cat ever to rub elbows with these low-level rednecks so that I can save them from their stupid selves.”
