Congressman Lamar Smith Calls For Resolution Condemning Reversal Of Proposition 8

In response to last week’s district court decision to strike down California’s Proposition 8, United States Representative Lamar Smith (R-Texas) has vowed to introduce a resolution condemning the ruling when Congress comes back from recess.
The congressman, who serves on the House Judiciary Committee, will also urge an appeal of the decision, which reverses the ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage that was narrowly passed during the 2008 elections.
“This decision defies the voice of all citizens who have sought to define marriage in their states as the union between one man and one woman,” said Smith, adding that “Judge Walker’s actions should be opposed and the decision should be swiftly overturned.”
Smith’s initiative was praised by the conservative Family Research Council (FRC), which has also criticized what it calls “an activist decision” by Judge Walker that exemplifies “government by judiciary” that it says most Americans resent.
“This case is far from over, and we hope that common sense will reign when the case makes its way to the U.S. Supreme Court," warned FRC president Tony Perkins.
