Obama: Troop Withdrawal In Iraq Is On Schedule

Obama: Troop withdrawal in Iraq is on schedule President Obama said on Monday that his plan to drastically reduce the number of United States troops in Iraq by the end of the summer is on schedule, suggesting that America’s military efforts in the war-torn nation are nearing a conclusion.

While speaking at the national convention of Disabled American Veterans, Obama indicated that America’s presence in Iraq will soon transition toward a diplomatic-led effort, according to The Washington Post.

By the end of August, the number of U.S. troops in Iraq will be reduced to 50,000, with a complete withdrawal scheduled for the end of 2011. The president noted that the soldiers who will remain overseas for the next 18 months will be providing support and training to the Iraqi army.

"As a candidate for president, I pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end," said Obama. "And that is exactly what we are doing."

Despite the president’s celebratory tone, Iraqi officials announced last week that July was the deadliest the nation had seen in over two years, CNN reports. According to figures, a total of 535 civilians, local police officers and Iraqi soldiers were killed during that month.

The U.S. military issued a statement on Sunday disputing the claims, stating that only 222 people were killed in July.

    Does anyone remember “Dick”tater and KGB (Karl and George Bush), you did not know who they was listening to on private conversations and they sure did not want to go through the system which was set up to order legal wire tapping within 24 hours. You can complain now but we have endured much in the last 10 years.

        Duende–I do not approve of war, I never have. Viet Nam and this current war is nothing but a farce. Nothing was accomplished but the unnecessary loss of our soldiers’ lives. These wars were/are nothing but a political scam. Our soldiers should be brought home NOW.
        Regarding Viet Nam, I took off from work and went to numerous marches at the state capitol in Springfield protesting the war. I will do the same this time if any marches are organized.
        I want our soldiers brought home now, not tomorrow or the next day. All I can think of is the waste of lives. The soldiers that will come home with numeorus injuries/disabilities.

Each Pres is given a plate of worms to sort through from the last administration and those before them. Americans were screwed long before Bush and Obama. Keep us ignorant about what is really happening and the more money those screw balls can extract from the American people. Each November, Throw out the Trash. Put a reminder on your refrigerator. We need the 28th Amendment. What is good for the poeple is good for the lawmakers of this country. No more retirement pay after a couple years of messing with American’s minds. Everyone goes on Social Security at retirement then let’s see how fast Social Security gets fixed. Remove the people’s hard earned dollars for Social Security from the “General Fund” and put it back where it belongs…Social Security. If Americans think our politicians have earned a pay raise, let the People agree to the pay raises and not take out of the General Fund for raises. NO politician can have a pay raise while denying the cost of living increases to those who deserve it. More taxes, how can people on fixed incomes pay more taxes without drowing in the politicians’ muck and mire? We vote the clowns in. We vote the clowns out.

      I like what you say. I’m 60 and on SSDisability after working most of my life. I cannot afford even the co-pays. No COLA but an increase in Medicare Part B ($5 a mo), a $20 a mo increase in my rent (if I can’t pay my rent I will be among the homeless wandering the streets-but that’s okay with Dumbama-I’m old and disabled-I should just die and get it over with right?), $6 increase in my equal pay gas, $5 increase in my equal pay electric,(so far -$36 a mo), plus the increases in cost for medications (which I can no longer afford-nada)food, clothing, etc. I’m in the hole and keep my heat down(52 deg) and cooling (don’t use any) costs as low as possible (nowhere near comfortable, thank you Odumbo). Yes. They definitely must get the same “benefits” we get. Our Social Security was meant for US, not in a General Fund for everything else. The government owes us for all the money they “borrowed” or used from the General Fund, with interest.

    We are paying their salaries and I bet they are being handsomely paid. WE are paying Obama to golf, take vacations, send his wife and kids to Italy for a shopping spree. He has vacationed more than any other President, all at our expense.

      Well I have seen lots of pictures of other U.S. presidents in the White House with no flags behind them so that tells me – really nothing. I have seen pictures of President Obama and other presidents with flags behind them so appartently he has no problem with that as was the case with the other presidents. A picture is a fraction of a second so if there is a picture of President Obama NOT saluting the flag then it just means that he is not going around in a ridiculous permanent salute pose.
      As for the Russians, I think you are referring to Afghanistan where they were fighting not Iraq.
      You might want to think about these things first.

We should have never went into Iraq and at least Saddam would have never allowed Iran to get their present weapons. Wrong from the beginning and to get our Americans out of Iraq is the right decision. Has anyone researched how many Iraqi was killed on regular basis before we entered into this costly war we could not afford, doubt it.

    What Herr Obummer means is not what he says. The first one never should have happened and the second one should have been executed differently.(al Qaeda should have been defeated swiftly and we should have withdrew very soon afterwards). If that’s the way the Iraqis want to fight then so be it.Staying longer will not stop them from doing so and it’s up to their police and military to solve the problem. We never gave a damn about Afghanistan ( except for a water project in the 1930′s) After the Soviets invaded this country we all of a sudden wanted to be their pals with our secret operations. We only used the Taliban to poke the Soviets in the eye.When the Soviets withdrew (after 1 million dead) we also abandoned this country. The weak Afghan govt.(not much left) also collapsed and the Taliban took over. The Taliban were tough as nail fighters but didn’t have a clue on how to run a central government. They allowed all kinds of misfits to set up camp within their borders. Afghanistan became mob rule within each Provence. After 7 years not much has changed and some problems have gotten worse. (bribes,corruption). I’m sure there are some who want us to stay but that would be a good 30 years. We have given Karzi ultimatiums and nothing changes so a better bet would be to get out.

      Obama is now taking credit for what Bush accomplished. Back when Bush proposed the Iraq surge to Congress, Obama was vehemently against it , said it would never work, claimed that it would only cost more American lifes needlessly, and was one of the few congressmen that voted against its funding. After its implementation and success, Bush set a timetable with the Iraqi government for the withdrawl of our troops with the replacement of theirs with expedited training for them. Now that all this has taken place according to Bush’s plan and timetable, Obama is trying to take the credit for it. It appears that Obama wants Bush to have credit for nothing and blame for everything. Obama needs to be reminded that Bush also inherited a 6 month recession from Clinton, but turned the economy around in six months and it boomed for 6 1/2 years after that. Not until 11 months after Bush’s 2nd mid-term election, when the Democrats took majority control of both houses of Congress, did the economy slip back into recession. Congress controls the purse strings of the government, and if the government has any control over whether we are in a recession or not, then its the ones who control the purse strings that determine whether we are in a recession or not. Obama got a Democratic super-majority Congress when he was elected President, but after 19 months as President, the economy is not only not out of the recession, but is headed for a depression with no relif in sight. Obama still blames Bush for the recession, but takes credit for the results of Bush’s surge, plans for withdrawl, and timetable in Iraq. When will Obama ever take any responsibility and CREDIT for the recession?

        check back through past collumns and you will find I laughed about the fact that ford, who didn’t take the stimulus money, posted a profit before either of the ones that did!!! If I remember right, it was right after you cried that if the auto manufacturers hadn’t taken the stimulus money they would have folded! Ford didn’t and they are healthier than both of the ones that took money from the government!

        Oh, you mean the 2 tax cuts, abollishing the marriage penalty, increasing the deductions for children, etc? Gee, it really sound like he was trying to strengthen the economy by giving the average person more money in their pocket. The people have more money, they tend to buy more things. They buy more things, businesses have more money. Businesses have more money, they improve their facilities or hire more workers. They hire more workers, less unemployed Americans on the unemployment line. The less getting unemployment, the less the government (fed and state) have to spend. In turn, they also have more money in the end. All this is what makes the economy go up, not bailouts, forced healthcare, etc. What part of this simple English explination don’t you understand? FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

      Personally, I believe Obama wants to keep our military occupied elsewhere. He certainly doesn’t want hundreds of thousands of patriotic, trained troops around until he can get his national police force (read that: “brown shirts”) in place.
