Farewell To The King Of Pork

July 9, 2010 by

Farewell To The King Of Pork

There’s been a lot written over the past 12 days about the death of Robert Byrd, the so-called “last lion of the Senate.” But the West Virginia senator was no lion despite all the accolades that have been heaped on him since his death. He was a pig. In fact, when it came to grabbing as much government booty as he could, the distinguished senator was the greediest pig of all.

Fox News commentator Fred Barnes put it well when he said, “[Byrd] epitomized what most members of Congress try to do: maximize the flow of Federal funds to their state or district. Only he did it better. He was not only extraordinarily effective in funneling largess to West Virginia; he was unabashed about taking credit for it in an ostentatious way.”

Citizens Against Government Waste denounced Byrd as the “King of Pork.” In 2006, a group called Porkbusters gave Byrd their Lifetime Achievement Award for establishing “a pork record second to none.” Should being the biggest porker of all time really be called an achievement?

There are more than 50 projects in West Virginia—all financed by taxpayers in other states—that are named for Byrd or his late wife Erma. Byrd frequently gloated about how much loot he was able to snare for his state. Here, for example, are his remarks at the dedication ceremony four years ago of the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Center at Marshall University in Huntington: The effort began, he said, “with a visit to my office, yeah! Yeah, man. Yeah, man, a visit to my office, yeah” by the school’s president. So Byrd then proceeded to do what he did best: “I rolled up my sleeves to do the work in Congress to secure the Federal funding. Yeah, man, you’re looking at Big Daddy. Big Daddy!”

As you can see, Byrd loved to brag about how easily he got the Federal spigot turned in West Virginia’s direction: “I’ve been [in the Senate] longer than anybody else… so I added $35.6 million. That ain’t chicken feed. No man, that’s not little stuff. That’s not small stuff.”

Actually, when compared to a Federal budget of $3.8 trillion, and a deficit of $1.3 trillion, that is chicken feed to our big-spenders in Washington. But not in West Virginia, one of the most impoverished states in the union. Which brings up a point I have not heard anyone else make: Why did all those untold billions that Byrd was able to grab for his state do so little good for the people there?

Think about it for a minute. Thanks to Byrd’s efforts, along with a compliant bureaucracy and kowtowing administrations, for most of the 51 years he served in the Senate, West Virginians received more bang for their bucks—that is, more tax dollars back from Uncle Sam than they contributed—than any other state in the union.

If sucking at the teat of Big Government makes you stronger and healthier, why isn’t West Virginia one of the richest states in the nation? Instead, when measured by the jobs its has created, the pay for those jobs, the living standards of its inhabitants, the quality of medical care and education and just about any other standard that’s important to your quality of life, West Virginia is a disaster.

Byrd could serve as a poster boy for the bad effects of big government. Instead, the mass media acted as though there was something good and noble about his life’s work.

Let’s be honest here. Byrd spent the first half of his adult life as one of the most racist, bigoted, downright nasty politicians the South has ever produced. He then spent the second half of his life building monuments to himself with your money.

This is someone we should admire?

Regarding the first part of my accusation, in his youth Byrd was an enthusiastic supporter of the Ku Klux Klan. In fact, when he was 24, he helped form a chapter of the noxious organization in his hometown. He was elected to the state legislature in 1946 and the House of Representatives six years later. In those early campaigns, he made sure he used the “n” word in every speech he made.

Later in life, Byrd claimed to have softened his stance against blacks. But he was still a foul-mouthed bigot. Four years ago, to show how “fair and balanced” he had become, he told a TV interviewer, “I’ve seen a lot of white niggers in my time.” Gee, Senator, how fair-minded of you.

A friend of mine claims that Byrd was the perfect argument in favor of term limits. To prove his point, he says, go to YouTube and watch one of Byrd’s last speeches. You’ll find it here, with a hilarious introduction by Jimmy Kimmel, the late-night television host.

After you watch it, let me ask you: Would you want a 92-year-old surgeon operating on you? Byrd was one of the most skillful transplant surgeons this country has seen. He grabbed money from the other 49 states and transferred it to his own.

For this he will probably always be loved and admired in West Virginia. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that every community in the state is seeking even more Federal funds, to build a statue to their hero.

As for me, I prefer to salute the character of the men featured in this column last week… the incredibly brave patriots who pledged “their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor” to win liberty for us. Click here to see it… and receive your free 4th of July gift from us.

Until next time, keep some powder dry.

Perhaps the people who praise men like Byrd, should more closely examine his life history. Was he not a Grand Cyclops in the KKK? He was very proud of his standing with them, and if he really did drop his membership, that was as transparent as our current president, dropping his membership and association with Pastor Wright and Mr. Farakhan. People apparently love to be associated with criminals and con men, but how can they want their decisions to be perpetually laughed at, or made to seem steeped in ignorance? Mr. Byrd lived a long life, and I am not sure what the rest of you will do, but I am going to leave the judgment to the God which has for so long, blessed and supported our nation. Byrd, Clinton (either one) and a lot of other current Congress folks, are not someone, from whom I would prefer to buy a used car.

    • eddie47d

I’m not a Byrd fan and find the kkk disgusting but that was in his youthful years. He denounced his association decades ago and changed. He should be forgiven for his past transgressions if he was sincere. There is a Congressman in California named Jim Gilcrest who founded the Minutemen MCDC and is affiliated with the American neo-Nazi Party. I bet you agree with some of his political views on immigration but would you condemn him as you do Byrd? Jim has not denounced his affiliation with the NNP. So who should we forgive and move on?

      • Smilee

Forgiveness, is one of the central themes of real Christianity but you can’t find a lot of that on here despite all the “For God and Country” and the like statements from them, I think Hippocrates is the correct term for them!

      • Ms. Jones

ROTFL . . . Smilee, I think you mean “hypocrites”, not “Hippocrates”, who is known as “The Father of Medicine”!

      • Smilee

        YOUR RIGHT!! SORRY ABOUT THAT!

      • Bob Wire

I’ve got it wrong myself smilee, once or twice.

we all work to improve ~ the job unending! ~ and it’s nice to receive occasional help.

      • rwnut

We can’t forgive a mistake like that,so don’t even ask.

      • Smilee

Another person on here totally lacking any character!!!!!!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Forgiveness means, forgive them and let God deal with it. Dont take revenge ourselves, let God do it. But it doesnt mean to turn the other way and let him keep on doing wrong things over and over. In Christiandom, when you see a brother doing wrong, you are to hold him/her accountable for their actions. That is called love. Ive seen the guy talk and listened to the attack and tone’s in his voice, and I may be wrong, but I dont believed he changed a bit. And he did continue to steal right up to the end. That isnt judging, thats a fact.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

And he did use his position to glorify and honor himself, building all these buildings and road and naming them after himself. Sounds kind of satanic to me. Self glorification, taking money from others to glorify yourself. Those are not things of God. Those are things of man. My dad always brought me up, teaching me to “never toot my own horn”. He told me if he ever caught me bragging about myself, I would be on the bench. He taught me that if your really that good, others will sing praise for you. Well, Ive seen Byrd sing his own praises all over the state of West Virginia, but Im not hearing any people brag him up, and I dont see any good results in the standing of the people of his state for all the years he ran it. No, they are worse off than they were when he arrived, and that is a huge testament to his being.

  • Ron…

  • BrotherPatriot

Yes, once again…Thank you Mr. Chip Wood for writing what needs to be said.

I was angry when I learned that Obummer asked for the Flag to be at half mast for Byrd. He doesnt’ earn our respect…just our revulsion and discust due to his methods, attitude and policy. (Oh…I guess we can lump Barry Soetoro, his administration and everyone else who is on it as well…into that category…go figure. Birds of a feather…)

    • eddie47d

George Bush did many disgusting things in his political career and so did Bill Clinton but they both deserve a decent burial and our flag at half staff. Even Nixon deserved that.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Please elaborate about Bush. You have the right to not like him, or to not like his politics, but please elaborate, as to what “disgusting” things he did. Now Clinton, yes, the man was a sexual pervert. But I cant find anything Bush did that was disgusting. You may not like war, but its not disgusting. It needed done. So what was it?

      • Smilee

The Iraq war, he invaded a country that was of no danger to us the first and only time we have done that!! Many of our finest died for this blunder to say nothing about the thousands that will have to live out their life disabled. That perversion tops Clinton’s by far. Oh and don’t tell me he did not know that, He did and he lied about it. When Clinton lied nobody died, now did they!!

  • J J Jacobs

Thank you for a good article revealing the truth, it should be told.

  • OtherTim

I never voted for Byrd, feeling the same way as many others in the country about his spending. WV does finally have some decent roads and other facilities, but still ranks at or near the bottom for health, education, jobs, declining population, income, etc. The young people leave the state after finishing school, bc jobs are not here. That is partially due to state tax structure against small business, they can’t seem to figure that out. Sad part is, that Byrd will still get a LOT of votes come next election. If it were held today, he would probably win. As a transplant, I guess I never saw the attraction. I really lost repect for him when at the last minute he withheld a speach asking for Clinton to step down after his impeachment.

  • Bobk90

The upcoming Election, as with all the others in the recent past, are nothing but a scam to keep Elitists power regardless of party!!! These PIGS, I mean these so-called Honorable Politicians, will never stop what is happening in our government!
The only real change that will ever get us change is this: That we take up arms as the Constitution mandates us to do, when the government stops listening to the people!!
A Clean sweep of ALL FEDERAL LAWS that are currently on the books and the supposed Representatives of People taken out of office! Start fresh with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, MANDATORY TERM LIMITS for ALL THREE(3)BRANCHES of Government. The Constitution does not say anywhere that Supreme Court Judges are be LifeTime appointments, the Constitution simply states that: …”The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour”… That statement in the Constitution does not,by any means, equal to Life Time appointments. It means that they can not hold the judgeship if they are criminals.

    • BrotherPatriot

You speak alot of truth here…however, we are attempting to make the change in our system legally. We do NOT want them to enact martial law because once they do…our new Civil War will be on with a great loss of life and much horror…and most likely we would be joined by alot of our Military as there are many true patriots there…believe that or not. If it must come to the Ammo/Powder box…then Americans will stand up as one if needed…but we don’t want this to happen unless it’s our absolute last resort.

Yes…Byrd was a criminal supported and stupporting other criminals. We definately need term limits…he’s a great source to argue for this.

      • eddie47d

Every single state has Senators and Govenors who beg Washington for money and have since the beginning of our nation. I never liked Byrd that much but he only did what every state does. Some are just better at it.To get you all fired up ,which doesn’t take much,I’d like to bring up Sarah Palin. Alaska gets back $1.80 for every dollar they send in to Washington which are used on a variety of projects. Does that make Palin or ex-Senator Stevens criminals and in bed with other criminals. Were they just doing their job or ripping off other states as this site has accused Byrd of doing. Shelby of Alabama could also be brought up and used in future elections since the Republican side has their share of waste and “corruption”. You all act like Hyhenas circling those “evil” Democrates and slander everthing they propose. Do you really want a unified Country with all your derogatory remarks on everything? I think Not!

      • Ms. Jones

Eddie, I have been saying all along that ALL incumbents need to be sent home and replaced by people who read and understand the Constitution; that is to say, the federal government is granted specific, enumerated powers, and the rest remain with the state and the people. Criticizing one Democrat does not make one a Republican supporter. Here is the solution I propose:

Term limits: 12 years maximum for both houses. In other words, two Senate terms, six House terms, or a combination thereof.

Equal protection: Any law enacted must apply to all citizens equally. In other words, no special handouts to minorities, or majorities for that matter. AND, any law Congress passes must apply to them and their families as well. Notice they exempted themselves from Obamacare, for example. This law would be retroactive, so that ALL government employees, would be thrown into the social security system. That should solve the problem of raiding the SS cookie jar to pay for government boondoggles.

Retired congresspersons would be prohibited from lobbying Congress for a period of twelve years. By that time, all the “buddies” they served with would be retired. Ask yourselves, why would anyone spend millions of dollars to gain a job that pays less than $200K?

Finally, any pay raise Congress votes in for themselves would not take effect until the following session. This would give outraged voters a chance to “retire” greedy congresspeople who overstep their bounds.

      • JeffH

Thank you Ms. Jones, I’ve been thinking along the lines of a 12 year term limit also and could get behind your other suggestions as well.

      • American Citizen

If the states didn’t have to send so much money to Washington to begin with, they wouldn’t have to beg, borrow or steal. The whole system needs to be revamped, whittled down, and only given what is absolutely for the security of this country. The jobs were never mean to be lifetime jobs and I think most of the time they spend up there is worthless. Look at the immigration and jobs problems, both of which this administration have shown to be clueless as to how to handle, as well as the oil spill in the Gulf. Most of our problems were created by the government in the first place.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        american Citizen,
What ever happened to “expense accounts” being for actual business expenses? I’m real sure that Ms P-lousys booze bill for one flight of 20,000 dollars was a bonafied business expense. Or her yearly bill for her private 747 for trips back and forth to California at nearly 3/4 of a million dollars was neccessary expense. I say we give them a set amount and don’t go over it! The rest comes from their own pocket!

      • Claire

JoeH–Politicians shouldn’t even have any business expenses. Let them ride the damn bus or train, or walk to work. Americans are paying for their black SUVs and limos. Another thing to mention, if a president flies to different states stumping for his cronies, he should fly on a regular plane at his own expense or the party’s expense, not ours. Talk about abusing privileges. Let them pay for their own hotel rooms, lunches, dinners, booze, and entertainment just like the rest of us do. Just think about the fabulous pension they receive, and the rest of the “perks” when they leave office. How many politicians have truly earned these perks? The way I look at it, a person gets paid for doing a good job, and if they don’t do a good job, then they receive less pay. Politicians should be no better than the average working person. Heck, I truthfully don’t think they work near as hard as we do. Look at all the time off, recesses, etc.
Look at the Wall Street Execs, the Bank CEOs, the head honchos of insurancce companies. The money they make is clearly over the top. I started to say they weren’t/aren’t that good at their jobs, but I guess they are good—- at screwing the American public.

      • kate8

Yeah, like Pelosi’s $100,000 plus per week to fly back and forth from SF to DC on her private, booze-stocked jet.

      • Claire

kate8–Yes, and like Obama using Air Force One to stump for his buddies. I don’t care who is POTUS, this is not ethical. They all have done it. It just seems like Obama has done a bit more of it.

      • kate8

This is the most blatantly corrupt and arrogant administration I’ve observed in my lifetime. They don’t even try to hide it.

      • Claire

kate8–No, they don’t try to hide it!! Unbelievable. They are doing what they damn well please. Almost like rubbing our faces in it!

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Claire,
I agree 100% but even giving them a set amount would save a hell of a lot of money. This thing of unlimited amounts is rediculous!

  • Bob Wire

We normally attempt to speak of the departed in positive and flattering terms. So once again. FoX, just keeps giving.

    >>”There are more than 50 projects in West Virginia—all financed by taxpayers in other states—that are named for Byrd or his late wife Erma. Byrd frequently gloated about how much loot he was able to snare for his state”<<

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that what he was sent to capital hill by the people of West Virginia FOR? To represented their state and the people of West Virginia?

Texas could use such a man! But I accept the notion Texas has had it's day in the sun with men the caliber of Lyndon Johnson, John Hightower and Loyd Benson. Now we are whittled down to butt boys and door stops like Kay B. Huggison.

I'm proud for the people's of West Virginia and envy them of such a man as the Late Senator and saddened of their loss.

For as Texas will attest, They are hard as hell to find and replace.

The question before us today is ~ are we ushering in and demanding a new breed of politician? And if so, ~ what is to be the dynamics, the driving forces they must contend with? Who's to be in loudest their ear?

I think this article most unbecoming ~ pampering to the lowest common denominator of the Media viewers, attempting to instill confusion and install a ring in their nose with a lease gripped in the hands of "special interest"

    • BrotherPatriot

Anyone who thinks Byrd did a good job is either uneducated or in cohoots with the NWO/Bilderberg Virus. Byrd’s form of government is coming to an end. America is waking up to the global Elites and were rather angry at what they have been attempting to do.

Things are about to Change & I thank GOD this movement has finally begun. America is saying NO to the NWO…!!!

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Barb Wire,
You have just shown your true colors when you praise such a racist as Byrd!!!! Do you also praise the KKK???

      • Bob Wire

Byrd grew to be what he was, he started out like all of us do! stupid!

I am willing to overlook transgression, especially if they occur early in ones life. Byrd made atonement and it’s between him and the All Mighty at this point. Isn’t that the way it suppose to work?

Should we not Judge only in such a manner that we might wish to be judged?

Is there any among his piers void of such transgression, private or public?

Since Byrd is not here to defend himself, making him “easy picking” for Fox Noise as they accuse the old fox of being a very apt and able politician for his constituents of West Virginia. ~ He stands guilty as charged!

Would we like him better and think more of him if he’d served his tenure in a less effective manner?

The old man was a winner! lived a full life is the service of country while competing inside a system that he alone did not create.

can’t you accept that? ~ That the system is failing us today ~ address the failures of the frigging “SYSTEM”! and quit trash mouthing a dead man.

      • sylvia

I have been in West Virginia on several work-related times . Now haveing said that, all I saw was fine ROADS yes STRAIT UP AND STRAIT DOWN, ALL he towns were UN-INCORPERATED whatever that means. Signs that said NO WHERE WV, and all I could see was maybe a barn or some out building than a sign saying now leaving NO WHERE WV. So what did MR BYRDE spend all the BIG BUCKS on?????? And YOU support the KKK I supposed that you also support the NEW BLACK PANTHERS TOO.Hell VOTE them in to your senate, that would make MR.BYRDE real HAPPY.

      • kate8

I think some of them already are in the Senate, and House, too.

      • Vicki

        Bob Wire writes:
“Byrd grew to be what he was, he started out like all of us do! stupid! ”

Speak for your self please. You certainly do not have enough to speak for us that way.

As to Byrd and the system he did not create the reference standard is Ron Paul. There is a leader trying to show the way back to government within Constitutional limits. No whining about having to “buck” the system.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Barb Wire,
when a man spends over half of his life PUBLICALLY doing wrong, then never says in public “I was wrong”, you bet your azz I don’t forget or forgive!

      • Claire

JoeH–Forgive and forget are noble words. However, when the issue at hand goes on and on without regard to the consequences, then it becomes an issue that cannot be forgiven nor forgotten.

    • meteorlady

I’m pretty dang sure that you are not a true born and raised Texan. Our state is doing pretty well considering we only get about 80% of our tax dollars back that we pay into the federal government. Also, If we needed people like Bryd I would be gone in a heart beat. Agree though Kay – she needs to retire and get out of the way for someone with more balls and ethics.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

And of all these millions of pork money year after year that Robert Sheets Byrd steered West Virginia’s way, the state is still in dire straights. They have a high illiteracy rate, high unemployment, and far, far too many people dependant on the government handouts. Oh yeah, I guess that would explain how he kept getting re-elected, by keeping people down and in their place, and dependant on the government. It never helps the people get better, it just keeps them down and in their place, just like the democrats want them. Maybe someday folks will wake up, and quit thinking they are helping them, when in fact they are handcuffing them, and actually, holding them down and keeping themselves in power over them.

Term limits begin and end at the BALLOT BOX. As they said in the

Took a while, but it worked, didn’t it????

  • Bruce Eden

I wish that they would bury these politicians upside down so that when you go to dig up dirt, the shovel goes right up where it belongs.

  • mavis

WHY DO WE LET OLD SENILE MEN AND WOMEN STAY IN CONGRESS. REGARDLESS OF TERM LIMITS THERE SHOULD BE A RETIREMENT AGE. ONLY THE SUPREME COURT IS A LIFETIME POSITION AND THAT SHOULD HAVE AN AGE LIMIT NO ONE SHOULD BE NOMINATED BELOW THE AGE OF 60 AND A RETIREMENT AGE OF 75. KAGAN &
SOTOMYER SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED AND EVERYONE ELSE
WHO IS BELOW 60. THEY NEED TO BE CONFIRMED ONLY IF THEY ARE WILLING TO UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION AND IF THEY DON’T THEY
    SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!!!!!MEHPENSACOLA,FL

    • Ruby

Well…that’s their main purpose (to interpret the Constitution); and that’s why they go through the confirmation hearings, etc. They still are confirmed…go figure.

    • Ms Hale

You’re right about Sotomayer because she’s a racist against white Americans.
And right about people who are getting too old to serve effectively.
What’s worse is that once they leave office they get paid the same salary for the rest of their lives. Imagine how much $$$ we would save if that was eliminated. Same for X presidents. They are all rich before they enter office, have lucrative careers afterwards, why should we continue to pay them?

      • meteorlady

Everyone that says they “get paid” their same salary for the rest of their lives is wrong. Please google this and find the answers for yourselves but I can say this: they have a retirement plan just like corporations offer their employees, they must be vested for at least five years before collecting. They pay into these plans with their own money. The senator has the same retirement and the postal worker. Oh, and they do pay into SS.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        meteorlady,
the part about them paying into SS is correct but only in the recent past. Before they didn’t pay and could collect just like anyone that did!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Actually, what Ive read, is that they get paid much more. Ive read that once they have served the two terms in congress, they have a pension of like 260,000.00 a year for life. The arent paid that much when they are working.

    • eddie47d

I believe Byrd was to old and not sharp enough to handle crucial issues. Ben Franklin was 70 years old, would you feel the same way about him? Thomas Jefferson served 40 years to his Country and Henry Lee served 18 years for Virginia. It’s what a person has upstairs that counts not age. We are now living longer and senior have more to give as they age.

      • Meg

You are right on….age is not the problem. Experience in life, good knowledge and education, although life is an education in itself. Honesty is very important regarding any office you might hold. Men and Women who are able to work together to make America better!
God Bless America….I truly am glad to be an AMERICAN!

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Meg,
there was a supreme court justice that later on in his career slept through cases and still made decisions on them. When asked about it he said why do I have to be awake? I know what my ruling will be!!! Lets hope you never have to go before a justice like that! If he is too old to remain awake, then he is too old to be on the bench. I forget his name but perhaps time or JC can remember him.

That is simply republican rhetoric, they are finding almost none voted certainly not enough to make a difference to change the outcome. Hennepin county the largest county in the state was accused of letting almost 500 felons vote when the county attorney investagated and found only 28 of them to be suspect and it is yet to be proven about these 28, other counties are finding out the same is true. This is the republicans trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill and claim a problem where none clearly exists, Typical republican tactic. Oh, and Frankin’s mind is no match for you to comprehend as he is far too intelligent for you to understand!

Politics corrupted by desire for power not Capitalism. Capitalism is an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.

There is NO connection between the corrupt spending habits of our politicians and Capitalism.

I cast my vote against him in June in the primary. Unfortunately, he got about 70 percent of the vote. His campaign war chest is in the multi-millions. His primary opponent only had about $30,000 to spend. BTW: Shelby’s a former Democrat and I consider him a RINO. I would love to see him out of office.

In the case of Dicks, the money went to a contractor without any others bidding on the project. Nice to know they can use under the table tactics to still funnel the money to their contributors.

Yes Smilee, the truth is all over on this site. If you choose not to see it, well, thats between you and God, and you can sort that out later. But to those of us who dont live our lives with an agenda, and seek the best for this country and for our lives, we know the truth when we hear it, and we see destestable behavior from our leaders when we see it. And when we see our so called # 1 leader, offer no solutions, no plan, no course of action, just keep spending money and attempting to buy future votes for his party, and doing the things he does to weaken this country, it upsets us greatly, because we truly love this United States of America. We dont believe in giving comfort to the enemy, and buying them lawyers. We dont believe in footing the bill for criminals that illegally enter this country. We dont believe in telling an enemy we are fighting as to when we are leaving. We dont believe in being part of the problem, standing there pointing fingers and placing blame, we believe in rolling up the shirt sleeves, getting to work and being a part of the solution. We dont believe in sucking live living babies out of their mothers womb, and then even using America tax payers money and funding it in third world countries. We dont believe in getting in bed with anti Americans like George Soro’s, and owing him favors that are detrimental to the United States of America. We dont believe in embracing the muslim religion that has sworn to destroy us. We dont believe in this stuff he is doing, because in all truth, it is not in the best interests of the United States of America and it’s people, and that is who this community organizer was elected to represent, but it seems he representing all but us. That is the problem. The facts of the truth are there, if you would take off your left wing liberal biased blinders and examine the facts. The truth will set you free. It’s kind of ironic that the republicans would accent Byrd’s KKK past when they use racism as part of their party outreach. Of course they like to claim that this is not the case by picking prominent blacks to fill high profile spots….the trouble is they pick uncle tom blacks who sell out their own race for a chance to be with the big boys. Clarence Thomas was a good example. I can’t imagine the republican party going to bat for him with his shady, Anita Hill harrassing self, unless of course he was one of the rare breed of blacks that go against their own race in embracing the right wing “silent” racism of the republican party.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Your insert of Uncle Tom shows you to be the racist here. Why is it that people like you, and racist blacks, call an educated Black man who speaks clearly and had morals and direction, an Uncle Tom? And the democrats were against freeing the slaves, remember? And they are all for creating more social agencies to give poor blacks handouts to keep them down and in their place, and you know that is true also. The republicans have done more for black America than the democrats have ever thought about doing. You sir, are the one that appears to be the racist here.

      • Born Conservative

When it comes to the discussion of Slavery – IF YOU google it up, you will find that quite a few BLACKS were actually who owned more slaves than a lot of white folk.

Course, that leads us to Blacks protecting Blacks, in probably the only way left open to them in that Century. Still…….

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Actually, from what Ive read on it, slavery was started by blacks owning other blacks, who then sold them to white Americans who brought them over here, where they actually had it better than when they were owned by black owners in Africa. Thing is, shouldnt we all be Americans? Im tired of the race card, and the playing the victim everytime its convenient, then fall back to what happened 100 years ago. My family immigrated here from Prussia, when Kaiser Wilhelm was taking over everything, and they were wealthy, owned a castle, and had to forfeit everything they had and rather than live in tyranny, they made it here. Now I do not feel for one second that the German people owe me a thing. Those that did this have long died. Those relatives of mine that this was done to are long gone also. I am not a Prussian-American, or a German-American or a Polish-American. No, I am an American. So why can you black folks be Americans? Why claim you want to be accepted and equal, yet set yourselves aside from the rest of America, and insist on calling yourself African Americans? Its stinking silly. Ive been to Africa twice, so Ive got more a right to call myself that than 95 percent of black America. Get over the race thing, quit being a victim, and stand up and be an equal, be an American. A black man is president. A black man is the home run king in baseball. A black man, Lebron James or Michael Jordan, whichever way you lean, is the best basketball player ever. There is nothing that you cannot do or achieve here in the United States, regardless of your skin color. So please stop the racism and playing the dead race card. It is so unbecoming, and all it does is stir racial strife. But as long as guys like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are running around, we will have racial strife, for without it, they wouldnt have a job.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

And I need to add, yes slavery sucked. I am totally against it, and would never stand for it. However, it happened, and now it is gone, so lets get over it. I am a Christian, and Christianity went through what was called the dark ages, when they were misleading themselves and killing everyone who they deemed wasnt a Christian. They realized it was wrong and went through a reformation, and put this terrible chapter to rest. Does that mean I should keep going back and digging it up, and using it as an excuse whenever it fits? NO. Its over and done with, and its time to live for today. Today may be all we have. We are not promised tomorrow, and yesterday is dead and gone. Learn from it, and go on. When you keep looking back, something just might catch you. Revenge is my says the Lord, so if someone needs to pay for what they did, Im pretty sure He can handle it. But us people on earth need to forgive and forget, and move on with our lives, and quit paying the victim all the time. Its old and tired and worn out.

      • Smilee

Now home come you do not apply that to SENATOR BYRD?

      • kate8

Isn’t it interesting that, while whites run the gamut of the ideological spectrum, democrates think that blacks can only be democrats, as if they own them.

The Republican Party was formed as a party for the freed slaves, and it wasn’t until MLK Sr. made an unholy pact with the JFK administration in order to free his son from the legal system, promising to deliver the black vote, that this changed. Democrats have held them in bondage, slavery, ever since. And of the worst kind: the slavery of the mind.

If blacks attempt to break ranks and think for themselves, they suffer the wrath and ridicule of their “masters”, as demonstrated by Mr. Quigley. They do everything they can to make sure they control their “herd”, and to keep them “in their place”. They are kept believing that they are dependent upon the democrat party.

This is true racism. This is bondage. Thank God that more an more people are beginning to see through this.

        Some things never change.

      • JeffH

kate8, if only more people could understand what you say is the truth. Democrats fear the fact of a more educated African American. The fear is that if African Americans new the Democratic Party takes them for granted they would leave. In the last three elections the Democrats have used fear, pandering, and portraying Republican opponents as racists in order to receive record numbers of African American Votes. We all see it happening, even today. Bill Clinton was a master of black exploitation.
African Americans have elected Democrats for years and Democrats have given lip service to fixing the community’s troubles, yet Democratic mayors and Democratic governors have failed time and time again, yet continue to garner black votes despite blocking some of the most important legislation benefiting the black Community. Polls have shown a majority of African Americans are for school choice, Social Security reform, and against abortion and gay marriage. Most Democrats stand on the opposite side of these issues. Yet, African Americans continue to vote in large numbers for Democrats who consistently fail to deliver needed changes.

      • Bob Wire

Jeff;>>”kate8, if only more people could understand what you say is the truth. Democrats fear the fact of a more educated African American.”<<

There we have it! The only affirmation we need to justify that thinking with a color bias is acceptable and the correct way to think! " If people COULD ONLY UNDERSTAND" says Jeff, ~Jeff, we do understand! We understand how you think and feel. But many of us has accepted our bigotry, faced it head on and know it for what it is. We have disciplined our "thought process" to filter out racial bias. AND IT NOT EASY! So we do understand the battle that's before you and your refuse to confront.

It's much like attempting to think and conduct yourself like a Christian.
IT'S NOT EASY! If it was easy, living as a Christian would be a "snap" an easy road to travel. I find it very hard to live as I was taught, it's something a Christian works hard at everyday. Loving your enemy is so very hard to do. But if you can manage that, the rest does get easier. ~ and every day, I fall from grace, I fall short, but I keep trying.

We all per-judge,~ it's the nature of the mind, as it preforms it's process of assimilating information. We are all predisposed by programming of parents, life experiences and what we consume, take in.

We all have had bad experiences, we all have been exposed to bad programming.

It's for each individual, to clean out some of these old files and corrupt programs that impede personal growth.

        or not.

      • Smilee

Looks like you left them both speechless, funny how the truth sometimes does that, there is a lot of racists in denial on this site. To infer that blacks cannot think for themselves is racism in itself as they think of them as inferior to them. Blacks do think for themselves and came to the conclusion that they wish to vote mostly for democrats.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You are correct my friend. Anyone who cares to look into history, will see the democratic party has not been a friend of the black American. They didnt even want to free them, and fought vehemently against it. Now they have even convinced the NAACP to try to publicly denounce the Tea Party as racist, which couldnt be further from the truth. The only Tea Party organizer I know here in town, just happens to be a black man, who is a very smart guy, very articulate, and a common guy who works for UPS. He know’s the democratic party is not his friend. They have one goal in mind for black America, and that is to keep them dependant on food stamps and welfare, and beholden to the democratic party, so that they can get the black vote, when in fact, all they have done over all these years, is keep blacks down. Maybe real soon, like the election in 2012, when the democrats throw Obama under the bus, and run Hillery, then black America can see what these guys are all about. It just might take that, which is sad, because if one took the time to look into their party and what they have done, they might find out the truth about these guys.

That is your battle to fight, but you see no need! Your thoughts self validating! The battle to never be fought and you will never change.

      • kate8

BW, I’m not sure what you were babbling about there, but I still maintain that it’s the democrats who think in terms of color. On a BIG scale. It is they who work to divide us along these lines, by forming caucuses and other racial groups, inciting anger over historic grievences, promoting blame toward whites (quite openly) and causing distrust among everyone. And then on top of this, the government gives them all money to move into predominately white neighborhoods in order to create more tension. They did this for POWER through division. So, of course, people are suspect of those whom they do not share common ground.

Why are blacks ridiculed and called “Uncle Toms” by your ilk when they align with conservative thinking, if not for purposes of keeping them in line? It’s how liberals operate to control everything.

Conservatives, just like people of all pursuasions, prefer to live and congregate among those of like mind. You libs only accept minorities if they think like you, so why would you expect us to be any different? Conservatives accept people of other ethnicities with open arms when they come our way, without the condescension and “ownership” mentality that libs exude.

You libs are so obsessed with race that you can’t see past it. You are the ONLY ones who bring it up in a negative way, and you just can’t get beyond it because it is a tool for you.

More and more minorities are catching on to this, and we conservatives welcome them gladly. And not just for votes, but because we truly desire liberty for all.

Well Bob, Its kind of ironic in a way as the Democrats do in fact come looking for {Young Blacks and Hispanic’s,} how do I know that?

I am one, it was a Democrat who came to enlisted me he was a Black Democrat who explained how they and only they could help me along.
At a young age and having little backround in the overall grasp of how politic’s worked and even less in real history based on the lacking Education I had.
Thats even having my Master at age 20, so as it were, Bob I may not have the highest IQ ever but lets be real Bob how many people do you know that had their Master’s from an Ivy League at age 20?

It was not until I was in the UK at age 25 that I met a group of people who opened my eyes and yet I still couldn’t fathom that the KKK was started by democrats or that they hated me, or that democrats were holding back people that were Black, Hispanic as well Japanese, Chinese etc.
I could not graps that these very people were raciest and that they were using me as a tool.

I was 32 years old when I woke up 100%. So if your really an American Native then I have to ask why it is you have taken the easy road? Your far better than that.

Do you really feel that people who find you repugnant and would kick you in a hole and shoot you in the head as fast as they could truly like you?
Its very clear that the progressive marxist hate all of us of color.

Can’t you grasp that, my god man you make many post where I can see that you do have good solid electric sparks, so I have to ask why are you aiding the Progressive Marxist who want you around as much as the plague?

I understand that there are progresives in the Republican party too, but they are very few in number. Compare that with the fake rhetoric of 80% of the Democrats.
Do you really think that Joe Lieberman thinks your ok? How about John Kerry? John Edwards, Nancy PigOsee, or Waxman? They hate you and I.

Do you really think they care one dam bit about you? If you do they your only kidding yourself, just like I did for years.
I thank God I awoke from my stupor.

I ask you to please take the hate you have for anyone who’s not a Democrat out of your thinking for just a few moments and Ask God to forgive you and let you see clearly.

I am not a Christian per sa’, but I understand what they think and how they feel. Let me be clear if Christ were here today I would stand at his side. So don’t let the few who are bad Christians taint you into thinking all are the same.

Really dude, keep in mind my real father was 100% Mohawk, I was broght up by a American Japanese Family by the way who lost everything during WW II and yet they did not hate Americans, they were Americans and loved this land as their own.
JFTR – both my mother and father left me before I was even 2 years old. I am a true American MUT, and very proud to say I am an American.

      • kate8

TIME, it is so frustrating that we cannot have honest conversations about race because of the way democrats use it as a weapon. It just serves to keep us divided when we have to tiptoe around the truth.

No one want to associate with people who are angry, who resent and hate them and even want to kill them, regardless of color. Yet, this is exactly what the left has fomented over the years, and then screams racism when we recoil from this. We are all interested in self-preservation and living in a comfortable, harmonious environment among people we understand and with whom we can form bonds.

People always congregate and form communities among those who are like themselves. Just look at how differing cultures have taken over whole cities in the US, and have driven Americans out to seek refuge among other Americans in other areas. It’s considered acceptable for everyone except us. And it is getting increasingly more difficult.

On the other hand, it is most wonderful to live among those who are friendly, accepting, respectful, considerate, caring and neighborly.
Those whom we can trust. It is these things that are sorely lacking today, among all people. These are the things that most of us, as conservatives, value above all else.

BTW, your posts are always thoughtful, insightful and enlightened. You are in a position to open the eyes of many. And I am sure you do.
We will all, as lovers of liberty, stand shoulder-to-shoulder to bring down this insidious enemy who is very close to destroying all of us.

        God bless.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

In response to Time’s post: God bless you man. I agree with your post totally. And Im tired of the democrats presenting all others as racist, and that they alone are the friend of the blacks and hispanics. When in fact, it is there total direction, to give these groups little government handouts, and keep them dependant on the government, and keep getting their votes. And its a shame these two groups fall for their misleading propaganda bull crap. And if one really wants to talk about a group being racially prejudiced against, then we definately need to bring the American Indian into this, as they are the one, the only one, who has truly been screwed over by their own country. The blacks here have a better life than they had in Africa, the hispanics have a better life here than they had in Mexico. But the American Indian, this is their land, and they had everything taken from them, while be relagated to living on a Reservation, and to me, they are still being taken advantage of today. Our government and white man has screwed them since the time we arrived here, and I think its high time for a national apology, and some kind of attempt to make it right, even though you cannot ever erase what they did to them. Truth be told, Blacks and Hispanics know nothing about prejudice, unless they walk in the shoes of the American Indian. Then they just might learn something. Peace to you my friend.

Well, mr. Quiggle, if it were not for the repubs., the civil rights bill would have never passed. Byrd voted against it as did a lot of other democrats. Anita Hill was a liar anyway.
But this is typical for dissatisfied blacks. If the black guy is a republican, or a conservative, he is obviously an Uncle Tom. I suppose you support the New Black Panther Party as well.

    • Ruby

I agree with Beberoni and Bogusbob – YOU are the racist. Why would you bring it up, if that isn’t the way you think and conduct your every day life. I have a neighbor that only talks about the racist experiences he has throughout his day…hmmmmmm…I wonder why. Well…perhaps he wakes up wondering who will find offense that he’s black. I don’t know how many times I’ve told him to stop thinking that way, and that us non-blacks (I’m hispanic) TRULY don’t think that way.

I’ve commented before that whoever plays the race card first is indeed the racist.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

And I would like to add this about racism. When I graduated high school in 1976, affirmative action was in high swing. I went to over 15 business’s, who all told me, and told me right to my face, that they couldnt hire me because I was white. Now I dont care who you are, that is racism with a capital R. Yet I had no one to champion my cause, no one to turn to, and I couldnt play the victim, nor would I. I didnt need to. I was on the verge of becoming a man, so it was time to start acting like a man. So I took my only alternative at the time, and I joined the military, learned a trade, and after my 4 years I got out and Ive worked successfully ever since. No need to play the victim or the race card, and walk around saying woe is me so and so is out to get me. Why defeat yourself? Stand up and be man, and dont worry about what color your skin is. There are successful blacks, hispanics, whites, jews, Indian, orientals, and every walk of life. There are also failures in every race, color and creed. But to make yourself a victim and cite your skin color for it, is a cop out that is old and worn out, and needs to go away, and the sooner the better not only for all of us, but for that person even more so.

    • Ms. Jones

Richard, I dispute your contention that the Republican party uses racism as an official outreach or plank in their platform. Yes, as evidenced herein, there are plenty of conservatives making some truly ugly racial slurs on this forum, but please don’t tar us all with the same brush! I personally believe everyone is created in the image of Almighty God, and therefore worthy of dignity and respect. I echo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for a color-blind society where a man or woman is judged by the content of his/her character, and not by his/her complexion. If you read each post carefully, you will find that there are thinking, rational people on both sides of these arguments, just as there are ignorant, name-calling people in both camps. I read a post on this forum yesterday where a very sincere-sounding Liberal suggested that 95% of blacks voted for Obama because he came up from the same poverty and broken home that they did. WOW! Call me on it if I’m wrong, but doesn’t that smack of racism? I mean, to suggest that ALL blacks are poor and from broken homes? That’s an insult to an awful lot of black folks, isn’t it? And doesn’t it reek of that Liberal attitude that social programs are necessary because “these people” can’t take care of themselves properly? As an independent thinker, I will vote for anyone–black or white, male or female–whose views and policies closely mirror my own. In other words, someone who represents me. Shouldn’t all people, even minorities, be extended that same freedom? To suggest that black Americans should march in lock step in support of Obama because he is black seems to be a subtle kind of enslavement or racism, at least in my view.

      • JeffH

Ms. Jones, well said as usual and very true. That is all any of us should want.

      • kate8

        Ms. Jones, very well said.

It’s just another way progressives control all of the poor, making them believe that they are victims who cannot survive without them. It’s a way of keeping them angry, explosive and permanently “downtrodden”. And for the sole purpose of keeping them in power.

All men have the capacity to better their lot, if given the liberty to do so. And it is only by doing this themselves that they gain self-respect and appreciation for liberty. Yet, democrats treat the poor, and especially the black poor, like they don’t have the capacity on their own. How insulting. How condescending. How racist.

      • Bob Wire

        >>”Yet, democrats treat the poor, and especially the black poor, like they don’t have the capacity on their own. How insulting. How condescending. How racist.’<<

So true! kate8 ~ that this happens is sad and needs to be offered resistance. That it's exclusively democrats, all or some ~ I'd disagree with you.

      • kate8

Perhaps so, BW. But it is the conservative ideology to allow everyone the opportunity, through freedom, to succeed or fail on their own.

No one is going to offer opportunity to those who resent or hate them. But anyone with a real willingness to embrace the idea of excellence and move forward in their life will find doors opening to them. It’s just the law of the universe. No good ever comes from being angry, resentful and blaming.

All peoples on the Earth have suffered oppression and indignities somewhere in their history. My ancestors were slaughtered at the hands of the Romans, yet I don’t expect a check from Rome. All that really matters is who we are today, and having the freedom to come to better thinking.

The world will not be made better through hate, anger or force. It will be made better through love. Love is the glue that binds all life, and anything else leads only to destruction.

      • JeffH

kate8, with all the well thought comments that BW sometimes displays, his liberal negative side is quite glaring…the accusations of hate and racism are nothing more than the extension of the liberal rhetoric. BW is all to often a Jaberwocky in disguise.

        True, so true!!!!

      • meteorlady

You will never have a truly color blind society until the likes of Jesse, Al, and others stop defining races. They make their livings off of keeping us separate and giving excuses to minorities for failures. Most have made their way in this country by taking advantage of their educational benefits, learning to live within the system and working hard. The Jesse and Als of the world say they are “poor” because they are discriminated against. The rest of us just put our heads down and work hard to over come obstacles and make better lives for ourselves and our children. If they preached unity and education and rolled up their sleeves and actually did something for their communities instead of the constant search for publicity maybe things would be different.

      • kate8

        Amen, meteorlady.

      • Claire

        And double Amen.

      • Judy Mimranek

I also agree. I have said many times that anyone who wants to succeed can. I sat in the same classrooms as many other people of several different races and they got the same education I did. If they didn’t recieve it whose fault is that? You can’t open someones head and pour it in whether they want it or not. Sometimes I wish they could because it would have made it a lot easier for me ! I worked hard for every “C” I got ! Even some “D’s” ! It boils down to our own attitude. Either you give yourself a good and positive one or suffer the consequences. It matters more , what you think of yourself than what someone else thinks of you. If you think good of you that will spill over and soon others with think good of you too.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

When someone of color runs for office, and over 90 percent of the people of his color vote for him, that speaks large volumes about the level of racism that exists in that race. Can you imagine what the election results would have been if over 90 percent of white people voted for McCain just because he was white? That would definately show a racial problem with white people, and a bad one at that. But we all know that didnt happen, and that it wont happen. There is a race problem going on, but I have to look at the facts, and go elsewhere to find the root of it.

      • Smilee

spin spin spin, How can you be sure they voted for him because he was black or because they sincerely belived he was the best man for the job. Is that just to deep for you to understand. Pathetic attempt Richard. Every single American like Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice made it on their own. They are vexcellent representatives in their chosen professions and deserve their places in history and honor. There are many many people that are leaders in their occupations. Your post would lead me to believe that you are a racist. If someone doesn’t believe in your point of view – then they are racist, bigoted, red neck, uncle toms, bible thumpers, teabaggers or some other derogatory term. Get a life and grow up – this is America and I’m willing to give anyone the benefit of a break without regard to their color.

Most of the “heroes” of American have feet of Clay. MacArthur ordered American Troops to fire on American WWI vets. Most were unarmed

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Where do you get that MacArthur had American troops fired on?

      • Bob Wire

Hmm? ~ A Thomas Mc Arthur Anderson ~~ is the only thing I find even close to such an event. I’ve suffered through Douglas Mc Arthur’s autobiography ~ there was no mention of such.

here’s the only account I find of Thomas Mc Arthur

        >”In the Antietam Campaign:
        Captain Anderson remembered Antietam later:
“… with the Army of the Potomac, marching to meet Lee in Maryland. At South Mountain we were under fire but held in reserve. The Twenty-third Ohio Volunteer Infantry was immediately in our front. I asked a young commissary-sergeant of the Twenty-third who was in command of his regiment. He told me Major Hayes. As he was an old acquaintance I rode forward and spoke to him. As the commissary sergeant was William McKinley, within two minutes I spoke to two men who subsequently became Presidents of the United States.”

“On the afternoon of the 16th of September, while we approached the battle-field of Antietam, some negroes were digging post-holes to the left of the road. When the enemy opened an artillery fire on us these discolored Americans tried to hide in the holes. When, however, some of their shells struck the ground near by and threw showers of dirt over them, they popped out of their holes and sprinted across the field, rolling over whenever a shell exploded. This performance amused our men so, that they seemed to lose all sense of fear. Our brigade marched on and formed line of battle to the left of Sharpsburg with the right resting below the stone bridge. Just before daybreak on the 17th the First Battalion crossed the bridge and took open order just beyond. Later in the day the Fourth and the Fourteenth went over, and this force moved up to the crest of the hill in front of Sharpsburg. Pleasanton’s cavalry crossed over and formed to the right of the bridge. The Third Infantry and the battalion of the Eighth and Twelfth were held in support of the artillery, which was firing on the enemy from our side of the creek. In the afternoon I was directed to detail two men to assist in working the guns. As old Martin Burke had insisted oil training our men in artillery drill, they were able to give most efficient assistance.”

      • http://www.boblivingstonletter.com/ Bob Livingston

        Dear Beberoni and Bob Wire,

In June, 1932, thousands of WWI vets were camped out in Washington, D.C., calling for immediate payment of a bonus they were promised but was set to be paid in 1945. Washington police attempted to remove the demonstrators from the camps but were unsuccessful. Shots were fired by the police and two protesters died and a number of police officers were injured. President Hoover sen the U.S. Army, led by Gen. MacArthur and assisted by Eisenhower and Patton, to stop a march by the demonstrators. Hoover told MacArthur not to move on the camp, but MacArthur ignored the the order and chose to clear out the camp. Hundreds of civilians were injured in the clash. MacArthur said he thought he was fighting a communist revolution.

        Best wishes,
        Bob

P.S. Hoover did nothing to reprimand or discipline MacArthur, prompting Democrat candidate FDR to say of Hoover: “There is nothing inside the man but jelly!”

      • Bob Wire

Thank you Mr. Livingston, for clarify the occasion and jogging my memory. I remember such an event but failed to associate it with Mc Arthur, not his finest hour I would think and a shadowy reminder of a young cannoneer Napoleon.

        Again, much thanks.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Thank you for the clarification. I was not aware of this. I heard that towards the end MacArthur got too big for his own britches, but I didnt realize he went that far.

  • John Russillio

Well said Chip, I’ve long held to the fact that this man was indeed a racist who with his views of the American people held us in contempt. His despicable speech during the Clinton hearings for impeachment was a blow to honesty in our elected officials. Now, who comes to his side to payback but the man who began our government to the present levels but Clinton himself !! His speech recently stated he (Byrd) was young during his membership in the KKK and really wasn’t considered a racist. What a crock !!!! Statues placed in his honor all over West Virgina is another joke to be paid for by the taxpayers of America. Where do we keep those tanks again to help pull them down with big chains then hit them with our shoes???

  • Walter

Senator Byrd and Senator Kennedy were thieves who build monuments to themselves with money stolen from the average legal American taxpaying citizens that they were elected to represent. Both have been revered by the liberal media as icons, this forum is one of the few places where the truth about their despicable actions can be and should be told as a caution against repeating the mistakes fostered by electing men of this corruption to Congress.

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Thank you sir for telling the truth. They built their legacy on using our hard earned money, then taking it for themselves and their glory within their states, to buy votes so that they could rule until they died. Both these guys have done so much damage to their states, as these states have learned to live off of government pork, and have never learned how to function properly and to fend for themselves. I think it is baloney that one state that has officials that run it properly, have funds taken away and given to states that have shown year after year that not only do they have no clue on how to run it properly and efficiently, but that they dont care either. Our Governor Mitch Daniels here in Indiana knows how to run things. He has kept us solvent and ahead of the game, even in this down economy. Yet the democrats in the state want him to take the surplus and blow it, so that in a few years when we need it, it wont be there, then we can apply to the feds to rape other states and get money like Byrd did in West Virginia all those years. The press can write all their lies and change the truth all they want, but Robert Byrd was a self promoting tyrant who did nothing but take money from other places, and glorify himself with what he left behind, with all this stuff named after him. He handcuffed his state, and for all the years he was there, he never made it self efficient, always waiting for the next handout, just like a good democrat. And now our left wing liberal media tries to out and out lie to the public and glorify this leper. Sad part is, there are uneducated simple minded people that think that if you hear it on TV or read it in the newspapers, that it is true, when in fact, it couldnt be further from the truth.

      • Ms. Jones

Well stated, fellow Hoosier! I become livid when people deify Chappaquiddick Ted and Pork Barrel Byrd. These guys used their tenure in the Senate to pick your pocket and mine in order to secure re-election for themselves. Unfortunately, the people who hold the power to limit terms of these Congress “lifers” through the ballot box often relent, telling themselves that their Senator or Congressman is okay because of the pork s/he brings home. The most egregious example of a Representative behaving as if his seat in Congress is his personal throne is Pete Stark, D-CA. Watch the YouTube videos of this guy mocking and disparaging his own constituents, and telling an interviewer to “Get the f*&% out of here before I throw you out the window”. He is the current “poster child” for term limits! I want to send a donation to whoever is running against him this November, but can’t find out who that might be. Anyone here from California?

      • Ms Hale

Yes, I’m from CA. Byrd was a pig on many different levels and the fact he’s dead does not change that. Don’t speak ill of the dead?
At least death stopped him from his illegal and racist activities. Too bad the American people didn’t first. And he was just one cog in the wheel of the destruction of our country.

      • Ms. Jones

Ms. Hale, I was looking for a Californian to point me to whoever is running against Rep. Pete Stark, a congressman cut out of the same cloth as Byrd, Kennedy, et al. I found Chris Pareja, the Independent candidate, whose views closely mirror my own small government, constitutional, libertarian-ish views. The Tea Party out there supports him, as well. I would like to use this forum to briefly point other like-minded conservatives to his web page: ChrisPareja.com. I know times are tough all over, but every dollar helps an independent fighting an uphill battle against an entrenched incumbent with the Democratic machine behind him. Progressives/Liberals: Watch Pete Stark insult his constituents on YouTube, then ask yourself if this is a guy you want representing your views in congress. Is he?

      • JeffH

Ms. Jones…always a good commenter…I thought it would be tough to find a more insensitive individual than Pelosi, but Stark almost makes Pelosi sound good, in a bad way. NAW!

      • Christin

Don’t you guys find it a lot ironic that the Elite (clinton, obama) praise one of their own even when he was a terrible racist, unamiable and rudely outspoken representative in Congress as well as a horrifically selfish person (greed for pork for his state), BUT if it had been one of us we would be labled racist and deemed a Terrorist.

In Chip’s clip Byrd couldn’t even talk or think straight, why was he allowed to run and hold that position. I say good riddens to the last three Demos that died: Myrtle, Kennedy and Byrd. They were very bad for our Republic… ALL three. We are better off. We need Statesmen/ Stateswomen.

I don’t want to play their CLASS system, nor pay them six figures for life when most of us make less while employed and even less when we retire. Laws the Legislature makes for America should apply to all citizens… since when has this changed? Why are THEY above the law? (I’d put hollywood and professional athletes in that group, too.)

The man, when he did get money diverted to W.V., undoubtedly pocketed most of it before anything could be done in his State. I hope all voters in all states will continually shuffle the deck down in Washington. It doesn’t do for anyone to be in office longer than 2 terms at the most.

  • Bobby W.

Yeah, but he also had some damn nice interstate roads built, so the rest of us could pass through the state with ease!

I think not but I see you would vote for someone that could give you a snow job as to his good deeds ! Two wrongs never make a right and it is time we started holding all these people to a much higher standard ! Enough of the excuses for poor Mr. Byrd. He died happy and rich on our money and only had to do a few very public acts to get all you praise. What an idiot !

    • Carolyn

When you really think about it. Do you really think he had the highways built for you? I am not from Byrd’s state but I had read plenty about him. To think he had statues of himself is very creepy. That is what dictators do. Perhaps you should research Byrd’s real history.

  • James

I was critical of Sen. Byrd during his lifetime for many of the reasons mentioned but I think the article is untimely and distasteful because the man’s body is hardly cold yet. It’s also unbalanced for not referring to the many positive things he accomplished.

    • Tom

The article is right on. It could have said he ruled West Virginia with an ron fist. Lawyers and judges made sure his friends won every thieving case they had. The idea that someone should be idealized just because they have passed away is nice for the family at the funeral, but to continue after that is dishonest and continues the lie that he was good for the State of West Virginia.

    • spoonerist

I agree that it is preferrable to avoid speaking poorly of the dead, especially the recently departed. So let us exercise good Christian manners and pray for the salvation of the soul of this racist porker who contributed so much to the decline of freedom in America. Let us pray that his successor will be more inclined to vote for lower taxes, less government, and more individual freedom. Let us objectively expose the harm he has done while still praying for his salvation. And most of all, let us never hesitate to point out the truth about what these corrupt politicians have done to destroy freedom, whether they did it from ignorance, arrogance, or because they were just plain evil. We might not always know which one of these was the cause, but the deleterious effects of their actions need to be recognized and exposed.

I do know what it says VERY loud and clear about your character, all solely based on your mindless post day in and day out.

Can you guess what that is?

Let me explain it to you bubba so your gray matter stays smooth, hey we don’t want to upset the balance of your pretzel logic thinking.

Your ignorance and out right stupidity as well your overt undertones of Vitriol far exceeds anyone here who has studied history.

Of what its quite obvious your grasp of history is not much deeper than the prize in a box of Cracker Jacks.
Thus that makes you an ignorant fool who would follow blindly into that good night any PIG that gave you a carrot, no matter what the end result, as your only interest is in the cheep fake gold bobble.

Thus that makes you part of the problem – A progressive TOOL.

WOW, you must be really pissed to write such garbage that has no response what so ever to my post, just pure ranting and raving spewing out pure hate and a bunch of lies, I guess that clearly defines your character or rather the lack of character as you certainly have none, your just a confused, frustrated, angry and hateful person making so sense to those of us who are not and who are actually knowledgeable and your saying otherwise is nothing more than another of your lies.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Of all the posts I read in here, you sir, are the king of attack. You attack any and everyone who has an opinion different than yours. Im glad you differ from me, and me from you, thats what creative discussion is all about. But when you attack constantly, and I myself fall for it also, others want to attack you back. Thats because were dumb humans inside, and we are all fallen men. But I do find that most of your posts, are direct out of the democrat left wing liberal think tank, that we should all think and do as you say, because you know what is best for all of us. I dont need someone to think for me, and tell me what I should think. Evidently though, the democratic voters do.

You would have to experience W. Virginia and the adjunct poverty and poor healthcare before you sing the praises of Bryd. The go look at the public works projects that are named after him. He spent his life hating blacks, and hid that bigotry for political reasons later in his life. He was just another senile politician that refused to give up power to someone more competent and able to perform the job with a clear head.

    • Judy Mimranek

Bundy did a lot of positive things in his lifetime too but that doesn’t change the fact that he was a murderer and a creep !

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

I dont think he is going to get cold anytime again pal.

  • Doc Sarvis

I’ll hand it to Sen. Byrd on one count; he did call it right on our invasion of Iraq.

    • BigD GottaGoTell It, Minnesota

He Did Get the Iraq War Thing Right- I Agree.

Not One of Us Here Lives & Learns

      Self Righteous Pharisees or Neo-Cons!

You Gotta Go Right to Experience ‘Self-Rightiosity’

      • kate8

        Sounds pretty self-righteous to me.

    • Judy Mimranek

Guess what , I called it right too and it didn’t cost you a dime . I won’t give him anything, he was a jerk !

    • http://donthaveone Beberoni

You mean when him , along with money others on the left, stood up there before congress, and way before George W. Bush was even a candidate for president, and declared how Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and was dangerous and had to be stopped? Is it that call you are talking about. Because I viewed and heard him, Hillery, Dean, Kerry, Billy, and many others all cry out out this guy has WMD’s and needed to be stopped, and this was WAY, WAY, before Bush was even a candidate for president. Then you all attempt to rewrite history and blow the way the wind flows. Boy it is so easy when you lie about things, isnt it? Your as bad as him. He was the king of the rip off, the king of taking what wasnt his and making it his. The king of patting himself on the back and glorifying himself on earth. Much like this guy named Satan. He seeks to do the same thing. Shame on you for your lying and attempt to rewrite history.

      • Smilee

Your the one re Writing historuy in this case!!!!!!!!

Americans believe that if they aren’t aware of greed/incompetence, it can’t exist. If it did exist, then our leaders would jump on it and solve the problem in a heartbeat.
Most people who wind up in Washington know there’s America, and there’s Washington. Our leaders learn quickly that there’s job security, and there’s the ‘truth’ (Americans will believe almost anything, if it’s ‘packaged’ properly).
Career criminal politicians are more hype than substance. When Bubba Clinton can find ways to see all of the good and none of the bad in Byrd’s career, it amounts to career criminals protecting each other.
They have a great thing going, as long as voters don’t get in the way. And, as we all know, as long as ‘leaders’ get to live like unaccountable kings and queens, then the system “works” (just don’t let anyone take a serious look at that system, let alone try to change “perfection”).
People, keep that damned political deck of cards SHUFFLED. NO MORE CAREER POLITICIANS. Politicians make life complicated, and our collective stupidity keeps us in chains. No casino and no criminal ever had a better deal than a career American politician.

    • Christin

Well said… they have played us… we had confidence they would do the right thing and they have used us instead.

Since when is it the congressmen’s job just to spend taxpayer dollars… I thought they were suppose to lead and once in a great while write laws to correct society’s legal system that are SHORT so they can’t hide their PORK and evil agenda.

Congress isn’t even writing the new laws… the Apollo Alliance is… isn’t that unconstitutional?????????????????????

      • kate8

Only if you’re assuming they give a rip about the Constitution.

They’ve made it plain that they don’t.

    • Emma

Why the length of their terms is not changed to at the most 2 consecutive terms is really beyond me! All I can say is that I’m never going to vote for an incumbent again. Keeping the deck shuffled is perhaps the only way to go about it for us until and unless we get what we put these greedy people in office for because once they’re in office, they do what they want for themselves and forget about the people. Get rid of them as often as possible is what I say and don’t give them any opportunities to build personal fortunes on our money.

  • Anthony

Right Arm, Farm Out, and “Out Of State”…. as we used to say back in the 1970′s.

Robert “Sheets” Byrd was (and should always be considered) a Hypocrite.

He talks about seeing “white niggers” all over the place… HA….

He should know – his hand was out every day of his life… always looking for that free ride… ….”takes one to know one”.

And, the little-educated in West Virginia certainly knew when to kneel, eh?

Good Article, as always, Chip! Keep ‘em coming.

Its pretty easy to butcher someone that is DEAD, & has a long standing in the Govt arena. He who is without sin, cast the first stone. But let me tell you, he was a great friend of mine. He made it the hard way, & lived a good long life. But he always did what he could for W Va. & was a good hearted man. Leave him alone. Some of you self righteous folks out there make me sick. For Petes sake, let him rest in peace. Some of you will not be spoken about much better that you are dishing out. Now, give the man a break, LOL, cause you sound pretty stupid !!!!

      • gene

The mans history speaks for itself. He was a racist from the word go. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it must be a duck.

      • Smilee

That duck died years ago or do you like the smell of rotting Duck, People of character even if they hated him would not stoop as low as you have!!!!!!!!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

That duck would have hung you Smilee if he caught you alone and thought he could get away with it. Dont let him fool you, that leopard didnt change its spots, it just learned how to play them.

      • Smilee

You say I’m wrong but offered no proof making your post just pure BS!!

      • http://YellowDogsandDemocratHandouts. Lester Havens

One must call a Spade, a Spade. He may be dead, but he’s still a Spade.

      • Mike Lagree

Yeah, He made it the hard way with other peoples money, and we sound “pretty stupid” because we, as a nation, are “pretty stupid”. If we were not,”pretty stupid” we would never allow scumsuckers and leeches like Byrd, Kennedy,Reid,Pelosi, et.al. to live off of us and our neighbors. Adding insult to injury we keep the welfare scum in office until they die of old age and then we praise them while they so deservedly rot.

      • Judy Mimranek

You are right on ! I guess it doesn’t matter how big a scum bag you are as long as someone is bennifitting off you they will praise you till the cows come home. He was a scum bag !

      • Emma

        Mike, you’ve got that right!!!!

      • JeffH

PMcGYVER, pretty obvious you reap what you sow…I’d bet you could tell some pretty bad stories about your good freind, racist stories, I mean arrogant racist stories. Slick Bill Clinton ,to Ted Kennedy about Obama:”A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee”, naturally would have excused Byrd’s bigotry and the racist POTUS public criticism that Cambridge officers “acted stupidly” when they arrested black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. could make it harder for police to work with people of color, eulogized him…Who could forget Dingy Harry and his comment that “Barack Obama was well suited to a presidential run because he is a “light-skinned” African American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”
Byrds of a feather flock together…

      • ChiefRon

Amen JeffH, well said. PMcGYVER hasn’t a clue what he’s saying, or he’s another of the Leftists with his head stuck so far in the sand he doesn’t know what the truth is, but just crys racism when it’s convenient for his side.

As for speaking bad of the dead, since when is that a crime? Or is that small print in Leftists books? And if it is, where is the line drawn, only talk bad of Murderers, but not Politicians that sucked the government for all the money they could and benefited only the small minority of the people, the ones that Scratched HIS back with campaign funds. SHUT UP! DUMOCRATS. Byrd sucked before, he was a crook, and his death doesn’t give reason to praise him.

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

Heck man, look at what a crook Ted Kennedy was, and when he passed, they tried to present him as some kind of saint. The dude was a drunken louse who killed a woman, lied, cheated, stole, pilfered, all on other peoples dime. Byrd was the same way. He was a racist bigot who lived high on the hog with other peoples money, even going as far as stealing millions of it and building monuments to himself all over the state of Pennsylvania, just like the old crooked leaders of Rome and ancient times used to. The man was a crook, and a vile disgusting human being, who cared about nothing more than glorifying himself. He lived his heaven on earth. Im pretty confident it ended there.

PMcGYVER – I can cast the first stone at SO-Called BYRD. I am 57 year old, as long as I can remember, Senator BYRD has funneled fund to West Va. from the government for bull… project just to get votes to be reelected over, and over, and over. Shame on you, I bet you got some of those funds from the government yourself because of him. This is what I glad he dead and gone. I hope you rot in He… with him!!!

        Rest in Peace Senator Byrd

      • American Citizen

What is given to any state over what it sent is stolen goods.

      • AnhydrousBob

Most of what is sent in is absorbed by paying for government, so there is no way to send back as much as came in! Besides, why the hell should someone miles away decide what the money is used for? Leave the money where it is, to be used by the people who earned it.

      • ChiefRon

And THANK GOODNESS he is resting and not Still in the Senate screwing over more Americans than he was doing any good for. As for resting in peace, SHUT UP, he deserves the truth be told of all his actions.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        PMcGUYVER,
Do the letters KKK mean anything to you??? Does the FACT that he recruited over 145 members for said KKK mean anything to you?? Does the FACT that he filibustered the civil rights bill mean anything to you??? I am old enough to remember the seperate fountains and facilities for persons of color in the south. I can remember a black man getting kicked out of a restaurant in Ga while my Dad and I were sitting in it. I was only eight years old and from Michigan but when six or seven men(?) grab a man and throw him bodily from a restaurant it kinda sticks with you. I also remember my father telling me about a Black that was hung on the town square in Ceadartown Ga because he walked between a man and his wife! This was the type of south Byrd wanted to keep!! go piss on somebody elses leg and tell THEM it’s raining, it won’t work on me!!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

But thats just how blind of followers the left are JoeH. Smilee writes and defends the guy, yet if Byrd could have gotten his hands on him in the back woods, you never would have seen Smilee again. The guy was responsible for deaths when he was younger, and never got called out on them. He died a bigot, seeking his own glorification. I have noticed that after all these so called years of doing good for West Viginia, they are still lacking in most everything. Their education systems is terrible, their illiteracy rate is huge, and despite having kept them down and in their place, folks still keep voting for democrats there, who will continue to give them those little government handouts, that keep them down in their place, dependant on government, and they cannot see over their own nose that Byrd and his band of democrats are the reason why. Time to educated West Virginia. The dude bought and sold you all those years of nothingness. You have not improved in what, 60 years of him? Not a bit.

      • Smilee

Aii pure hate, no factual statements on your part, he got past hate something you have yet to do and seem you have no desire too, he expressed regret for his beliefs and actions and changed his ways, will YOU????

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

No he didnt. You have no idea what he said or did in those moments when there was no camera or recording device. I do not believe for one minute that leopard changed his spots. Ive heard him talk and the way he spoke and carried himself showed a man still full of himself, as is evidenced by his building monument after monument bearing his name, all using our money. No, this leopard didnt change his spots. There is no way.

      • J D Gates

We will always be what we are on earth and God will tell us how he feels about it when we get to heaven and the devil will celebrate with the ones that betray God and goodness. Stealing from others is wrong when it comes down to right and wrong and no matter who it benefits. Is Bryd, Robin Hood of our times? Does that make you feel better? Are you saying Damn with other peoples money?

Shame on both of you, him for doing wrong and you for condoning it!

      • meteorlady

The man was a senile, racist bigot. I don’t care if he’s dead or alive – he was all that. Did you actually watch the YouTube video? Do you honestly believe that he was good to be third in line to the Presidency? Gads – take of the blinders. Are the people of W. Virginia any better because of him – they are still in poverty and their educational system sucks?

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

He had done unmitigated damage to West Virginia that will takes years to undo. He has most of the state poor and destitute dependant on government, and that is right where the democrats want them. And the dumb people that he oppressed all those years, kept on voting him in. What does it take for people to get educated and see the light? Those little government handouts hold you back.

      • Paul

As far as Byrd is concerned he was a racist and a pig. Just because he died we should make him a hero or a role model. Where should we stop how about Ted Kennedy the murderer, or even Adolf Hitler or Joe Stalin, Chairman Mao,and countless other low lifes.
Let us all elevate them because they are dead, but count me out.

      • Emma

If he was a good friend of yours, then you should have steered him away from his ways. Some friend, you are!

      • http://donthaveone Beberoni

A good hearted man? He used to go out and hang people just because they had black skin. You call that good hearted? The man was filled with hatred, bigotry, and was so left wing liberally biased that he stayed away from the truth, like he was scared to death of it. But good hearted? No, no he wasnt. He was a very ugly man, and Im talking about what was inside of him. He was a racist and he was crooked as they come, so dont try to revisionist history now that he is dead. He was a rotten human being.

      • Smilee
