Food Storage Now!

July 8, 2010 by

Food Storage Now!

I hazard to guess that not more than 10 percent of our readers could live more than a few days on their stored food and supplies.

Storing food is something that we have to do before we need it. Think now, if a catastrophe of some kind were to occur today—say an earthquake, tornado or terrorist attack—and you needed to begin using your stored food, where would you be?

Do you have more than a couple of days supply on hand? If not, you could be in trouble when disaster strikes. Because once the catastrophe occurs it’s too late to begin storing food.

Americans are used to having plenty of food. Most can’t imagine not being able to go to the store to get food of some sort. But the typical grocery store has about two day’s supply of food in stock at any given time. So, just a short-term interruption in the supply chain could cause hardship and panic among the populace.

It truly takes vision to understand that there could come a time when the supply of food suddenly ends—whether for a few days or for a long period of time—and planning for the future is essential, especially now.

I have long urged you to store food. As for myself, I have stored food for more than 40 years. I rotate and eat out of it, except the vacuum sealed foods that I bought from the Mormons. I have checked it through the years. It has held well.

I have lost a few cans of salmon due to age, but there is no telling how much I have saved because prices were much lower through the years than they are now.

Now to the point: In my opinion we now face more than a probability of much higher prices, scarcity and resulting social problems.

Can we not imagine that an honest man will steal and even plunder if he and his family are hungry?

Agriculture is one of the very few sectors globally that currently faces supply shortages. There is the distinct possibility that this century will see desperate struggles for food and water.

Rising food prices will cause extreme hunger and famine. This will lead to social unrest, revolution and wars.

Does anyone doubt that the regime in the United States will cause extreme hardship because of the collapsing exchange value of paper money? Note that they do not warn the people to protect themselves.

I have been on an island now for some time. I have noticed very high prices and runs on grocery stores on certain days of the week. Still, probably not more than a few can see the negative trends. They still can’t visualize disaster.

Have you ever really been hungry? It is far better to have stored food on hand—even if you have excess food stored—and not ever need it than not to have any food stored and one day be hungry. Food storage may not guarantee that you won’t be hungry, but not storing food will almost certainly guarantee there will be hunger in your future.

It’s a good idea to have at least three day’s supply of canned and/or dried foods available for each member of the family in case of emergency. That would be nine meals each.

Of course, more is better. But we recommend this as a starting point. From there you can add a little more each time you go shopping, setting your sights on having enough for each family member for a week, then two and so on.

It’s also a good idea to store water for emergency situations. Minimum requirements are two gallons per person per day—more if you live in a warmer climate.

I also believe strongly that investing in agriculture companies now is similar to investing in oil at $17 a barrel in 2002. Look up Agro Terra Ltd. and Agro Terra Partners.

If you want to learn more about what foods to store and how to prepare for a crisis situation you can order our book, How to Survive the Collapse of Civilization. It covers practical, low-cost strategies for coping with global epidemics, terrorist attacks, electrical grid disruptions, food and water storage and much more.

OH YA, AND STEPHEN YOUR WELCOME TO BREAK INTO MY HOUSE AND SEE HOW COWARDICE I AM. OR SNEEK UP ON ME IN THE STREET AND WRAP YOUR ARMS AROUND MY NECK TO SAY HI, AND I’LL SHOW YOU…..WHAT A COWARD REALLY LOOKS LIKE! DON’T FORGET WE ALL LET THIS COUNTRY GET TO THIS POINT INCLUDING YOU, AND UNFORTUNETELY YOU VOTED FOR A MARXIST AND A THIEVING LIAR, SO FOR THIS PRESIDENTS TERM AND ALL HIS DOINGS, I BLAME YOU!!!!!! BUT, I WILL PRAY FOR YOU ANYWAY, BECAUSE YOU NEEEEEED JESUS!

    • DROPOUT2001

If this idiot or any other idiot tries to break into my house or attempt to manhandle me in the street, he is definitely going to need Jesus.

    • survivor

Anyone comes trying to take from me or my family will end up providing us some fresh meat to mix in with my stored goods!

  • Mel

I’m on SSDI. It took 2 times and many, many years to finally get it. I cashed my IRAs, my life insurance policies, had to sell my house short before it went into foreclosure. If anyone thinks its a handout to receive SSDI, you are so wrong. I worked construction and knew to keep food stored away for when there was nothing coming in. My mother went thru the depression and stored food and such. Her main item was toilet paper. The one item I would suggest to try to have on hand is your medication. I try to stay a month ahead. Like it was mentioned, it can be any disruption in our lives where we will need to be prepared. Elaine you’re in my prayers.

    • Jeff

      Mel,

Increase your medicine scripts to 90 days. Most doctors will do this if you ask.

S Melvin was last seen standing on a rooftop in New Orleans
    pleading for rescue!
( After having been warned long before to get the hell out of the way!)

  • Dianne

I live in CA. My friend lives in Santa Cruz. What saved her in the “89 quake was that she had food stored, had 10-20 gal. water, and enough fuel for her camp stove to prepare food until power came back. You are just silly if you are not ready to take care of your household for the 3 (ha, ha, ha) days the goberment says it’ll take until they can come to help the public.
Yup, I have a mix of canned (remember, there is water in there) and dry high nutrient foods. Including quinoia and chia seeds, as well as nuts.
Unlike big storms, earthquakes do not give warning.
My husband and I also are trained as Red Cross Emergency Responders. My instructor told us we have much of the skill set of EMT’s without anatomy and medicine dispensing. Useful in case of trauma.
My city has training for people to address these issues, including a introduction to urban search and rescue, as well as how to shore up collapsing buildings. Intrduction.

    • MikeC

      Hey, Dianne!

Do you have a link or suggestion to receive that training! Good day!

  • Elle

My forefathers were also prepared and they canned & had gardens. I think it wise to be prepared, there is no quarentee on tomarrow but it is best to be prepared. I am thankful for people like “Bob” who keep us up to date and thinking. I am sorry people like Steven Mason & others look at this as scare tactics, what a pity! It is just commoin sense in managing you well being. Lets not be bickery!

  • Tony

What’s the difference, the world is going to end in December 2012 anyway right? I bet you guys believe that too? It’s one thing to prepare yourself for a natural disaster, but to expect to one day need a fallout shelter for survival is absurd; you’re a psycho living in a bubble. Calm down, the November elections will begin to fix the problems. Geeze you guys are paranoid!!

    • JC

Who are you and how did you find me?

      • Tony

I am your worst nightmare. I am an alien from outer space and I will cast my powerful laser weapons upon planet earth in the fall of 2011. Only humans living 12-15 feet below the earth’s surface will survive. All survivors captured will be taken to the galaxy of darkness for medical testing. Hide, while you still can!!

      • JC

Umm…actually that isn’t my worst nightmare.
A false flag terrorist attack and / or race riots, food shortages would be though. And those are very real possibilities.

But thanks for playing along. :)

      • Tony

A natural disaster or terrorist attack is definitely a possibility, I agree with that. I don’t think we will see a civil war or excessive rioting to the point of chaos. If we do, I have a few firearms that haven’t been used in a while ;)

      • http://personalliberty.com Jessica

I always thought that the invading aliens would capture & eat the slow, fat ones first. Wouldn’t that give the rest of us a chance to haul ass and hide out?

      • DROPOUT2001

I live within an hour’s drive of the Mexican border. Whether one lives in the Outer Limits TV show, or where I and my neighbors do, what you envision may come all too true, Jessica.

    • Claire

Tony–Call me paranoid if you want, but I don’t want to be up a creek without a paddle. I will not be hung out to dry. Just don’t come pounding on my door wanting something to eat. It very well may turn out to be a scenario where it is every man for himself. One never knows. Go ahead and be cocky about this issue, you may be the one left holding the bag. Literally.

  • Scott Brown

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, probably here as well.

At the risk of causing a run on the stores for these particular items, I highly recommend three food items: dried organic lentils, brown rice, and mined sea salt as your first bulk purchases. To this emergency food supply, you probably should add a good (I mean GOOD, not One-a-Days, but COMPLETE) natural-source multivitamin/mineral.

You’ll also want a water source(and/or a good Katadyn filter), cooking fuel source, butane lighters (also a good trade item; I still don’t get why anyone would store bulky wooden matches when Bics are small, light, waterproof, and good for thousands of lights), a non-electric stainless steel pressure cooker with spare seal ring & pressure plug, and seed-sprouting containers with screens.

Allied POWs in Japanese prison camps lived months/years mainly on rice alone (rent the movie “King Rat,” or read the Clavell historical novel). You can do far better than they did, with just the above listed items.

Purchase one 25 lb. bag of ORGANIC green lentils and two of ORGANIC short- or long-grain brown rice, and 2-3 lbs. of trace-mineral-rich all natural mined sea salt. For those who haven’t tried it before, a diet of 1-to-2 legumes-to-grains will provide you with a complete assimilable protein, and the salt will provide flavor and more importantly minerals, sufficient to keep you healthy indefinitely. Further, sprouted lentils are rich enough in vitamin C (as well as other fresh vegetable nutrients) to prevent scurvy and other problems (and no, you will not have the problem with constipation which you’d otherwise experience with a stash of Spaghetti-Os, Spam, and Lipton soups).

Red or black beans and pearl barley, in the same 1-to-2 ratio, provide nearly the same protein as lentils and rice, but take twice the time/fuel to cook unless pre-soaked. A good pressure cooker will cook lentils and rice in 10-12 minutes at sea level (above 2000 ft. add about half a minute per 1000 ft.).

Those three bags of boring legumes and grains, even if you had NOTHING else, could keep you alive for around three months at a use-rate of just under a cup (dry) per day. People have, and do, live far longer on far less.

Do I store more variety and greater quantity? Absolutely. Have I arranged for additional food supplies in the event of longer-range need? Of course. You can never store enough because you never know how long an emergency (or concatenated series of disasters) will last. If we live long enough, we may be permitted to enjoy all manner of apocalyptic stuff.

But were I allowed only four food items and four pieces of equipment to nourish me for 90 days without further aid, they would consist of: 75 lbs. of legumes and grains as described, a pound or two of sea salt, and a large bottle of multivitamins; a 4 quart Presto pressure cooker, a large sprouting jar, a Bic lighter, and a high-end Katadyn water filter. If you had to move quickly, you could carry a third of the food on your back and cache the rest with your spare ammo, to come back to later.

After such a 90-day nutritional austerity program, in addition to being alive, the average American would probably emerge in far better physical shape than he or she is in today.

    • Christin

      Thanks, great info.

I was wondering what is a “false flag terrorist attack?”
I have heard that several times now.

      • DROPOUT2001

Go to Google.com, type in “false flag.” Check out the well-written and researched piece entitled “False Flag Operations” at http://www.wanttoknow.info/falseflag. Since WWII, the Israelis have virtually written the book on false flag terrorism, but many countries and organizations have used it, and are still using it (yes, Christin, that includes the US CIA).

    • Steve Gast

Going to the store tommorow because of your post Thanks Scott Brown

  • Elaine Seavey

I prepared thoroughly for Y2K that never happened. It took a HUGE effort and thousands of dollars, and the salary and energy I had then. Now I am late-74, have NO MONEY but Social, and it didn’t even get a COL increase & won’t for 2 more yrs. FINALLY resorted to food stamps and got a “whopping” $16 per month…that is ALL. So I have absolutely NO WAY to prepare for any emergency….not even our six months of hurricane season in Florida!!! So perhaps someone can tell me how to die gracefully if it gets to this stage where we rely on stored food? I am at wits end without even THAT to consider! And I have worked my entire life.

    • Scott Brown

Elaine, read my comments below. Maybe not your complete solution, but a start. I remember Y2K all too well, I was working for IBM software development at the time and trust me, the threat was real and preparation for it was the right thing to do. If so many software and hardware people had not begun burning the midnight oil well in advance, all hell could easily have broken loose.

I’m 61 next month, not the spring chicken I was back then, but I’m convinced that with the Gulf gusher, the world economic crises (there are more than one), the threat of invasion/martial law, national blackout, god knows what else, what could have happened had we not averted a Y2K disaster would have been like a string of small firecrackers in comparison to the threats we now face.

Again, read my comments below, for starters. Whatever you learned preparing for Y2K may stand you in good stead now.

    • http://personalliberty.com Jessica

Even 16 bucks a month will buy a store of beans, rice, sugar and cheap pig meat. It kept my ancestors alive and healthy for generations.

    • WideRanger

Elaine, you just haven’t thought this through. Don’t believe you have to die because you don’t have funds for food…always look for the ‘buy one and get one free’ and stockpile it. If you are able, start a square-foot (or any size)vegetable garden and grow something fresh. Call on neighbors and/or relatives to help you organize. Watch for sales of items you think you can use in case of emergency. You will be okay if you take charge of your situation. You’ll find it a challenge and fun to be prepared…maybe you can team-up with a good friend and support each other. -Regards.

    • Grandma

Elaine, My mother is 82 and still works 3 days a week. And with the internet, there is no excuse. You have more than a few opportunities to make more money; just look for them.

      • texastwin827

Grandma, you are rude and have no right in suggesting that Elaine should “get a job” and has “no excuse”, just because your 82 yr old grandmother works 3 days a week. You have absolutely NO IDEA of what her health situation is or if she is even able to work.

Someone should have taught you, MANY years ago…if you can’t say anything nice, keep your mouth shut!

      • texastwin827

I meant to say your “82 yr old MOTHER”

    • James

I will help all I can in this type of event

    • texastwin827

Elaine, first of all, know that there are many older people (I will soon be 66) in your position. I, fortunately, live with one of my daughters so I’m not faced with “going it alone”. One thing you may want to do is go through all the various articles and look for Granny Mae’s comments, for guidelines. She’s awesome!

As one poster mentioned, look for “buy 1 get 1″ sales. Also, while I know it must be humiliating to you, since you’ve worked all your life, contact food pantries in your area to see if you also qualify for assistance, given you qualified for such a small amount of food stamps. Often times, their requirements are more in line with the real world than the govt’s.

There is also a food ministry called Angel Food Ministry http://www.angelfoodministries.com/menu.asp
Check to see if there is a church sponsor in your area, for this program (they also take food stamps) While this food may not be non-perishable, it offers food at a lower cost, which might free up some of your money and enable you to buy extra, at the grocery store, for your stockpile.

If you are a Southern girl…LOL….start with a few bags of dried beans because we all know that’s a “southern staple” and will provide protein. If it’s only you, consider just buying one or two items, each month. Remember, a one lb bag of dried beans will feed one person for several days.

Beyond that, I don’t have any other suggestions but perhaps others will have. Good luck & God Bless You

  • Stephen Mason

OMG! A black man is in the white house! Run for the hills!

I have unsubscribed from all this claptrap because I am sick and tired of the mindless paranoia – Oh! And also, all the profiteering from the mindless paranoia. I wonder… Is it typically American to be so lily-livered and prone to hysteria? I hope not. You fanatics really cause me to question my patriotism – and my ancestors WERE the founding fathers. They would be ashamed by all the cowardice exhibited here – as am I.

This country was founded on LIBERAL principles, and don’t forget it.

    • Paul

Your post makes me also question your patriotism. If you would forget about color of skin long enough to think like a self sufficient MAN, you would realize the intelligence behind having a backup generator in hurricane alley.

If all Americans thouguht like you, through history, we would be speaking Russian now.

      • Scott Brown

Or we would be whispering ghosts.

    • JC

You’re probably right Stephen. All you really need is hope.
You should put one of those Obama circle logo things in your front window and let everyone know where you stand.
Stand up and be counted Dammit! Yes you can Yes you can…

Just don’t knock on my door and ask for anything.

      • Paul

        Right on!
Don’t prepare and knock those who do. But don’t knock on my door either. I’m not Barack Obama and you’re not entitled to jack [word removed].

    • sheila carter

WHATEVER STEPHEN MASON! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH “A BLACK MAN”, IT HAS TO DO WITH LET’S SEE….UMMMM…..WELL HE’S DONE NOTHING ABOUT AZ. ASKING FOR HELP WITH IMMIGRATION EXCEPT SLAP US IN THE FACE BY SAYING HE WON’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, EXCEPT SUE AND HE’S SITTING BACK LETTING THE OIL JUST RUN AND RUN, HE HAS CRAMMED HEALTH CARE DOWN YOUR THROAT, HE HAS PUBLICLY EMBARRASSED THS COUNTRY OVER AND OVER. SHALL I GO ON? OK…..NOW HE’S BOWING TO ISLAM, HE WON’T SHOW HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE, HE LET THE BLACK PANTHER GO (WHO’S THE RACIST THERE?)I COULD GO ON AND ON. AND YA NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAS DONE A FINE JOB EITHER, BUT NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAS MADE ENEMIES WITH OUR ALLIES AND SPIT I THEIR FACE AND THEN TURNED AROUND AND MENTIONED THINGS HE’S GONNA DO THAT WOULD TURN THE U.S. INTO A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY! HE HAS COMPLETELY IGNORED OUR RIGHTS IN OUR CONSTITUTION BY DOING WHATEVER HE WANTS, ALONG WITH HIS WHITE AND ITALIAN CRONIES, WHO I DON’T LIKE AND DESPISE ALSO. AND FURTHERMORE IT IS YOUR, NOT MINE, YOUR PRESIDENT THAT HAS INSTILLED THE PARANOIA IN US, WITH ALL OF HIS “GREAT PLANS”. SO, YOU GO RUNNING DOWN THE DAMN STREET WITH S. MELVIN, BUT DON’T KNOCK ON MY DOOR, BECAUSE WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU, SYMPATHY IS BETWEEN [offensive word removed] AND SYPHILIS IN THE DICTIONARY!!!!

      • http://personallibertydigest Madlyn

Sheila, How many Italians do you speak of??? I am an American of Italian decent on my mother’s side. My uncles all fought in all the wars in this country and risked their lives for our flag. We are strongly patriotic. Don’t talk about Italians as if they are all on the Obama bandwagon because we’re not. We know a socialist, racist anti-American when we see one. Just because Madame Pelosi is power hungry and will stop at nothing to hold on to that power, at the expense of the American way of life, doesn’t mean the majority of Italian Americans feel that way. You despise Pelosi, perhaps, but don’t hate an entire nationality of people because of her. I served my country in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. I was a medic. I didn’t see action because I was a woman, but I treated many casualties who came through Guam. I love this country. I would die to protect it. Would you????

    • Paul

Last I rread, the founding fathers had guns, ammo, stored crops and fought to stay alive. Maybe we read different history books. I’m sure we’ll one day read the same one about the worst president in the history of America though. Lemme give you a hint on his initials…. MARXIST.

    • wasadoc

Don’t talk “Founding Fathers”. Mine was Edward Rutledge. Check the paperwork. And don’t talk “black in the whitehouse”. I grew up with blacks and have many of them as friends. Admit it. You are just pathetic.

    • vicki

      Stephen Mason writes:
“I have unsubscribed from all this claptrap…”

Then why are you still here and posting too?

    • Sheila Reynolds

No Stephen, you don’t have to be a black (or half-black) man to be a piss-poor leader. Another thing, this country was built on CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE NOT LIBERAL. Stop being a parasite and take responsibility for yourself.

    • WideRanger

Obviously Steven Mason, you were not a Boy Scout…”Be Prepared”. Like the wise man says: “I had rather have my 9MM in my hand and not need it than to need it and not have it”. You don’t sound like you are even from this country Steven…not enough pride in your country to be an asset? Just in case you a righteous person, just remember that “Faith is not meant to be a substitute for intelligence”.

    • Oh Please…

Actually Stephen, it is LACK of preparation that produces hysteria. There is nothing wrong with calmly, rationally thinking ahead (it’s called being self-sufficient, BEING an ADULT, btw…). While I concede that I am not nearly as prepared for an emergency as some of the people here, I CAN say that I have never had to run out for supplies in the weather emergencies I’ve experienced over the years…..like I’ve observed many others around me ‘frantically’ have done. In fact now that I finally live somewhere with space to have a garden I have started one and hope to also learn how to can my own goods. Why? Because whether caused by nature or not….I do not want to HAVE to impose myself on others in the event of an emergency. Not to mention…..how could I remotely hope to help anyone else if I have not even prepared well enough to take care of myself.

    • texastwin827

Stephen don’t pull the race card out…it really makes you look stupid, given that the President was NOT elected by only black people. He would not be where he is, had a lot of WHITE people not voted for him. Get real!

Most canned food has so much junk in it I really don’t want to eat it. I know it is certainly better than starving so I do keep some on hand, but I don’t refresh it because I won’t eat it UNLESS I am starving!! Read labels – MSG in all soups – HFC in all kinds of stuff! I’m a senior and a heart patient and my husband has diabetes. Not much in the canned line that won’t kill us eventually. Where is the source for the Mormon food?

beside good example’KATHARINA and today day 80 “OILSPLI” so where is the TRUE” we send man to the “MOON”, but we cannot care for our citizen?

    • Paul

You are an example of the “citizens” who assume no responsibility for your actions, and or lack of. You MUST be a Liberal slacker, totally dependent on your “GOVERNMENT” to take care of you and your family, instead of taking the initiative, as conservative people tend to. But hey, that’s part of your entitlement, right?

Suppose there is not bomb like Hiroshima or Nagasaki, but a civil war or lockdowns where you cannot be in the streets because only murderers and looters are out there. Suppose a hurricane hits a city with intelligent people, unlike those who stayed in a city below sea level during Katrina… the damage would be substantial and it would be days before help was available still.

I’m sure this was a waste of time. You people never learn.

      • wasadoc

I got you covered. Told my wife some months ago that we might be having the kids and grandkids coming to stay with us. I have two acres and that will grow a lot of food. Even at 70, I am still a survivor and still capable of “insuring” my own family. Would hate to see 11 people in this house, but if need be.

      • Angel-Wanna-Be

wasadoc, me too__told both our kids, and they’re families,if something happens, bring what you can and come home, there is safety in numbers.

OR S. MELVIN, SUPPOSE YOU DIDN’T PREPARE FOR THE WORST IN THIS DREADFUL TIME AND SUPPOSE YOU WERE FORCED INTO THE STREETS TO RUN AWAY FROM BAD PEOPLE AND YOUR RUNNING, KNOCKING ON DOORS, “HELP ME PLEASE, I WAS ILL PREPARED BECAUSE I’M AN IDIOT”, AND IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT YOU’VE KNOCKED ON A COLD BLOODED AMERICANS DOOR (LIKE MINE) WHO……SLAMS IT IN YOUR FACE, WHAT THEN? DO YOU SUPPOSE THAT THAT IF PEOPLE IN OKLAHOMA HAD A BOMB SHELTER OR SOME KIND OF UNDERGROUND SHELTER, THEY WOULD’VE BEEN SAVED FROM THOSE HORRIBLE TORNADOES? YOUR MOM NEVER TOLD YOU, “IT’S BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN, THAN SORRY”, BUT OBVIOUSLY YOUR ALREADY SORRY. SOMETIMES PEOPLE NEED FEAR TO WAKE THEIR BUTTS UP, BUT, YOU MY FRIEND WILL PROBABLY BE IN A SOUND SLEEP FOREVER!!!!

Hay Guys, You make all these prep.. ONE BIG RULE, Keep your mouth shut about it, When hard time comes, someone will remember and try to take it away, so quiet about, Just a hint. May God Bless all of you that are helping your self a head of time, Remember, “He says He help those that help themself’s to do it right.

    • Scott Brown

Two answers to that, Shorty. The short one, you notice how many people here also make reference to ammo stores and keeping their powder dry? What do you imagine they plan to use this ammo for when people come to take what they have stored?

Longer answer: I too have considered the wisdom of advising others to store food, thus telegraphing that I am doing so. The conclusion I’ve come to is this: The more like-minded people I can convince to prepare, the better. Why?

      1. Darwinian culling of naysayers, fools and government-reliant leeches will improve the remaining population mix.

      2. Self-defending communities of self-reliant citizens will be better able to survive and resist threats from without. These are the sort of neighbors I want around me and with whom I communicate now.

      3. As for those who plan to come and take any stores I’ve had the foresight to establish and maintain, they pretty much also know I’ve prepared for them, as well. If the apocalypse does come, after the first few days/weeks/months, it will be obvious who has prepared, because they will still be standing. By the same reasoning it will also be obvious who it is that intends to remain standing even in the face of marauding predators. Not speaking out now will not protect anyone from marauders later. Human predators are nothing new to the species.

    • Bob Robertson

I once tried to talk a man into getting prep’d. He declined vigorously. I then asked him what was he going to feed his family not if but when TWGTSHTF, he politely told he would remember that I had prepared. Something to think about…

  • Teresa Miller

I would get some mylar bags and seal them with a iron if you can, to store your food in. Some food grade buckets with oxygen obsobers. Some medical supplies. If no wood stove maybe a kerosene heater. Make sure you crack open a window to venalate room. Get some nonfat dry milk.

  • SOPHIA

I have always been one to store food. Here in the midwest US we have had snowstorms, ice storms and drifting snow that has kept us home bound for days. We have eaten from food storage, kept warm without electricity for days and cooked on open fire. This is just common sense to me. Prepare even if only for the acts of Mother Nature, even if you don’t think that the economy and govt is going to go really bad.

  • Sylvia Rangel

Thank you Bob. I agree 100%.

    God Bless America.

    • Al Sieber

JC, thanks for the list, I’m way behind.

      • JC

Your welcome Al. In your case, living in the Mountains, I’d make one more recommendation. Set up alarms on trails. Use fishing line attached to cans of rocks or some such device to warn you of people’s presence.

      • Al Sieber

Thanks JC, I have 2 wireless video cameras, night vision, 5 wireless sensors, 2 dogs, and plenty of firearms.

      • txarchie

Would you mind sharing the make & model numbers of your security equipment?

      • meteorlady

Thanks for the list – I have started a garden for veggies and herbs. I have a lot of the stuff you say, but am a little behind as I never really thought about some of the things you list.

    • Angel-Wanna-Be

      JC, Great List_Thanks!

      • JC

You’re welcome also. Please note however that the list says nothing about defending yourself. Make sure you have that covered as well.

      • Angel-Wanna-Be

        jc, already covered!

      • JC

Yeah…it’s probably not necessary to point that out to an “American: ;)

      • 45caliber

An excellent item I’ve missed on the list are bow and arrows. They aren’t hard to use and aren’t that expensive. If you learn to make arrows, they are replaceable as they are used up. You can get supplies once you know how. Many archery clubs or stores can show you how to make them. Keep in mind you will need extra strings for the bow as well.

      • vicki

arrows are also reusable and repairable.

      • DROPOUT2001

        vicki says:

arrows are also reusable and repairable

Good point, Vicki. And after you remove one from a marauding drug dealer you can also take his Uzi and ammo. Just being practical.

      • MikeC

        Great idea, 45!

Saw a video on YouTube. This guy converted a slingshot, by adding a whisker bisque. He could then use arrows to hunt and defend. Great and cheap idea! Stay safe!

      • Curt

WASP SPRAY!!! Stock pile it. Great for self protection, much more effective then pepper spray. It also can double as fire starter/flame thrower and bug killer.

    • CM

Wow! Great list! I thought I was doing good, but little do I know!
Thank you! I’ve ordered some food through Emergency Essentials but I wish they had organic. Being on an Island in Alaska we are pretty survival minded, but have a long way to go!

    • Richard Pawley

You might consider a comfort bicyle for local suburban transportation too. It can be hooked up to an alternator for a source of 12 volt electricity too, if you don’t have any solar panels.

    • http://personalliberty.com Jessica

Don’t forget about crossbows. They’re much cheaper than guns, you can buy them online, and they’re fun to target practice with. Could come in handy in a siege situation. And unlike bullets, you can make your own arrows once you understand how the simple technology works.

      • JC

Excellent Point! Not to mention they are “quiet”.

      • Claire

JC–they are quiet alright, but you better have good aim.

    • http://yahoo Harold Coleman

Very good list, lot of thought there.
However being an old retarted cop, would recommend small and not so small firearms and a good supply of ammo.
Ammo and even old junk guns, like liquor can be traded in time of disaster.
Whatever bs is put forth-fact still remains, if you have a firearm you are a citizen. If you do not have a firearm, you are a victim in waiting.

      • 45caliber

You are quite correct. You can buy metal and plastic ammo cans from most gun stores that can be used to safely store extra boxes of ammo. And since it can be used as trade goods, you can never have too much.

      • http://personalliberty.com Jessica

The best ammo cans are the old ones that you get from army surplus stores. They are totally airtight, and can stand up to the most humid conditions.

    • John R

I would add more in the way of medical supplies AND a first aid guide/booklet. Aspirin and pain pills are always good barter items as are packets of coffee and tea. Let’s all keep adding to the list…no ideas are too trite or silly!

      • Sheila Reynolds

Lots of aspirin (to avoid, stroke, heart attack, and fever/inflamation), Hydrogen Peroxide, rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, triple antibiotic creme, and sterile bandages. Try growing aloe plants, echinacea, and roses(rose hips high in Vit. C). Great list J.C. Thanks

      • momof4

How about a hand operated wheat grinder, and charcoal incase electricity fails. You can always cook on the grill.

    • http://PersonalLiberty Ruby

Wow,J C this is a great idea. You are a blessing. I will keep this list and work on it until I have all of these stocked.

God Bless You and we must pray this never happens.

    • bmwsid

One iten not on the list that should be, is SALT! ()and chocolate!)

      • Scott Brown

Absolutely, and it’s a good trade item in inland areas as well, where deficiencies of trace iodine causes goiter–thyroid enlargement–over time. A word of caution, however, “ordinary” table salt is anything but. It’s been bleached, demineralized, had iodine re-added, and has added chemicals to reduce clumping. If you consider Wonder Bread to actually be “bread,” you’ll probably be quite happy with Morton’s Salt as “salt.”

A far better alternative is tan-colored, mined, unrefined sea salt from old sea beds (like, pre-Jurassic). No pollutants, much better flavor, and dozens of trace minerals including its orginal iodine. One brand available is Redmond RealSalt from Utah (www.realsalt.com), though of course there are others (and, beware!, also some bull—- imitations, as with everything else). Natural sea salt is to common table salt as Ezekiel Bread* is to processed white bread. Which would you rather attempt to survive on?

Compared to white “table” salt, this choice isn’t cheap but, hey, it’s your survival store, friend. Oh, needless to say, you needn’t rotate it…this stuff obviously has a shelf-life of forever. And you can brush your teeth with it in a pinch.

*”Take also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it”–Ez.4:9.

(Also you might consider grinding dried lentils and brown rice in a 1-to-2 ratio, adding sea salt and aluminum-free baking powder for rough and ready, high-protein flapjacks. Top with natural preserves, raw honey, real maple syrup, or organic blackstrap molasses [rich in potassium, calcium, iron]. A substantial breakfast to keep you going for hours. Fry up enough to last you all day if you’re on the run.)

    • Marlene

I have been doing this for a couple of years now…some months with more zeal than others but always adding something to the crisis room. I haven’t read about (or I have forgotten) tuna in oil (vs water)….can you enlighten me?

      • Scott Brown

No, unless they have a longer shelf life (?) or you think your diet requires the oil. You might consider learning to like sardines, instead (trust me, by week 3 they’ll start looking mighty tasty). Lower on the food chain, far less mercury poisoning (the last thing you want to do during a period of nutritional shortage is give your system deadly toxins to fight off). Also way cheaper.

As for the oil, fish which comes packed in sild, which is a Norwegian fish oil (from herring), makes dietary sense. Can’t speak for whatever other oils the canneries might be using.

On the broader subject of “acquired tastes” (my girlfriends have nearly all said of my enjoying sardines: “Eeewww!”), all acquired taste is just that, acquired. When it comes down to survival, we’ll probably all have to learn some new ones.

Case in point, I read of an avid hiker went out with friends on week-long mountain treks, humping all their food, including emergency rations. Halfway through, most of his friends would have devoured all their emergency trail mix and jerky, so anyone breaking an ankle and having to await rescue would be in deep doo-doo. When they asked him why he never succumbed to similar gustatory urges he reached into his pack and pulled out a package of perfectly nutritious dog food, said laconically: “Emergency rations.”

    • Anthony

Great List – I would add Hemp Clothing. It lasts forever and holds up under just about any condition.

What about extra winter clothing? Living in the warmer climates will be crowded.

  • Angel-Wanna-Be

I started buying extra canned goods, about 6 months ago. I make my own bread on a regular basis. Flour(Air tight) is good for about a year. I have a chest freezer that is at least half full if ice bags, if electricity goes, that will at least keep things cold for a lttle while. I’ve stock piled oil for oil lamps and I make my own tapered and poured tallow candles. The wood stove will be finished by august. we’ve already started on the wood pile.__If we never need to use emergency preparedness, then we have extra. If we do need it, at least it’ll keep us going for a while. I don’t trust this administration at all, and I too think we’re headed for tougher times.
    God Bless America.

    • 45caliber

If you have a good freezer, you can store flour and other grains far longer. Keep in mind that the freezer will be useless once the power is lost but then you will still have your year or so of storage on top of the time it has sat in the freezer. A chest type freezer will hold far more supplies than an upright will.

    • Ron Rosland

You sound pretty well prepared, though watch out for the canned food. Canned food is loaded with salt as a preservative. The salt in canned food turns off the appeal very quickly. What about dried fruits and vegetables, natural home made sour kraut, legumes, assortments of grain, a heavy duty good production grain/corn grinder and such?

    • Angel-Wanna-Be

BTW, ALONG WITH FOOD CANNING, YOU CAN ALSO PULL GREEN TOMATOES, WRAP EACH SEPARETLY IN NEWSPAPER, PLACE IN A COOL DARK PLACE,(CAVES AND PUMP ROOMS) THEY SHOULD CARRY YOU THROUGH, TIL AT LEAST CHRISTMAS. NOT SURE ABOUT AREAS, THAT ARE WARM ALL THE TIME.__CHECK OFTEN

  • http://www.oathkeepers.org Martin

Once a month I buy supplies from one section of our families emergency list
    Food/Water
    Guns/Ammunition
    Fuels/Batteries
    Clothing/Shelter
    Transportation/Communications

This way I know that we are at least somewhat prepared and able to defend ourselves if an attack or disaster was to happen. I do not spend much usually between 100 and 300 depending on which area I am boosting up
Think about this… How would YOU get your family out of a disaster zone or scavange for supplies if there was no fuel or electricity?
For less then 800 I built a battery powered Go-Kart and trailer with 10hp electric motor with a solar recharge system. It’s not much but it will get my family and stuff 25 miles per charge at full power and almost 70 miles at 1/3rd power.

When WW III Started – 1979

This is not very long, but very informative You have to read the catalogue of events in this brief piece. Then, ask yourself how anyone can take the position that all we have to do is bring our troops home from Iraq, reset the snooze alarm, go back to sleep, and no one will ever bother us again. In case you missed it, World War III began in November 1979…

US Navy Captain Ouimette is the Executive Officer at Naval Air Station, Pensacola , Florida . Here is a copy of the speech he gave last month. It is an accurate account of why we are in so much trouble today and why this action is so necessary.

    AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP!

That’s what we think we heard on the 11th of September 2001 (When more than 3,000 Americans were killed) and maybe it was, but I think it should have been ‘Get Out of Bed!’ In fact, the alarm clock has been buzzing since 1979 and we have continued to hit the snooze button and roll over for a few more minutes of peaceful sleep since then.

It was a cool fall day in November 1979 in a country going through a religious and political upheaval when a group of Iranian students attacked and seized the American Embassy in Tehran . This seizure was an outright attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world’s most powerful country hostage and paralyzed a Presidency The attack on this sovereign U. S. Embassy set the stage for events to follow for the next 25 years.

America was still reeling from the aftermath of the Vietnam experience and had a serious threat from the Soviet Union when then, President Carter, had to do something. He chose to conduct a clandestine raid in the desert. The ill-fated mission ended in ruin, but stood as a symbol of America’s inability to deal with terrorism

America ‘s military had been decimated and down sized since the end of the Vietnam War. A poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly organized military was called on to execute a complex mission that was doomed from the start.

Shortly after the Tehran experience, Americans began to be kidnapped and killed throughout the Middle East . America could do little to protect her citizens living and working abroad. The attacks against US soil continued.

In April of 1983 a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven into the US Embassy compound in Beirut When it explodes, it kills 63 people The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once more.

Then just six short months later in 1983 a large truck heavily laden down with over 25 00 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine Corps headquarters in Beirut and 241 US servicemen are killed. America mourns her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more.

Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait , and America continues her slumber.

The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gate of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.

Soon the terrorism spreads to Europe . In April 1985 a bomb explodes in a restaurant frequented by US soldiers in Madrid

Then in August 1985 a Volkswagen loaded with explosives is driven into the main gate of the US Air Force Base at Rheine-Main, 22 are killed and the snooze alarm is buzzing louder and louder as US interests are continually attacked.

Fifty-nine days later in 1985 a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro is hijacked and we watched as an American in a wheelchair is singled out of the passenger list and executed.

The terrorists then shift their tactics to bombing civilian airliners when they bomb TWA Flight 840 in April of 1986 that killed 4 and the most tragic bombing, Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie , Scotland in 1988, killing 259.

The wake up alarm is getting louder and louder.

The terrorists decide to bring the fight to America . In January 1993, two CIA agents are shot and killed as they enter CIA headquarters in Langley , Virginia

The following month, February 1993 , a group of terrorists are arrested after a rented van packed with explosives is driven into the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City . Six people are killed and over 1000 are injured. Still this is a crime and not an act of war? The Snooze alarm is depressed again.

Then in November 1995 a car bomb explodes at a US military complex in Riyadh Saudi Arabia killing seven service men and women.

A few months later in June of 1996, another truck bomb explodes only 35 yards from the US military compound in Dhahran , Saudi Arabia . It destroys the Khobar Towers , a US Air Force barracks, killing 19 and injuring over 500. The terrorists are getting braver and smarter as they see that America does not respond decisively.

They move to coordinate their attacks in a simultaneous attack on two US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania . These attacks were planned with precision. They kill 224. America responds with cruise missile attacks and goes back to sleep.

The USS Cole was docked in the port of Aden, Yemen for refueling on 12 October 2000 , when a small craft pulled along side the ship and exploded killing 17 US Navy Sailors. Attacking a US War Ship is an act of war, but we sent the FBI to investigate the crime and went back to sleep.

And of course you know the events of 11 September 2001. Most Americans think this was the first attack against US soil or in America . How wrong they are. America has been under a constant attack since 1979 and we chose to hit the snooze alarm and roll over and go back to sleep.

In the news lately we have seen lots of finger pointing from every high official in government over what they knew and what they didn’t know. But if you’ve read the papers and paid a little attention I think you can see exactly what they knew. You don’t have to be in the FBI or CIA or on the National Security Council to see the pattern that has been developing since 1979.

I think we have been in a war for the past 25 years and it will continue until we as a people decide enough is enough. America needs to ‘Get out of Bed’ and act decisively now. America has been changed forever. We have to be ready to pay the price and make the sacrifice to ensure our way of life continues. We cannot afford to keep hitting the snooze button again and again and roll over and go back to sleep.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor , Admiral Yamamoto said ‘… it seems all we have done is awakened a sleeping giant.’ This is the message we need to disseminate to terrorists around the world.

This is not a political thing to be hashed over in an election year, this is an AMERICAN thing. This is about our Freedom and the Freedom of our children in years to come.

If you believe in this please forward it to as many people as you can especially to the young people and all those who dozed off in history class and who seem so quick to protest such a necessary military action. If you don’t believe it, just delete it and go back to sleep.

James thanks for the history lesson. Important for our youth to know this stuff as well us older folks. I graduated HS in 1979 and I have to admit up until the late mid 1990′s I don’t remember any of what you mentioned. I was in my 20′s in the 1980′s who is really paying attention at that age? I will be sending your history lesson to my son, who is now in he’s 20′s and his name is also James.

      Thank you

      • helen

~~in response to James Graham’s excellent column and to Eva–
I agree, Graham’s journalist abilities, and his keen recollection of events are admirable.. I am printing and emailing his column to all on my mailing lists. He has done us a service to present these facts.
        Now, to Eva:
… “Important for our youth to know this stuff as well us older folks. I graduated HS in 1979 and I have to admit up until the late mid 1990′s I don’t remember any of what you mentioned. I was in my 20′s in the 1980′s who is really paying attention at that age?”
~~Eva, it depended on who your teachers were in those days? I would ask: Did your parents make an effort to ‘fortify’ the scanty or, as is the case now, nonexistent, American History classes in your schools? A little late for that — you were an adult.. I’m glad you’re catching up now..and realize the importance of passing that knowledge to your son. Being an American is something to be proud of.. we truly are an exceptional people. We’ve allowed ourselves to be ”’politically corrected”’ and duped into a state of lethargy and stupidity, but I see a silver lining.. You may have been robbed of a great experience but you, and many more like you, are now realizing that, and are coming together as a unified group of Compatriots! I firmly believe that, with effort and determination we can retake our Nation and restore it to its once great stature.. we can pass along to our childen the Strength, Pride and Glory that once was America!

In the DVD at http://www.sightedmoon.com/?page_id=251 which you can watch for free I show you why these things James has pointed out are happening and will continue to happen. It is based on the Sabbatical and Jubilee cycles.

1995 was the 49th year Jubilee and 1996 was the first year of the next cycle. The curse that goes with this cycle is Terrorism. It is followed by sever weather and drought, then Earthquakes Famines and Pestilences and this is then followed by war and then captivity and starvation and canibaalism.

Much of what James has said is true. When you line it up with the Curses of teh Sabbatical and Jubilee cycles it will scare the pants off of you. Watch the DVD and then decide.

A good history lesson. I wish more people would listen, wake up and take action. I would only add one thig in the form of a question and the answer. What is the “one” common denominator to all these attacks? They were “all” carried out by Muslims. Can anyone seriously and honestly say Islam is a religion of peace? We are at war fellow Americans, allies and Christians. All of western civilization and in particular, Chritianity is at war and most don’t even realize it. Islam is as much a threat to world peace and prosperity than communism.

It makes good sense to store at least 30 to 90 days supply of food, water and the means to defend yourself when our fragile and overly controlled system can be effected by almost anything.
If the trains stop running for 3 days the shelves will be empty.
If the power goes down for 24-48 hours the shelves will be empty.
If we have a false flag or real terrorist attack the shelves will be empty.
If we have a run on the banks the shelves will be empty.
If we have a natural disaster…well you get the picture.

We all saw what happened at Katrina, the various government agencies were completely disorganized and jockeying for funding…so do NOT count on a government that seems hell bent on destroying us anyway.

I have been buying extra at the grocery store and like Bob I use out of it. I have been canning more each year and always have left-overs from the last year. So I use the oldest year and keep it going. But I need to do some dehydrating. You can dehydrate just about anything.I think that would be a good way to store meats, veggies and fruits. I do keep extra salmon. But if someone were to break into your home, what about a secret storage place? God bless us all. We must really pray.

I agree with you Bob. I only have beans, rice and flour stored. but I do have a garden and chickens. I live in the high desert mountains and it hasn’t gone below 40 degrees at night the last 3 winters, we have a year round growing season. you should always be prepared, I believe something devastating is headed our way.
