They Signed For Us

Happy Anniversary To Us

Tomorrow will mark a full year of Straight Talk columns for Personal Liberty Digest™. How time flies when you’re having fun! As many of you know, I also write two other, shorter features for Personal Liberty Digest™ every week—Chip Shots, which appears at the bottom of Friday’s columns, and This Week in History, which appears at the bottom of Wednesday’s.

As it happens, my very first piece for Personal Liberty Digest™ was about the incredible men who pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to secure liberty for us. So it seems only appropriate to repeat that message again today, as we prepare to celebrate our 234th Independence Day. Happy July 4!

Every schoolchild in America knows why we celebrate the Fourth of July. Flags and fireworks commemorate the day we declared our independence from Britain.

On July 4, 1776, after months of heated debate, representatives of the Continental Congress voted unanimously that, “These United Colonies are and of right ought to be Free and Independent States.”

Thirteen colonies voted to become something new in history—the United States of America. Now, all they had to do was win their independence from a government that would consider them traitors.

Fifty-six men bravely affixed their signatures to the Declaration of Independence. What sort of men were they? And what became of them?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, 11 were merchants and nine were farmers or plantation owners. They were well-educated men of means. All of them had a great deal to lose when they voted to defy what was then the most powerful nation on earth. Yet they willingly risked everything when they pledged to each other “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

As I said, all of us can explain why we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. But how many of us can name even a handful of the signers of the Declaration of Independence? How much do we know, really, about the men who risked their lives and everything they owned in the cause of freedom?

Because the story of the signers is so inspiring, we’ve arranged a special treat for you today—a free copy of a wonderful little book called They Signed For Us.

Half a century ago two patriotic ladies in the Midwest wanted to help others learn more about the remarkable men who signed the Declaration. Merle Sinclair and Annabel Douglas McArthur wrote a delightful book about the events of that time, including a history of each of the signers. They called it, They Signed For Us.

At the end of today’s column, you’ll find a link that will take you to a free copy of the book. You may read it online or download it and print your own copy. The file also includes a list of all of the signers and the states they represented, plus the complete text of the Declaration of Independence.

To whet your appetite a bit, here’s an excerpt from They Signed For Us.

“SUDDENLY THE BIG BELL in the State House steeple pealed joyously. The appointed signal! Cheers rose from the waiting crowds.

“‘Proclaim liberty throughout the land….’

“Cannon boomed, drums rolled. Church bells rang, sounding the death knell of British domination!

“News of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence spread like wildfire. Ready messengers leaped into their saddles to ride and spread the word. The Declaration had been ordered printed on a single large sheet, ’45.5 x 37.5 cm.,’ or approximately 18 inches by 15 inches. These broadsides were distributed with all possible speed, to be read in the provincial assemblies, pulpits, market places, and army camps.”

The story continues:

“On July 8, the Liberty Bell summoned citizens of Philadelphia to the State House yard for a public reading of the document. Colonel John Nixon mounted a high platform and spoke the noble lines in a strong, clear voice. The crowd, now hushed, listened intently throughout.

‘…for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.’”

It was almost a month later that the Declaration was engrossed on parchment and ready for signing by the delegates to the Continental Congress. Members gathered on Aug. 2 for the ceremony.

The only person who had signed the Declaration on July 4 was John Hancock, a delegate from Boston who had been elected president of the Continental Congress. He wrote his signature in large, bold letters and as he did, in a reference to the near-sightedness of the British king, he declared, “There! John Bull can read my name without spectacles and may now double his reward of £500 for my head. That is my defiance.”

As the delegates gathered around a desk to sign the Declaration, William Emery, one of the representatives from Rhode Island, moved as close as he could. “I was determined to see how they all looked as they signed what might be their death warrants,” he later wrote. “I placed myself beside the secretary, Charles Thomson, and eyed each closely as he affixed his name to the document. Undaunted resolution was displayed on every countenance.”

Contrasting with Hancock’s confident signature was the shaky scratch of Stephen Hopkins from Rhode Island. Hopkins was the second-oldest signer and suffered from palsy. As he handed the quill to the next person, he valiantly proclaimed, “My hand trembles, but my heart does not!”

As one or two delegates hung back, seemingly reluctant to add their signatures to such a momentous declaration, John Hancock encouraged them. “We must be unanimous,” he said. “There must be no pulling different ways. We must all hang together.”

Legend has it that Benjamin Franklin replied, “Yes, we must all hang together. Or most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

Happily, none of the signers was hanged by the British. But all of them were considered traitors to the Crown. And many of them suffered terribly for the cause they so ardently supported.

When New Jersey signer Richard Stockton returned to his home after signing the Declaration he learned that British troops were coming to arrest him. He fled to a neighbor’s house with his wife and children. But a Loyalist (as supporters of the British cause were called) betrayed the family’s hiding place. Here is how Merle Sinclair and Annabel Douglas McArthur describe what happened to him:

“The judge was dragged from bed and beaten, then thrown into prison. This distinguished jurist, who had worn the handsome robes of a colonial court, now shivered in a common jail, abused and all but starved.

“A shocked Congress arranged for his parole. Invalided by the harsh treatment he had received, he returned to [his home at] Morven to find his furniture and clothing burned, his fine horses stolen, and his library—one of the finest private collections in the country—completely destroyed. The hiding place of exquisite family silver, hastily buried, had been betrayed by a servant.

“The Stockton’s were so destitute that they had to accept charity. For the judge’s fortune was gone, too. He had pledged it and his life to his country. He lost both. He did not live to see the Revolution won.”

John Morton, a delegate from Pennsylvania, was the first of the signers to die. His last words for his family, before his death in April 1777 (just eight months after he signed the Declaration), were, “…tell them that they will live to see the hour when they shall acknowledge it to have been the most glorious service I ever rendered to my country.”

The following month Button Gwinnett, the commander in chief of Georgia’s militia, was badly wounded in a duel with a political opponent. He died a few days later—the second signer to die.

But by and large, the signers of the Declaration of Independence were a hardy bunch. Three of them lived until their 90s—a remarkable accomplishment in a time when most men did not see their 50th birthday.

Only two of the signers were bachelors. Sixteen of them married twice. Records indicate that at least two, and perhaps as many as six, were childless. But the other 50 signers were a prolific lot, having a total of 325 children between them! William Ellerey of Rhode Island had 17 children; Roger Sherman of Connecticut had 15.

Fifty years after the united colonies declared their independence from Britain, plans were made for jubilant celebrations on July 4, 1826. Only three of the original signers were still alive—Charles Carroll, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Here is how Sinclair and McArthur describe what occurred that day:

“In a dramatic climax that even their agile minds would not have contemplated, these two principals in the struggle for Independence left the nation awestricken and touched, by dying hours apart on the Fourth of July. Jefferson died at one o’clock in the afternoon, Adams toward evening.”

Ten days earlier Jefferson had written the mayor of Washington, expressing his regret that ill health prevented him from coming to the nation’s new Capitol to join the festivities.

“I should, indeed, with peculiar delight, have met… with the small band, the remnant of that host of worthies, who joined with us on that day, in the bold and doubtful election we were to make for our country, between the submission or the sword.”

And he concluded by writing, “Let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollection of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.”

As part of that “undiminished devotion,” we are delighted to provide you with a free copy of They Signed For Us. Please click here for it.

And please share this copy of Straight Talk with others you know so they may enjoy it as well. Just forward this column with a short note urging them to read about the incredibly brave patriots who won our freedom for us when They Signed For Us.

Until next time, keep some powder dry.

Saddest of all is that less than half of registered voters take the time to go to the polls.

    • ashforkdan

this november will be the largest number of voter in history trust me

    • George E

It doesn’t bother me that the uneducated and uninformed don’t vote. Nor does it bother me that people who don’t pay taxes, or who have never served in our military don’t vote.

Chip, Thanks for “They Signed for Us!
I am 75 yrs, so I learned all this in school! But I clearly forgot the names of all the people. And I want you to know that when I read that, it took me back and made me cry! Thanks again for the book!
Happy 4th all, and stay safe!

our education system has failed our citizens for the last forty years, few teachers have installed this knowledge in the children and consequently they do not have the respect for this country or its founders.
i don’t see this respect for the country in this present administration, its almost like barry has contempt, the people surrounding him are interested only in the ideology they can promote.
our technology is what makes this country great and prosperous and barry seems to have an agenda to dismantle our advancement in the field of space exploration such as nasa, when we lose the ability to advance our knowledge then we cave in to a third world country and it looks to me that’s where barry has us headed. i wonder if the founding fathers would set back and let someone destroy this country like barry and his troops are doing, i think not.

It’s a shame we have pulled the wrong guy from the wood pile to guide this great nation! I hope everyone has a safe and great 4th July!

We may have to fight a 2nd American Revolution

Please keep one of our own POW’s from Idaho in your prayers. He has been a POW now for a year. He was captured by the Taliban last year and is all alone. It’s one thing to have comrades to give you support (strength in numbers) but to be alone in a foreign country with no one is horrible. This young soldier is Bowe Bergdahl. They are dressing him and making him look more like them more and more…God give him and his family strength to endure this. Regardless of lies and deceit or who is in charge, these soldiers are still human and have families and are sacrificing their life, freedoms, health and comfort while in battle. True Bravery, Ultimate service to their country!

Here is a little about him for anyone that wants to know more about our American POW captured who will not have his independence this weekend.

Great article Chip. I did not get to read it last time as I am a new comer to this site. Thanks for the inspirational history lesson. The Fourth of July will be more meaningful for me and my family when I share this with them. We appreciate the download of the book “They signed for Us.”
I agree with Ben Franklin, “We must all hang together. Or most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”
    God Bless.

Wow, why didn’t I learn this in school. Maybe I just forgot but with what’s going on in this country now, I won’t forget again. Thanks for the history lesson.

It is a shame that we have aloud this great Nation to become what it is today. We like to point the finger at others and say it is their fault. But the truth be known, it is the fault of every American for sitting back and not demanding accountability of our elected officials and our courts. I just pray that enough of us will stop being the silent majority and start being the vocal majority.

As Chip says, God Bless America and keep some powder dry.

    Everyone have a good 4th.

  • ONTIME

I wish all who see this a Great 4th of July…..

I wish and hope that all who see this will remember who we are and how we came to all be Americans, our history, tradition and determination is a result of those men who were willing to put it all on the line to gain the liberty and practice the freedoms that to many have taken for granted….God Bless this country and all it stands for.

    • ashforkdan

I wonder where barry will be on the fourth playing golf or basketball i’m sure it wont be celibraiting our independence

  • Jud

Great article, every American should read. I’m passing it on to my email list. Ask a child today about this and I doubt they can answer you. That is progressive education, erase America History and glorify Europe History of bloodshed and murder of innocent people. History repeats itself if we didn’t learn from the past.

  • JC

Further to this wonderful article here is a Story of the Star Spangled Banner.
It demonstrates quite clearly the resolve of the Patriots who won us our Republic and our Freedom, the story of Patriots who paid in blood for what we have (collectively) allowed to be frittered away by money changers, progressives and globalists.

I hope you’ll take a minute and listen and maybe play this for your children or grandchildren and tell them what it really means to be an American.

    Keep your powder dry.

The incarnates of our ” Founders ” are being summoned today. It
will take men and women of similar courage and commitment to implement
drastic changes to turn our country around – to the Creator and the
    Constitution.

Check out GOOOH. Read Tim Cox’s, the founder, ” The GOOOH Revolution. Join and help save our country. With the spirit of the
” Founders ” it can happen.

  • Airangel

Churchill was quoted “a lie makes it halfway around the world before the truth puts its shoes on in the morning.” We have to have the courage to debunk all the lies being told to the people and somehow share the truth about candidates before the November elections and reclaim our Independence. With God’s mercy we can.

Let us restore our freedoms and God’s blessings upon us

    • Vicki

Use facebook and twitter (and others) to bypass the MSM and follow (or lead) the candidates we are looking for. The internet and social networks are how we defeat the MSM and lying politicians.

  • http://herringtons.home.mindspring.com lighterknot

Liberty and the liberal’s progressive enough to seek it for all men; are in league with the spirit of the founding fathers. Those who refuse to see the reality of the times are not enemies just dragging there feet in nostalgia.
One thing that sticks out above all else is SACRED HONOR something no man today can clam while condoning weapons of mass destruction. So don’t make me puke with your pseudo allegiance to God and Country.
It is a good article Chip Wood; we should contemplate with our deepest understanding of their times and the values that are eternal.
    Have a good 4th.

    • Vicki

Hmm. Weapons of mass destruction. That would be gattling gun, cannon, Catapults, fire brands, fire arrows, horses, colorful history of firecrackers in many sizes. All available and used in warfare in the 1700s.

The founders were particularly hated by the British for hiding behind trees instead of standing out in neat rows.

I do not think your definition of sacred honor is accurate.

      • JeffH

Vicki, there is no honor amongst those that don’t cherish their freedoms.

      • vicki

        Agreed.

  • http://AOL Carole Waltrip

    Lovely ! well done.

It is a shame that our forefathers could not have forseen Obama and the way the peoples of America have forgotten what it took to build this Great Country, and the men and women through the many years who have fought and dies to keep her freedoms. We have so many who demand to much from this country and give nothing back, that is the shame of America and the shame of the Voters wo continue to put That Ole Gang of Mine and people like Obama in the White House and Washington. I pray on this Fourth that the Peoples of America eill stand up in November and clean house of ALL who support Obama and his Socialistic attitude.

    • Vicki

Our forefathers DID foresee the possibility of an Obama. They wrote the Bill of Rights based on that knowledge. They wrote the natural born requirement into the Constitution based on their knowledge of allegiance, loyalty and humanity.

Ben Franklin even told a lady when asked what they (the founders) had created “A Republic M’am. If you can keep it”

They knew. (dramatic pause) They knew.

      • JeffH

Vicki, very true. The Founders recognized that governments depend on imperfect men, and they worried about the threat of an all-powerful central government, where the few dictate to the many. In 1787, as the Constitutional Convention completed its work to enshrine the principles of the Declaration into law, Ben Franklin famously said the Constitution established “a republic, if you can keep it.”

The fight to remain free continues today. Today’s progressives are enacting policies that expand government and limit our freedoms.

Te Declaration of Independence is one the greatest statements of human liberty ever written with its bold statements and timeless truths

Americans are faced with a new set of “Intolerable acts” — Wall Street bailouts; “stimulus” packages; cap-and-trade legislation; and, perhaps most harmful of all, Obamacare.

The Founders warned us of this ongoing threat to liberty: Thomas Paine once warned that “the greatest tyrannies are always perpetrated in the name of the noblest causes.”

Celebrate the 4th of July accordingly and have a happy 4th to all!

      • vicki

Just for amusement we should reprint the 19 specifics from the Declaration of Independence and compare them to recent government behaviors (Democrat AND Republican)

    • DaveH

It isn’t just Obama. We can’t let the Republicans off the hook for slowly eroding our rights and building government ever larger. We need to vote out the RINOs now and start fresh. I’m hoping that John McCain will be the first to go. And if Hayworth proves to be a RINO, we need to deal with him later.

      • Palin12

I hope Lisa Murkowsky will be the first RINO to go.

  • Delores Smith

    CHIP WOOD,
Thank you so much for this article. It will give me a more magnificent Fourth of July.

Yes, they signed for US. We have a moral contract with the Founders, and we’ve done a pretty miserable job of honoring that contract. As for those who never had any plans for honoring ANY contracts [moral, contractual, business, or any other variety], they’re called progressives, fascists, socialists, communists apostate ‘religious’ and NWO scum.
Our only hope is in the idea that God will take pity on America, and not let us suffer for many years of ignoring Him and the Founders. NO politician or wannabe “mortal god” can save ANYONE.

    • Richard Pawley

True, and the answer is daily pray that God works His will in all our lives. Never wish evil even on those who deserve it but if believers will pray, God will answer, changing the hearts of some Congressmen, and taking home others, and defeating others. Always pray that He works His will on all, and in these ever-more-growing troubled times, Washington especially. We cannot expect leaders who are more moral than we are but we can demand ones who believe in our country and in the Constitution they swore to uphold.

  • William Ludi

Thankyou for the free download of THEY SIGNED FOR US

  • Ardie

What an amazing history lesson! Thank you! As I read it, I experienced pride, tears, and a heart wrenching feeling for what our bold founding fathers went through for their freedom. How far we’ve come from that way of thinking. We need to find our way back and be heard NOW. THANK YOU Tea Party! God bless America!!!

  • CJ

It is interesting how, over time, humans forget the true value of actions like our Founding Fathers participated in. We live such a “protected” life style, we loose the significance. When we forget the true cost, we devalue what we have. Over the last 100+ years, the elected has slowly brought back upon us the tyranny we abhored. I only hope we haven’t awakend too late to stop it. I pitty those who are still blinded to the true intent of the progressives. They are NOT our friends.

    • Al Sieber

      Amen.

      • http://www.freedomspitchfork.blogspot.com Freedom’s Voice

So very true. I think Americans are waking up but I only hope we have awakened in time and in enough numbers to make a difference. I pray to God we have.

      • Earl, QUEENS, NY

I agree with you, Freedom’s Voice. But it’s a pity that Americans didn’t wake up sooner – prior to the disastrous 11/4/2008 election!! The best thing Americans can do now is start reading sites like this, and listen to conservative talk radio hosts instead being duped by the leftwing Democraps and their allies in the lamestream media!!…..And hopefully voters will be awake enough in 2012 to make 1/20/2013 ‘THE END OF AN ERROR’!!

      • Richard Pawley

NO, NO, NO! Of course we must vote out who we can in 2012 but if we wait until then it will be two years to late. Only if we can replace most of the 111th Congress in the first week of November in 2010 will we even have a chance of preventing the planned catastrophe for our nation (I say planned because I cannot believe that those in Congress are so ignorant they do not know what they are doing). If we can figure out that the insane spending is going to wreck both the country and the dollar, then surely they can as well). By 2012 we will have a different country from what we have now. If freedom loving Americans don’t rise up to vote out those who would destroy our economy and the dollar by their insane spending of borrowed money will we have a chance of saving the USA we know and love. Already monies squandered by Congress are going to result in food prices and fuel and imported goods tripling in price, not this year, maybe not next, but it cannot be stopped as it takes time to work its way through the system. Congress is trying furiously to cause inflation. So far they have not succeeded BUT THEY WILL. If we can replace most of the 111th Congress this November we will have a chance at slowing this down. Otherwise the words of Ben Franklin will have proved prophetic (when asked by a citizen who saw him come out of the great assembly of new Americans what kind of government had been decided upon, he said, “A Republic, if you can keep it!”). We are in danger of losing it and a restoration to the sound values of the Tea Party Candidates, regardless of party, come this November, is the first step towards a return of the government to the people and away from the 36,000 lobbyists and special interests that have controlled the country for at least 60 years. VOTE THIS NOVEMBER LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED UPON IT, BECAUSE IT MIGHT!

  • http://www.truedawnrising.blogspot.com Jerry D

Nothing can be added. It’s sad that we don’t have such men standing up for us in Congress today. God bless and thanks for the great article. God bless America.

    • Earl, QUEENS, NY

Jerry D. I agree with you, but not 100%. We have to remember that there are still some good senators and Congressmen. And we do need more Michelle Bachmans, DeMints, Inhofes, etc. But sadly, they’re outnumbered by the Democrap majority IN D.C., and even some RINOs. The 2010 and 2012 elections are critical. In the primaries, we need to target RINOs and GOP wimps who too often side with Democraps. More importantly, in the general elections, we need to defeat as many democraps as possible, as I believe their party is over 90% responsible for our sick economy and loss of freedom. While some are not as leftwing as others, we need to remember that THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A CONSERVATIVE IN TODAY’S DEMOCRAP PARTY!!!!!

  • Al Sieber

Now the founding fathers would be considered terrorists by the Dept. of Homeland Security.

    • http://www.truedawnrising.blogspot.com Jerry D

Sadly, that’s absolutely true. As a matter-of-fact, that’s probably exactly the government’s opinion of all of us who believe as the Founding Fathers.

      • Christin

That is exactly what the Government and Homeland Security think of every patriotic American… Terrorists. That was no mistake when the pamphlet came out early in this administration by Janet Napalitano (backed up by the WH) stating that veterans, pro-life, religious … (can’t even remember who all they included)… Americans from the Heart Land and Bible Belt were called Terrorists. That was no mistake… we are in the way of THEIR AGENDA to change America.

The only way I see America recovering is if we pray, repent and put God BACK in every aspect of our American lives. The Bible has revealed our fate… read Revelations.

      • http://PersonLibertyDigest Dee

It’s the idiots that are in Washington D.C. now that are the terrorists. They want to ruin this country or take complete control of it. Do not let this happen. Vote them out.

      • ashforkdan

the revolution that took so many lives was well worth it i for one will not let a lying want to be muslim take down the greatest country and most patriotic people of all times for the love of god people lets take back what we fought for and died for this little puke is not going win and he is not anyway a threat to the strongest nation in the world we started this nation under god and now its time to repeat history and show what we are made of

      • Vicki

It’s certainly what King George and the red coats thought of the founders.

    • Tony

I am amazed by all the natural disasters we’ve have been experiencing lately, as well as our leaders political disasters. Maybe its our forefathers turning in their graves. It is a travesty what the president is trying to do to the USA.

      • http://none Alex

Did you ever stop to think that maybe God is as sick of America as so many of us are?

      • JC

No. I think it’s possible that he has filled our halls of government with evil in order to test us and our resolve to return to civilized ways.
