Red Wine Compound May Help Seniors Stave Off Certain Eye Diseases

July 1, 2010 by

Red wine compound may help seniors stave off certain eye diseases Results of a new Washington University study suggest that older individuals may be able to help prevent certain eye diseases by consuming moderate amounts of red wine.

Lead investigator Rajendra Apte and her colleagues found that resveratrol—a compound commonly found in red wine, grapes, blueberries and peanuts—is capable of inhibiting the formation of new blood vessels, a condition known as angiogenesis.

Individuals who suffer from extensive blood vessel growth often develop blinding eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Earlier studies have also found that angiogenesis may contribute to the development of certain cancers and atherosclerosis—the hardening of the arteries.

In the animal study, resveratrol successfully prevented the growth of new blood vessels in the eyes and even eradicated abnormal vessels that had already developed.

"We have identified a novel pathway that could become a new target for therapies," Apte said. "And we believe the pathway may be involved both in age-related eye disease and in other diseases where angiogenesis plays a destructive role."

The highest levels of resveratrol are found in red wine and grape skin. For more information about resveratrol, click here.

  1. DAS says:

    This is a CROCK…ALCOHOL IS A POISON

    • Norm says:

So Jesus drank poison. At the wedding feast of Cana Christ turned water to wine. Was that to poison the guests as well?
Alcohol is only evil for the weak and stupid who have no self control.

      • Fed Up Gal in NM says:

        Norm,

Hmmmmm…..it appears DAS simply read as far as the word “Wine” and no further. His/Her response seems like a good example of jumping to conclusions without having all the facts….kind of sad for him/her.

BTW – I agree with your comments (about those who relinquish self control, then scream “Crock” when alternative information is offered).

  2. Terri says:

Alchol is bad IF it is abused. One drink with dinner is not going to send you rolling in the gutter unless you are already an alcholic. I would stop short of saying only the weak or the people without control become alcholics. I don’t think science truly knows the root cause of the disease. That being said – if one does not care to drink wine the article does list grapes, blueberries and peanuts, so you have alternatives. Otherwise give proof that the article is bunk.

  3. Hank says:

Relax, it’s the “resveratrol”, and you can buy capsules of that at most vitamin supplement or natural health stores without the sin tax.

  4. cb says:

You can also get enough of red wine reveratrol by taking opc3 through market america.

  5. Delores Smith says:

I don’t know if drinking wine will do the trick, but I will bet you no one would care if they were blind.

  6. Norman says:

I’ll do my best to prevent blindness. I should have 20/20 vision but I don’t. I’ll try harder.

Chill out, people. Some of you sound like conditioned parrots. Some of you sound like you work for the FDA and their Nazi flunkies. A ‘red wine compound’ is not the same as alcohol.
If it was that simple (anything related to alcohol), the French (and the Italians) would have become extinct a long time ago. The French tend to be healthier than Americans, and they do NOT hesitate to enjoy wine and/or rich foods.
Stop acting like Pavlov’s dogs and parrots. Red wine compounds have the potential to make people healthier (especially vision and vascular problems). The article deals with COMPOUNDS – not alcohol.
Do some reading. Ask some questions. Stop acting like progressives who react on cue, and rarely have both feet in the real world. Life is too complex as it is. Chill out, boys and girls. This is about a health issue – not schizoid politics.

  8. It will surprise many reading article like this, to find out that much of the information touted as news these days has been repeatedly published around the planet for decades. It is [often] nothing but updated data, (rehashed to hide its history, or origin) regurgitated for self-serving reasons.
When in doubt; a little bit of time invested in your private-research will provide great dividends.
