Barbara Bush Speaks Out In Support Of Healthcare Reform

June 18, 2010 by

Barbara Bush speaks out in support of healthcare reform Children of prominent politicians rarely talk publicly in support or against big policy issues, but one of the daughters of former President George W. Bush did just that on Sunday when she appeared on Fox News.

Barbara Bush said that she was glad the Democrat-backed healthcare reform passed and was signed into law by President Obama in March.

"Why do, basically, people with money have good healthcare, and why do people that live on lower salaries not have good healthcare?" she asked during the interview, adding that access to medical care should be considered everyone’s right.

The statement, while welcome by supporters of the reform, has raised eyebrows in more conservative circles.

Opponents of the legislation, a large group that includes most Republicans as well as other free market advocates, have argued that expanding the role of Federal government in the health sector and imposing insurance coverage mandates will increase costs, reduce efficiency, stifle innovation and could even be unconstitutional.

Barbara Bush founded Global Health Corps, a nonprofit organization that provides financial support to recent college graduates who spend a year working in the area of public health in under-served areas of the United States or in Africa.

NORMA MILLER: Not sure we will ever be able to vote again. We shall see in November.

  • susy stin

While I always was a Bush supporter, until recently after learning things, I think everyone should know that Bush 1 is a member of the Caryle Group – global rule and global economy. Now, Bush 2 admires his father immensely. So stands to reason that Bush 2 is a member of the same group. Thus the opinion from his daughter. Think about it – Bush while in office – was this the man we thought he was? No. He is his father’s son. I think we Americans have been blind and stupid for over a hundred years (with the 8 years of Reagan being the exception). All the Bushes are thought of as gracious and giving. Yes, they sure are – giving enough to help set the tone to give our country away. They will never feel the effect of it though – cronieism.

    • Allan

What if Bush sat in his house and alledged various evil associations by you, and began publicly stating them? How would you like it?

  • Claire

Seems like the children of past presidents have “grown up.” Now they speak their minds. Look at Cheney’s daughter. She never keeps her mouth shut. I never hear anything about Chelsea, only when she campaigned for her mother. It seems she doesn’t have an opinion about anything since she is never in the media’s eye. This generation has different thoughts, ideals, etc. They learn it from observing their parents, the colleges they attend, the media, and from other people. I hope they mature into decent adults, and do not follow in the paths of their parents.

While I agree everyone is entitled to an opinion, Barbara Bush’s theory that everyone is entitled to health care is absurd. How would she like it if Obama said everyone poor is entitled to live the same lift style as Barbara Bush and let’s do a super tax to all the Trust Fund Babies since they think the poor should have the same healthcare as the wealthy-why not give them the same lifestyle…afterall they have been poor all their lives and Barbara and Jenna have so much to give.
You have the “haves and have nots”. Unfortunately those who are unable to pay for their own health care are now more than ever before bankrupting our country…the only difference is for when the elite speak their minds. Unfortunately most people don’t have the same advantages as young Barbara. I don’t mind her standing on a soap box with Obama, I just terribly resent when the wealthy and mislead have the audacity to take my hard earned money and waste it on taxes for what they deem socially correct. Let them spend their money. I worked long and hard for what I have and resent the fact that I will have to continue working long after most seniors have retired to pay for someone else’s wellbeing because they are too lame to take care of themselves. Obama should have left healthcare alone….he attempted to refocus everyone’s attention from all the harm the Democrats have done to our Republic. Unfortunately, I don’t have the same trust fund that the Bush’s twins have.

In response to her ridiculous question as to have people with money have good healthcare and those that live on lower salaries not have good healthcare. I suppose I question her degree from Yale. Her question borders on juvenile. She & Obama certainly should realize that many poor people simply feel they are entitled to get something for nothing.

How many Americans are aware that in the Port Chester N.Y., Hispanics are allowed to cast multiple votes per the directive of a fedral judge and the U.S. Department of Justice as part of a new election system crafted to help boost Hispanic representation. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100615/ap_on_el_st_lo/us_voting_rights_election
I suspect this is just the beginning of the end for the Republic of the United States of America. How sad it is!

We have universal Health Care here in Canada…which by the way served me quite well when I need surgery a few years ago…didn’t have have to wait month’s on end to be seen by a doctor or get my surgery… And so far I haven’t seen it bankrupting our country. So the very idea that universal health care will bankrupt your country is a fallacy rooted in sheer greed, egotism and selfishness of the ones who promote the very idea. A lot of you guys are like selfish little brats whose only mantra is “me me me…and screw the other guy who doesn’t ‘have’…he makes me look better because I do.” Wake up already America…times have changed!!! We’re in a new era, and regardless of what country we’re in, we’re all doomed unless we pull together and work together to make a better life for EVERYONE. THAT IS OUR HUMAN RIGHT!!!

Oh and, can some people who posted messages here, take the time to learn to spell properly? No wonder the English language has become so bastardized….

      • Allan

Are you not aware that private health vouchers are now being offered by Canadian doctors to compensate for deficiences of the national system? Are you not aware of where it is heading financially?

      • http://naver samurai

Sorry, but we should be telling our young people that they’re not entitled to anything they don’t earn. No hand outs, lady! Don’t you get it? Different country and different founding, so stay up north where you belong.

      • Smilee

Thanks for telling it like it is and so many on this thread are exactly as you describe, sad !!

      • http://naver samurai

You really need to stop drinking the kool aid and get a life!

      • Smilee

        samurai

You really do have a problem seeing the truth and accepting that fact, you believe what you want this law to what you want it to be and not what it really is, you need to quit repeating the far right wing propaganda, but then you would have to look at things with an open mind which you seem to not have so my guess is you are out of luck.

      • http://naver samurai

Sorry dude, I don’t read propaganda, don’t have cable, etc. I remember growing up and my parents telling me that. I also told my 4 kids and that’s why 3 of them have gone to college. By studying, hard work, discipline, and scoring well on test to enter college. They have kept up those ways by each one have better than a 3.5 GPA. They earned the right to go to college. If this president had some “guts” (For lack of a better word.), he would stand in front of “WE THE PEOPLE” and declare an end to the self destructive welfare state, sanctifying everyone on it as having a problem. He should remind them that this country was built and preserved by people who refused to be victims. Hand outs and welfare programs were NEVER AUTHORIZED by our Constitution or any of our founding documents. Another thing, don’t forget that self reliance and personal responsibility are also beliefs that many of us have. No one is responsible to give these people insurance but themselves. They should work and pay for their own policy, not the government.

      • Smilee

        WOW

You sure inject a lot into the Constitution that is not there.

Your quite the bragget too aren’t you

      • http://naver samurai

Smilee, you really need to read “Common Sense” by Thomas Paine. It’ll open your eyes. The things I have said earlier, my children did the work. All I did was the normal parent things of having them study, do homework, obey your mother and I, clean your room and prayed a lot. That’s basically what the average parent does. Some may do more or less, but I guess you can say that I’m proud of what my children have done, with God’s help, yes, I am. Can you say that same things about your legitimate children? My oldest son will graduate with his Masters of Science in chemistry and then will go to Army OCS in September. Another reason to be proud of my children. They don’t believe in hand outs, “Osama”care, or people being too lazy to work (Sloth is one of the 7 deadly sins). If you wish, I can give you my son’s e-mail address or have him post on this site. Guaranteed he won’t be as nice to you and your lib trash belief as I have been. Let’s take our country back from these spineless leaders in Congress, libs, commies, atheists, etc., and bring it back to the ways of our christian founding fathers! Let’s regain our “Common Sense.” For God and country!

      • Smilee

Wow, your BS gets deeper and deeper, you one sick dude!!!

  • Steve S.

FINALLY, a Bush that gets it. Too bad she didn’t speak up while Dad was in the White House. Maybe after Rick Scott gets his butt kicked running for Florida’s Governor he can become our Health care Czar. Oh wait didn’t he own and operate HCA, the company that owns all those Hospitals? Oh, that’s right, they had had to pay a 1.7 billion dollar fine for defrauding Medicare. Medicare, that’s the Socialized medicine that everyone wants to keep isn’t it? We can always go back to letting the Insurance companies denying us care when we get sick after paying all our premiums.

    • Allan

Thousands of doctors and other healthcare professionals have defrauded medicare. Oops, I guess we’ll need them due to provider shortages. Obamacare, run by a corrupt and incompetent government/union will surely fix it. Hey, I know, let’s give everybody in jail obamacare immediately and they will become honest people. Feel the healing at work.

      • Steve S.

        Alan,
I see the Doctors list for my health Insurance and there hasn’t been any mass exodus of Providers. If anything the list keeps getting larger. You really should stop listening to the propaganda be spread by Beck and Hannity, they don’t know what they are talking about. And by the way prisoners have had State paid health care since forever.

      • http://naver samurai

What part of unconstitutional do you not understand? The Obama bin Laden heathcare plan is a direct violation of the 10th Amendment to the Constitution. This plan will just increase the size of our welfare state, which really needs to be abollished at all costs. Remember, you are NOT ENTITLED to anything that you don’t earn. The days of handouts are hopefully coming to an end. For God and country!

      • Paterfamilias

You’re absolutely sure about that 10th Amendment business, are you? How about that bit in the Constitution about promoting the general welfare?

      • http://naver samurai

Dude, you need to go back down south of the border where you belong. If it isn’t against the Constitution, immoral, and unethical, then why are so many states (Like Indiana) filing injunctions in federal court against it? Remember our founding principles of self reliance, personal responsibility, and the vision to ensure that government remain our servents and not our masters (That’s limited government!). The welfare state we have set up, thanks to the libs, is self destructive and needs to be gotten rid of very soon. You should know that what I say is true. Just look up the Constitution and find out. If that’s not good for you then read “The American Republic” and “The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History”. These also will open your mind.

      • Smilee

        Samurai

Article one section eight trumps the 10th amendment making it this law constitutional, it is you who fails to understand the constitution and defines it based on far right wing propaganda instead of the what the constitution actually says and does.

      • http://naver samurai

Let’s also not forget “The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States.

      • http://naver samurai

Ah yes, the ignorant Smilee! Long time, no see! Well, till you can prove my sources wrong, you cannot make a stand on how this unconstitutional legislation is the ways of our christian founding fathers. The federal government doesn’t have the right to force legislation on the states and the people who live within them. Take your lib crap somewhere else. They’ll probably like you in Iran or Russia!

      • Smilee

        samurai

You are one messed up dude, you have no concept of what the constitution is or says. Christian or God or Jesus are not mentioned in the constitution, it is a secular document that separates religion from the state without any mention of the Christian religion and these restrictions apply equally to all religions. The words of the constitution is the only document that counts. weather it was written by Christians or not is irrelevant, what it actually says is all that counts and you have read into it all your own biases and thus your confused conclusions. It is you that should grow up and get a life.

      • http://naver samurai

You should talk Smilee. Your flip-flopping rival that of John Kerry.

If you are on Medicare, then don’t count on the Mayo Clinic for treatment. They have announced that as of the first of the year, they will no longer accept Medicare patients!!!!

That only applies to one of their facilities

Actually GW was responsible for Medicare drug coverage, and was not all that opposed to improving the quality of life in the US.

      • Smilee

        samurai

Not a chance, even if by a long shot it where reversed by congress it will be vetoed by the president and a veto override is impossible whatever the election outcome is. The other route is through the courts and that will fail as it is constitutional. You are such a dreamer and totally out of touch with reality.

      • http://naver samurai

It seems you are somewhat mistaken. Do not forget that if the president vetoes something, the Congress and Senate can override his veto by having a certain % of the vote to override it. Get your facts straight before you post. Second, my family thinks that after these elections, the courts will begin hearing the cases at hand. Indiana has already filed an injustion against it and will not start the insurance process till everything is settled. How long will it take? I don’t know that, but isn’t it amazing that you say you are so up on the Constitution, then this bill comes along and you are for it? Are you sure your name isn’t John Kerry? You seem to be doing a bunch of flip-flops on this post!

      • Norm

        samurai
It takes a 2/3 majority to over ride a presidential veto. The latest polls indicate that, while there will be Republican gains, the Dems will maintain control of both houses.

      • Smilee

        samuria

I acknowledged that it would take an override by congress that is 67 senators and 291 house members and I do not think that even you are dumb enough to believe that is possible, there will be no injunctions, I believe it will go all the way to the SC and then it will be found constitutional. No flip flops only that the Constitution says it is constitutional and you refuse to believe that and are hanging on to the far right wing propaganda to support your spin or more accurately your BS.

      • http://naver samurai

Frownlee and abnorm, you are right on the % you need to override a presidents veto, but if you think the dems are going to retain control, you are sadly mistaken. Reid, Boxer, and others are either losing or its a dead heat. Look for some real “CHANGE” to take place after November. For God and country!

Even if the republicans were lucky enough to win control which I sinceely doubt they would be no were close to be able to override a veto, only a fool would think that and it appears you do think that.

  • Noel

Dear Barbara, I have a lot of respect for your parents but it’s people like you that elected Obama in the first place. Surely, you are not your Daddy’s daughter. You haven’t the slightest idea as what you are propounding nor the results thereof. Stop and consider what this Government run (Obamacare) health program has done to our country. Certainly, if you were one of these recipients of this free health care program you would feel compelled to vote for the party that made it possible for such coverage. Let’s consider such a scenario come Novermber 2010 when the 30 million recipients of this program votes for the party that was responsible for such coverage, votes Democratic, our country will be hard pressed to elect a Republican controlled House and Senate.

  • J.M.R.

well when she was asked if she wanted brains or beauty. guess which she took.

    • Smilee

      jmr

It appears to me she is the lucky one as she got both brains and beauty

  • http://don'thaveone Norma Miller

I respected and like Pres. Bush and still do. But his daughter, Barbara, is mixed up. True, it would be nice if the poor had good health insurance, but the rest of us worked and paid for ours. I think this young generation wants a lot of things, but they do not want to work to get it. Believe me, working is the best way. I worked many, many years and so did my husband. And that’s the way we paid for our health insurance. B.Obama and congress don’t want to be under the insurance they have planned for us. They think they are better than us. I say not. There are some disabled and unhealthy people who cannot work, so we’ll help them. But most of them are just too lazy to get out and work. We were healthy, but we did suffer some times and hurt a lot. Nevertheless, working is the best way, and God intended it. We were not born rich, did not inherit anything material, but my dad worked hard and taught us good character. He did not have money, so we are not among the rich. But I don’t think the young generation should have all that they want while their parents or grandparents suffer to give it to them. They need to open their eyes and see that some of the people they call “poor” are not really poor, they are just too lazy to work for their needs. They have “off the wall” reasoning, and are not in the right. We should care for others, and most of us who work, do. There are terrorists who do not really care even for their own people. They pretend to fight for their false god, but they don’t really care for anyone but themselves. They have no compassion for the children in their country. They have evil thoughts that are directed by the devil; yet, they think they are in the right. NOT SO! The government, as someone has already said in these comments, should support and defend the constitution of our country. They should not be in health business, car business, abortion business or anything else. I have much more respect for the founders of our country than those clowns in our congress. Their thoughts are warped, against God, and yet they try to govern our people, and try to spend our taxpayer money which is in the wrong way. How can a Holy God bless such people? They are not blessed. They better enjoy their high-faluting life here on earth, because when it’s over, they will answer to a Holy God what they did with the brains that God gave them, and with the body and heart that He gave. They are the ones that will be at the bottom of the spectrum, and the good, hard-working honest people will be at the top! There are a few (very few) people in government who are there for the right motives, and they honor God. They are just as disheartened about the way our country is turning out as we are. When we get to vote again, let’s think twice about who we want to be in a leadership position. When it’s all said and done, the words we say don’t amount to much. Only our VOTE!

    • Brenda

Well said. My father’s greatest gift was a work ethic. Nothing worthwhile is free. Those who expect something free have no idea that someone foots the bill. That’s right, it’s those of us who work hard, and pay our taxes. If the government breaks our backs where will the money for this Health Care Plan come from? What will the quality of that health care be? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that it will be bad, very bad!

    • Paterfamilias

Funny, but I didn’t see any of that stuff in the Bible. Sounds like your God is some kind of Social Darwinist.

      • http://naver samurai

Sorry, but it does say in the Bible that we should guard against being lazy. They are also following our founding principles of self reliance and personal responsibility. Name your sources and post them. If what you say is true, then your god isn’t the real one.

To imagine that the people in power don’t do everything they can to keep that power is every bit as loopy.
But we don’t need to know who the conspirators are or if they even exist. We could simply get this country back to the intention of the Founders – maximum personal freedom, free markets, and limited Government. Without the force of the Government, those shadow people couldn’t get away with their shenanigans.

      • http://naver samurai

Its the christian aspect of freedom. If its illegal, immoral, or unethical, we don’t have the right to do these things under the U.S. Constitution. You said it right. She’s a product of her generation. Not evil, just mistaken.

  • Smith

An nother that don’t have to worry about there health care she was lucky to have good heath care all her life. If she did she woudent make a statement like that.

  • Cecil Sloan

Health Care should not be mandatory if you can’t afford to buy it then the rest of us will I am retired I pay for my health care we don’t need a non citizen telling us how to run our country

  • ronalld lebleu

Sorry but she don’t have too worry about having too use this system – she is in the class as the president and the democrates. they have there own health care. IF this is so GOOD why oran’t they on it.

    • Amy Emerson

I concurr! The elected officials should have to be on the SAME health care program they suggest for all of US!

  • Dean

The Bushes are just puppets of the New World Order. They have betrayed our trust time and time again. Neal, Goergie W., George H.W.,
the whole clan is as corrupt as they get. Why would we buy into the ditzy daughter and her stupidity as well. Just look to the latter parts of W. tenure as president, he was a yes man for corporatism, and set into motion the fascist power grab that is Obama. Bush 41 presided over the S&L scandal. Corruption to the highest level, why would we think anything else about the progeny of the devil.

the obama health care plan is nothing more than a power grab by the government, go anywhere that has a state run health care program and you will see that most people have to wait months to see a doctor to have the health issue looked at

    • Dave

IT IS NOT A STATE RUN HEALTHCARE PLAN!!!!!!!!!! STOP CALLING IT THAT. IT IS STILL PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE. LEARN TO READ!!!

      • Paul

Dave it IS a STATE run health plan totally and completely regulated by the FEDS! Did you read the bill? It’s stated right in the text of the bill that it will be federally regulated! That’s what the Obummer Administration is all about. Fortunately American’s are waking up and beginning to realize that this “President” doesn’t care one thing about what John Q. Public thinks! He WORKS FOR US! He isn’t king he is a public servant elected to do the WILL OF THE PEOPLE! 55% of the American People said NO to Obummer Care yet he, PIGlosi, Reid, & the rest of the liberal puke in Congress rammed it down our throats anyway! The people be damned!

      • usmadgirl

        Paul,

        You’re exactly right!

      • http://naver samurai

Dave Obama bin Laden forced this healthcare plan down the throats of the average neglected American, which more than 60% DID NOT WANT! Not only is it federally run, but it is a violation of the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. If it was private insurance, then why have so many states had injuctions filed in federal courts across this great country to cease its operations before they even get started? Why would so many doctors across America be willing to go somewhere else to practice instead of abiding by this bill being passed? Stop drinking the kool aid and wake up. This health care bill is unconstitutional and NOT what our christian founding fathers wanted. You know, limited government? It is even against our founding principles of self reliance and personal responsibility. For God and country!

      • http://naver samurai

I don’t know so much about the extreme position, but we need to abollish the self destructive welfare state and tell the people that this country was built and preserved by those who refuse that way of life. It is also never intended by our founding fathers and never authorized by the Constitution. The days of lazy, non working people, also the illegals, getting hand outs are over. Have the people of this country go out and work for their keep (Earn what they need.). I don’t care what the job is, there are jobs available out there and all they have to do is go read the classifieds in the newspaper, internet sites, or go to the local employment office. If the job doesn’t pay much, so what? Start off with that and work your way up.

Oh look….all the unemployed ACORN workers are at in again, get a life guys, you are truly pathetic, just like your President. When “We The People” take over the house in senate in November, this bill is history!!

Want to Bet!! not a chance, will never happen, even if the majority changed overriding Barrack’s veto would take 67 senators and 291 representatives and if you believe that is possible you are even crazier than I thought

  • bsfurg

what did she say? dindt quite understand it… we have to go to Africa to get good health care? lol

  • Claire

This is what we call freedom of speech. We can say anything we want for the most part. Perhaps she will backtrack if this becomes a big “item” in the media world. The last sentence in the above article says it all.

    • Richard Pawley

I’m for healthcare reform too. To bad we didn’t get it. You cannot eat the typical foods Americans eat and not get the typical diseases that Americans get. All other countries tell their citizens when their groceries contain unnatural genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) but not the United States. Our government allows the fact that 80% of the foods in our supermarkets to contain such. If you care as much as I do about that you can learn more by going here:

I don’t think that Bush would have gone along with this bill. He may have tried to pass some laws on the insurance companies, but he wouldn’t have went for this “Osama” care, a blatant violation of the 10th Amendment.

      • Smilee

        samurai

Your opinion may be correct never the less it is just your opinion as Bush has not spoken one way other, so your opinion is all just an assumption on your part as is your statement on the 10th amendment as you want us to believe the 10th amendment trumps the rest of the constitution but the rest of the constitution trumps the 10th amendment, when any part of the rest of the constitution specifically states otherwise then the tenth amendment is null and void as is the case here. The constitution is the supreme law and trumps the 10th amendment in this case. As usual you inject your own spin on the real facts and thus misstate it

      • James

Samurai, I agree. The 10th Amendment reminded Congress that not all powers were delegated to the federal government, nor were all powers delegated to state governments. Article I, Section 8, in the U.S. Constitution, enumerates the powers that were delegated to the feds, and no mention is made therein of ‘healthcare’. The 10th Amendment is just part of the Bill of Rights, which made it clear that “Congress shall make no law respecting” the rights mentioned therein. Rights were off limits to the federal government. However, our problem, today, is that most Americans don’t know that they believe the Bill of Rights is our rights, rather than a bill of donts.

You simpleton’s cannot understand the Constitution if it does not use terms within your realm of your ability to understand it. No, the word health care is not used in Article one, section eight but that does not mean it is not included in one of the categories listed. Health care is a part of our general welfare. Many things constitutional have not specifically been so defined but are still included and this but one of many. I know many of you here do not like this law but it is wrong to try to spin the law to fit your own desires rather than if it is really constitutional based on what the Constitution actually says rather than what you would like it to say.

    • Steve

We already have national Healthcare, it’s been here since 1946, it’s called Hill Burton Insurance .Free healthcare doesn’t advertize. look up “Hill Burton Act” Obama’s real name is Barry Soetoro, look that one up too!
