Oil Spill Cleanup Fund Up In The Air

June 16, 2010 by

Oil spill cleanup fund up in the airEarlier this week, the Obama administration vowed to press BP to set up an escrow account to pay for the oil spill damage along the Gulf Coast, but recent reports suggest the deal appears to be stalling.

Still at issue are the size of the fund, the question of a third-party administrator and whether BP shareholders would have to approve the transfer of money, according to BusinessWeek, which cited anonymous sources.

The news comes as President Obama is scheduled to meet today with BP CEO Tony Hayward and Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg at the White House, but there are indications he is planning to pursue the matter further.

In last night’s speech from the Oval Office, Obama said that he will tell Svanberg "that he is to set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company’s recklessness."

The administration’s moves are being closely watched by environmental and civil rights groups. In a recent letter to Obama, the Environmental Defense Fund called for allocating money within the escrow account explicitly for habitat restoration along the coast.

Meanwhile, the American Association for Justice urged the government to find a solution that will "protect Gulf coasters, not shield BP."ADNFCR-1961-ID-19841119-ADNFCR

It should not be possible to have a White House that activly engages in shake-downs and extortion. Yet, this is exactly what we have. Being what he is, Obummer will, if he can, use those billions of dollars for purposes that have NOTHING to do with cleaning up an oil spill.
Once again, we are stuck with a prez who hates the Constitution, will use and abuse it, and has no plans for coming close to honoring his oath(s). The Founding Fathers would be hard-pressed to put into words their anger in knowing that someone in the White House can be so hateful and so devious that it’s all but impossible to tell the difference between his acts and those of a career criminal.

Boy are you confused, BP had no legal obligation to put up this fund, I’m sure they felt it to be in their best interest and the Obama administration will play no role in the monies distribution, The same person administrating the fund is the same mn that administered th 9-11 fund for the bush administration an he is widely recognized as totally non partisan and he proved trust worthy with the 9-11 fund and will do so here as well. THis is not extortion by anyone but a win win situation for BP, the coast recipients the gulf and the government
