It’s part of a nightly bombardment of Border Patrol vehicles and agents all along the southwestern border.

Chris Van Wagenen, a senior patrol agent, says “it’s mostly going to be smugglers, guides, gangbangers basically. People who make money off of this.

“This” means smuggling people and drugs into the U.S. It’s gotten a lot harder to cross the border, and smugglers are reacting to more fences and more agents with more violence.

“They believe, almost like a terrorist, ‘we’re going to intimidate you and hurt you until you back off,’” Van Wagenen says.

Assaults against agents in the Yuma sector have shot up to 126 in the first six months of this fiscal year. That’s approaching the number of assaults all last year.

Agent Ben Vick was lucky he was wearing a helmet when this brick hit his head.

“I looked down and though, ‘Oh, that’s what hit me.’ Because before that, I had no idea. It was just such a huge blow,” Vick says.

With cameras mounted on Agent Vick’s vehicle, CBS News set out to see what happens just after dark. A rock quickly hit the car.

“It gives you an idea of what we have to deal with down here. Things being thrown over the fence — heavy things,” Vick says

Agent’s death highlights attacks on Border Patrol..IMPERIAL SAND DUNES, Calif. — The off-road enthusiasts were revving their dune buggies and all-terrain vehicles Saturday morning when a brown Hummer suddenly cut into the campground. The man at the wheel, a suspected drug smuggler, was heading to Mexico, fast.

U.S. Border Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar, the only person in the way, threw a spike strip in front of the car. The Hummer sped up. “It looked like the man swerved and hit the agent intentionally,” said one witness. Aguilar, struck by the Hummer going an estimated 55 mph, died within minutes.

Nationwide, assaults against Border Patrol agents rose from 752 in 2006 to 987 in 2007. Authorities say clashes are likely to continue as smugglers respond to beefed-up border security with more aggressive measures.

“I think it was just a matter of time. Agents are getting assaulted every day,” said Jeremy Schappell, a Border Patrol spokesman.

Aguilar, originally from El Paso, Texas, was married with two children, Schappell said.

LAREDO, Texas — Flying objects being hurled at its agents from the riverbank are nothing new in the U.S. Border Patrol’s 84-year history.

“They haven’t just started. They’ve been going on for a while,” said Matthew Hudak, a patrol agent in charge in the Laredo sector.
Except now, he and other agents from Brownsville, Texas, to San Diego, Calif., report those sporadic incidents are on the rise and, at times, have become more violent.

Border Patrol vehicles also have been rammed by smugglers on the run. Others throw metal spikes in the road, similar to what law enforcement uses in car chases. Last year in California, an agent there was ambushed and killed by a group of men he was tracking. They were later arrested in Mexico and the U.S. The shooter is serving a 40-year sentence. After the agent was murdered, the area was saturated by federal, state and local law enforcement.

“It’s not productive to the smugglers to engage in any kind of activity that would be dangerous toward an agent,” said Hudak.

According to Laredo Police, an agent in Laredo several weeks ago shot and killed a known drug smuggler during a struggle. The case remains under investigation.
“Just like any other law enforcement agency, those are the inherent risks of coming out and doing this job,” said Hudak

Several years ago, two American border guards shot at a Mexican drug dealer, supposedly hitting him in his butt, and rogue attorney Johnny Sutton prosecuted these guards and had them imprisoned. He was a Bush appointee and both Sutton and GWB should have been removed from office.
Obama is also giving lip service to the idea of border security but it is likely nothing will come of it. It seems the goal is the removal of the border altogether thus uniting the two countries. After all, many Mexicans want back southern California and Arizona and they’ve almost achieved that by mass migration to those areas, destroying property as they come through.

I remember in 2001, right after GWB took office, his Secretary of State, Ashcroft, came to Arizona to look at the border. There were several Arizona legislators as well as businessmen and ranchers in the group. One person asked for help in securing the border. He and the other Arizonans were scorched for even daring to ask such a thing! After all, they had enjoyed the benefits of being Americans! While I’m here, I’ll sound off about something else. Mexico is not part of the USA although sometimes it’s treated as though it is. I’m sick and tired of people who come here for a hand-out. If they come here and work their tails off like the rest of us (I’m 68, have worked from the time I was 16, and I’m still working every day), then that’s a whole different matter, and one that’s fair to all, but to come here and sign up for Welfare or Social Security and actually succeed in collecting is so totally wrong I’m unable to even find the words to describe it!
I think we all need to know how people who have never contributed to Social Security are allowed to collect from it, and that includes SSI. Social Security was never meant to be a welfare program, and certainly for those Americans, including myself, who worked all their lives and contributed to SS, the idea that somebody like that should be able to collect from that fund should be absolutely horrendous and something that makes us want laws passed to prevent that from ever happening.
We have to work like crazy this year to get all of the incumbents out of Congress. It seems that once they have been elected, no matter what they’ve promised to do during their campaigns, they forget about their promises and just do whatever they want to do and whatever they’re paid by lobbyists to do. That’s just wrong, folks. They’re shooting us in the back. We elect these people to put into place the things that we need, the things that we want. Do they do it? Sometime back I happen to be standing in line at the Post Office counter at my local grocery store. While in line, the young lady ignored all the postal customers in an effort to serve about 75 illegal aliens that were sending money back to Mexico, through Western Union. Send I speak Spanish, I understood their conversation. They were laughing about how gullible the US was about allowing them to send money back to Mexico. Not all of them were sending money to family. I waited 45 minutes to get some stamps.

When I got home, I got on the computer and tracked down the President & CEO of the market and told him about what was going on. They shut down all of the Western Union points in their stores.

What you say is very true! I have seen Mexican workers strip mobile homes and conventional houses of plumbing, appliances, fixtures, carpeting, even windows and doors of the conventional house! And, yet, our farmers are forced to provide housing with a/c and all utilities for the migrant workers. I have also seen the same houses stripped of their siding, and in some cases, insulation, by the same people. All of this goes to Mexico and other points south for the migrants’ own homes! Also, by taking our jobs and sending money back to their various countries, Mexico on south has improved their standard of living.

I read that there are a lot of OTM’s (other than Mexicans)in the border crossers. The countries that these terrorists are from do not have any navy or airforce to speak of so seems like the only way they can get in besides sneaking across the border are to come on commercial ship or plane. When I would go to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Phoenix to get birth certificates for my kids, I would have to wade through over 100 Mexican illegals waiting for birth certificates for their brats! There are places, in the USA, that look like old Mexico now… disgusting, dirty and depressing. The illegals did that to the neighborhoods they take over. They say they come here for a better life, yet they bring the dirt and filth with them.

I’m glad you mentioned this fact. The illegals will target a neighborhood, move someone in, then harass the Americans with loud music, loud parties, cars charging up and down the streets, and not just a little bit of gunfire. One by one the Americans are forced out, their homes are snatched up, and the process begins over again targeting the hold-outs. Then, ignoring the city zoning codes and building codes, the illegals will build two or three more houses, albeit small ones, on the property. Some neighborhoods in Central Phoenix, and the old suburb of Maryvale will have at least two houses on each lot—most of which are only about 50′ x 100′–city sized lots, zoned for ONE house, now hold up to three, and in some cases, four, houses!
