Obama Threatens Legal Action Against BP

June 4, 2010 by

Obama threatens legal action against BPPresident Obama reiterated on Tuesday the administration’s commitment to determine the cause of last month’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, referring to the crisis as "the greatest environmental disaster of its kind in our [nation's] history." Obama also vowed to bring to justice anyone who may have committed a crime by contributing to the spill.

"If our laws were broken leading to this death and destruction, my solemn pledge is that we will bring those responsible to justice on behalf of the victims of this catastrophe and the people of the Gulf region," he said.

Meanwhile, Obama suggested that insufficient regulation may have been partially responsible for the disaster, and that stronger government oversight may be necessary in the future, according to The New York Times.

The president has directed an independent commission to explore what caused the spill, and what role the Federal government should play in helping to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy. The news conference came just three days after BP announced that its latest efforts to stop the spill had failed.

Obama, who has been outspokenly critical of the oil giant’s response to the disaster, said the news was "as enraging as it is heartbreaking."

Please take a little time on Saturday, June 5th, to express and project the following INTENTION for the Oil Spill in the Gulf: ‘My intention is for the Deepwater Horizon’s oil leak to be immediately and successfully contained, and full eco-balance restored to the surrounding sea and marine life.’

No need to castigate any of the key parties to this disaster; just focus strongly on your intention that the problem be successfully resolved.

    Bless you

Another Oil Rig that ALMOST blew up before it even went online…?

It was a BP Oil Rig, too. THUNDERHORSE

      http://www.offshore-technology.com/features/feature582/

Many contend that the inherent safety measures were left untended or were completely missing. The above Article does not discuss the depth of malfeasance for safety protocols that BP is famous for.

And, if someone is going to blame some TEXAN for this – they should NAME that person instead of ranting suspicious conspiracy talk – submit proof or shut up.

      • Claire

Anthony–I have to agree with you–She commented about a certain Texan being the culprit for the oil spill, and she should not say things like this unless she has positive proof.

  • chuck b

as far out as it may sound i suspect there could be more to this oil spill than we know. why haven’t they made more effort to skim this oil from the surface and why has the epa dragged its feet on all attempts to corner this catastrophe. there’s a rat here somewhere and even if the rig wasn’t sabotaged it looks like the enviro’s and the lib’s are using it to their advantage. they want a catastrophe.
maybe we should petition god that he remove these ignorant people from power and do something about the ignorant people that voted for barry. i would like to throw in a few repub;s in that prayer.

    • eddie47d

The “libs and enviro’s want a catastrophe” What crap!,and you claim the other side is ignorant. That’s like saying G.Bush wanted the planes to fly into the towers. We could take all the nosensical garbage you and i41 spread around and ship it to the Gulf and plug that hole.

      • chuck b

        eddie

we sure plug that hole in your face. if they didn’t want this type of catastrophe, what took them so long before making any kind of effort to fix the problem and they are still stalling. huh? i guess you could say they are not capable of handling such a crisis, i’d agree on that one!!

      • Anthony

        Eddie -

Have you researched LOOSE CHANGE ? (there’s even a 2nd Edition)
        What about “American Coup”…?

You need to wake up boy…..

    • Jim H.

Chuck b, The Dutch have a ship that siphons or skims the oil out of the water. It then separates the oil from the water and then discharges the water back into the ocean. The problem is it gets all but 5% of the oil out. The discharge water still has 5% of the oil in it and it is against the law for any ship to discharge any oil into the gulf. It took the bureaucrats 45 days to figure out that 5% of the oil is better than 100%. The ship is on it’s way over from Europe now, since they finally gave the ship an exemption. Bureaucrats, the words pragmatism nor expediency are in their vocabulary.

      • chuck b

        jim

a national geographic program two days ago showed the coast guard skimming the water and separating the oil into 25,000 gal tubes, it doesn’t take a chinese attorney to figure out some of these recovery actions, however, the epa is too busy trying to find some reason not too. the radio reported today we have lots of barges set up for this type of recovery and are on the way there. so why has it taken so long for someone to get a handle on this??

      • Jim H.

Chuck b, I don’t know how long it takes to move and set up this equipment, but 45 days does seem to long. Early on the estimates on how bad the damage is was underestimated, so maybe the call for help was delayed. I’m just speculating. We get so much information, from so many sources, it’s hard to separate fact from rumor. Then there is bureaucracy, moving at the speed of snail to issue permits. ( you need a permit for a disaster?)

      • Claire

Jim H — It is taking forever to get things going and it is driving me nuts. A horrific disaster and “they” are moving like sloths. It makes me sick to think about the fishermen, the economy, the coastline, the marine life, egads. I am so impatient. I would have had things going on day one!!
To hell with red tape, and bureaucracy. I just want to reach out and smack all their faces. How dare they screw around with a disaster such as this??!!

      • Claire

Jim H–What about the plumes? BP says there are none, but yet someone has seen them. Dang it, I can’t remember the name of the person that saw them. Scientist? egads, I don’t know but I do remember thinking that I would believe the person first, not BP. This is what I heard on TV yesterday.

  • http://gmail i41

Boogiewheel, any one that has oil, stocks are going to take a hit, teachers unions, police officers union, for that matter any union. But they all seem to beleive in hope and change, also all the envior b–l s–t on going green. Of course dems and enviors are going to pay more for vasoline, since it is petrolem jelly, so they will get to see what the change is like, the American people with dems in total control, sure did with health care bill. But being socialists and progressives, dems are always claiming America needs change. Wait till the socialists get cap and fraudulant trade hits you electric bill and we all pay 19 dollars a gallon for fuel.

  • http://gmail i41

I gather that she thinks a Texan is involved, but what Texan in particular? A blow out in shallow water would have been taken care easier and quicker, there has been over 43,000 wells drilled in water with out a problem, the law of averages catch up with you in any activity. If I had to guess, the one with oil on his fingers is Onumnutt and his academic know and do nothings, all of them including Oidoity theorize. Theoriies are like rear ends every one and everything has one. I though Omoron was a Kenyan crossbred but not a Texan! I don’t he would last through a one night rodeo, he might hurt his fairy wrists, and he sure isn’t a dogger, or a roper, but a definitely a reject clown in the muton busting event!

  • Bogiewheel

Lets get over the finger pointing for a moment…..There seems to be little thought to a group of innocent people who are being hit hard by this BP situation. There are thousands of elderly retired people in England who’s only income came from BP stock investments, which have now evaporated.

The huge drop in BP shares came about when the “Statesmanship” of the Obama White House declared that BP “may” have done something illegal and in essence ( basically and without regard for peripheral details) BP is going to pay.

The Obama White House has demonstrated a poor habit of making knee-jerk statements without consideration of consequence beyound the Rose Garden.

    • Claire

      “I never promised you a rose garden……”

      • Claire

Bogiewheel-Sorry, I am getting tired and I get goofy when I am tired.

      • JeffH

        “I beg your pardon”

      • Claire

        JeffH—I left that out!!!

      • JeffH

Claire, lol…I couldn’t resist and just had to add it in…such a good fit.

      • Claire

JeffH— But you were correct. I didn’t have all the words.

  • http://yahoo.com Sue C

LOOK HERE, LIBERTY! DON’T PLAY THE ASS! MY STATEMENT IS NOT A DUPLICATE! THIS IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT ISSUE. MY FIRST STATEMENT WAS ABOUT IMMIGRATION, AND THIS ONE IS ABOUT THE OIL DISASTER IN THE GULF OF MEXICO! STOP THE NONSENSE, OR DON’T SEND ME ANY OF YOUR DAMNED E-MAILS!

    • JeffH

Sue C, as upset as you are you should consider boycotting “LIBERTY” altogether and canceling the e-mails (unsubscribing)

      • libertytrain

JeffH – I’ve got to say that I could not make heads or tails over what she was attempting to say…or at whom?

      • JeffH

        libertytrain…so far as I can recall…that’s a “status quo’ for Sue C.

      • Claire

Whoa–I would say she is pissed. Texan–she is referring to Bush more than likely.

      • JeffH

        No doubt…it’s Bush’s fault again.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        JeffH,
don’t you know Bush went out there and beat on the valve with a sledge until it blew??? Lucky for him he was blown clear of the fire!!! I guess I really shouldn’t feed Sue like that but she sounds soignorant!!!

      • Claire

JeffH–The only other rich white Texan is T. Boone Pickens. He chairs the hedge fund for BP. Hmmmmm….

      • JeffH

Now Claire, what about JR Ewing?

      • Claire

JeffH– Funny. JR would be capable, but Bobby Ewing was too honest. I came up with two other names–but maybe I shouldn’t post them. Heavy hitters donating to politicians-big money. Sue C’s post was weird. Why go through all that? Still, I have to admit I am curious.

      • Claire

JeffH–Damn it, I want to play detective!

      • JeffH

Claire…Sue C is another wierd one around here…to even begin to try to comprehend the chatter is like a 1000 piece puzzle. Where to start.

      • Claire

JeffH–For her to imply something like that is rather odd, and she appeared to be very hostile.

      • JeffH

Claire, all her posts have been a bit off with a penchant for real anger and hate. Reminds me of a one legged woman I once new named Ilene…didn’t have a left leg and always tilted to the left, no matter what! Oh well. lol

      • Claire

JeffH–Here’s a funny– Bob likes to go to IHOP for breakfast sometimes and he will always says “I want to go to IHOP and see Ilene.” Gosh, that’s terrible.

  • http://yahoo.com Sue C

BP is not the real criminal, in this issue. A very rich Texan is responsible for the blast, the murder of those 11 men, and the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Those who are looking for/to BP, to resolve this problem, is not looking for the criminal who got the multiple murders/expanding disaster started in the first place. Get to the bottom of the real story. BP is still stunned, and completely overwhelmed by this horrible issue, while the real bastard is sitting in his comfortable sofa watching all parties go helter skelter, trying to find a solution to this gigantic problem.

Just find him, and can the bastard!!!!! OK!!!!! Stop blaming BP for all this stuff. The redneck is enjoying this disaster with glee, in TEXAS!!!!! Where are all the experts on finding criminals????? You have got to use some genius here, or you will be canned.

NOTE: Oil rigs have never been brought down before, except in inclement weather, such as in hurricanes/typhoons etc! THE CRIMINAL IS AN EXTREMELY RICH WHITE MAN, IN TEXAS!!! GO FOR IT GUYS!!!!!

    • JeffH

…Who could this criminal be??? Not BP but B??? I bet.

    • Claire

Sue C — Why post a comment like this if you are not going to give details? What is the point of posting comments like you did and then cut and run? Apparently your comments are not true. Who is this rich white Texan or are you just spinning your wheels, and trying to spread more propaganda? Personally I prefer to hear the truth, not some drummed-up hysterical rant. Take a pill if you are that bad off.

    • Claire

Sue C–If you know who it is, and you are positive, and have information, go to the police or better yet, the FBI.

  • http://InternetExplorer Elinor Schreiber

Did I hear there was 3 leaks? I wonder if these wells were sabotoged. It was very clear that democrats DID NOT want oil drilling in U.S. If we get our oil from Sadi=Arabia we are helping the terrorist. Also jobs that Obama is creating are gov. jobs. Housing on Sec 8 are now being inspected 3 times per year instead of once. The obama health-care is to be managed by IRS and it will create gov.jobs.Banning the don’t ask don’t tell is creating more problems and wil weaken our militairy. Hitler did this and what happened to him? We are having out freedom taken away and the morals of our country will destroy us. We are living in a bad situation and the gov. IS NOT protecting our people. Feel bad for people in Arizona this SHOULD NOT be happening and the gov not backing the laws or the Americans. Thanks for letting me voice my opinion.

    • eddie47d

This has nothing to do with Hitler but if it makes you feel better to say so knock youself out. Maybe a martian spaceship crashed into the well!

  • Lucy

Blame game will take its course regardless of whose fault it is. I just hope it focuses on Obama and exposes his incompetence.

So we are 6 weeks in. Seems all consensuses knew the only one way to stop the oil, was to drill into existing line in several places to extract oil pressure from existing leakage. Then cut off that bad valve. Well to me that action should have started from day one. We would be 1 to 2 weeks out from stopping the oil flow. I am just a girl with no mechanical or engineering skills but I do have common sense which none of these idiots apparently have. Tap the existing line and cap the darn leak!

    • http://victorbarney@embarqmail.com Victor L Barney

Lucy, the only problem is that Marxist seem to now control the House, Senate, Presidency and, are about the even control the Supreme court! And, America voted for it just to be politically correct, I presume?

      • Lucy

Yup Victor I know one thing for sure I have no political correctness! My passion is to keep my freedom and to secure my future and the future of my children and grandchildren. No matter what the current administration throws at the American people we all have got to stand up together and be heard! I know I have learned one thing about political correctness, if you are in the presence of a Liberal or someone who is teetering on the fence to join the conservative party, do not say negative things about the “GREAT ONE” because it will only make them feel sorry for him and he will win their vote….that’s how these bleeding heart liberals are….this country has been ruined by sensitivity…sad huh?

    • eddie47d

The oil leak in 1979 in the Gulf took 9mos. to fix so what’s your point. BP made a risky calculation by not installing the original shutoff switch on the Horizon so the ball is in their court. This means from here on out they better be doing it right. Can we trust these corporations to do the right thing? Maybe and maybe not so here comes government regulations so live with it.

  • valricoslash

I think he is pissing into the wind. He will have a very hard time proving that BP committed a crime. that would mean that they actually planned this event. What is criminal is the Obama adminstration inaction in the cleanup. The Feds don’t have the capability or the brains to figure out how to stop the leak, but they have plenty of manypower sitting on their fat government employed butts in Washington. I say start rotating them down to the gulf for cleanuup duty for periods of 2-4 weeks at a time. Send them down on military transports, and house them in tents (like our soldiers in afgahnastan, and feed the MREs. No deferrments–if you work for the Feds, then you must do cleanup. that includes all the big 6 figure incme folks including attornies, accountants, engineers, and general administrators.

  • Dale

Over 36,000 holes drill in the gulf with no problem. Why are they drilling 1 mile down? Cause the enviro-whacks don’t want them drilling in shallow water, or on land, or in Alaska. This disaster is once again the “Unintended Consequences” of poorly thought out lieberal policies. While countries like Norway are DEBT-FREE because they actually drill for gas and oil . . . the US is fast becoming Greece on Steroids.
The Komander-in-chief is a rank amateur at all things govt . . . thinking people knew that 2 years ago.
Did it ever occur to anyone that the enviro-whacks sabotaged this rig . . . I live in the NorthWest . . . have watched these loonies for decades do similar things.

    • Cathy

“Did it ever occur to anyone that the enviro-whacks sabotaged this rig . . . I live in the NorthWest . . . have watched these loonies for decades do similar things.”

YES…it occurred to me that SOMEONE caused this disaster. Maybe even our own government. (I put NOTHING past them.)

      • http://victorbarney@embarqmail.com Victor L Barney

Cathy, I was thinking the exact same thing! Unfortunately, it’s probably even more than probable and that’s tragic that we’ve come to this, isn’t it? That is how Marxists work, though!

      • eddie47d

Another one dealing in conspiracies;you fit right in.

      • JC

With all of the information out there…with all of the black ops that have been exposed…with all of the politicians caught being involved in illegalities…with all of the hard evidence of government collusion in immoral activities around the world…
You can still paint everyone who doesn’t trust the government with the “conspiracy nut” brush?
I’d have to say your completely out of touch with reality.

  • Jim H.

I’m all for the people directly responsible for the accident having to face up to it. If it was negligence on the inspectors or short cuts by the company or both. I remember with the Enron case, how SOME auditors from Arthur Anderson were involved. In there hurry to make people pay, the whole company went down, causing good people who had nothing to do with it to lose there job. BP employs alot of people, who are good, hard working employee’s. Let’s not get carried away when extracting our pound of flesh, like we did with Enron. We need to figure what the costs of this mess really is and send the proper bill to BP. We also need to find the REAL culprits and make sure they are served justice.

    • eddie47d

      Amen!

    • Claire

Jim H–Thank you. Logical and rational, that is what you are.

  • Bud T

As usual, Obama is playing the “blame game” to remove the focus on his inability to grasp anything. He and his cronies are certainly not going to let a good crisis go to waste. If he really had OUR country at heart, he would have offered whatever assistance, resources, etc. immediatley which might be available instead of searching for some non-existent criminal activity.

  • refuse2lose

This is what you get for having two lawyers running the country.Between Obama and Holder both they couldn’t run a lemonade stand but the wise Americans have gave them the keys to an entire country. And their way of fixing the oil spill, which fit in perfectly with his “green energy”agenda is to sue anyone and everyone. He better find those lawyers who have been helping him hide all of his school records,he might need them.

  • http://victorbarney@embarqmail.com Victor L Barney

P.S.: I understand that we have a couple of people in California who could have really helped fix this Gulf Oil mess immediately, but we have a Marxist machine to bring down the Republic! However, our Foreign(non-Israelite) President is too busy trying to destroy our Republic and acting fixing this mess! Can’t see the concern he would have with BP because they’re probably already led my Marxists, being a British company and all!

  • http://gmail i41

Any time you work with metal and equipment, there will be problems or failure of some type, if it is used long enough, and goes through severl repetitions. What the hell are we drilling in that deep of water for any way? Because the envior retards have stoppped drilling in 300′ deep water. There has been blow outs and failures at that dept, before, but it was contained and stopped. The reason we don’t drill on land, to easy and too simple, also alot of the oil inland is on private owned property. Now we have spent over 13 trillion into debt today, how is the hope and change going. When you have lawyers in charge and waiting around like a bunch of buzzards for a carcuss , nothing positive gets done, but push papers and dream!

  • http://victorbarney@embarqmail.com Victor L Barney

I wonder if the election is even held, if the Republicans will do what is right? What? Impeach the president and his Czars for Treason! He most definitely beats the Rosenburgs(sp) for sure!

  • s c

People, get this straight. THE meanest, foulest, back-stabbing son-of-a-b@#^* on our block [UNCLE SCAM] knows how to point fingers, but he NEVER takes the heat or the blame for ANYTHING. Even at this moment, the new King of Corporatism, Herr Obummer, wants to suck to BP and FINE them at the same time. WHAT A RACKET! The least the Justice Department could do (if they had any integrity) would be to indict and arrest Herr Obummer and his treasonous pals via RICO statutes.
Hypocrisy reigns supreme in Washington. Herr Obummer is doing so many things wrong at the same time that it would take 50 AGs to do the job. Forget Holder. He sold himself long before Herr Obummer made Holder our Devil’s Advocate.
Herr Obummer gives a damn about justice the same way Stalin and Mao cared about human rights, peace and ‘social justice.’ Rip off the mask, America.

    • WarriorH

Maybe the real prize is taking over BP. A government run oil company. Now, wouldn’t that put us in good company with the likes of the socialist countries south of our border.

  • Nadia

Is there something more to this threat of a lawsuit than meets the eye?
Why doesn’t he focus on the problem which is the oil spillage in the gulf and try to get the brightest and best scientists to collaborate on a strategy. Why didn’t he respond to the La Governor and immediately start to build the booms to stop the oil from reaching shore and deal with how to circumvent an economic disaster. Instead he summons holder and some of his flunkies to find a reason to sue BP.
Instead of dealing with this crisis, he is instead partying with Paul McCartney, golfing, attending press banquets, going on vacation, which by the way when he wanted to push obamacare he cancelled his vacation to Indonesia, and placing moratoriums on oil drilling, which will further destroy the economy. What is wrong with this man’s priorities? Does he understand what it means to lead?

This white house occupant is inept at best and for the good of the country should resign and take his czars with him.
    Nadia

    • Dan Burke

Let me see. I am not into conspiracy theory. However, I do believe that there are personal and political interests to consider.

As much as the environmentalists decry this oil catastrophe, do they good photographic evidence that the oil spill is bad for the environment if it had been stopped early and effectively? No, they would have had to search harder where right now they could probably take an easy stroll and show how it is reaching fragile habitats. So as much as they decry the spill, the damages it has done and will continue to do will make this something far harder for Americans to ignore than if it had been kept under control…. So while it is bad for the animals, plants, and our businesses, this is great for the activists. This is another reason why they shouldn’t deploy any method that might actually work. If we deploy something that works, then we will believe that we can drill and clean up the possible messes. On the other hand, if we fail to deploy anything that might work then we can show how we shouldn’t use oil at all. Note: I think I saw Kevin Costner promoting something that had some potential but after that presentation video I haven’t heard any news about it since. Plus, there was the delay to use firebooms early on, which might have drastically reduced the damages…. and the list goes on. I mean, some of this other technology I have read about and seen may not have worked any better, but the whole mess seems to reek of either incompentence or willful negligence.

And if by chance our administration is full of marxist, communists and others that believe it would be better for government to run the economy, plus we have an unpopular energy bill in progress, so government has an interest in oil being seen as the culprit of a disaster. So while the accident is probably in part the fault of all sorts of government and BP negligence and collusion beforehand to bypass proper safety protocols, the continued disaster is politically advantageous for congress and the President. So, again, plants, animals, and businesses will suffer for political gains. Now we can justify further going down the path to fascism or communism or another ism that puts business under the thumb of government. This time, instead of the environmentalists gaining public opinion from this catastrophe, now it is the progressive party with their ideas that government knows best how to run a business.

And the list could probably go on about all those who verbally claim to care, and many do believe their own words, but it is in reality to their advantage to have this disaster. As far myself, I am a capitalist. If we really let capitalism solve this problem, would there have been an investor who would have funded a mass production of Kevin Costner’s device to separate oil from water if they believed that they could actually turn around and sell the oil for a profit? But this a catastrophe with government just waiting to criminalize anyone they can so why would anyone step in a fix the problem and make a profit too? If they were to step in, fix it, and make it a profit then they would also have the smarts to project the future beforehand and know that the media would criminalize them, the government would back that view and strip away all their profits and probably fine them on top of that too.

    • WarriorH

Because that’s what lawyers are trained for – Lawsuits!

  • Norm

BP avoided and eluded all resonable safety procedures. There is no excuse for their actions. In my mind this event is not unlike a terrorist attack.
The young Baffoon CEO is the most arrogant, uncaring, overpaid phoney I’ve heard in a long time. When asked if BP was going to pay the 10 billion in dividends he said that the stockholders deserve their due. He was also upset that his life was not going smoothly these days.
The man and his company managment are criminals and should be dealt with in the courts.

    • s c

Normy, since you’re concerned with criminals being tried in court, when will Herr Obummer be taken to court? Your false god, Herr Obummer, will get his turn in ‘the monkey barrel,’ too.
Thanks for expanding my vocabulary. I couldn’t find “baffoon” in my non-progressive dictionary. If you meant ‘buffoon,’ that’s another matter. One of the prime definitions of a buffoon is someone who thinks of Herr Obummer as an infallible god or a fifth-rate, standup comedian (like Al ‘ha ha’ Franken).
And remember to take public education to court. You keep proving that it’s another classic, progressive failure.

      • Norm

        s c
Can I take that as a job well done for BP from you?
I’m not at at all surprised you know how to spell bufoon. I bet you can spell A–Hole as well since you “is” one.

      • Norm

Oops sorry I meant buffoon, actually I meant SC.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        normie,
the only one on here that acts like the north end of a south-bound donkey is you!!!

  • Brian

The response needs to be the realization that pushing oil exploration to more hostile places is not the way to energy independence.
Fossil fuels (oil and coal) are the proven energy sources in this country.
Stop using taxpayer money pandering to wealthy elitists with their boutique energy gimmicks.
Press the environmentalists to spend their money in bringing to market what they think are the better energy sources.

  • Marilyn

Obama said he was taking full responsibility. Well, he has done that and with the ban on all deep water drilling all around the US. Not only was BP neglegent. The United States agency that should be overseeing such drilling practices is not doing their job.

The most important issue is not blaming each other but devoting that energy to work together and get the oil mess under control.

Talk is cheap. Action is the answer.

    • Claire

Marilyn–I agree with what you posted. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words.

  • http://PersonalLibertyDigest cornfuscious

Didn’t the administration say that they were in charge of what BP was doing, and took full responsibility????

    • Claire

Yes, the administration said they were in charge. However, it takes two to tango and neither have any solutions.

      • Vicki

being “in charge” is not a dance.

      • Claire

Vicki–I am fully aware that “being in charge” is not a dance. You know exactly what I meant-it takes both (the two of them, the administration and BP) to work things out and come up with a solution.

      • Vicki

You can not have 2 leaders and you can not have 2 masters. Either BP must take the lead or the Obama Admin must. Obama claims to have taken the lead and BP has publicly stated that they do what Obama’s admin authorizes (allows).

Now I don’t know much about Oil wells and spills and controls but I do know that BP has MUCH more to lose then Obama’s administration does. BP has MUCH more experience in Oil exploration than Obama’s administration does.

BP is the one who should be running the operation. BP has the strongest incentive to stop the leak. BP is the one who will have to pay the financial costs. BP is the one who is loosing millions of dollars in product every day. Obama could be useful by having his admin assist BP instead of controlling them. Obama could be useful by asking for independent investigation of what caused the accident instead of foolishly claiming they will “get” those responsible.

        Besides, sometimes accidents do happen.

      • Claire

Personally, I do not think it is a matter of having 2 leaders or 2 masters in some cases. What is wrong with working together to solve any problem? However, in view of the fact Obama has said he is now in charge, then he should have made the arrangements to have equipment and the necessary strategies to stop the leak as soon as possible. This is debatable since I don’t think politicians are oil men. In my opinion he waited too long to provide any input to the situation.
The big tankers that suck up the oil should have been brought in immediately and they weren’t.
Yes, BP has a lot to lose, and I realize they have “experience” but this experience should also include the proper equipment and wherewithal to stop this leak. They apparently did not have the proper equipment or this would have been taken care of by now. Preparation is the key since accidents do happen and they will happen. I am a believer in an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If we do offshore drilling, then be prepared. We have the technology but we should have the proper equipment/maintenance in the event of an accident.
I believe Obama sent Holder down there. It will be interesting to see what happens with this aspect. Is it for investigation or possible lawsuit. I have not heard any news concerning Holder’s trip to the gulf. I haven’t watched the news today.
The devastation from this oil spill will last for years. I am truly concerned about the economy of these gulf states, the fishermen, the destruction of the wetlands, the ocean and the marine life. We will all be paying for this in one way or another.
To me, they are both at fault. BP should have been prepared and Obama should have stepped up to the plate to offer aid the minute this oil spill happened.

    • Don

Yep. The administration was all over the news saying they were in charge and BP was taking direction from them. The administration said nothing was happening that they didn’t approve or direct. So I’m confused. Why is the White House considering legal action against BP who is supposedly just following the the President’s and “All the President’s Mens’” direction.

  • Shaker

    Transparency, Eh!………from a Black Arseh……….? good Luck !

    • Claire

Shaker–Americans do not receive transparency from any administration.

    • Dave

Claire, you’re right again, there is never real transparency. The corporations are too powerful. Why, in this context, would you havet o go using a name like Black Arseh?

      • Claire

Dave–I did not use the black terminology, Shaker did. Another round of racism. Racism is still alive in America. No way around it. I find it disgusting.

  • JeffH

BP deserves what they get, but the O-man better look in his own backyard and put his boot on the neck of the agencies responsible for all of the safety inspections. As usual, this administration through lack of leareship, dropped the ball from the very beginning. I’d also like to kmow “WHY” there was a blowup and “what” was the cause. Everything being reported has been sheer speculation.

    • Claire

JeffH– Whenever something catastrophic happens, there is always a commission appointed to come up with the “cause.” Just like the JFK incident and others, we will be lucky if we are told the real truth. All administrations have told us what they want us to hear. They are not going to blame themselves. After all, they have to think about votes. And I say this sarcastically.
However, offshore drilling is nothing to “fool around” with. It should only be conducted with the proper equipment, maintenance, safety, and the technology to be able to prevent/control a disaster like we are facing now. This is what I firmly believe. Nothing should be conducted on a half-cocked mentality.
There needs to be regulation NOT deregulation. Plus the safety inspectors apparently weren’t doing their job either. The same old “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” game.
Our government was slow to react to Katrina and slow to react to this oil spill. Bush did not “cause” Katrina and neither did Obama “cause” this oil spill. As I said in another post, our government needs to shape up and do the job they were elected to do. No more fooling around. No more game-playing politics. All of them have “dropped the ball” and expected someone else to handle the situation.
Now we are facing one of the worst tragedies with no end in sight. I pray to God that something can be done to stop this horrible oil leak. It is close to Florida now and the devastation to the economy in these states is horrendous. Not to mention what is happening to the ocean and marine life. It is shameful.
I have a message to all politicians that have and are still accepting money from oil companies— You reap what you sow.

      • GREG

BRAVO!!! You hit the nail directly on the head!

        Clair,

We the american people pays for it.

      • http://www.SaveLakeAtitlan.org Duende

We The People always pay… American or not.. but it’s no accident, or incompetent politicians. The politicians are doing exactly what their masters with the money dictate… subtly or not so subtly. Even that wild and whacky Sarah Palen who may not actually even have a clue to the powers that truly run this country. The others talk about change but they’re not ready to step in front of the bullet. They just whip up foment against powerless scapegoats and make sure they never come close to stepping on the toes of the really big boys.

      • Claire

Duende–To me, politicians are incompetent when they do what the masters of money dictate. None of them want to step in front of the bullet, they wouldn’t get elected nor re-elected. The masters of money would not and will not allow it if the politicians did not do their “bidding.” The political system is a sham.

      • JeffH

        Duende, I couldn’t agree more…very true I’m sure.

      • SiliconDoc

All this talk about the money masters, but one fact surely is BP is connected to “the secret unnamed money masters” just as much as congress is.
I watched the congressional hours on the FED bailout and Geithner and all the rest – Bernanke and “if we tell you who got the trillions it will create a bank run panic, ‘George’ .”
I’ve read and watched and devoured everything I can for years on Bilderberger, the NWO, the UN, and all the rest.
It’s clear, stark ravingly absolutely clear that the banks and Wall Street and the countless trillions jostling about those entities are “the money masters” and it is also clear each and every congressperson HAS A PERSONAL ASSET they are concerned iwth every single time they cast any votes in the matter, let alone “bribery from K Street”.
We HAVE the list of billionaires in the world, we have the Corporations numbers and values – very little is absolutely hidden… worldwide money numbers are known, the big players are known, it’s NOT A SECRET ANYMORE – the internet has EXPLODED the lack of widespread knowledge.
When the Congress votes on matters pertaining to the stock markets/ Wall Street, they have plenty of personal interests, friends and family, government pension funds, worldwide power and influence, massive budget borrowing, and all the other general concerns that come with the territory – they don’t NEED any “big players” stuffing their pockets for them to SCREW IT ALL UP in their own fear and greed and power nightmare…
See, that’s the very, very sad part…
Even if by some miracle the dark evil secret gigantic money powers are explosed and crushed, we still have the fat piglet congrersscritters and their endless personal interests far removed from bribes and those shenanigans to overcome – or rather THEY DO.
What does a demolibidiot congrocritter piece of crap do when confronted with a vote on making loans to the “poor” for three hundred thousand dollar plus homes ? (Nancy recently wanted it upped to 450k or so) We know what they do. Politics and their demo lib slaved post modern progressive propaganda prize dictates the answer before a DIME exchanges hands.
The problem isn’t just secretive and diabolical world control money monsters pushing around the corrupt critters on the floor of the houses.

      • Hugh Jordin

        Duende-

You are so right. The real powers that run this country and much of the world are those whose names you never hear, live in fabulous but secluded places, and reap fortunes from the suffering of others.

Politicians are like actors in a movie. When the actor says something brilliant the audience reacts thing how smart the actor is when actually the actor can be a complete dullard and the words were written by someone the audience never sees or thinks about. How the actor delivers the words are determined by the director… another person the audience never sees. The public is like the audience at a movie… we see the actors but not the driving forces behind them.

When one gets to know a lot of actors one realizes that there are some that are brilliant, dedicated artists with high integrity, there are others that DNA has blessed with a “look” that works but otherwise have little to offer intellectually or morally. All serve the script.

Politicians are no different, they just perform in a different type of theatre on a different stage. There are some brilliant men and women of great integrity and some absolute bozos who have been “handled” in such a way as to win an election because they have a marketable “look”.

Consider how many singers are very beautiful (seen many ugly ones lately despite their talent?). Many, without pitch correction, great sound enhancement, and hot choreography would have any careers at all.

So beware of becoming followers of any politician, right or left, because you are following an illusion.

We conservatives are especially in danger as the conservative message is being usurped by shallow intellects who make good media images, such as our recent vice presidential candidate, who is no more qualified to lead our great nation than she is to be dog catcher.

We must see through the garbage being spilled on us by the back room handlers and seek REAL leadership that can move our country in the right direction and preserve what is great about it while adapting to the real challenges that face us and not be distracted by the artificial ones blown way out of proportion by the real powers so they can be free to pursue their own hidden agendas.

      • Gary

        Clair,

You are right about needing regulation. I don’t know of anyone asking for deregulation. You are absolutely right that someone wasn’t doing their job. That would be the MMS, a division of the US GOVERNMENT.
Offshore drilling is safer now than it has ever been. Countless wells have been successfully and safely drilled in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico many of which were in deeper water than this one. The MMS is responsible for inspections on ALL rigs working in the Gulf to insure that every one of them is doing what it is supposed to do. This is a failure of another government agency to do what it is supposed to do. What makes absolutely no sense is to stop all drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
That is exactly what our President has done. It doesn’t take a genius to see what that is going to do to the economy of not only Louisiana and other Gulf states not to mention other parts of the country that depend on the oil and gas produced in the Gulf. There are many thousands of people who make their living in the Gulf. The moratoriums placed on drilling will cost these people their jobs. That is just what we need with the economy in the condition it is.
To shut down all deepwater drilling is an

      • Claire

Gary—offshore drilling is fine, BUT HAVE the technology to prevent a mess like we have now. This mess has already created ecomomic havoc for these gulf states.

      • Gary

        Clair,

The technology is in place. That is why we don’t have this kind of thing happening more often. The problem is the human factor. Clearly the people involved in this tragedy including MMS, were neglegent in some way. The technology is already there.
The spill has shut down the seafood industry as well as charter fishing in some areas. Why add insult to injury by arbitrarily shutting down all drilling particularly when the people making that decision are not competent in that field.

      • Claire

Gary–Okay, then the “human factor” needs to shape up or get out. If they cannot do their job like they should, they have no business doing this type of work. I believe in workhorse ethics, not showhorse ethics. They are many aspects in a number of jobs that requires concentration and good sound work ethics. I do not believe in half-ass workmanship.

      • Claire

Gary—Sorry, but if the technology was in place, why haven’t they stopped the leak— because they do not have the proper equipment to stop the leak.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Claire,
According to what I have seen on all the news reports, including BBC, the operators had been using salt water instead of drilling sludge to drill and that caused friction.Of course the sludge is more expensive.

      • Claire

JoeH–This disastrous oil spill and they are still cutting corners? According to what you say they should have used sludge.

      • JeffH

…three words, “Cap and Tax”…Obama has already started the push…once again, never let a crisis go to waste…utterly despicable!

      • Claire

JeffH–Politicians always use a crisis to further their gain. It never ceases to amaze me of the unmitigated gall to use misfortune or misery to seek their goals.

      • NorthSlope

Technology has improved over the years and offshore drilling is safer and more reliable. But why to oil companies have to go farther offshore and in deeper water? Because the government and environmental groups whom they cater to has forced them to. We have plently of onshore areas that could be developed. I work on Alaska’s north slope. There is enough potential in Alaska alone to significantly contribute to America’s oil requirements.

      • Dave

I agree with you Claire. I think this is an issue that people on the right and left can agree on. I will say my only caution to Jeff is blaming the Obama administration for the lapse in regulation would be sketchy. All of the licensing for this occurred during the previous administration or just a couple of months into the new one. I think we all know who the biggest supporter of the oil industry and Haliburton was, and still is.

      • Claire

Dave–Yes, and Halliburton has donated huge sums of money to Republicans since this oil spill happened and you know what that means. However, the Democrats receive their share too. It is another ploy.

      • JeffH

Dave, licensing smicensing…monthly safety inspections were not held on Obama’s watch and it was the OBAMA ADMIN THAT GAVE THE RIG A ‘SAFETY AWARD’ LAST YEAR, not any other administration…with that I say to you, check your facts first.

From: Sun May 16, Justin Pritchard, Associated Press
AP investigations have shown that the doomed rig was allowed to operate without safety documentation required by MMS regulations for the exact disaster scenario that occurred; that the cutoff valve which failed has repeatedly broken down at other wells in the years since regulators weakened testing requirements; and that regulation is so lax that some key safety aspects on rigs are decided almost entirely by the companies doing the work.

The job falls to the 55 inspectors in the Gulf who are supposed to visit the 90 drilling rigs once per month and the approximately 3,500 oil production platforms once per year.

The Deepwater Horizon’s inspection frequency numbers struck Kenneth Arnold, a veteran offshore drilling consultant and engineer.
“I’d certainly question it,” he said. “I’d ask, ‘Why aren’t you doing it?’”
        http://randysright.wordpress.com/2010/05/17/obama-admin-gave-rig-safety-award-last-year/

      • JeffH

Please note, I’m not absolving BP in any way…the blame lies with both BP and the “government’s” irresponsibility in #1-lack of pro-reaction to the disaster and #2-irresponsible inspections and #3-BP all of the above

      • JeffH

Claire, I keep hearing about the Haliburton donations to the GOP but can’t find any information. I know that Soros has a vested interest in Haliburton stocks.

“The latest move by globe trotting, hyper-liberal billionaire George Soros borders on being too much…. Soros, of course, is the dean of Democratic money giving. And Halliburton, of course, is the company that embodies everything the Democrats see as evil. Dick Cheney is its former chief, for goodness’ sake.”
George Soros bought 1.9 million shares of Halliburton stock to the tune of $62.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2006, the same Soros that gave more than $20 million to “527″ organizations in the 2004 election, many of which used anti-Halliburton bashing as a rallying cry for the anti-war Left.

      • eddie47d

You would have found information but it was too easy to go after Soros. Now that’s okay but you get way to one sided. In 2002 Haliburton gave $ 240,000 to the Republican Party. In 2006 13 million to various campaigns. In 2010 they gave to 13 Republicans and 1 democrat. Now that doesn’t bother me as much as the other information . In 1998 Haliburton had 9 tax havens in the Grand Caimans by 1999 they had 44.One was even used to get around sanctions on Iran in 2000. Real patriotic bunch. Haliburtons taxes in 1998 were $302 million by 1999 they got a $85 million rebate. Those tax havens sure came in handy. In 2003 they paid 2.4 mil in bribes to Nigerian officials to get an even bigger tax break in the USA. When Dick Cheney became Vice-President he said he severed all ties with Haliburton (except stock options),yet he lied and kept getting $150,000 per year. In Dec. 2003 Haliburton over charged us Americans $61 mil. in gas prices. In 2004 they again paid 180 mil in bribes to Nigerian officials to get a gas plant contract. Nigeria is still #1 in internet and mail fraud. So why does Haliburton keep allowing themselves to be bribed by this nation? They evade taxes again in 2004 and paid only $15mil out of a $12.5 billion profit. Then they go and bribe more Nigerian officials for another $1.4 mil. What a racket! It’s no wonder their is so much violence and unrest in Nigeria. Their citizens must really take it in the shorts. Also in 2004 Haliburton over charged us tax payers $27 mil. There’s more on other sights but you get the picture.

      • JeffH

fast eddie…there you go again, not reading and comprehending in your haste to disprove my comment.

Now the point of Claire’s comment was what she said, and I’ll quote:
“…Halliburton has donated huge sums of money to Republicans since this oil spill happened…”
I stated that I couldn’t find, through my searches, any info about “donations” since the oil rig blowup, and I also, in my best rightwing way pointed out the Soros connection to Haliburton.

So I say to you, chew on your foot a little longer…it must taste good to you as often as you stick it in your mouth!

      • Claire

JeffH–The oil companies have donated to the liberals and the Republicans. This is exactly why these parties tend to give the oil companies a “free pass.” Do you agree?

      • JeffH

Claire, you’ve pretty much said what most of us think…Yes, we’ll never know the “real” truth and never will.

      • eddie47d

Sorry Jeff, Those 2010 donations were in May right after the Horizon incident. I know ignorance is bliss but I didn’t want to rub it in in my last post. I should know by now that you always try to bite a person back with snide remarks.

      • JeffH

fast eddie…what donations after May? Show me the links if you can find them because I haven’t and I’ve tried. All you showed was what most already knew, Haliburton donations from past years prior to 2010. But again, you’ve provided no sources other than your word. Now try as you may, you’ve still said nothing new and proved even less. So puff up your chest and walk tall knowing that you put no one in their place. It’s all there to be seen…keep your snippets coming, and don’t take everything so personal.

      • American Liberal

Claire… Agreed…these drilling rigs need very strict regulations .. We can’t just leave it to big oil or Wallstreet to be honest, as we’ve painfully seen…and yes… I also agree that right this minute BP is figuring out a way to make us pay it…it may just be s penny here and a penny there but they’ll get the cash outta us..never fails

    • Brian

Asking “WHY” there was a blowup and “what” was the cause is like NASA asking the same about a Mars probe which failed.
It is so far away in such a hostile place we cannot know.
The same goes for this method of oil exploration.
If we were smart and drilled for oil on dry land we would know what happened by now.
This well is a mile down in near freezing sea water.
We have a president who looked for answers from a movie director.
That pretty much sums up this guy’s abilities.

    • http://gtanner_1@yahoo.com Gary Tanner

Jeff H. Has it right. This Big O is a walking incompetent disaster himself. His lack of leadership is glaring.

      ps.

To Obama. The oil spill was caused by an unfortunate explosion and fire.

That happens sometimes in oil rigs. Had this been allowed to be in anwar ON LAND the spill would have been contained and corrected already without the environmental calamity we are witnessing now. All this Administration can do is point fingers and put together meaningless commissions.

A good reason might be sabatage. All the electical swithes on a shut off valve not working at the same time? Come on now, just how stupid do they realy think people are?

    • WarriorH

Of course, the answer is always that we need more regulations. We must give more authority to the bureaucreatures and their patonage armies. Doesn’t matter if they do not perform their jobs now. It’s just so much more interesting viewing porn.
