Why can’t the supreme court have justices who represent real people? Hispanics have never had representation on the court before, and as far as we know gays haven’t either…unless Roberts,Scalia,Thomas or Alito are closeted gays.
The court for 200 years was made up of only white men…what’s wrong w/ a court that reflects the diversity of the country? Nothing… Not to mention, no conservatives seem troubled by the rightwing Thomas on there as a token black.

I don’t care about the person’s race, just whether they will do their job and uphold the constitution. “Osama’s healthcare is unconstitutional, so why didn’t they do their job and claim it to be unconstitutional? Our judiciary is so corrupted by relying on the will of political parties and not the law or constitution.

denniso–Re-read my post. I said that the gays and Hispanics do not bother me. I have no problem with diversity in the Supreme Court. However, I do have a problem since all of them have been placed/chosen by both parties with only one thing in mind–for the Supreme Court to rule in their behalf on certain situations. I prefer a totally non-biased Supreme Court that will judge with fairness and with the thought of well-being for the American people and America.

Claire, of course we want justices to interpret the cases and constitution fairly and independently…what we’ve had for 99% of the life of the Court is a block of white rich males making decisions for a country made up of much more than white males. Some better than others and some w/ the ability to include the diversity of the country and experiences of different people and groups…it’s progress
that we’re finally getting more varied people w/ more perspectives on life.

denniso–sorry, I don’t want judges that lean to the left or lean to the right. They should hold themselves above any party affiliation.

Claire…there’s almost no such thing as a person exactly in the middle between left and right, Dem and Repub. And, once one side appoints people to their liking then the war is on to match w/ appointees from the other side. We all have political and philosophical views and beliefs…that’s what comes w/ being human, and we all have our views on how the gov’t should operate. Also, the constitution is not carved in stone w/ everything to be done spelled out perfectly. Part of the reason it is open to some interpretation is also because the writers couldn’t possibly imagine every eventuality for the future.
So, like it or not, we have a battle going on for the control of Gov’t. When Bush appointed Roberts and Alito he didn’t pick middle of the road men…they both are very rightwing and have their own definite views on the law. We now have to counter them to get some balance on the court. If one looks at most of the rulings for the past 10 yrs,it’s quite clear that we have a rightwing court. The recent ruling that says that corporations are entitled to the same right of free speech is an example…how can a corporation be treated as a person?

denniso–Okay, I don’t agree with the recent ruling on corporations either. It is a bunch of crap. The rest of my beliefs about the Supreme Court stay the same.

view the world differently. Most Republicans,especially the politicians, support corporations being given the same rights as we real people. Most Dems are opposed to it. Why the difference? Because the Repub party is mostly the party of business and hence corporations, so they support almost any policy or Court position that favors business. Dems have less support from business in general and have more varied and diverse support and think there is more to life and the country then money and business.

The same thing applies to Court appointees or judges in general. They
each have their own philosophical and political views that shape these sort of issues. It doesn’t mean they lean left or right,only that their views fall within certain borders. That’s also why we have 2 different parties.

This country is over 400 years old by any one that has the ability to read, calculate and reason. This Country as the United States of America born in 1775 and adopted, ratified 16 years later, in 1789, wasn’t written by a group of old white guys. The people that established this country recognized, understood history and staked their fate and fortunes on a grand experiment, namely a gift to generations that would follow. Liberty, freedom of choice, responsibility to one another and protection of the Republic and the Constitution to ensure that there was to be justice backed up by the Bill of Rights. For those that do not remember or never learned, The Constitution is a set of prohibitions, not against other”citizens” but against government and its excesses. The Constitution is written on 4 pages, in 6th grade English, and found in all public libraries as documents or in a book. There was no free public education, as nothing is free, someone paid the price. This experiment did not cite the number of Catholics that could be on the Supreme Court or limit them by exclusion. Not all members of the Court can identify with a racial group but can recognize the various constituencies available from which to choose. “Why are there no Indians from any of the tribes we signed treaties with on the court?” There are no Russian Americans that were born in this country on the court! The court for over 175 years did not seek opinions from Europeans as to the meanings provided in the Constitution. Common Sense the pamphlet was understandable to every citizen as well as those of foreign extraction visiting here. Common sense by the average citizen could be explained to another that could not read a pamphlet or The Declaration of Independence. This Christian nation has offered to the whole of mankind our lives, fortunes, educational achievments, and our children sometimes dresses as soldiers or volunteers. The success of a nation is measured not by those fleeing the country, but by those trying to legally gain access. Respect for law and duty to our forefathers to perpetuate this country and our Constitution. We do not shout “God save the King” nor ask the Politbureau for permission to visit a religious shrine. We frown on those that would destroy a Cross in the middle of the night, even after the Supreme Court decided its fate. Cowards strike those seen as targets regardless of the issues involved. The founding fathers gave us a country of law and tradition and the duty to sustain it for future generations. If you can read, Thank a teacher! If you have oppurtunity and need to read. Thank a soldier!

The conservative justices have courtroom experience, so they did bring real life experience to the court. Some of the more prominent ‘founders’ did have slaves and never set them free…Jefferson, for example.

If you read your history about Jefferson, you’ll read that he had to get rid of his slaves due to a massive debt he brought upon himself. He only kept one slave, some female that doesn’t mention her name. Not all of our founding fathers were old either. You’re just PO’ed because people want to get back to the ways of our christian founding fathers and not the ways of the spineless fool libs in office.

I think Jefferson died w/ more than one slave left…I do know that he didn’t free his mistress Sally Hennings upon his death…he was a bright man but also flawed like the rest of them and all men.
