Poll: Majority Of Americans Support Arizona's New Immigration Law

May 7, 2010 by

Poll: Majority of Americans support Arizona's new immigration law The majority of Americans support Arizona’s highly controversial immigration reform bill and are pleased with its implementation, according to a national poll recently conducted by Rasmussen Reports.

For the survey, officials with the nonpartisan organization contacted 500 voters who are living outside of Arizona and found that 59 percent of respondents "favor legislation that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant," according to the Phoenix Business Journal. In contrast, only 32 percent of those surveyed said they oppose the new law.

In the state of Arizona a total of 64 percent of registered voters support the legislation, compared to just 30 percent who have an unfavorable view of the law.

Meanwhile, an overwhelming majority of Arizona residents said they will take into account a candidate’s viewpoint on immigration reform when casting their vote in November. A total of 95 percent of voters reported following the news stories closely and 87 percent said the new legislation will be crucial in determining who to vote for in the upcoming elections.

I agree with Barb. I applaud the Governor of Arizona who took a stand against illegals. I Pray the rest of the Nation follow in her footsteps. I am not opposed to those coming from other countries who want to live in the United States. But when you come here, then you go through the steps to become United States Citizens. If you do not want to become a United States Citizen then leave. Migrants have been coming to the United States ever since we became the United States a FREE COUNTRY!!! Everyone of us who live here have had ancestors who came to the United States from other parts of the world. But for the majority of us our Great Grandparents, Grandparents, Mothers and Fathers did it right. They became United States Citizens so that their children and generations after them could live in the most Fantastic country in the world. THE LAND OF THE FREE!!!! Our forefathers who came before us built this country so that we could have what we have today! For those of you who do not remember or are recently new to this country then I suggest you go back and research the history of the Great country we live in and it is called “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” “THE LAND OF THE FREE” THE GREATEST NATION ON THIS PLANET!!!

Thank You and GOD BLESS US ALL

Firstly, the Spanish speaking people were in what is now the state of Arizona long before the sons of European emmigrants. Secondly, Mexicans are as much Americans as are those of us who live here in the United States. Remember that America is the continent in which we find the US along with Canada, Mexico and all the other countries south of our country. What do we expect of a country whhich holds a sporting event claiming to be the World Series in which no other country on the planet is allowed to compete. So much for our knowledge of geography.

    • Airangel

“Legal” Mexicans are as much American….we are living in the here and now, not hundreds of years ago so your point is irrevelant. When Arizona and California became States of the USA they fell under American Customs and Immigration so anyone entering after that fact are Illegal – period. Reagan already granted Amnesty to the existing illegals but it’s never good enough..they keep entering, cutting in line of their fellow countrymen who respect and honor our ways. This new genre don’t care about honor or integrity or respect or even basic human decency (not all of course, I am generalizing)…I find it amazing they demand everything here yet have no civilian rights to do so, they shoot at our officers, burn our flags, disrespect our education system, demonstrate with malice, learn no lessons but keep the violence going with gangs, theft and drug rings….Why don’t they use that same anger and energy to make Mexico better and demand their government give them better housing and better wages…they don’t because they know they’d be shot, shut-up or thrown in jail…we have been far too lenient with this matter and our thanks is they continue to stir up trouble and take advantage of current working and tax paying Americans.

Airangel, Strong points and good post.

      • marvin

Airangellet me make a point that you said is right but as long as we have a stuped ex arizona gov that don,t know that undocumented and illegal is the same, an a.t gen. holder on tv telling the world what not to use in a bomb that show hie stuppedt, the aclu wanting to go to court and try overturn the arizoina law, the isu ,la raza and more putting illegals on busses and sending them to dc,when some of our own reps and senators are trying to pass comprehisive immigration just a big word that gives amnesty same shit same smell just diff year i say call your 2 senators and say no more laws just enforce the laws on immigration we have tell them a vote for comprehisive immigration is a no vote from you in nov and if push comes to shove and the feds have not and will not close the border and arrest and deport all illegals the day is close at hand and we the legal americans will with the help of the states

      iain,
Lest you forget, those Mexicans took that property fron the local indians of the time!!!! Spain invaded what is now Mexico and took it from the Incas and butchered the natives even worse than the united states.

    brooke ferguson

do you understand the word aparthied ? jim crow law? give me a break!

how do you correlate that with illegal immigration, unless you are referring to the blacks that invaded so. africa like the mexicans are doing us. do you compare our immigration laws with some kind of dictatorial edict. and furthermore these illegals go on welfare they don’t leave, comprende.

    • LiberalTex

How is your question even applicable? Your references were civil rights violations against legal citizens of their own country based on race. Enforcing laws that protect our borders from FOREIGN intrusion is in no way the same thing.

  • Dave

I am all for Legal Immigration. It is the backbone of our country. Illegal immigration is another matter. Most Legal immigrants come here , learn English if they do not already speak English. They do not need to press #2 . To come into a nation Illegally is a crime. That makes then criminals. We do not need more criminals in this country. It is the duty of every law enforcement officer in every agency in every city county and state to arrest and detain for deportation all illegal immigrants. Also people that give jobs and aid to illegal immigrants should have there property taken from them and serve long jail time for treason!

    • TIME

      Dave,
I agree with you 100%, if its done in a leagl mannor its totaly ok in my book as well I welcome them with open arms no matter where they are from.

Saddly our creep politicians think they can buy votes from the Illegal’s.

IMMIGRATION ??? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
    NATIONAL SECURITY OF USA? CLOSER!!!
WHO ELSE IS WALKING ACROSS THIS BORDER WITH THE MEXICANS?
WHY WOULDN’T TERRORISTS COME IN THIS WAY?
THE QUESTION IS NOT IF BUT HOW MANY ARE IN ALREADY AND HOW MANY WALKED IN TODAY?
WHAT IS HARD TO FIGURE OUT AMERICA?
    HAS REALITY LEFT ?

The law should deter persons hiring illegal immigrants; if they can’t earn a wage then they will leave. The law that Arizona has approved is too reminiscent of South African apartheid and Jim Crow segregation pass laws.

    • eddyjames

Brooke, you are a idiot. when you are being invaded by illegals from Mexico. You need to target Mexicans , when threatened by middle eastern terrorists, you target people from the middle east, that’s not racist. That’s smart. Apartheid has nothing to do with it and Jim Crow would be right this time if it got rid of the illegals.

  • chuck b

only the demo’nistas will support amnesty and the only reason is the vote they will receive. the following is an article written by robert gribble years ago when most people were not paying much attention. i think he gives the mexican government to much credit to think they could occupy the u.s. and overthrow the government, but, they can change the vote which they are doing and control a lot of the country especially in the southwest and texas.

President Ronald Reagan nailed it hard and clean nearly two decades ago: “The simple truth is that we’ve lost control of our own borders, and no nation can do that and survive. We ignore America’s lost sovereignty at our peril.” (10)

The United States of America is a nation governed by laws, and no one is supposed to be above the law. Apparently this does not include the governing bodies in many cities, counties, and states — who have taken an oath to uphold the laws and Constitution of the US – who are showing favoritism toward criminals at large by giving aid and comfort, at taxpayers expense, to the Mexican aliens who have crossed the American-Mexican border illegally. “No country can be great if its citizens are taught to look the other way while others wipe their feet on its laws and mock its national sovereignty.”
president barry soetoro is supporting this invasion and for one reason only, he will receive the majority vote from the illegasls and this may be enough to give the demo’nistas the power to change the term limits on the presidency and make their god “barry” our emperor.

you can find this article on google, i believe it is worth your while to read: “mexicos attempt to annex the southwest u.s”

all that it takes for bad people to win is for good people to do nothing in this great country of 300 million we have a lot of good people, that think with there heart not there head and when you do then it causes big problums, point it is a good thing to give as long as it is a helping hand, but when your helping hand becomes a handout then you are no longer doing good or helping what was a gift, you are now taking reguardless of the reason now some taking is for the good of the country as a whole[police fire roads]we are a coutry of laws and i add some are stuped but on the whole laws are the glue that holds us togetter, and when we allow the law enforcers local or state or federal to pick what laws to enforce we have major trouble, to finish as long as we the people allow anyone to tell us i won so set down and shut up[like obama did] email nepolitano tell her to do her job or resign on [she said being undocument is not illegal]illegals
,giving amnesty is like allowing a bank robber to keep the money he stole and not go to jail, as long as he don,t do it agin ,comprehensive immigration just a long word for amnesty no more no less it did not work in 1986 about 3 million amnested now 24 years later 20 million illegals not asking but DEMANDING is their any dought were i would go if i were in any pollcats, sorry politicion house and demanded anything i would be shot most likly so call your senators and say no more new laws enforce the immigration law now or we will replace you in nov, [GOOD LAW ARIZONA] if the illegals want to cause more trouble send the guard we will not allow crooks to burn and distroy property ,to illegals you want to be here get legal and if that is going home and doing it right so be it

  • Airangel

    1. Change the law that allows two illegals to produce a legal baby if it’s born in the USA (that will stop a lot right there)..deport the whole family back including baby.
    2. Clean up the border with military might and spend the 4 billion for the wall already drawn up and ready to implement…SECURE THE BORDER from future illegals and drug cartel lackeys (that will stop a lot right there too and cut off the drug supply wreaking havoc on this country)..this will be a fight but a necessary one!!
    3. As for current illegals (law breakers) I don’t have an answer other than to pay back the country they have stolen from with all the Government free programs such as housing, education, medical, food, etc…offer deportation of whole family or back fines as their penalty for breaking the law by taking from the American tax paying citizens…every crime has consequences…this is not a free ride. If they don’t pay the fines, deport them…at least they would be given a choice which is more than they deserve by not respecting us or their own countrymen who have immigrated legally and those in line to do so.

The money in millions if illegal fines and the savings in future moochers will pay for the wall. The drug confiscations will pay for the border war.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Airangel,
while I agree with most of what you say, I would never agree with another amnesty! NEVER! I fought against the scamnesty underBush and I will do the same under any president we have conservative or liberal or Progressive!!! Under Bush, I was at the phone and computer about 12 to 14 hrs a day and will do it again if needed!! One month I had a 300.00 phone bill to pay! I did it gladly!!

    • eddyjames

Airangle: No matter where the illegals are encountered they should be marched back to the border on foot, made to pick up and bag the trash along the way.recycling the cans and bottles would pay for the guards the ride shotgun on them. Once they reach the border put them in work camps for 5yrs and make them build a wall. I could be called “The Great Wall of Texas” has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Then throw their illegal asses out of the country with a warning that next time the punishment will be harsh.

    • eddyjames

WE could raise millions if not billions from the illegals is we would just Tax the money being sent back to Mexico. Say at 50%, not much higher a rate that people with jobs pay with state and federal income taxes, if even as much as we do. Have you ever been to Western Union on a Friday or Saturday night in the southwest? The illegals line up 30-40 deep to send money back to Mexico, our government could try taking from the illegals instead of us for a change. We could use the money to hire border guards to man the wall.

  • Chris

Michelle, You are wrong about the identie theft issue. All the Illegal immigrant has do is apply for a “IT” number from the fed, IT stands for Illegal tax Id # they then can file taxes for 2 years, & as long as they have opened a checking account at a bank & made deposits for 2 years, They then can even buy a home with a Goverment backed loan. I know, I have had several of the homes I had listed for sale bought by them!!! At closing, I would be there with the seller, The Illegal would be there with their Agent & a Interperator to explain to them what they were signing, they could not read, or write, or speak English, but they could buy a home!!! It blew me away that a illegal immigrant could buy a home here in the USA. I personally thought that it was a bunch of cr*p!!! Locally here, 5th 3rd bank was doing these loans, Backed by Fannie Mae

    • Airangel

Actually Chris I had heard that…whatever happened to background checks and feasibility checks for paying the loans back (real qualifying)…that is what happened in Detroit and why it’s a ghost town now…home loans were given to inner cities that could not pay the mortgage so they re-fied and guess what, they couldn’t pay those either…we need to stop with the bad credit lending and only allow those who have entered this country legally start a business or own a home…they can sponsor illegals and have them work for them but ANY illegal needs to immigrate legally for any ownership of property.

    • TIME

      Chris,
Yet one other trick used is one will get a job, work for a year then buy a car or truck, with a loan. Then take the car to one of their friend in a near by state, switch with them as they have done the same thing.

The repo man comes to take the car back and there is no car to take.

Or they claim it was stolen and get a full insurance pay off – oh and they keep the cash and skip to the next state.

      I got all this info from a Judge I know that stated the following;
“Its out of control and we can’t do anything about it as our hands are tied.”

  • http://charter howe

I am passing along a statement from Charlie Daniels. This is what he says: I don’t know how everybody else feels about it, but to me I think Hispanic people in this country, legally or illegally, made a huge public relations mistake with their recent demonstrations.

I don’t blame anybody in the world for wanting to come to the United States of America , as it is a truly wonderful place.
But when the first thing you do when you set foot on American soil is illegal it is flat out wrong and I don’t care how many lala land left heads come out of the woodwork and start trying to give me sensitivity lessons.

I don’t need sensitivity lessons, in fact I don’t have anything against Mexicans! I just have something against criminals and anybody who comes into this country illegally is a

criminal and if you don’t believe it try coming into America from a foreign country without a passport and see how far you get. What disturbs me about the demonstrations is that it’s tanta-mount to saying, “I am going to come into your country even if it means breaking your laws and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

It’s an “in your face” action and speaking just for me, I don’t like it one little bit and if there were a half dozen pairs of gonads in Washington bigger than English peas it wouldn’t

    be happening.

Where are you, you bunch of lily livered, pantywaist, forked tongued, sorry excuses for defenders of The Constitution? Have you been drinking the water out of the Potomac again? And even if you pass a bill on immigration it will probably be so pork laden and watered down that it won’t mean anything anyway Besides, what good is another law going to do when you won’t enforce the ones on the books now?

And what ever happened to the polls, guys? I thought you folks were the quintessential finger wetters. Well you sure ain’t paying any attention to the polls this time because

somewhere around eighty percent of Americans want some thing done about this mess, and mess it is and getting bigger everyday.

This is no longer a problem, it is a dilemma and headed for being a tragedy. Do you honestly think that what happened in France with the Muslims can’t happen here when the

businesses who hire these people finally run out of jobs and a few million disillusioned Hispanics take to the streets?

If you, Mr. President, Congressmen and Senators, knuckle under on this and refuse to do something meaningful it means that you care nothing for the kind of country your children and and grand-children will inherit. But I guess that doesn’t matter as long as you get re-elected. Shame on you. One of the big problems in America today is that if you have the nerve to say anything derogatory about any group of people (except Christians) you are going to be screamed at by the media and called a racist, a bigot and anything else they can think of to

    call you

Well I’ve been pounded by the media before and I’m still rockin’ and rollin’ and when it comes to speaking the truth I fear not.
And the truth is that the gutless, gonadless, milksop politicians are just about to sell out the United States of America because they don’t have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to face reality.

And reality is that we would never allow any other group of people to have 12 million illegal in this country and turn around and say, “Oh it’s ok, ya’ll can stay here if you’ll just allow us to slap your wrist.”

And I know that some of you who read this column are saying “Well what’s wrong with that?” I’ll tell you what’s wrong with it. These people could be from Mars as far as we know. We don’t know who they are, where they are or what they’re up to and the way the Congress is going we’re not going to.

Does this make sense? Labor force you say? We already subsidize corporate agriculture as it is, must we subsidize their labor as well? If these people were from Haiti would we be so fast to turn a blind eye to them or if they were from Somalia or Afghanistan? I think not.

All the media shows us are pictures of hard working Hispanics who have crossed the border just to try to better their life.
They don’t show you pictures of the Feds rounding up members of MS 13, the violent gang who came across the same way the decent folks did. They don’t tell you about the living conditions of the Mexican illegal some fat cat hired to pick his crop.

I want to make two predictions.

No. 1: This situation is going to grow and fester until it erupts in violence on our streets while the wimps in Washington drag their toes in the dirt and try to figure how many tons of political hay they can make to the acre.

No 2: Somebody is going to cross that border with some kind of weapon of mass destruction and set it off in a major American city after which there will be a backlash such as this country has never experienced and the Capitol building in Washington will probably tilt as Congressmen and Senators rush to the other side of the issue.

I don’t know about you but I would love to see just one major politician stand up and say, “I don’t care who I make mad and I don’t care how many votes I lose, this is a desperate situation and I’m going to lead the fight to get it straightened out.” I don’t blame anybody for wanting to come to America , but if you don’t respect our immigration laws why should you respect any others? And by the way, this is America and our flag has stars and stripes Please get that other one out of my face.

The concept of what constitutes a “right” has been muddled, perhaps purposely. Constitutionally, a “right” was defined by natural law (English common law) … that which takes nothing from anyone else and requires nothing of anyone else for its exercise. People have “rights”; Governments (the United States and the States) have “powers” but not “rights” (see 10A). Citizens, businesses, etc. may also have “privileges”. The exercise of a privilege requires an interaction with another entity or entities.
The United States was only “delegated” the “power” to control immigration “under” the Constitution and this delegation was done so by the people. The United States has failed to properly carry out this duty properly and has, therefore, abrogated the power delegated to it. It is, therefore, the prerogative of the States or the people to enforce these laws by reclaiming those delegated powers to enforce immigration from the United States. The United States should be informed that this will be done until such time as it (the US) is prepared to, and can be trusted to, properly carry out it’s delegated responsibilities as defined by our Constitution.
An ILLEGAL alien HAS “natural” rights as does everyone but NOT a citizens, or LEGALS, “privileges”(which are sometimes incorrectly, and confusingly, called “rights”).
The problem of ILLEGALS is so for many reasons. End WELFARE as we know it and remove the ILLEGALS from the workforce and those jobs that nobody will do will get done but at a nominally higher, more proper wage.
To starve is a persons “right” but to eat is a “privilege” unless he is eating that which he, himself, has produced; in which case it is then his “right” to eat his own production if he so desires.
Institute a FLAT, end-product, consumption tax (preferably the FAIR TAX) as the only allowable tax and we will see a resurgence of good, quality, manufacturing jobs in this country.
Put an end to Big Brother government and return to the “rule of law” (our Constitution) and we will see a return to liberty and prosperity.

  • william ahrens

The fed’s are guilty of malfeasance when it comes to border security and a solution to the illegal problem. States such as Arizona have had to pay the costs associated with interlopers while the fed’s just shrug their shoulders. We are a government of the people so if the fed’s will not do anything we’ll have to do it ourselves. The essence of what has become an invasion given the numbers, is Mexican belief they’re taking back their historic lands wrested from them by a growing 19th century power to the north. Problem is Mexico has been too corrupt to give them hope so they come here. If Mexicans take over the southwest, it’ll become as screwed up as Mexico. Amnisty is surrender.

  • OneDamnAngryAmerican

The IRS says that only 47% of American workers actually pay income taxes and that 53% do not! Know why? Excess children allow tax credits that zero out tax liabilities! How’s that grab ya!? Legal immigration should have deportation laws that say that if you need public assistance, then you need to go home and get it Ooops, sorry, that law already exists, but like all immigration law, is not being enforced by the feds! For a family of 3 illegals who do not pay taxes, due to low income, they are “entitled” to Section 8 vouchers up to $900 per month and Food Stamps up to $1,800 per month. And, who is paying for all of this? Those 47% of Amerian taxpayers who live fiscally responsible life-styles! That comes out to about $2,700 per month in freebies to illegal immigrants, paid for by “US!” Most Americans, today, don’t even earn $2,700 per month, due to the economy, yet our government even taxes “unemployment income” as well as regular wages of “legal” American citizens to help pay for these freebies. All gifts by our elected officials. Nice, huh?

  • s c

For those who don’t get it, Arizona’s new law is for those who live IN Arizona. It doesn’t affect anyone in any other state. Get it?
If it happens that this idea spreads to other states, I can live with that. I’m all for positive, much-needed ideas that catch on and spread to others states, especially if those ideas prove that Uncle Scam is a thug scumbag and needs to have his ‘face’ re-arranged.
Uncle Scam refuses to live within a budget, chases power like an old-fashioned ambulance chaser, whores after power like an in-house Stalin, protects criminals, avoids responsibility, caters to anyone who values illegal votes and thinks highly of those who would destroy America.
Uncle Scam REFUSES to his job. That makes him a world-class LOSER. Either Uncle Scam changes his ways, or Uncle Scam can take his chances with citizens who have been under his miserable thumb for generations.
The people in Greece may have more in common with Americans than our ‘leaders’ think. Arizona, tell Uncle Scam and his flunkies what they can do with their anti-freedom schemes. Do what Uncle Scam REFUSES to do, and please let the chips fall where they may.

If they are, watch for mass internment again, even worse than FDR’s in the 30′s! Note: When’s the last time you heard of where a “Marxist takeover” actually left from anywhere that it had taken over? Watch!

  • cemott3rd

All this is very nice chasing down folks who ‘look’ illegal and shipping them back across the border (they won’t be incarcerated long as the States have no $)…didn’t they do this before? Of course there really is no need for new laws, we just need to enforce the 1986 immigration act where an employer can be fined quite heavily for each illegal employee. I mean think about it, that’s why they come here and can remain here, because business owners give them your jobs and pay them less…right? But of course we wouldn’t want to piss off the business owners. it might get somwbody in trouble politically now wouldn’t it.

    • Al Sieber

The Feds. won’t enforce their own laws. everyone carries and is asked for I.D. in Arizona when you’re stopped. Az. I.D. or D.L. does satisfy the authorities in Az. before you couldn’t ask a persons status. illegal or not.

  • HFlashman

“papers please?” And they might nt even ask usig ‘please’. Undocumented workers are not just Hisanics. There are close to 1,000,000 Euro’s and Canadiens here as well. EVERYONE will have to carry ID with them at all times if in Arizona. Talk about a Police State? (Remember, a Driver’s License under Ariz. law is not ID which will satsfy the question.)

The answer to undocumented workers is simple..one which i have advocated for years. Don’t punish some poor slob doing what we always advocate as the American Way…getting a job. Instead, go after those AMERICANS who break the law ! If an employer knew or should have known their employee was undocumented…30 days in the county hoosegow. No probation. Serve the time. Social stigma alone will cause many to not break the law.

No jobs, no reason to be here looking for work.

Now everyone should be asking themselves….why isn’t this somethng advocated in Congress or the Media?

    • Jeep

Kind of hard to follow the “American way” if you’re not an American.

    • blamesomeoneelse

Funny you are ASSuming they come here for the jobs, they come here for many reasons, free healthcare, welfair, drug dealers, gang banggers, and so on. So who do you want to put in jail? Business owners because they cant ask if they are legal citizens.
How bout we have a crackdown on all speeders and put them in jail. Open up the highway for you to travel!

      • Jana

        blame,

The illegals are wanting respect. At least this is what some of their signs say. How come they don’t realize that goes both ways? They need to respect our laws, not break them. Come into this country legally. They need to respect our language and learn it, they need to respect our rights not to be used and stolen from.
One sign an illegal was holding up stated
        “give us FREE
        health care
        jobs- no taxes
        house
        food
        You owe us America.
We will shoot more police in Arizona until we get free.”

That certainly does not show us any respect. If they want respect they a. earn it and b. show respect back to us.

      • Al Sieber

Jana, I saw the same signs you are talking about. I also saw the riots in Santa Cruz N.M. that the media tried to cover up on May 1st. the people pouring over our southern borders don’t want to become Americans, the want to displace us and create their own society. they don’t want to work for anything.

      • MaryP

I think “WE” Americans need to have our own protests. Did anyone see the article about the kids wearing American Flag shirts to school on May 5th and a big brew haha started? They were told to turn their shirts inside out. Mexicans were mad cause it was their day…Are you kidding me? I don’t know about any of you but I’m tired of seeing the “rights” of American citizens being kicked around. What happened to freedom of speech? We’re supposed to be quiet and not “offend” anyone and be “politically correct”. If “you don’t like it leave”.We need to take our country back and our rights, and start pushing back. Sign me up!! And Mexico has some stones telling us how to run our country and warning their illegals about Arizona.

You might want to check your facts before mouthing off. The majority of this Arizona law has already been in place and does go after the businesses hiring illegals, placing penalties, fines and the possible loss of their business license. A valid U.S. driver’s license is valid proof to stop further investigation.
The stereotype immigrant is no longer the case. The current illegal takes from the U.S., does not pay taxes (if they do they have committed Identify Theft in order to get a social security number), gets a free education for their children, gets welfare benefits, free health care (and not just as the emergency room) and then they send their illegal earnings back to Mexico. Mexico is screaming because their revenue from illegal immigration is down now. Not to mention the crime rates in Arizona!
The Federal government refuses to take action so the only recourse this country has is for states to take action to protect the citizens.

      • Jana

        Michelle,
        Yes yes yes.

      • MaryP

        Michelle…Amen to that.

    • marvin

  • Al Sieber

I’m glad we have this law in Ariz., it’s about time. there has been some amendments added to this law after it was signed. but, I think they’re (the Feds.) are gonna over turn it anyways. I heard a protester say on t.v. yesterday that Phoenix was gonna burn like L.A., these are nice people.

    • marvin

Al Sieber yes and real gun kill real crooks

  • WEM

Yes, it is time for a reform. But in reality the immigration laws of this wonderful Nation are quite clear. Besides, as an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, one does not have rights. If you do not believe me, try to cross the border into our neighbor Country Mexico. You would be surprised of the requirements. Therefore: Why has it become such an issue? It is plain and simple, evry Nation has a US Embassy where you can request entry LEGALY into the US. It took us 13 years to obtain it, but we were granted entry and never had any problems.
CONGRATULATIONS ARIZONA, continue in doing the right thing. ONe more comment: Can you explain to me how profiling, in a certain way, could be avoided?

    • Jeep

WEM, you ask why illegal immigration has become an issue. That’s too easy. The democrats and their willing accomplices on the liberal left are salivating at the thought of the millions of new voters that will most likely keep them in power. The thought that this devastating influx of “new Americans” could damage our already weakened economy, or bring about a whole new generation of welfare recipients is of little consequence to them. And, to answer your thoughts on legal immigration, the idea that one would have to “wait” for the paperwork to be completed when all one has to do is climb a fence, or traverse the desert is often too much hassle. Besides, if the liberal Hispanic community can raise enough of a stink (maybe burn Phoenix?) then they know that the current crop in Washington will have “no choice, but to grant citizenship”. After all, who could ever expect a liberal to round up illegals and enforce our laws.

  • Barb

Kudos to Arizona and I hope more states do the same and soon! Something needs to be done about this before it gets completely out of control, and it basically already is! Amnesty is not the answer either and Obama and crew had better not even try to go there!

    • Save America Susie

I agree. Amnesty is not the answer. Other Presidents have done it and it has not solved things. My main concern is screening people so we don’t have a criminal element in our country. On the other hand, it should NOT have to take 10 years to get your citizenship like our good Tanzania, African friends. They finally got their legal dual-citizenship, but it was years of red tape when their papers were in order for years, just sitting. These people are a great asset to our country, yet why did it take so long? My maternal Irish grandparents came over in 1915 immigrating through Canada with their papers the right way (which I still have), and I know it did not take them that long. Maybe a couple of years, if that. And People who came through Ellis island didn’t have the red tape we have now. REFORM DOES NEED TO HAPPEN as well!

      • Chewy

Save America Suzie, you have hit the nail on the head. We absolutely need to make it easier to get legal status, but unfortunately our Government can’t seem to do anything easily or quickly, except pass a trillion dollar takeover of health care. We are all immigrants, unless you are 100% American Indian, you can from immigrants. I am so SICK of the left using the race card for every topic. If we don’t agree with or like Obama we are raciest rednecks,If we don’t want to live under socialism we hate poor people, if we don’t believe in man made global warming we are ignorant “flatlanders” who don’t care if we destroy the planet, and if we want illegal immigration to be illegal, we hate Latinos. The left wants amnesty because it would add to their voting base, PERIOD, SO THEY CAN KEEP MOVING AHEAD WITH THEIR SOCIALIST AGENDA. This President has done more to divide this country than any President in modern history. I have absolutely no problem with the Mexican people wanting to come here for a better life, I simply want them to do it legally, to have a drivers license and INSURANCE, and live under the same laws and rules that the rest of us have to abide by.. November is coming and We The People can start cleaning house, and getting rid of these politicians that are tearing our country apart.Get EVERYBODY you know to the poles in November, EVERY VOTE COUNTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CJ

A contributing problem is federal laws that inhibit the necessary steps to achieve success. They may not be kind, but the alternative is WORSE! The harder you make the job for enforcement, the less enforcement that gets results. Laws that restrict “profiling” due to discrimination make it nearly impossible. EVERY law discriminates in some way. Human nature is to do a task as quickly and efficiently as possible. Making it inefficient with extra laws means 1) it will cost more, 2) it won’t get done, or 3) both! Something has to be done because doing nothing is bleeding our resources. The benefit of letting illegals in DOES NOT outweigh the detriment.

  • Joseph Callewaert, Marquette County, MI

When it comes to State’s Rights, I’m all for the right to “CHOOSE.”
Excellent “CHOICE” Arizona, one laboratory of ideas among many. Ideas have consequences, so let us all support their bold expirementation now.

  • JC

Real Immigration Reform has to happen. We are over run with people who do not contribute and we simply can not afford it. While I feel some sympathy for those who want a better life I also feel that they should do more to reform the country from which they originate. Or at least be willing to take on the responsibilities of helping to carry the load in their new home. But a “policy” of freebies does not encourage the more lazy among us to pull up their socks now does it?
    Go Arizona!

    • http://huddiscrimination.bravehost.com Elizabeth

      Thumbs Up !! I agree . .
They have their own country that much can be done with…they are destroying this one shredding would be more the expression, with our own government approving. Praying more states follow Arizona.

    • SiliconDoc

I don’t feel a drop of sympathy for the illegals. I want a better life too, but that doesn’t mean I march my @ss into Beverly Hills and plop down in the finest home I can break into.
Doesn’t mean I crash some wine and cheese tasting dinner at some fancy restaurant down by the beach, and since I’m starving, dig right in ! Maybe I’ll carry a beach chair for some old princess hag and that makes up for it ?
How about I just walk into your employer and start up working and demand that paycheck you were going to get ? Heck we know it’s a job Americans don’t want to do.
NO I HAVE ZERO PITY AND ZERO LOVE AND ZERO SYMPATHY FOR THE CRIMINALS.
They obviously were surviving quite well in Mexico since they paid the coyote smuggler two grand to smuggle them across, and survived the harsh desert and dehydrating and long treck conditions so they were in top shape, meat on the bones, healthy as a rat in New York, and not some pathetic dying sack of crap.

  • Miguel Melgar

Since the Immigration Law of Arizona was passed there has been much discussion about immigration. Many different arguments have been presented pro and con. However, the following does not seem to appear in the discussions

Let us start off with the fact that Hispanics are currently last on the academic ladder in this country. Many reasons have been given for this failure. But not the following.

The USA is a pluralistic country. There are people from all religions. Until recently the largest group were the Baptists who had approximately 18%. Since the Hispanic wave the Catholics have risen to over 26% and there seems no end in sight to this increase. This leads me to an observation and a prediction.

This first is that in countries where there is pluralism there is a tendency to study by comparative analysis and critical thinking. In countries where 95% or more of the population is of one religion, there seems to be an academic environment of teaching by memorization. I have studied in a comparative analysis type of academic environment, and have always tried to teach in the same manner. I have also developed a teaching technic of answering a question with a question leading to the answer. The Hispanic environment in Miami-Dade will not tolerate either one. I have been criticized many times for teaching more than one way of solving a math problem. That confuses the student. I maintain that if a student gets confused when presented more than one method, the student did not understand the problem. He/she has simply memorized an algorithm. In Miami-Dade I am not allowed to teach more than one method and I am not allowed to answer a question with a question leading to an answer. That is the Hispanic influence.

The second point is a prediction. When the percent of Hispanics increases to the point where more than 40% of the nation is Catholic, pluralistic democracy, as we know it, will disappear. I suspect that this is what the American citizenry is subconsciously worried about.

One of the main complaints that I hear in recent days is that Muslims come to this country and then demand that they are allowed to imposed their Shia to the rest of the country. The Hispanics have been doing no different. They are escaping the poverty and misery and bringing the cause of their poverty with them to this country, that is, a monolithic environment with no pluralism allowed, mainly Catholicism. In the Miami museum a poem Desiderata was presented. In the poem there is a passage A God, whatever you conceive him to be. This passage was eliminated in the Spanish version. There was only one concept of God allowed. We had my mother’s funeral at a Catholic funeral parlor. We were not allowed to have Humanist cards. Catholic only. That is no different from the Muslim attitudes.

Thank you for allowing me to express myself.

    Sincerely,

    Miguel Melgar

You present some interesting ideas, Miguel. My question to you involves the centralized, monolithic approach of apostate ‘major’ faiths in America. While some rant and rave about the ‘establishment’ of a state-sanctioned religion, we are fast approaching that irreversible day.
As bad as dictators can be, they can’t be compared to world religious power that controls everyone everywhere. At this rate, it won’t take much for it to materialize.
Do you think there is a single faith on earth that won’t be used, abused and manipulated by this pretender superfaith? While I shudder at the thought, America’s role in this travesty will not be a small part.
      What do you think?

    • TIME

      Miguel,
Your post is very well thought out – I for one thank you for your candor and honest opinions.
My Grandmother was Cuban she was a truly sweet woman who loved life and enjoyed good food, flowers and learning new things all the time.

She lost her whole family after Castro took over Cuba, I think that broke her heart really to the core. Anyway she became an American citizen in the early 1950′s she always took great pride in telling everyone she was an American who came from Cuba.

She always felt the same way you do, to answer a question with a question to make you explore every possible nook to find answers.
She is the main reason I feel I worked so hard to make it. She was a great role model.
She always said if you want something, love what you do, work hard at it, and you can do anything and go anywhere.

      • marvin

TIME this was a truly wonderful american where she was born had nothing to do with being american thats like being a african american or hispanic american that is ambiguity or a oxamoron light and dark can not be in the same place at the same time you are an american first of cuban mexican or so on

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Time,
she sounds like a truly beautiful lady!!

      • Claire

TIME–Your Grandmother was a great lady. She sounds wonderful. I am happy you had someone like her in your life. Bless you and her too.

      • TIME

Claire, Joe, Marvin, As I have said many times I was very poor in wealth when I was a child, but I was RICH in other areas such as role models, the folks that brought me up we very special people who tought me to dream and to think about what kind of person I would be.
My Grandmother and Gpops they were the only link to my real family, as I have noted mt Gpop was not well but he was a great role model too, he worked for Holland America lines from the late 1940′s until he passed on in the early 1970′s. He never missed a days work.

I really believe thats whats wrong with our country now, saddly kids don’t have real role models that give any positive vibes back to the them.
I have seen this in my role in Big Brother’s, though I have only worked with 4 kids in the last 25 years. Each one is doing well today, two have done really well, one is working as a Pilot the other teaches at UCLA. The other went to school then went into the Marine Corp and is a Captain now.

Our last one has been living with us for nine years; as his mother walked away and left him when he was seven years old.
Well in June 2010 he will be graduating High School, he turns 17 in July and He has already been snapped up by Cal Tec where he will be starting in September. We could not be more proud of him.

Our Youth is our future, we need to be there for them and show them what our Grandparents went through, what thier’s went through and help them to understand why the United States is so special and unlike any other country in the world.
There is no other country in the world that you can come from very humble roots and make it.

        * Happy Mothers Day, to all whom that applies too.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Time,
You echo what I have said for years. The kids in the depressed parts of cities consider sports figures as heroes and icons when the true heros and icons they should look to is the father that stays and dupports his family through hard work and determination. there is your true “hero”!!!!

    • Jana

      Miguel M,
Catholisism and Christianit for the most part are pretty much the same. Catholics are Christians, they believe in Jesus dieing on the Cross for our Salvation.

Religion is not the problem with ILLEGAL immigration. It is when the people come over from other countries illegally, they do not meld in with the rest of the country. Many do not even intend to stay here, just come long enough to make enough to go home and have a good life.
Many also come over here to get free medical, food stamps and money from the government.

Along the way of their travels they steal from the citizens of this country, then when they apply for aid, they steal again. They haven’t put anything into the coffer to help pay for these things. Then when the citizens need help there isn’t enough to go around.

I have lived near the border, and also know first hand the uncleanliness of these illegals. I have had to help clean up their messes, up to and including where they potty such as on the doorstep of businesses in the downtown area. They also go into stores and go to the bathroom in the dressing rooms instead of going to a facility in the store for such purposes.

We are a country of laws, and these illegals stealing their way into our country is breaking the law, ergo the name ILLEGALS.

Our country is made up of immigrants, legal immigrants. We have always been a melting pot of peoples and even religions. But the ILLEGALS have no intention of melting in, nor of learning English, yet they are in Arizona DEMANDING THEIR RIGHTS. Excuse me, they have the right to go home!

As far as the Islamists are concerned, they are also DEMANDING more rights than the rest of us are allowed, so yes, we do have a problem with that too. Lets be fair to all, if they are illegal, then that is breaking our laws. If we went into Mexico to work without the proper permits we would be arrested; if the Islamists are allowed to worship openly, then so should the Christians/Catholics.

      • Jana

Sorry for the typos, I should have proof read.

      • GregS

Well said, Jana. In this whole debate, there are so many people out there who don’t distinguish between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigrants. They go off on a tangent about immigrants in general, just to take the attention away from the fact that ILLEGALs have broken the law.

      • http://www.personalliberty.com DaveH69

HOW’S THIS FOR A GREAT ‘SOCIALIST’ IDEA ? — Every Arizona-registered Dumm-o-crat should be required to SPONSOR (SUPPORT by means of house, clothe, provide/pay-for work around the house/apt., & pay for individual good health) an illegal alien and/or illegal family. I mean ROUND UP (humanely) the law-breaking illegals and DISTRIBUTE (humanely) to each and every known Liberal according to their ‘means’ (Richest 1st) and Public Service ‘status’ (Highest-Ranking State Gov’t Dem. to lowliest) !!

    • Tim

      Miguel,
Half my family are Hispanic and Catholic. I have never witnessed an card be denied at a funeral, let alone be denied because of religious or even non religious reasons. I imagine a card that was distasteful might be rejected, but I have never scene that happen either. Next, the majority of immigrants from Hispanic countries are actually socialist, which is why South America and Central America is the way it is today. But I will agree that monolistic thinking as you but it is detrimental, but this comes from the socialist side of latino culture more so than the Catholic side.

    • The People

I have been working in Canada for the past 2 years. When I watch the TV to see what is going on in MY country, its quite sickening to watch. I served 4 years for my country and I am proud of that, but when I see a government that that reminds me of the snakes in the grass, I wonder if it is worth going back. Our Government is weak. They crawl on their bellies because they are not worthy to walk amongst the American people. Arizona, we are all proud of the steps you are taking in ensuring the public’s safety and economic stature. Shame on you Obama Admin. for making the American public hang their head in disgrace. You are drowning what this very country was founded upon. We the people must get back to the basics, and stand tall and be heard!!!!!!!!!!
