Unions: Arizona Immigration Law Prompts Hispanics To Look To Organized Labor
May 5, 2010 by Personal Liberty News Desk
On May 1, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a major labor union, rallied against Arizona’s new immigrant law during protests held across the country.
The rallies were held from California to Chicago to Washington, D.C., and the unionists—joined by faith, business and civil rights leaders—also called for a comprehensive Federal immigration reform.
"SEIU members will be marching on Saturday to remind politicians and citizens that comprehensive immigration reform is good for our economy and good for America," the organization said in a statement issued the day before.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that union representatives have been seeing a surge in inquiries from Hispanic workers in Arizona who worry that the law will lead to more police raids in their workplaces, according to The Business Journal.
"They want some protection to be able to counteract some of this stuff," said Scott Washburn, state director of the SEIU, quoted by the news provider.
"The more downward pressure you put on workers, the more likely they are to join a union," added Rebekah Friend, state director of AFL-CIO, another labor union.
In her view, the immigration debate is encouraging more Hispanics to look at organizing and becoming more involved politically, the Journal further reported.
