With No Federal Plan In Place, State Lawmakers Look To Implement Aggressive Immigration Reform

May 3, 2010 by

With no federal plan in place, state lawmakers look to implement aggressive immigration reformOn the heels of the recent passage of Arizona’s historic and controversial new immigration law, lawmakers in at least five other states are calling for their legislatures to implement similar measures.

With a federal plan nowhere near complete, political leaders from Utah, Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Maryland are pushing for aggressive state laws to help curb illegal immigration, CBS News reports.

Texas State Representative Debbie Riddle said that she will introduce a similar bill to the one recently passed in Arizona during Texas’ next legislative session in January, Newsmax reports.

Riddle added that "if [the] Federal government did their job, then Arizona wouldn’t have to take this action, and neither would Texas."

Meanwhile, illegal immigration is expected to be a major issue of concern in the upcoming midterm elections. In Georgia, Republican gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal is already beginning his push for stricter state regulations concerning immigration.

"I agree with the Arizona governor and legislature that the Federal government has failed miserably at protecting our borders and enacting sensible solutions that would protect our states, counties and cities from bearing the enormous costs associated with illegal immigration," Deal said on Tuesday. "As governor of Georgia, I’d work to pass and sign similar legislation."

A newly inaugurated Barack Obama pledged to tackle immigration reform during his first year in office. But no legislation has been passed, major workplace raids that made headlines during the Bush Administration are a distant memory, and no new funding for manpower or critical programs is in the pipeline.

“The border security implications are frightening,” said T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, the union for the front-line officers.

It’s no surprise, observers say, that as the federal government fails to address the issue, border states are taking matters into their own hands by cracking down on illegal immigration, including a new Arizona law that gives local police some of the same powers enjoyed by their federal partners to identify those in the country illegally.
Rep. Lamar Smith (R.-Tex.), ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, criticized the administration’s spending priorities for next year which he says includes no funding for new detention beds, no increase to find and deport immigration fugitives or criminal aliens, no additional special agents to investigate workplace immigration violations, no funding to expand the visa security program, and no funding for new border-fence construction.

“The President ought to be using immigration enforcement to address key priorities such as jobs and national security,” Smith said. “But instead of doing so, the Obama Administration is maintaining the status quo.”

The administration is looking to eliminate 180 administrative border patrol jobs in the coming year even as violence along the Southwest border continues to escalate — an Arizona sheriff’s deputy was shot by drug suspects last week, following the murder weeks earlier of an American rancher by border crossers on his own property.

“The Border Patrol catches about one-third (of illegal aliens) that come across, that is not border security, that is a joke,” Bonner said. “But to say we are just going to maintain that level of control is unacceptable.”

The administration has also proposed cuts for border agents to work overtime, Bonner said.

“Weekends and holidays are peak smuggling periods. And if we’re in the middle of a pursuit at the end of a shift, are we just supposed to stop?” Bonner asked. “America deserves and needs far better.”

The numbers verify the decline in federal border involvement.

In fiscal 2008, the last year of the Bush Administration, total criminal arrests during worksite enforcement efforts totaled 1,103. That’s compared to 410 arrests in 2009 and 85 arrests in the current fiscal year as of February 10, according to statistics provided by Rep. Smith. Indictments numbered 900 in 2008, compared to 376 in 2009 and 52 in 2010. Convictions in all years were comparable.

“That’s precisely the reason Arizona had to do what it did,” said Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). “The Obama Administration has gutted worksite enforcement efforts.”

However, Homeland Security Department officials say significant progress has been made during the Obama Administration to improve border security and immigration enforcement, and that 20,000 agents are deployed nationwide, including 4,000 agents in Arizona.

“The Department of Homeland Security has dedicated unprecedented manpower, technology, and infrastructure resources to the Southwest border over the course of the past 14 months,” said Matt Chandler, department spokesman. “The administration continues to evaluate additional law enforcement options as needed, including the use of the National Guard, along the Southwest Border. We continue to work with Congress on comprehensive reform of our immigration system, which would provide lasting and dedicated resources at our borders.”

The number of I-9 inspections, which are audits to ensure businesses are hiring legal residents, has spiked significantly in the Obama administration.

In the last year of the Bush administration, there were 503 inspections, but the number nearly tripled in the first year of the Obama administration to 1,444. To date in fiscal year 2010, there have been 1,180 inspections with potential fines of nearly $3 million.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has signed several bilateral agreements with her Mexican counterparts to coordinate incident response and cooperation between law enforcement activities along the border. Napolitano has also refocused the administration’s priorities on identifying violent criminals who are already incarcerated and in the country illegally, then returning them to their country of origin after they have completed their jail sentence.

According to statistics provided to HUMAN EVENTS by the Homeland Security department, more than 127,000 criminal aliens have been identified in the last year. No numbers were provided on how many have been deported.

As political stands go, the priority to remove incarcerated aliens is “a no-brainer,” Mehlman said. “Obviously, no one objects to deporting violent criminals. They should not be here in the first place. That’s just common sense.”

Even with the border issue erupting with the enactment of the Arizona law, the White House is reluctant to take the matter on during an election year.

Obama made a rare appearance in the press cabin aboard Air Force One and “sounded skeptical that he would sign comprehensive immigration reform this year,” Politico reported Friday.

He wants Congress to press forward with immigration reform but said he’s unsure lawmakers have the “appetite” to get it done or that it would pass without Republican support.

“So it’s a matter of political will,” Obama said. “Now, look, we’ve gone through a very tough year, and I’ve been working Congress pretty hard. So I know there may not be an appetite immediately to dive into another controversial issue. There’s still work that has to be done on energy. Midterms are coming up.”

“I don’t want us to do something just for the sake of politics that doesn’t solve the problem,” Obama said. He doesn’t want to do anything that would benefit or protect Americans.

Shortly after Neapolitano was put in charge, there was an ICE raid of a packing plant here in Washington that found womething like 35 illegals working.
The person that conducted the raid, was censured, insulted on the local news media as having overstepped his authority, and nothing has been heard of since. And there have been no raids that I have heard of since.
I have 2 sons grown and well trained with years of experience in ther trades. One a Carpenter, the other an Electrician. Both are out of work. Have been for months. But go to any Construction site and count the Hispanics working there. And bet all of them are not there legally, and all are not fully qualified to be doing the job anyway.

      • Nancy Carpenter

Amen! I’ve got unemployed, skilled, educated family members as well – and they’re all American citizens!

      • Claire

The illegals will work for low wages. That is the difference. Companies do not want to pay benefits, hospitalization, nothing. This is the problem we face. This will continue until such time the illegals are sent packing. The government needs to get on the ball and do right by America and all Americans. But, if companies have to pay more wages they will probably move to foreign countries. Seems like this is the name of the game.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Jim Shatz,
The even more stupid part is some are arrested, given a date to appear and released. Now I realize, being the upstanding people they are, that the government should take their word on SOME things, BUT A PROMISE TO APPEAR?!?!?!? The government has lost all common sense it ever had, if it ever had any!!!

  • Big M

The president and representatives took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, they have ignored it. If in the Military they would be tried for treason, why not vote them out and put them in front of a jury of real citizens. Then limit their time in office as our founders suggested.

  • Dusted_Eagle

The State of Arizona, and others, will never get reimbursed for enforcing federal laws, no matter what they may be. The taxpayer will be forced to pay for the costs of illegal immigration, both by federal and state taxes. This is how the feds will get to keep our money and never provide the services the law says they are required to do.

To fix the financial mess left in America by the liberals, we will need to decrease the size of the federal government and start rolling back the amount we all pay in federal taxes.

Something most of us may have missed this last weekend, is that there are more illegals residing in Arizona then there are US soldiers stationed in all of the USA.

In Las Vegas (one of the 237 cities identified by the FBI as being controlled by Mexican drug lords) the M-13 Mexican prison gang has a total membership of 10K plus members. The City of Las Vegas has an illegal population of about 400K, plus or minus.

Of the M-13 gang members, alone, there are more of them living and conducting business in Las Vegas, then there are American servicemen/women stationed at Nellis and Creech AFB’s (Nellis is within the city limits & Creech is about 11 miles north of town).

We are in big trouble folks, and the feds are not lifting one finger to help us!

Harry Reid said it correctly (for those liberals). We will do nothing to protect America and the Constitution, because “there are just too many of them” (the illegals).

Since when has any American citizen stopped taking the bull by the horns and take care of business? Since the 1980′s when Bill Clinton gave them all amnesty, that’s when!

    • Nancy Carpenter

Yes, Clinton started it with leniency. W added to it because of his “big corporation” contacts who employ them, and hire them as gardeners and nannies, etc. BO is adding to it by ignoring it and condemning the only state that has finally decided to just say no to illegals and DC. Congress, as usual, does nothing but try to find ways to put more money in their own and their lobbyists’ pockets. Vote all of them out in November!

  • Marilyn

Am I wrong? I think there are existing Federal rules and laws about immigration. My forefathers had to go through the rigors of it all. Learn English, Take Exams, Work Hard, Pledge to be an American….so help them God. What has changed? Is the United States Government ignoring all of this? I pray that every State follows Arizona’s lead. If the “changed” United States Government will not enact the written laws, then the States should by all means take command and pass laws to prevent unwanted Illegals from staying in the United States. It isn’t only about Mexicans, there are thousands of Immigrants (people) in the United States who are illegal AND no green cards. We are hell bent on sending illegals back to where they came from but that must include all illegals from all nationalities, doesn’t it? If citizens are paying illegal’s rent and board and all the other expenses, we should know about this and absolutely refuse to allow our tax dollars to be used in this manner. If Illegals are setting up war camps, we need to get rid of them. If Obama wants to make all illegals United States Citizens, guess why? The allmighty VOTE! It’s not pity, believe me!
Obama promised ‘change’ but I think Americans are getting more change than they ever dreamed would happen.

Remember to VOTE every chance you get.

  • http://ohioteaparty.com Jon Hogan

Hi everyone. I want to tell you a little about myself. I drive a truck (Big Rig) all 48 states for a living. The Fed. Gov. is lying to you when they say that the illeagles are only here doing jobs that Americans don’t want to do. The truth is that every single place that I go to on the job is full of Mexicans. Factories, forklift drivers dock formens, Distribution centers and warehauses – these are not jobs that Americans won’t do exactly the opposite these are the jobs most are looking for. I never new how bad the problem was until I started driving 4 years ago because where I live I have never seen an illeagle but now I am overwelmed by the problem. The Truth will set you free.

  • Michelle

Secure the borders. Harsh laws for illegal aliens coming to US and harsh laws for companies that hire them. Companies hiring illegals is a major problem. Cut off ALL assistance, no health care, no food stamps, no housing assistance, no free education – NOTHING. They are not citizens why should we pay anything for these people. Cut out the incentives for them coming.
Politicians want votes, so they just keep them coming. They are destroying America!

    • Nancy Carpenter

Best suggestions I’ve seen yet! Other than to shoot to kill as they step across the border.

      • American Liberal

Everyone of you rightwingers claims to be disabled… But you hate government and all claim you can’t get benifits because illegal aliens get them and you can’t….you don’t see the hypocracy here?…you all claim to hate paying taxes but feel you deserve government benifits… Lol..I think you’re just aginst our president because he happens to be black….your aginst EVERYTHING now that president Obamas president… None of these issues came up while we had a rightwing neo con idiot screwing this country up…your racist… Don’t even bother to deny it..

      • Al Sieber

Hey Amer. Lib., I’m not a right or left winger, I’m a American that wants to see it’s leaders abide by the constitution, not change it,or disregard it. I vote for who I think will do the most good for this country, not for who will give us the most free stuff. I don’t listen to Beck,Rush,Hannity etc. I don’t consider those people true conservatives, when Pres. Obama gave his first state of the union address he promised the minorities free everything, now they demand it. how the hell do we pay for this? does 40% of the people working and paying taxes in this country have to pay for the 60% that aren’t or won’t? what happens when the unemployment benefits run out for one million people in June? and all the people who’s house payments come due, June and July and they can’t make them? wheres all the jobs that were suppose to be created? why is the war expanded 3x-bigger? why are our borders wide open, with thousands of criminals pouring in every day? it looks like a agenda to me. the situation looks ripe for riots in our cities this summer, thats why theres foreign troops on our soil standing by.

      • http://yahoo MARK

YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE FOREIGN TROOPS. I AM GLAD THERE ARE OTHERS THAT DO NOT HAVE THEIR HEAD IN THE SAND. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THE BIG WORLD WIDE PICTURE FOR A DECADE NOW AND I FEEL YOU ARE RIGHT. THE LAST MANY PREDIDENTS HAVE ONLY WORKED TO DIVIDE OUR COUNTRY NOT MAKE IT STRONGER. DIVIDE AND CONQUER. THE AMERICAN CITIZEN NEEDS TO TAKE OFF THEIR “PARTY ALLEGIENCE” HAT AND PUT ON AN AMERICAN HAT AS WE WILL BE GOING AGAINST FOREIGN TROOPS ALONG WITH US TROOPS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. DON’T THINK THESE FOREIGN TROOPS GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION OR YOUR WIFE OR KIDS OR PETS OR PROPERTY. THE WORLD HATES AMERICANS THANKS TO OUR POLITICIANS . IT WILL BE A KILLING SPREE FOR THEM ANG BIG GOV”T. AND DEATH TO THE DIVIDED AMERICANS DIVIDED WE STAND SO DIVIDED WE ALL WILL FALL.

They should be in every book in every school room in every city in every state in our great Union.
Our educators should make a lesson plan on these statements and instill these words in the minds of all students.
1*You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2*What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3*The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else..
4*When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.
5*You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it…”
        Adrian Rogers, 1931

        Blame,

These are wonderful words of wisdom, but no socialist/progressive teacher or sympathizer will ever post them on any classroom wall. Nevertheless, we must do what we can to learn from these words and teach our children and others the wisdom in them. Thanks.

        Reb,
I wonder what would be the easiest way to get foreign troops into this country without anyone noticing??? Be real easy to mix them in with the Mexicans coming over the border. 20 million illegals here and they’re in every state. What if only 10% are here for a reason???
2 Million here at Obummers beck and call???

  • Al Sieber

These people break our laws, take our tax dollars, then march in the streets demanding more. these people are not the same ones I remember wanting to come here to work. the majority of them are gang members, drug dealers, thieves, child molesters etc. and we owe them what? the U.S. has become Mexico’s dumping ground for criminals. they need to go back to Mexico and put their effort into changing their own Govt. instead of demanding and ordering our Govt. to do it. we’re sick of the crime and violence here in Ariz.

    • USN-Pops

Mexico refuses to take back any of their citizens convicted of a crime in another country. So we’re stuck with them if they break our law and are convicted.

And all we can do in most cases is take a busload of illegals into Mexico, drop them off, and watch as within hours they have come back.

      We need more Sherrif Joes.

      • http://yahoo MARK

Ricky, I am from Georgia also. The Gainesville area. You cannot tell me anything new about the situitation. Don’t expect Sonny to do squat about this problem. He might talk it up,but then give his blessings on his choice for the new Gov. in hopes for votes. Remember he is the first Republican gov in over 150 years. I was an instructor at a Truck Driving school back in 2004. Ga. was the only state in the US that required anyone re-newing or applying for a CDL to register with Bushs “Homeland Security”. Sonny loves G.W. Remember Bush, he and his lover “El Presidente” del Mexico, helped trash the law by importing so many from south of the border to our country with such a decline in law enforcement. All of this has been covered by previous commentors. Nathan Deal will hopefully be brought up on charges for his illegal activities while in Washington as our rep. Him and the Lt. Gov Cagle. You do read the paper I’m sure. Remember the special election coming up soon to fill Deals seat as he quit to avoid prosecution. He says to run for gov. A coward or a quitter(a CROOK) anyway you look at it. If you really want to help our state please check out RAY McBERRY. He is PRO Constitution. He is also responsible for the pressure in Atlanta to file suit aginst the Obamacare bill. He has spent the past decade teaching about our Constitution and is as close as an expert as there is. He is in support of the 10th Ammendment. That basically says that the states are soverign from the Fed and vise versa. The states need to deal with the problem and tell Washington to take a hike. Under our Constitution they have no authority to force anything on the states. Please everyone who reads this write your elected officials and and tell all tour friends to do the same. The states and their representatives wrote the US Constitution not the Feds. We formed them not they us. Hall county, where Gainesville is ,was named for Lyman Hall, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Nathan Deal is from here and should be run out of town, tared and feathered. Cagle lives just down the street. He should go with him. Sorry to get off track but you need to realize that most politicians are crooks. It takes the millionaires club to get in and once in you have health care, and retiremant that you and I will never have. They make laws that they are immune to. The best advise I can give is ALWAYS VOTE INCUMBENTS OUT. Dems and Republicans. We had a chance with Ron Paul. The guy who would, once sworn in to office would have gotten us out of the UN, NAFTA and CAFTA. John McCain and big mouth Palin. Give me a break. Look at the bills McCain is supporting and who supports him. Elections have consequences folks. Never support the main stream candidate from either party. Scott Brown from Mass. Who are you kidding. Educate yourselves on who you vote for by their affiliations and voting record. The truth shall set you free!

I was injured at work in 2006 and settled with Workers Comp, but in the process, I lost my health insurance as well as my job. I went to a local Social Services office to see if I could get JUST medical help until Medicare kicked in. The office was composed of 95% Spanish speaking mothers, tons of children, and a very large sign was hanging that said “WE PROVIDE TRANSLATORS”… I was sickened by the entire scene and have emailed many politicians, asking why our taxpayer dollars (I worked full time and paid taxes for 47 years) are paying for translators so that we can hand over welfare benefits, food stamps, medical care and schooling for people who can’t even bother to learn English!! Due to the fact that I took Social Security early (in order to survive) and was given a small monthly payment by Workers Comp, they said I didn’t qualify for Medicaid, even on a temporary basis. We, the legal citizens of this country, must take a stand NOW. Our prisons are full of illegals – why aren’t we shipping them back to Mexico instead of giving them housing, food and medical care on OUR tab??

My wife was injured at work, lost the use of her left arm. We jumped through hoops for a year & a half to either fix the problem so she could get back to a regular life or if disabled get her on dissability. the doctors for workmans comp. couldnt figure out what the problem was & told us that there was nothing wrong with her but put a dozen work restrictions on her, makes it kinda hard to find a job with work restrictions on your record. She got fired from the job she had where she got hurt & recieved a $ 5400.00 settlement (which after the lawer got his came to $ 1600.00 for us)& was told she was going to have to retrain. I myself have had my neck, back, & hip broken working for other people & have never gotten any help for any of it. I had to pay my own doctor bills & have never recieved one cent of compensation. I have a small home based business, dosen’t make a lot but helps pay the bills. Unemployment told us they would pay my wife through the schooling to retrain. Well she still has a year of school to complete & was informed the other day that her unemployment was being cut. We went to social services to try to just get help to get through this next year so my wife wouldn’t have to quit school & get some kind of job so we don’t loose our house & cars. After a half a day wait we were told that we didn’t make enough money to recieve assistance-I swear to God thats what they told us. While waiting to get told the most redundant statement I’ve ever heard we realized that we were the only white people in there & were the only ones other than the staff that could speak english (by the way the whole staff was of mexican descent)also we were the only people in there with only one child, everyone else had at least 5 or 6 if not more & all of them left in cars, pickups, & S.U.V’s that if they weren’t new they weren’t far from it & not one of them was denied services, except for my wife & I. They treated us as though we were trying to pull a fast one on the system & wanted a free ride for the rest of our lives. I don’t even like the fact of having to go there in the first place, it’s not something I’m proud of. Nothing like begging for a few crumbs, realy makes you feel like a man. You can call me a bigot but I know damn good & well if I was any color but white we would of gotten help. Our president calls me a terrorest because I’m not a blind sheep that follows the flock, I’m white,I’m a free thinker,I believe in government but not the one we’re stuck with & I will not lay down & submit to the wolves as a blind sheep would, pray for the best & prepare for the worst because the worst is yet to come, we haven’t seen nothing yet.

Go to Kroger and you see man,. woman four childen or more with two carts full of food paying with food stamps and cant understand why this state has gone to the dogs? Every worker putting on new roofs, fencing from big stores are Mexicans and yet legal people cannot find jobs… it has to stop and I applaud Arizona for doing so.More money is given for illegals in welfare sos.sec. and jobs in Ohio than for legals.. make them do as others had to do apply. learn English and wait their turn… its all about votes people votes…and the guys in office say they are making jobs Where and for whom?

    • Nancy Carpenter

Not just in Ohio. You should see them in Queens, NY! and on the number 7 train! Too many anchor babies. The NYCity infrastructure is falling apart because the subways, schools, hospitals and even our sewers can’t handle the influx of the illegal population – not just from Mexico but from many other Central and South American countries as well as many Asian countries. The gangs on LI are notorious, as are the swarms of illegals living in tents on other people’s property. Thank you Arizona for taking the first step.

      charlie,
I don’t know if you live near Lake county, but we had a general contractor work for us to put an addition on our house and the roofer he sent over could barely speak english and when I asked him if he had a green card, he got real nervous. I told him not to work on the roof till I talked to his bossman. I told the contractor that I was gonna check the guy out and that if he wasn’t legal it was against him as well. the guy left and never came back. i called the county sheriff and was told they would forward the info to immigration, but I didn’t hold out any hope!! Article IV section 4 the feds are not doing there job.

  • Willie B

I agree with all but mostly this refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!

    Kick them all out!!!!

This is ALL ABOUT protecting Illegal Aliens in order to wear us down and make them Citizens to get them to the voting booth and then bring the Famlies ( chain migration ) for MILLIONS MORE new DemocRATS !!! Vote them all out or learn to speak spanish !

    • Mary

You’re right. It’s simple like that but don’t forget the Republicans protect the lllegals because they like cheap labor of course it’s not cheap at all for the country. Do you think any of thouse bad borned political parties think in us the people?.

    • BigBadJohn

The eight years of President George W. Bush’s administration saw a marked increase in illegal immigration and a drop in immigration enforcement throughout much of his tenure. For example, the number of illegal aliens arrested in workplace cases fell from nearly 3,000 in 1999 to 445 in 2003, with the number of criminal cases against employers during this period falling from 182 to four. Not surprisingly, by 2005, there were an estimated 10-20 million illegal aliens living in the United States. Even at the end of 2007 after the Bush administration’s enforcement crackdown had been underway; only 92 criminal arrests of employers had taken place, in an economy that, according to the Washington Post, includes 6 million businesses that employ more than 7 million illegal foreign workers.

    AMERICA THE CONQUERED

  • Garry Conley

I agree with a lot of the comments. I drive down the road in my city and it looks like all these people are waiting for a parade, on a good day there are 50 to 100 men standing on the roadside. Our grade school looks like it is in Mexico with all their kids. Crime has tripled according to our police on drugs and burglaries and gangs. These people are here illegally they are not undocumented citizens they are as much criminals as a bank robber. Remember our congress passed putting a fence up on our boarder, what’s happened to that, we have money to bail out car companies but no money to protect our boarders.

    • Nancy Carpenter

“borders” – we need to protect our borders. The “boarders” are the illegals — they are illegally boarding in our cities, towns, hospitals and schools.

  • BIG Daddy

Each individual state need to enact a similsr law.

This would make it safer for the citizen and also for ALL LEGAL foreign visitors who visit the USA world wide.

    ILLEGAL is still ILLEGAL.

What part of ILLEGAL do people not understand?

    End ALL Sanctuary Cities.

Remember illegals come in all Nationalities, Races, Genders, Ages, Religons and Colors.

I see nothing wrong with immigration as long as it is done LEGALLY.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Big Daddy,
As for getting rid of the sanctuary cities, I wish they would start with Painesville, Ohio!!!!! If our congressman Latourette doesn’t get something going about it soon I know a whole lot of people that are gonna vote against him next election!!! Ice busted a restaurant chain in the area and netted about 25, but that isn’t anywheres near enough!!! Hope he doesn’t mind the unemployment line too much!!!

What we are witnessing on TV with demonstraters taking out their frustration on police and smearing re-fried beans on the AZ capitol building, is ADULT TEMPER TANTRUMS. Parents who allow their kids to get away with breaking a household rule for a long period of time & then demand that the kids stop it & obey often see this same kind of behavior from them. If they are little children they might lay on the floor & kick & cry. If the are teenagers they may fight back at their parents with screams or sulks.

Our nation has allowed the Mexican population to get away with coming here illeagally for years & even awarded them with jobs, let alone emergency room care for even the most minor illness, as well as providing school room space & jail space for them as needed. We have allowed them to think it is OK to break the laws of immigration. Now they are throwing an ADULT TEMPER TANTRUM at having to begin living within the law.

Do we give in to them or do we stand firm & ask them to comply with the laws they were breaking all along while we turned our heads? Is it too late for legal Americans to demand our rights?

    • Ruby

      Hear, hear!!!

  • JB

Although one would have to agree with the concept that, no state shall make a law which countermands a federal law, it is only logical that, where and when the jurisdiction and authority of the federal government are not exercised to the extent necessary to ensure the security of its CITIZENS, the states should assume such jurisdiction and authority relative to the intent of the law. There is nothing unreasonable about that.

    • USN-Pops

It’s true that no state can crete laws that are in conflict with federal law. So read the Arizona law carefully. it does nothing more that allow enforcement of federal law. Any documented alien is required by federal law tocarry verification of their status.

Also nobody can be stopped for looking like a hispanic, muslim or irishman. They can only be asked their status if they are in violation of a legal ordinance. Then they will be turned over to ICE if they are not able to verify their status.

If Harry Reid, Pelosi, and the president have their way, the problem will be solved by giving amnesty to the illegals, giving them a 30 Million block of new voters. Plus fulfill the promise that no Illegal Aliens will get care under the massive healthcare bill. The protests now taking place all over the country are pushing for just that.

Here is an unpublished letter to a newspaper that says much:

      From:
      “David LaBonte”
My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to “print” it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined. Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange County Register:

      Dear Editor:
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren’t being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today’s American is not willing to accept
this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the
United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get
down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in
good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.
Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws
to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Lost of their children came of age when World War II broke out.
My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan . None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were
Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan . They were defending the United States of America as onepeople.
When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of
those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country’s flag and waving it to represent who they
were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew
what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same
rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their
mother country. I’m sorry, that’s not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on
Ellis Island in the early 1900′s deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty , it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on
the immigration bill. I wouldn’t start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

All the states that border Mexico should use natural deterrents to defend our boarders as follows:

The most abundant pain in the butt is prickly pear cactus-that’s right cactus-
    a-you can’t kill the stuff-ask any rancher
b-it grows every where and can be transplanted
    c-it is self perpetuating
d-animals can still maneuver through it and if they make trails we can
place cameras to monitor the trails, which works for wild life
    conservation and also immigration.
e-it will puncture/maim any thing that comes in contact with it
and if we plant a good 100 yards deep along the border areas
that we need protected, well, get the point!!!
f-in case of drought the ranchers can still burn the needles off the paddles for their cattle to eat on the outer edges.

It would also be a good hedge for the ranchers to have around their
houses to help protect themselves as well.

Any way like I said natural seems to be the best way.

    • http://victorbarney@embarqmail.com Victor L Barney

Munday, you either should be appointed as the new Homeland Security Chief, or just be a member of the New World Order classless society that we’re presently creating! I only wish that it was in your control and not our current governments control!

    • Hugh Jordan

      Wonderful Idea!

    • Palin12

Good idea! Maybe you could also plant some barrel cactus with 2 inch spines in with the other cacti. That would really give them something to remember! :-)

      • Airangel

So true…I used to live in Tucson and would walk in the desert to pick the berries off the prickly pear cacti when in bloom so my Aunt could make her famous prickly pear jam – very good stuff…but one time I did get caught up in a prickly pear ordeal with the needles all in me. I had to be hospitalized to get some of them out…it is a very good deterrent along with the barrel cactus too…and when in bloom, it’s kinda pretty border too :)

      • American Liberal

Lmaoooo… It figures you lunitics would like that idea

      • del

American Liberal for once you are right you scum sucking fool.We should be planting land mines and claymores down there instead.

    • Gloria

Munday, you are ingenious!! It would certainly stop them from having a painless trek onto the ranchers land and dragging off possessions that don’t belong to them. Way to go!!

  • Mike Austin,TX

The article mentions Texas but Gov Perry is so weak he will probably not sign any bill like this even if we overwhelmingly support it. He wants a virtual fence. We need to give him a virtual paycheck so he can see the difference. States need to rise up and take responsibility for their citizens. The Federal Gov’t cannot be the only ones tasked with enforcement. That makes no sense. Enforcement is the key. The laws are already in place except for a more severe employer punishment. I would like to see jail time and seizing of the business under the RICO act.

    • Rick, New Braunfels

You are right, Perry is an out and out politician, will not do what is right unless it will get him elected. What I think needs to be reported regarding illegal aliens is that over 40% actually come here legally and just never go home. That is why a fence is a waste of money, workplace enforcement is only thing I know that will work on a consistent basis. They are here for the jobs, period.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Mike,
I would support what you propose only if the business stays open! The American citizens that work there would be hurt the same as the law breakers and that would be wrong! Jail the owner, but don’t close it down!!!

  • Sade333

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yea Arizona! Thank you for taking the lead! Finally! Its good to see some of the other states finally following suit! Yea!!

    • sharon

YA I am with you 100%

  • steve

What is the argument here? every single alien “BROKE THE LAW!” Our Government, past & present, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 30 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means & in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution.

This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!

Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens WAKE UP PEOPLE! They walked, rode, swam and drove over here, they can do the same going home! taking thier anchor babies with them!

    • Robin from Arcadia, IN

      Steve..
Your post was excellent! I fully agree. I hope my state is considering passing similar legislation…

    • Hugh Jordan

I feel sorry for the people that cross the border looking for a better life as people. The sad fact is they came here uninvited and knew they were breaking the law. Let’s stop using euphemisms like “undocumented workers” and call them what they are: illegal residents. This is a serious issue of national security that is draining our resources, overcrowding our schools, and bankrupting our hospitals.

Most immigrants from other parts of the world blessed the opportunity to come here and made it their business to learn English and adopt our customs. Most Americans to be proud of their ethnic heritage, but they are AMERICANS first and are part of the fabric of our society. It is infuriating to see so many people demand that we accommodate THEIR customs. If they want to live like they did at home, stay home.

Every time I see government forms in two languages I realize how much money has been wasted to accommodate people who do not want to make the effort to learn our language.

Europe is having considerable trouble with people immigrating from Muslim countries who make unreasonable demands. It is starting here, too.

As a tv celebrity recently said, there are some things that are not negotiable about American culture: freedom of religion, separation of church and state, the right to bear arms, freedom of speech, non oppression of women or any other segment of our population.

If you want to live in a religious theocracy, like Saudi Arabia, where the government demands that you observe religious rituals – stay home. If you think girls should not be educated – stay home. If you want to kill your neighbor because he works on your sabbath – stay home. If you don’t want to learn our language- stay home. If you don’t want to abide by our laws and customs – stay home.

We welcome people who want to be positive contributors to society, follow legal immigration rules, and want to pursue the American dream. If you want to pursue some other country’s dream… stay or go there, but spare us your ignominious presence.

Good morning to everyone! First and foremost, have a great day!
This administration should step forward and get something done. Now, not later. I think they are dragging their feet because they want each individual state to pass their own legislation. If this happens, then the administration will say to the illegals “it is not our fault the states passed their own legislation.” Obama and crew probably think if the issue is handled in this manner, “they” will come out smelling like a rose. The reasoning behind this boils down to keeping votes. Maybe I am wrong, but …..”Oh, what a web they weave, when at first they attempt to deceive.”

    • Jim H.

Hi Claire, Good Morning to you too. I see it as the state have to take the bull by the horns and do it themselves if they want anything to be accomplished. I hope the rest of the people see it for what it is, Indecisiveness on the part of the federal government because they are to busy playing politics instead of doing their job. Then they will vilify the states for doing it. If they don’t like the direction the states are going in, maybe they should participate in the process.

    • http://MSN Penny Svir

Yes! Please e-mail your representatives in WA., your local newspaper,
your state representatives, your governor…..The press is obviously
biased and reports all the opposition and protests, but NOT information on all the people supporting Arizona’s stand. We Must be
      heard!!!

    • JeffH

Hi Claire. Returned to Fresno last nite after a wonderful Cinco de Mayo(Dos) party thrown by some close friends in Berkely. Had a great time.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Arizona Immigration law was overturned because of “racial profiling”, but then wouldn’t Affirmative Action have to be looked at in the same context?

      • Claire

JeffH—Don’t even think about it!! Racial profiling? Egads, I certainly hope not. Racial profiling would not be accurate–they are illegals! To me, racial profiling would not apply because they are NOT American. I cannot understand why this government does not realize this??!! Like I said, I bet the administration wants the states to handle the problem themselves. It certainly appears that way.
I am glad you had a good time. I have never been to California. Didn’t make it that far west while showing the dogs. Sounds like fun. I haven’t been anywhere for so long I wouldn’t know how to act!

      • JeffH

Claire, this administration is about as clueless as any I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. I know that a good part of it is by design but there is a complete lack of leadership…starting with the ACORN organizer at the top. There is definitely a trickle down affect happening. But at least the people are starting to get it, All of a sudden after Arizona passes a law, every Che Guerva wannabe comes out of the woodwork. People are still trying to get something free, and you just can’t reward the illegal criminals.

      • Kelly

        Hey Jeff!
This whole note is a bit for you & rest on immigration. Good to talk.

Hope no one wants to be like Che G. He murdered a lot of innocent people in Cuba. His true history shows he was not a hero & a lot of Cubans see it very distasteful for people to wear shirts with his image.

Go Arizona, majority of Americans supports you.
There are alot of nationalities that come here illegally (not just hispanic). Just so everyone knows………I do my own dishes, house cleaning & yard work. I don’t ask anyone to raise my kids but I have to raise yours (illegal immigrants)thru my state & federal taxes.
Plus..resent people calling natural born Americans lazy. Lazy can come from anyone, any natioanlity.

        We have laws.
You are disrespecting the immigrants that come here the legal way & that pay their state & federal taxes. The illegal immigrants are free loading off of them & natural born citizens.

There are jobs natural born & legal immigrants want but are filled with illegals. If you are legal then your boss can not take advantage of you & your correct pay. You don’t have to slip into this country thru the darkness of the night, run past border patrol or be locked in back of a no air..no AC truck…..where you take the risk of the guy walking off with your money & leaving you lock in with no escape.

The police need out support to have the extra tools to keep us all safe.
As we all know the government is not the best source…the states should have main control of their borders (& health care).

        Thanks.

    • donald

in the mean while , since the world is watching every move made on this issue …. the illegal immigrants are rushing the borders as we debate the issues as to who is responsible for securing our borders and why they aren’t doing their jobs
