Virginia Tech, Columbine Families Vow Action On Gun Show Loophole

Virginia Tech, Columbine families vow action on gun show loopholeTaking advantage of the recent anniversaries of some of the deadliest shootings on United States school campuses, gun rights opponents have praised lawmakers who are working to close the gun show loophole, and have appealed to others to take up the cause.

In Virginia, the families of those killed or wounded and the survivors of the shooting have expressed their gratitude to U.S. Representatives Gerald Connolly (D-Va.), Jim Moran (D-Va.) and Bobby Scott (D-Va.) for co-sponsoring H.R. 2324. The bill was introduced by Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) and Representative Mike Castle (R-Del.) and would require background checks on all firearm purchasers at gun shows.

"Even though [the previous lack of background check requirement] has been fixed at the state level in Virginia, a future shooter would still be able to walk into a gun show in more than 30 states and purchase a firearm(s) from an unlicensed seller without undergoing any background check whatsoever," the group complained in a statement issued by the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

Meanwhile, on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre, the father of one of the victims has asked why it has taken federal lawmakers more than a decade to require background checks at gun shows. Colorado voted overwhelmingly to close this loophole in 2000.

"This loophole in federal law needs to be closed by Congress, so that Colorado’s background check law becomes the law of the land," Tom Mauser said.

Mauser is launching a statewide radio advertising campaign this week, which asks voters to contact Senator Mark Udall (D-Colo.) to urge him to vote to eliminate the provision.ADNFCR-1961-ID-19731749-ADNFCR

    I am a retired Police Officer. Did you know that it is unconstitutional for a Police Officer to Protect and Serve? Its written on most of the Police Cars but it doesn’t mean a thing. A Police Officer cannot protect anyone. A Police Officer Must wait until a crime has been committed. He cannot take an action before a crime is committed. His presence may stop a crime just by his being there but that is all. A Police Officer doesn’t serve anyone. He is not a waiter. He serves by doing his job. If you look up the rules you will find that You are responsible for your Own Protection. And the best way to do that is to own a firearm, and learn how to use it and when to use it. A person can not just pull out a gun and open up. There must be a fear for life. Yours or someone Else’s. Owning a firearm is a grave responsibility and should be taken to heart. Go to a professional firearm’s instructor and Learn. Join the NRA.
    Just remember You are responsible for your own safety, not the Police.

      Bravo Phil! Too many people don’t understand the responsibility that goes with gun ownership. Having been a G.I. in Viet Nam and law enforcement including federal before becoming a teacher I couldn’t agree with you more. The people who are pushing for these regulations are the very same who are just sure that when their life or the lives of their loved ones are threatened, the call to 911 for help that is only 45 minutes away will save them. Pity, isn’t it!
      So many people simply don’t understand!

    Wm.Nealey; Teachers are in school to teach and have enough on their plates and shouldn’t have to look over their shoulder and worry about guns. Are you going to be responsible if that teachers gun get’s stolen from his or her’s desk drawer? What if he has to break up a fight and it goes off and kills an innocent? Too many what if’s in a school setting. I doubt if your trained to be a pilot,you know, Just in case your needed on a flight to save lives. Are you one of those NO TAX people who are willing to pay for the guns,training,and insurance for these teachers?

      Voting out all incumbents is time consuming, counter productive, and wasteful. There are some good pro 2nd amendment, pro Constitution, pro freedom reps and senators in congress. Why vote them out and chance getting someone worse. Vote out the liberal socialists and keep the Americans in there, so we can take back control. Same goes for term limits.

    Jerry H. So you want to arrest and prosecute parents of children who commit crimes? Peer pressure and many other reasons can turn a “good” child into a bully,thief,or even murder. Not everyone lives in your perfect world but I’m glad your kids turned out okay.

    this article is BULL-s**t ever since the Brady act was passed all gun buyers have to go thru a background check to buy a gun, unless they already have a gun permit, in that case they already went thru extensive back ground check at the local & federal level, This is just another attempt to ban guns completely!!! The 2nd amendment was wrote to protect you from your goverment, hunting & self protection is a side benefit of the sencond ammendment. Note with the miltarizaation of all of local police forces, which i believe to be unconstituttional, 99% of the gun owners dont have the protection to stop them if they want to go door to door & take our weapons, this miltarization was done on purpose because of all the guns that are in the USA, so the local forces will always have the upper hand!!! Why our goverment is scared of gun owners really baffels me??? I dont believe that violence is the answer or ever will be the answer!!!! The power of education, & the power of the VOTE, is what our forefathers gave us to deal with the imcompetence that has been going on the last 100 years, Communism from Europe has been slowly creeping up on us for along time! With the passage of the Federal Reserve act of 1913 & the passage of the income tax, Europe won the war!!!Now that the people have awake to figure out what has happened, we need to elect officals who respect the Constitution & reverse what has happened before we become SERFS that are no more than cannon fodder for there Kings & Queens.     The “gun control” crowd start their annual cry “Stamp out Guns” every anniversary of a particular heinous crime. The fact is it is brought about and led by the Rep.McCarthy whose husband was killed and son was injured by a nut case on the LIRR. If any of the passengers were also armed they could have stopped the killing. The same is true in most cases. Sara Brady’s husband was also wounded as was President Regan. The bottom line is we are all responsible for our own safety. The goverment has put up road blocks all along to people owning firearms. The goverment says “call 911″. The truth is the police are not there in time to stop tragic shootings. They usually arrive after the fact and take reports. You will notice that any perpetrator that is caught and tried is considered “insane” and gets to live free in jail or hospital on the taxpayers money. No one is sentenced to death for their crimes. Hinkley will be out someday soon. Colon Ferguson may never get out but he still gets 3 hots and a cot and movies and visits and recreation on the N.Y.State taxpayer. If the school shooters didn’t kill themselves they would still be alive. The dead would still be dead because they could not defend themselves. Thanks to the government and thanks to the schools for barring weapons on campus. When the majority of American people stop acting like sheep and grow a spine and demand their rights to defend themselves the killing will keep occuring. A Professor whose name escapes me once said ” An Armed Society is a Polite Society” !! Now thats a true statement……

    The very notion that there is such a thing as a Gun Show loop-hole is so pointless and stupid that no intelligent person should accept the notion.
    Where ever an individual obtains a gun tells us where they obtained the gun whether they purchased the gun from a store; from a gun show; borrowed the gun; stoled the gun; the gun fell from the sky and hit them in the head; or from a license dealer or from an un-license dealer.
    The reason someone would commit a crime has nothing to do with the fact they have access to or possession of a gun or how they purchased or obtained the gun; People commit crimes because that is the course of action that they decided to take.
    The evil; the murder; and violence is in the soul of man; not the instrument they have chosen to use to commit a crime. God of his own will gave us a free will; and gave us the freedom to do good or to do evil. We have the responsibility to do what is good. Therefore, people must use dicipline and self control to prevent themselves from committing a crime or anything foolish.

    Finally, one can write as many Gun Control laws until hell freezes over and there will be someone who just might committ a crime of their own free will, not because they have access to or possession of a gun.

If you read what the founders said you will see that the reason they intended that we never be disarmed is so that we can always protect ourselves from CORRUPT TYRANNICAL ILL-MOTIVATED GOVERNMENT.     It’s not the Guns committing the crime! It’s the individuals themselves and if they didn’t have a gun, they would use a knife, a bomb, a baseball bat, etc…it’s the character and the anger/rage within a person lashing out. A gun is just a means to carry that anger or frustration out. Control the behavior and you’ll control the crime. Columbine, Virginia Tech, the Ft. Hood and most all other school and group shootings are directly related to psychotic behavior and psych drugs given to these kids. We have become a “lazy” society of popping pills rather than getting to the root cause of issues and changing the behavior.

      My daughter is about to graduate from a Christian School. They are educated in the three R’s as well as Bible and “How I Act”. Each of those letters covers a particular area of attitude and behavior. Starting with Kindergarten, children were not to talk back, pout, throw a tantrum, sass, or show disrespect to teachers, the principal, and enough demerits resulted in a swat from the principal and/or a letter home. Most children entered first and second grade as socialized, well mannered, young students having learned their “A,B,C’s” with a Bible memory verse for each letter to be recited without error from beginning to end. In the thirty some years this recitation has been required, only one student failed. Needless to say, the vast majority graduate going on to Christian College, the military including the Marines, etc. Critical is teaching each child to “control themselves, to rule their own person” – something even Alexander, the Great couldn’t do. When we can do this, the sky’s the limit.

        Oh yeah, back on post – one day a year we have an Saturday when whoever wants to can get together to “shoot guns”. I’ve never been there but have heard of some pretty serious fire-power being “exercised”. We do have guys and some girls take time out for hunting season whether muzzle loader or regular rifle/shotgun or bow. I had a little 22 rifle, learned to fire a side arm as Corpsman with the Marines in Vietnam and agree with the majority on this site – it’s the “person behind the weapon” that commits the crime be it a gun or a rock.

        I got the fever now!! I looked at another 9mm today. Made in Fla. I,ve never heard of the brand and right now can’t remember what it is, but the guy said I can try it on the range if I want. 350.00 with two clips out the door! Nice size for CC if I want to get my permit which I probably will. White dot sights. If it shoots well, I will probably have another gun next week!!! I like the 9mm and it doesn’t seem to bother my arthritic wrists either. since I got the hi-point, I’ve put about 100 rounds through it. I was a little rusty at first but it’s coming back quite well! Gets a little expensive though!!LOL!

    Columbine was a CIA op and there were other shooters and if you would take the time to read the transcripts from the investigation, you will see for yourself that you have been lied to again. There were grown men with guns in Columbine and they were not law enforcement!

    We have guns to protect ourselves from the government. When you discover that Oklahoma City, Columbine, Waco, Jonestown, and the Wall Street and 911 explosions, the shoe and underwear bombers, WERE ALL CIA GOVERNMENT PSY OPS, you will know why we carry concealed weapons.

    Most of the responders have some good points. I, like many others saw the one sided story done by ABC news where they gave a kid $5K and he came back with arms full of guns. Is is possible He bought them from private individuals without a backgound check. Yes, as long as he was a resident of the State, perfectly legal. What was left out of the story, and subsequently out of this article, is the hundreds of transaction conduted by licensed gun dealers at the guns shows, where the forms are filled out, the call in is made, and the person is approved or disapproved, based on the backgroung check. Anyone seeing that ABC documentary News report( I use the term loosely, since it was pure propiganda)or reading this article would think that all of the guns sold at gunshows are done without a background check. Nothing could be further from the truth. Another example of one sided liberal meadia pushing their agenda. Guns don’t kill, Nut jobs do!

    I have in two different times in the past been the holder of a Federal Firearms License. I’d really like to know what loophole thes people are talking about! The laws are very specific and since people like the “Brady Bunch” the laws and rules have become so oppressive that many have given up their FFL’s…myself included. Of course the other major problem was being a gun dealer in The People’s Republic of Commiefornia which is the way the entire country will go now that we have the Great Socialist in power! This is just another step towards totalitarin government. There is a reason his middle name is Hussein!

    Self defense is a fundamental, unalienable right. It is commanded of us by God. Neither the Feds nor the states have the right to take away or restrict our means of defense. It has been proven over and over again that allowing the citizenry to keep and bear arms reduces crime and taking away that right only hurts the weakest among us who are incapable of defending themselves otherwise. Anyone who uses ANY weapon to take a human life excepting justified self defense should pay a very severe price both for the damage to the family and for the damage to the community and nation. The only other exceptions should be young children and the mentally incompetent under the supervision and PROTECTION of authorities.

    There is no “Gun Show Loop Hole”. Any transaction by a person who is not a licensed gun dealer is a private transaction between two private individuals. All current Federal and State Gun Laws should be abolished. The 2nd amendment was written to arm the private citizen so that no unjust government would be free to take his liberty and freedom from him. The Obama Government is now attempting to take these “God Given Rights” from us with every new legislation which is passed. Vote these people out of office as soon as it is legally possible.

    Closing the gun show loophole has an unintended consequence. A citizen wishing to sell an older firearm will be forced to obtain a criminal background report on a prospective buyer. The additional cost, effort and time will cause most to forego the falderal, keep the used gun and buy a new one. Such a law will greatly reduce used gun availability, steering a buyer to a new gun instead. It’s another politically inspired bonanza for gun manufacturers. More guns all ’round! Additionally, because only a tiny fraction of privately sold guns are used in crimes, such a law won’t make us significantly safer. Closing the gun show loophole is another expensive violation of the 2nd Amendment that won’t accomplish much.

See how absurd your position is. You are clearly not engaging your brain before engaging your mouth. Thousands of Americans die at the hands of Doctors and other medical staff every year.It is shocking to see how many die of infections alone. Go hassle them and try to make a difference.Firearm related deaths equal a miniscule fraction of these “accidental” deaths.Do not fear guns or gun owners, fear criminals. There is documention galore that proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that legal and responsible gun ownership reduces violent crime. Just open your eyes and your minds and you will see!

    I don’t recall any of the firearms used in Columbine or Virginia Tech as being bought at a gun show. The guns at Virginia Tech were purchased legally at a gun shop. Why is it that Democrates and gun right opponents can’t be honest??

      The Columbine guns were purchansed at a gunshow, but it was a straw purchase by a qualifies person. Background check or no background check she was clean. You cannot stop straw sales.

    What the gun-show-loophole crowd doen’t want you to know is there is no way to tell the difference between a gun sales in the parking lot of a gun show and you giving a gun to your son or daughter or selling a gun you no longer want or need to a friend or neighbor.

    The only way the mythical gun-show-loophole can be closed is to register every single firearm in America. In every first world nation that has required registration of firearms, it has led to the confiscation of those same weapons.

    And guess what? It still will not solve the problem percieved by the anti-gun crowd. Since criminals by definition do not abide by the law, taking guns from legal, honest people only increase the population of victims. Maybe that is their real agenda. If the number of potential victims goes up, their odds of being a victim go down in inverse porportion.

      If we have the right to own and sell property privately, what “loophole” are they talking about?

    Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them..

    Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

    Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

    You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The president does.

    You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

    You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

    You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

    You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

    One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

    I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

    I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

    Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

    What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits….. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

    The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

    It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

    If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

    If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red ..

    If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it’s because they want them in IRAQ

    If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

    There are no insoluble government problems.

    Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

    Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

    They, and they alone, have the power..

    They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

    Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees…

    We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Good idea….some of these gun shows will sell weapons to any ” Timothy McVeigh” wanna be that has cash….if a bar or bartender sells booze to a drunk then the bartender or bar could be held responsible if the drunk harms someone …. Should be the same with weapons ….if a person buys a weapon without a background check that gun seller should be held responsible… If the buyer has something in his background that would have shown up in a background check…

        God. You are a fool. In grade school, I had a teacher who looked like Wally Cox (who played “Mr. Peepers” on TV). One day, while lining up after recess, one of us noticed a bulge in his right hand jacket pocket (remember when male teachers routinely wore jackets and female teachers wore dresses?) and asked him what it was. He pulled out his snub nosed colt Detective Special in .38 S&W Special Caliber and showed it to us. We were amazed, curious and pleased, all at the same time. funny thing about it was, nobody felt intimidated, frightened or in danger because of that. In fact, we all felt safer. Nobody called the authorities, the school nor took their children out of school because of it. He suffered no negative consequences whatsoever. Neither did we. Of course, this was in the late 40′s, so I guess we’re much more violent as a species now than we used to be shortly after WW II.

        My high school chemistry teacher (who also taught advanced mathamatics courses) was a gunsmith and collector. He gave presentations at assembly in the gym demonstrating safe gun handeling, a little history (he had some historicaly significant guns) and shooting demonstrations using specially loaded low power ammunition. While to my knowledge he was never witnessed carring a gun for protection It would not supprise me if he had.

        One other tidbit about him, he said in geometry class “I think the school rule against carrying a pocket knife (as he cleaned his fingernail with one) is stupid for you never know when you might need to cut someone”.

      Look up how many guns that are purchased in gun shows are used in violent attacks or robberies in the U.S. Less than one percent. Also, most people who perform violent acts with a gun are repeat offenders(felons),we already have umteen laws saying they can’t have them, and yet they get them anyway, most of which aren’t even legal to sell in the U.S. (that includes your gun shows). They get them from Mexico or are trafficked up here on the black market. Also, I tried something really interesting the other day, I left my ruger revolver on my table and invited my neighbors over for brunch. We sat there for three hours talking and that gun, which was fully loaded, never killed anyone! I know this may come as a shock to a lot of people in the world today, but guns don’t kill people, people kill people, they just happen to use a gun, or a knife, or a club, or a sharp stick, or in the case of timmy and his boy nichols, fertilizer and diesel fuel. Hell, I bet given the right motivation, a person could kill another person with a hot horse shoe! And before anyone out there decides to say more gun laws will save kids from accidental shootings, before we go that way, we really need more laws against swimming pools, because for every kid that gets injured with a gun, there are more than thirty that drown in swimming pools every year. Why aren’t people trying to restrict swimming? Do something about that and save thirty times the number of people in the U.S every year than by chasing gun owners and hounding them. GUN LAWS DON’T WORK. Instead, get tougher on the criminals that kill, rape, or harm in any way. The death penalty doesn’t work simply because it isn’t used enough. You have more chance of dieing in a drive by shooting in L.A. than of dieing on death row. In the last ten years, less than 400 people have died that were on death row. I have a better chance of winning the Powerball than dieing on deathrow, that is if I was on deathrow. So think, if I want to kill or terrorize someone, and I don’t have a gun, what can I use? Then look around your house, and I’ll bet you will find at least 10 if not 1000 things that you could use that are just as effective. So, would you rather regulate everything in your house to the government, or should we just start eliminating individuals that cannot or will not live within what society has deemed as acceptable behavior toward each other. To me its a no-brainer. And by the way, Big Gov doesn’t want my gun so YOU can feel safer, they want my gun so THEY can feel safer, safer to do to me and my country and my neighbors whatever they want with impunity, without retaliation. Why do you think our forefathers made that #1 on their list? because it sounded good? NO!!!!! It was so, if all else fails and we have to resort to defending ourselves against our own government(God willing that will never, never happen)to throw off that cloak of tyranny, as they put it. Read COMMON SENSE by Mr. Paine, (one of the signers of our glorious Constitution) and maybe you can get your mind right.

        Whle we’re talking about guns killing people, let’s talk about a rod, switch, belt, etc. abusing children. I was one of six who had the good fortune to be raised by parents who “applied the board of education to the seat of knowledge”. It didn’t take very many times to know that I was to do as I was told, not to disobey, and further to learn not only respect for authority but the value of good, hard, honest work. Applied judiciously and lovingly in a very strategic spot at an early age (disobedience isn’t cute when it’s willful) children at a surprisingly early age can learn that when Mom and Dad say “No!”, they mean it. Then teachers, principals, the community, police and other authorities find readily tractable, productive, hard-working citizens who don’t need “baby jail”, detention homes, juvenile court, on to lethal injection, the electric chair, death-row, etc. Consider that this is really “child abuse”, forcing a child to “raise himself by trial and error”, at the whim of authorities long after he should be able to control himself.

      there is this curious aspect shared by gun banners: their “guilty until proven innocent” philosophy which spills over into their “sensible” gun laws. As a result, you get “leaders” like Governor Fenty of Washington, D.C., with their personal, armed police escorts, promoting gun bans on rhetoric alone:

      Not only that, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that for the last 4 years of reporting data (2003-2006) D.C. averaged a non-firearms homicide rate higher than the total homicide rate for entire country.

      Keep in mind that, when derogation and name-calling is the only recourse available, anti-self-defense proponents have just publicly admitted defeat. As Cam Edwards, host of NRA News, noted recently, what makes them act this way is the fact that the “gun lobby” is us, the American People. This reality terrifies them, and we may be on the edge of a sea-change in American history, so take heart and work harder than ever for Liberty.

      A private individual cannot call up the FBI and get a background check done only a licensed firearm dealer or police department can do that. Any law to require private sales to do a background check is a law to prevent the private transfer of any firearm even buying your son, daughter, wife, or husband a firearm for their birthday or

    I was informed many years ago that there are so many weapons in the US that no invading army or domestic army could ever have enough time or manpower to find and confiscate them.
    While this may sound impossible, it is a blessing in disguise. If Americans lose the right to bear arms, this will be much more than a thorn in the
    side of a dictatorial government.
    How a government wants to be seen by its people is a decision that must be made by that government. No individual or group can be trusted if it looks for reasons to try to deny Americans the right to bear arms. Ergo, the rights of the people and the will of the people to be free trump the whims of any government, especially if that government adopts a very old form of insanity known as ‘the ends justify the means.’

      just out of curiosity, why is it so important to own a weapon? What compells someone to own one? Protection? maybe if you live in an extremely bad area…but come on? Innocents are gunned down every few days in our country,the most violent in the 1st world…sometimes a few people slaughtered,sometimes a dozen or more slaughtered.
        It’s truly insane that we allow unlimited gun purchases to absolutely anyone at a freaking gun ‘show’.

        Here in Ohio, we can go into a gunshop and buy a pistol and after about 30 minutes, we can walk out with a new gun. If you think a hand gun can do a lot of damage, you should see thr destruction of a 16 guage pump sawed off at the end of the slide can do. It can be carried under an overcoat on a string and just swung up to use. Very little aiming needed, just point and pull the trigger and pump, and repeat!!

        A knife or club or even hands can kill someone…but those weapons can’t kill 30 some kids in a matter of minutes like a semi automatic gun w/ a large clip can. Modern guns make mass killing so easy and fast that their is absolutely NO comparison w/ any other readily available ‘weapon’. The NRA and the people who support it who have successfully fought reasonable controls and restrictions on guns all have the blood of our children and other victims of mass killings on their hands….what would Jesus say?         w/ a totally closed mind…Chicago may have tough gun laws but most of the country doesn’t. We are saturated w/ guns and one or a few cities surrounded by states where guns flow freely like toxic waste can’t possibly keep guns out. You have to look at countries that have a uniform policy on guns to see what the effect is. So any rational looks at the stats on gun violence by country and sees that we lead the ‘civilized’ world in murder by a factor of 3 or 4 or more. Then a rational and slightly scientific person w/ an open mind would wonder why that’s the case when the NRA led sheep keep repeating that more guns make us safer. Any questions, partisan gun nut?

        Ask that question to the elderly person or single mom who stops an intruder by using a firearm, thus preventing a robbery, a beating, a rape, and possibly a murder. It happens with regularity in America, several times a day.

        It’s important to own a weapon to counter the force of thugs – who will always be armed if possible, regardless of the law. Anyone who fails to understand this logic is considered unteachable.

        All gun control activists want is to make sure that guns can’t be freely bought by people who intend to do harm or are criminal or psychologically unstable. Why is requiring a background check the same as disarming the public for tyranny? If less criminals had guns we wouldn’t need them for protection. Saying that the answer is just to arm everybody so that we can all be safer seems kind of silly when you really look at it doesn’t it? Did that work in the wild west? That just breaks things down to whoever has the most guns seizes control. Kind of like the warlords in Afghanistan? There are no gun laws there. How’s that working out for them?

He goes to the street corner in any big city and buys one from the local small time gun runner. These guns are brought into the states illegally or are stolen from shops and people, then sold on the illegal market!

We’re returning to the days of the Wild West w/ shootouts in the street or bar and cafe. Yet even in the old west there were towns that banned guns for the general safety of citizens.
        Like Dave says,look at places like Afghanistan,Somalia, Sudan and others w/ no gun laws for a lesson in what happens.
        The cliche that an armed public will stop criminals is nothing but a big lie and myth fabricated by the gun lobby for financial gain…business. W/ a society saturated w/ guns and little control of them, crooks will always have bigger guns and more of them and be more willing to use one, compared to the average person who actually doesn’t want to kill someone and will usually think a bit before shooting. The other part of the myth says that crooks will think twice before assaulting someone if they know that some are armed…Ridiculous! That supposes that common thugs who are willing to kill for $50 and some who are high on meth actually do much ‘thinking’ before acting. That’s a preposterous myth.

        I ask again…why haven’t all the legal guns in our country made us one of the safest in the world? How long should we run this little experiment or have to wait before the NRA theory of guns and safety
        proves true?? All the while watching as high school and even elementary age kids kill ea other or their parents or strangers…

        Because It’s Cool, Family Legacy (Because my Parents Owned Guns), Just For Hunting, Target Shooting Only, For Social Reasons, For Self Defense, Because the Founding Fathers Wanted me to, As an Investment, Historical Reasons, Interest in The Mechanics of Firearms or My Own Reasons.

        For me, my reasons include most of those outlined above… though I’m unlikely to buy a gun simply to set it aside and not use it. I own and use guns for hunting, target shooting, clay busting, and self defense, as well as just plain exercising my right to protect myself against any and all oppressors. And although I know there are people in the world who hate me for owning guns, I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

        Let your reasons be your own… we Americans are still free to do as we choose, to some extent. Don’t let politicians, TV news anchors, me, or anyone else do your thinking for you.

        I highly recommend gun ownership, but you get to make your own choice. Just don’t tread on me if you don’t agree… some serpents still have fangs.

        Ron, Please look up the histories of say just NAZI Germany and, even earlier, Communist Russia and her fledgling Soviet Union, Castro’s Cuba, or the People’s Republic of China for just a few examples that come immediately to mind. Look up the violent crime statistics in just England and Australia alone, while comparing say 10 years before and 10 years after their abolition of almost all privately owned firearms. then get back to me. You have every God given right to choose to wait for the Gendarmes to arrive to save you and your family’s lives, after you finally get through to 911. You do not, however, have the right to choose that almost certain death for me and mine.

        Nobody needs a weapon until they actually need it. It’s like a tool that you wish you had when the need arises. If you don’t wish to own a gun, then don’t. However, this places you into the “unarmed potential victim” catagory. You are your first line of defense, NOT the Police. The Police are always at the scene of a crime AFTER it happens to investigate and take the report.

        The Supreme Court had previously ruled that “The Police have no legal responsibility to protect you, but only to bring criminals to Justice.” As the L.A. riots, and the New Orleans events have proven, any major event that keeps the police busy allow criminals to do whatever they want to do with you. If you have something they want, and you cannot prevent them from doing so, what are you going to do? In the L.A. riots, the only potential victims who weren’t victimized where the citizens who had guns to warn-off the criminals. The criminals aren’t stupid. They prey on the easy targets. If you wish to be an easy target, then be my guest.

        Especially for a woman home alone while someone is trying to break into your home, a gun for protection is a plus. The phone lines are usually cut by the criminals first. Go outside to see how easy it is to cut your phone line? However, if your phone is functioning, or if you have a cell phone, do you want to be on the phone with the Police (if the line isn’t busy)and have a gun in the other hand if needed, or do you just want to be unarmed and praying that the Police arrive before the criminal gets to you? If you are armed, please don’t let the dispatcher talk you into putting the gun away. There was one well known murder victim who took the dispatcher’s advice and got stabbed to death before the Police arrived! A dispatcher only knows about dispatching, and nothing more!

        Now you’re probably thinking that I’m some kind of gun nut, right? I’m a retired Deputy Sheriff.

        Well Ron you would have to to your “psych profile” WITH ALL THE FOUNDING FATHERS. Then you would have to do a “psych profile” ON 150 MILLION CITIZENS then you would have to look at 5,000 YEARS OF RECORED HISTORY then you would HAVE TO LOOK AT THE CONSTITUTION that Gives us this RIGHT FROM GOD.

        It is to protect us from bad people and BAD GOVERNMETNS wake up and GROW UP for real.

        Ron I don’t know where you live but I have almost always cept for 13 yrs in Phoenix lived in rural America. AS stated by one of the Japanese Admirals the main reason there was no major invasion after Pearl was because every household had guns. Now living in rural areas a gun does help supply meat for the table and also protects you from criminals. Neither the police nor a neighbor can arv. fast enough to help.Even in the middle of Phoenix my son had to get arm himself when a you rushed in the front door threatening to beat him. I wasn’t home fortunatly for him. All rights are abused by some,but everyone has them. Some like Fords others Chevy. To each his own.
