Rocked By Scandals, Republicans Fall Behind Democrats In Fundraising Efforts

April 13, 2010 by

Rocked by scandals, Republicans fall behind Democrats in fundraising efforts Even though the Republican Party raised more money than the Democrats in February, the pattern seemed to reverse in March, leading some to wonder if this situation had anything to do with the recent scandals that rocked the GOP.

As the primary election season gets under way, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) raised at least $13 million last month, while the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) total was $11.4 million, according to media reports.

The figures were revealed at a time the Republican leadership was trying to recover from allegations that RNC Chairman Michael Steele spent thousands of dollars on private jets and that a mid-level RNC official charged nearly $2,000 at a lesbian strip club in California.

Still, the chairman chose to look on the bright side, noting the March haul was among the best on record for the GOP, and was "a testament of America’s opposition to the Democrats’ government-run healthcare legislation."

Meanwhile, Democratic leaders have used the March numbers to argue that supporters of the reform were more generous than its opponents, according to Market Watch.

By their posts and replies here, I see that the Liberals and Progressives are not in high school. They are old enough to be so biased they are uneducable.

no chance jeff unless we get a new conservative congress and i doubt we can do that. we have too many rino’s embedded in the house and the rnc is doing nothing except causing itself problems. the tea party is our only hope of generating enough conservative americans to run and as you can see they have a high hurdle with the media, the dnc and rnc doing all they can to crush this movement.
like your letter, however, my congressman is very conservative and he is voicing exactly what you say in your letter, any democrat rep such as pew’losi wouldn’t take a phone call or email so there’s no evidence she would bother to read a letter.

  • JeffH

To anyone that might be interested. I have sent a letter to my representatives through Downsize DC and I encourage those that agree with a repeal of the Health Care Bill to do the same. Downsize DC provides that avenue:
    https://secure.downsizedc.org/etp/campaigns/114

It reads in my own words:

True healthcare reform requires less government involvement, not more.

I am outraged at Congress and this administration for turning their backs on the American people with this outrageous Health Care Bill that presents everything but REFORM. Congress should and needs to repeal this bill. Each and every proponent of this bill will be held responsible for their actions. Each and every elected representative will be deeply scrutinized and held accountable for for their role in the destruction of what should be a bipartisan, constitutional democratic republic.
Do not expect a vote from myself or the majority of Americans for your re-election if you have ignored your constituents and the oath you have taken to uphold and protect the Constitution and the people of the United States of America.

Raggs… If liberals lose ground in the Mid terms then so be it… I support democracy….and I don’t mind paying taxes to live on the best country on the planet…. I want safe roads, a strong fire dept, police force, military ( infrastructure)…so I don’t mind paying taxes to have those things…. You rightys don’t care about silly things like I listed…

    • http://yahoo ellodeb

So the roads, the police, ect.ect. ect. are so important that the feds have to do it? No thanks, have you been to the Social Security office lately? How about the USPS and getting paid with money orders? Once employed by the feds you can’t get rid of them or get them to do the right thing, let alone work for the people who are paying their outrageous wages and benefits. You liberals are the same as any Republican or Democrat as far as party lines go the corruption is to the core. Let’s go for content of character.

    • Raggs

Liberal….You are sadly mistaken if you think I do not care about this country or the citizens that call it home…. The lose of jobs this year have hit some very close friends of mine not only that but I have a heavy heart for all of those that have lost thier jobs…

The path that the democrats are taking this country into is nothing less than destructive and nonproductive… The government IS the problem not the solution… I feel that by design obama wants this country to colapse so that he can join this country in a global governance ran by no other than obama himself… Democrats are blindeyed puppets serving thier master and not the people of this nation.

      • Norm

        Raggs
Your forgetting who was president for nearly 2 sad terms when the bottom fell out.

      • denniso

Raggs…you and others who spout your theory of Obama wanting to destroy the country so he can then be dictator of a one world gov’t are nothing short of deluded or insane. You should know by now that the crash began in Bush’s term after 7 yrs of his being in control and that he started the bailouts that Obama continued. So are you saying that Bush also wanted to dictate over a one world gov’t??
Come on guy,you can surely think better than that…

  • Independent

FlaJim really nailed the problem for the Republican Party. Just like him, I’m tired of seeing my contributions go to support people who turn on us and vote with the Democrats, so from now on, I’m not contributing to the Party. I’m giving to the Conservative candidate. No more Establishment RINO’s. Backing John McCain against Obama was the last straw. He has been a RINO all along. I voted for him as the lesser of two evils.

  • Norm

Simply stated: why give money to losers. The republicans are divided, confused, and if they continue the radical right path, they will ultimately lose.

    • Raggs

Not going to happen…. This kind of downplaying the tea parties and the GOP is exactly what the obama worshipping leftist want people to believe, but sence it is all nonsence and lies the dumbocraps are sitting in thier own pile of crap.

      • s c

Raggs, remember what Mark Twain said about people who rely on newspapers for their information. He said, “If you don’t read a newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you do read a newspaper, you’re misinformed.” That, in a nutshell, is the way to look at Normy.
I wonder what Twain would have said about kool-aid drinkers like Normy and the usual ultraliberal progressives who send in feedback?

  • Raggs

So…. Why are you liberals worried about this November anyway?
I have been reading the dumbocraps are going to count the dead, illegals and pets / livestock as votes…

    • Norm

      Raggs
As I’ve previously stated, 2010 will bring gains to Republicans. However, they will not gain majorities in the Senate or the House. Current predictions are 6-7 seats in the Senate, 20-30 in the House.
If they don’t get it together by 2012, Obama’s in.

  • chuck b

are you aware, americanliberal is nothing but some high school srudent agitating, can’t you tell by his juvenile thought process.

    • s c

Between AmLib and Normy, I wouldn’t give either of them the benefit of the doubt, chuck b. They haven’t made it past junior high – yet. At some point, their revised history books will put them in their place, and their unnatural affection for King Obummer will force them into rehabs (assuming that Obummer’s healthcare scam will have room for them, and America will have enough trained professionals to treat them).

      • Ellen

Thank-you, I am new on this site and I wonder what sort of low IQ but now I understand. Grade School amlib & normys are trying to be big fellows.

        JeffH,
you mean his name isn’t dennisso??? I’ll just be darned!!!

  • American Liberal

Citizen… It’s proof big business can’t be trusted… Regulation is a must.. The Bush tax cuts and deregulation took our economy down… Not mention cutting taxes to the rich in time of war… Bushs personal war aginst Iraq was another reason… You think Ronald Reagan defeated the Soviet Union?.. It was Afghanistan…

    • Allan

Try sub-prime mortgages, mostly driven by Dems, and the toxic assets that created in the global investment community. If you want to believe it was Bush tax cuts, that’s your prerogative.

      • BigBadJohn

Do some research on Bush’s “ownership society” program, he twisted arms to make it work which meant giving out shaky loans. You never saw a zero down mortgage before George Bush……

Quote from Bush: In America’s ideal of freedom, citizens find the dignity and security of economic independence… To give every American a stake in the promise and future of our country, we will… build an ownership society. We will widen the ownership of homes…..

  • American Liberal

American citizen… Did those tax cuts to the rich work?……

    • American Citizen

Again, it’s the spending. Bush’s tax cuts were not only for the rich, they went across the board. When Obama lets them expire, everyones’ tax rates are going to go up. The rich are hurting right now just as the rest of us are, not to the same degree, but they’ve seen their bottom line go down. You don’t seem to understand business. If you can’t make a profit, you go under.

    • s c

OK, Am Lib, wannabe omniscient. Let’s do a quick history check. ALL tax cuts are bad, eh? A tax cut means you have a bad leader, eh? Tax cuts never do anything good for America, eh?
Ever heard of a guy named JFK? (John Fitzgerald Kennedy, for those who love to rant but refuse to be historically accurate). One of the first things JFK as president was to CUT TAXES.
Now that you’ve slammed and dissed JFK, you are morally obligated to turn in your Democrat/ultralib membership card, and stand with your nose in the nearest corner for an hour. No milk or cookies for you, young man! No gold star, and that revised history book you worship will be run through a shredder.

      • American Liberal

Sc… You really seem confused… I never said all tax cuts were bad…. But Just taxing the middle class and giving the top 2% tax cuts during a war that only benifits them is going to always be an economic disaster…. President Obama just gave Americas middle class the LARGEST TAX CUTS in history …. And will allow the Bush tax cuts to expire in 2011…. We need to put more money in the hands of the middle class to stimulate the economy…when the republicans are in power they always favor the rich… Were changing that, and it’s going to benifit you no matter how much you hold your breath and stomp your feet…your tantrums amuse me..

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Nano Twit,
If the tax cuts went to the top earners, then why, when my wife and I make less than 125,000.00 a year, did I get a cut???? I’m certainly not in the top 50% much less the top 10%!!!!

  • American Liberal

Rightwing neo conservative agend….keep doing what never works…

  • FlaJim

The drop in contributions to the GOP can be explained as simply as this: Conservatives, the base of the GOP, no longer trust the RNC and are contributing directly to candidates of their choice, as I do.

The RNC supported Arlen Specter right up to the bitter end, announced for RINO Charlie Crist early in the contest (he’s now 30 points behind), still love McCain, and are hoping Bennett in UT succeeds in the primary challenge.

We’re no longer blindly supporting those who receive the seal of approval from establishment GOP insiders at the RNC.

    • Ellen

FlaJim, I think your are right. Support the good guys and clean out the no accounts! Every good reason to GET out and vote. There is evil & greed in both camps!

    • JeffH

FlaJim, are you a carpenter because your very good at nailing it.

  • American Citizen

I read this morning where the progressives are planning on infiltrating the tea party rallies and doing things to make them look bad. I think some have already done that. Tea Party conservatives should watch out for them and take them out. You’ll know them by their signs and some of their actions. I’d love to be able to attend one of the rallies, but am not able to do so.

    • American Liberal

Progressives are planning to infiltrate Tea Bagger Rallys?… That’s not easy…. The Baggers men all look like Larry ” The Cable Guy”… And the bagger women look like Ernest Borgnine…pretty hard to look like a bagger

    • American Liberal

      Am. Citizen:

You are right!! This has been going on since Jan. They are infiltrating the TeaParty and wrecking havoc on what they are doing! I have believed for a long time that there have been “plants” in every Town Hall meeting and event to cause problems for the TeaParty!

      Bad John:
Just because Sarah Palin supports John McCain; does not mean that the TeaParty does!! The time for McCain to retire in near! Also, all the Members of Congress who belong to the DNS and voted for ObamaCare can expect to be retired!!

    • BigBadJohn

Dam good idea, maybe someone should take a shot at Obama so he round up all of the tea party people and send them to Gitmo……

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Hey goofball,

      SMEARING THE TEA PARTIES
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Opponents of the fiscally conservative tea party movement say they plan to infiltrate and dismantle the political group by trying to make its members appear to be racist, homophobic and moronic.
The Tea Party foes, bent on making the conservative group’s members appear to be “homophobes, racists or morons,” say they’ll be crashing Tea Party demonstrations nationwide this week.
A person named Jason Levin started the group and wants to exaggerate the unappealing qualities attributed to some Tea Party members to damage the public’s opinion of the entire anti-tax movement, made up of loosely affiliated groups and individuals.

      • JeffH

If you check it out, be prepared for anything..the safe seems safe to enter, but some of their comments read:
-The teaparty is mostly old people who want the young to pay for their medicare, but they don’t want to extend benefits to younger people (their children and grandchildren). These greedy old non-white loving bastards need to die already, they have done enough damage to this once great country.
-Don’t even try to act like you are some sort of a rogue fighting the system because you call yourself a Conservative. Nothing was wrong with the government according to you until Obama was elected you reactionary pricks.

I bet it burned you up real good when chickenhawk McCain lost to a negro. No wars to rally for, huh? Now you are stuck attending concerts where Shaun Hannity gives a $200 check to some veteran who had his legs blown off all in the name of charity where you paid $40 for a ticket x 1000 attendees. Real charitable.
-What’s your beef with Karl Marx?

        http://www.crashtheteaparty.org/
Are you a Capitalist…these are the nice ones…

  • Sandy

Steele needs to go. I noticed that when he gave his so-called apology for his spending, he had to read it from his notes. Not quite heart-felt I’d say, but rather something he was required to do to save his butt. His spending will continue, but will be less conspicuous now, he hopes.

  • American Liberal

And typical of the rightwing…. The Republicans have a morality meltdown so what do they do?… Blame president Obama…

    • Raggs

Fact… ACORN was the largest reason the housing market crashed due to forced subprime mortages through freedie and fanny for the poor…
obama as a lawyer and senator was one of the largest supporters of ACORN.

      • American Liberal

Wrong… Deregulation was the reason for the economic meltdown … Which is exactly where you republicans will go if you get the goverment back… The Banks weren’t required to knowingly give bad loans… It’s called responsibility …as usual you bark rightwing nonsense…

      • BigBadJohn

Check out the republican plan for the economy – more tax cuts.
Tax cuts are the reason we have a 12 trillion dollar national debt.
Reagan and Bush proved beyond a shadow of doubt that trickle down does not work – it only increases the national debt.

        Borrow and spend conservatives!

      • American Citizen

What don’t you understand about debt? Who takes care of the budget in your home? Debt is incurred when you spend more than you take in. Tax cuts historically bring in more money to the Government treasury. It’s the spending, wake up!!!

      • American Citizen

Unless I’m mistaken, the debt has tripled since the Democrats took over after the last election. Tax and spend Democrats.

      • BigBadJohn

American citizen. You are correct,Debt goes up when you take in less than you spend. So if you bring in less and spend the same, the debt goes up! No matter how you slice it, tax cuts are the same as spending increases.
Bush’s 400 billion dollar tax cut went straight to the national debt, it did not make money for the government. Reagan’s vice president, GH Bush, called trickle down “VooDoo economics”

You are wrong about debt going up three times in the last year – what are you smoking or who’s lies are you listening to? If you want to know the truth – go to the source:
        http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/BPDLogin?application=np

        FACT
2007-2008 Debt went up by 1.5 TRILLION
2008-2009 Debt went up by 1.6 TRILLION – this includes Bush’s bail out bills that he left to Obama

    • tedcrawford

Rant on o small one! If you are impressing yourself, then you are the only one!

2008 Market Crash Should be Investigated
By Jeff Lukens Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Almost two years after the mortgage crisis and stock market crash, no one seems to wonder about the “September surprise” that shifted the 2008 presidential election to an unknown leftist politician who had been elected to the Senate only two years before. A pulp-fiction writer could hardly have created a more contrived and bizarre story. But this was not make-believe. No, it is now our own gritty reality show that we only wish we could turn off.

The week of Sept. 15, 2008, was a debacle of huge proportions. On Monday, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy while other lending institutions lined up like dominoes teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. But the week was hardly over. On Thursday, an electronic run on the banks occurred. In an unprecedented move, the Treasury and the Federal Reserve had to act together to stop what had become a full-fledged panic. On Saturday, Sept. 20, The Wall Street Journal recounted events of that previous Thursday:

“Instead of lining up at bank windows, investors were unloading financial assets on their PCs. Credit markets had seized up, to the point that even routine daily settlements had stopped until banks had the actual securities or cash in hand.”

“Investors were rushing out of these [Treasury and Federal Reserve] funds—$105 billion out of $1.8 trillion on Thursday alone—which in turn caused the funds to redeem their commercial paper investments.”

“Issuers of that paper then had to find new funders, which in a pinch are banks. But jittery banks were refusing to accept paper from even worthy companies amid the panic, creating a larger credit breakdown. In response, Treasury will now insure nonbank money-market fund deposits for the next year, to slow money-fund redemptions.”

For such a large and coordinated exodus of funds to occur in U.S. markets, something more than individual “investors” at their PCs had to be in play. Large and well-managed hedge and mutual funds were undoubtedly behind much of the move.

A few months later on a C-Span interview, Rep. Paul Kanjorski, House Capital Markets Subcommittee Chair, described that day:

“On Thursday at about 11 o’clock in the morning the Federal Reserve noticed a tremendous drawdown of money market accounts in the United States , to the tune of $550 billion was being drawn out in a matter of an hour or two. The Treasury opened up its window to help. It pumped $105 billion in the system and quickly realized that they could not stem the tide; we were having an electronic run on the banks. They decided to close the operation, close down the money accounts and announce a guarantee of $250,000 per account so there wouldn’t be further panic out there.”

The $550 Billion withdrawn in an hour or two that Rep. Kanjorski refers to in his statement has never been independently confirmed or refuted.

In mid-September, John McCain was ahead of Barack Obama in some polls by about 3 percent. By Oct. 10, the S&P 500 Index had lost 25% of its value from what it had been a month before. The crash was a major calamity for the McCain Campaign. And now, with Obama in the White House, it has become a calamity for us all.

The fact remains that the identities of those who withdrew their money that week were never disclosed. And, knowingly or not, they created a panic that altered the course of the election. One can only wonder whether something more than normal market forces was at work.

Courtesy of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, the crisis came about by the uncertain value of subprime securities held by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, banks, saving and loans, and other lending institutions. A declining market in itself is not noteworthy, but to induce a panic in the midst of a presidential campaign, if ever proven, would be reprehensible and an outrage to the American electorate.

While the stock market collapse was a disaster for your average IRA or 401(k) account, some investors benefited handsomely. It is widely agreed that hedge funds profited by selling short the collapsing market in 2008, and chief among them was George Soros’ hedge fund. Soros may have personally had the motivation, method, and opportunity to trigger the crash.

Soros’ overseas-based hedge fund evades much scrutiny, and its activities that week left almost no trail. Could Soros and his hedge fund be behind many of the withdrawals of that week, and particularly on that Thursday? We need to know. The massive outflow of U.S. funds to offshore accounts that critical week during the campaign could be a coincidence, but it is doubtful.

George Soros is a multi-billionaire answerable to no one. Hastening a market meltdown to give the election to Barack Obama would fit his pattern of profiting while destroying the social order of his target country. Triggering a crash in 2008 would also serve his political investments.

Soros is obsessed with power. He wants a One World Government, redistribution of wealth, open borders, and universal health care. He is determined to change America forever by deconstructing its sovereignty and ability to defend itself. Soros was a huge backer of Barack Obama, and now his anointed president is determined to change America to their mutual view.

Soros made his fortune by short selling currencies and then pouring substantial amounts of his private wealth into organizations to subvert various nations. He nearly bankrupted the Bank of England by shorting the pound in 1992. He wrecked the Malaysian economy in 1998, and subsequently that of Indonesia as well. He is responsible for stirring-up instability in Africa, the Balkans, Eastern Europe , and the former Soviet republics.

Over the years, Soros has positioned himself to take control of the Democrat Party through the hundreds of 527 organizations he has helped financed. These organizations have become a “Shadow Party” unto themselves, and manipulate public opinion for their own end.

Among them: the National Education Association, ACORN, AFL-CIO, American Federation of Teachers, The Media Fund, the Open Society Institute, Planned Parenthood League, the Sierra Club, America Coming Together, the Huffington Post, Moveon.org. If a left-wing organization is in the news, it has probably received money from George Soros.

Why have the identities never been reported of those who withdrew funds that week? Shouldn’t there be even some curiosity about an event that wiped out the jobs and life savings of so many people? And why has there been no follow-up inquiry by into Rep. Kanjorski’s statement? There needs to be a public investigation concerning the amounts and offshore destinations of the funds withdrawn from U.S. markets that precipitated the crash.

Did an unwritten partnership exist between George Soros and Barack Obama? Could Soros, through Obama, be seeking a “velvet revolution” in the dismantling of our nation as he has done elsewhere? These questions need further investigation. With the Alinskyite tactics employed by Team Obama, none of this is beyond the realm of possibility.

Americans recoil at the thought of having their elections manipulated by outsiders. As long as Democrats control Congress, there surely will never be an effective inquiry into this affair. Perhaps a GOP victory this November will allow a thorough examination finally to begin. Add this to the many investigations the GOP will need to make when they finally take back Congress.

James A Graham, good post and well informed.

The “Shadow Party” is a term originally devised by journalists to describe “527″ political committees promoting Democratic Party agendas. It is here used more specifically to refer to the network of non-profit activist groups organized by George Soros and others to mobilize resources — money, get-out-the-vote drives, campaign advertising and policy iniatives — to elect Democratic candidates and guide the Democratic Party towards the left.http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/ShadowParty.asp

Who Is Behind Barack Obama’s Rise to Stardom?

Soros, through his Open Society Institute, funnels approximately $300 million a year into various liberal venues, including the influential MoveOn.org, which he owns. According to veteran researcher Anton Chaitkin, Soros also hand-picked Barack Obama to challenge Hillary Clinton (and ultimately defeat GOP nominee John McCain). On Sept. 5, 2008, he wrote, “Barack Obama came under special Soros sponsorship in the 2004 U.S. Senate race [and] raised $60,000 for his campaign.” After attaining victory, Obama met personally with Soros, then attended a fundraiser at his home.

Maybe people are just waking up?

From the Guardian, a British newspaper -

The Republicans are like frat boys in Animal House
Reckless, anarchic and strident, the American right is living in a parallel world where fear and rage drive out the facts

    Sunday 11 April 2010

In the classic teen movie Animal House there comes a moment when the ne’er-do-well students of the Delta fraternity finally realize their pranks have gone too far. Faced with expulsion from university, the most violent, antisocial drunkard of the group, Bluto Blutarsky (John Belushi), gives one last rousing, rambling speech to his crestfallen comrades. “Nothing is over until we decide it is,” he yells. “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, no!”

The other students look on confused. Bluto leads a charge but nobody follows. However, they soon fall in line after the fraternity’s leader, the far more respectable, presentable, all-round-cad, Otter (Tim Matheson), backs Bluto’s call to arms against the university authorities. “Bluto’s right,” he says. “Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards … I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.”

The Republican party, in particular, and American conservatism in general, have taken to operating in a similar manner to the Delta fraternity – increasingly reckless, anarchic and strident. Faced with defeat they respond with desperation. Only where the Deltas were motivated by ribaldry, conservatives are driven by rage.

On the one hand there are the Blutos – characterized by their contempt for even the most basic facts. Their assertions are often not only verifiably false but patently ridiculous. The very people who claim that Obama is a Muslim were the ones who fumed about his relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his pastor in Chicago. Muslims don’t have pastors. Last year the Investor’s Business Daily claimed that if the renowned scientist Stephen Hawking were British he would be dead: Hawking is British and alive.

These falsehoods are not limited to the fringes. A recent Harris poll reveals that a majority of Republicans believe Obama is a Muslim and a socialist who “wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one-world government”. A Daily Kos poll in January showed that about two-thirds of Republicans either believe or are not sure that Obama is “a racist who hates white people”, and more than half believe or are not sure that he was not born in the US and that he wants the terrorists to win.

So long as these people breathe the ever more fetid air of their own ecosystem – oxygen provided by Fox News – then these contradictions are of little concern or consequence to them. Cognitive dissonance is not the exception but the rule. But there is menace in this madness. A few weeks ago, shortly before the passing of the healthcare vote, conservative blogger Solomon Forell tweeted: “We’ll surely get over a bullet 2 Barack Obama’s head!” He added: “The Next American with a Clear Shot should drop Obama like a bad habit. 4get Blacks or his claim to be Black. Turn on Barack Obama.” Last week a man was detained for issuing death threats to Democratic senator Patty Murray. Speaking in Phoenix on a Tea Party tour, Joe the Plumber, recently spelt out his plan for dealing with illegal immigration: “Put a fence in and start shooting.”

So much for the Blutos. Far from reining them in, the Republican leadership increasingly reflects their excesses. Absent any legislative agenda or coherent ideological approach, they have spent the last two years crafting “a really futile and stupid gesture … on somebody’s part” that Otter would be proud of. Small government is a legitimate philosophical and political position. But in the hands of people who voted to bloat the deficit and unleash a huge state-grab of civil liberties, it is shorn of credibility. It isn’t government they don’t like; it’s Democrats in government.

So congressmen scream “liar” at the president and “baby killer” at their colleagues; senators repeat myths about death panels; and legislators stoke up crowds from the balconies during the healthcare debate. On Friday at the Southern Republican Leadership conference, Sarah Palin repeated her slogan: “Don’t Retreat, Reload.” This time she insisted it was “not a call for violence”. The fact she would have to make that explicit tells us something about how dire things have become.

The potential for this kind of rhetoric to produce an unthinkable calamity should not be underestimated. Last year a Homeland Security report, Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fuelling Resurgence in Radicalisation and Recruitment, concluded: “The economic downturn and the election of the first African-American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalisation and recruitment.”

Such people are on the fringes. But those fringes are growing. In any case, it only takes one angry person with a gun to make the difference. If such a person were to emerge, they would not be acting alone. Thousands of others, from the blogosphere to Congress, have colluded in creating an alternative reality that would explain, if not justify, their actions. After all, if Obama truly were a foreign-born, white-hating, terrorist sympathiser who has usurped the presidency, drastic action would make sense.

Meanwhile, the brazen disregard for basic facts goes all the way to the top. The 2008 presidential contender John McCain recently insisted he never considered himself a “maverick”, even though one of his books is subtitled The Education of an American Maverick, and he called himself “the original maverick” in campaign ads. It used to be assumed this was the tail wagging the dog. But by increments it is turning into an entirely new breed of dog. Establishment Republicans are not running away from Palin’s wing of the party but towards it. McCain needed her endorsement to fight off a Tea Party challenge in Arizona.

This trend is not new. Ever since the Republican election rallies of 2008, where Obama’s name provoked screams of “traitor” and “terrorist”, this dialectic between leadership and base, margins and mainstream, populist reaction and legislative response, has been all too evident. Far from subsiding, the contradictions have sharpened.

Whereas in 2008 McCain grabbed the microphone from an audience member’s hand and corrected her after she said she didn’t trust Obama “because he’s an Arab”, the metaphorical mic has now been returned to her and she has been ushered to centre stage.

Having pitted fear against hope and lost, the Republican leadership has come up with no better alternative than to keep doubling down on fear. None of this puts food on Blutos’ tables, but it does keep them angry. For those who peddle in rumour and angst, this is a lucrative market indeed. In a world where facts don’t matter, their fears can never truly be assuaged.

Quite how reality will intrude into this parallel universe is as of yet unclear. But it will. Now that healthcare legislation has been passed, people will see that the state does not kill their grandmothers and most Republican voters will see their healthcare costs fall. This week there will be an anti-tax rally – most of the protesters on it will actually see their taxes lowered by the Obama administration.

And how would the Republican party explain to most of its supporters that while their living standards stagnated or declined under George Bush they are set to improve under Obama?

As Otter explained to one of the fraternity after trashing his brother’s car: “You f***ed up … you trusted us!”

Dear BigBadJohn, How dare you make me laugh when I’m trying to be serious!!!!! LOL Thank you

  • Carol

I believe the reason the RNC isn’t seeing the donations is because they are trying to shove rhino candidates down our throat. I hear more and more people saying that they have quit giving to the RNC and are now giving to the conservative candidate of their choice.

    • momof4

      Carol,
True, that is what we have been doing. I can’t stand to see my money going to RHINOS. So we just support rock solid conservatives.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        momof4,
I’m holding on to my donations till I see if Duncan Hunter runs. If not, I’ll vote for the most conservative of the two!!! If Obummer runs we know what party that will be!!!

  • James

Any congressman who has mis-used his office for personal gain or pleasure, should be voted out. When in doubt, vote ‘em out!

      James you are right.

Wow. It does not take long to listen to Victoria and figure out she is a Fox watcher. Marxist, Black President. Grow up. sonnythomas.com If this teabagger is your cup of tea, women are being taken back years. Funny, not many comments here. Loss for words. Check out his web page. I think that all is “stuff” is all part of the Marxist(Anti-Messiah) strategy to destroy the economy! We get a politically-correct Marxist, Black President, who was able to win by the white women vote, says statistics! If anyone has walked down any street in America, it’s obvious that the people who got the vote at the same time(1912) with the advent of Marxism to intellectual circles have been working overtime to destroy the “real” Israel(Judah is not Israel), intentionally or intentionally! No matter the the Bible commanded Israel in Deuteronomy 17:15 not to put a “foreigner”(non-Israelite) over them as ruler! Nothing has changed since the Garden of Eden has it? Soon will rise Yahweh’s(The inspired Biblical language is “Hebrew” by the way(Acts 26:14 & Zeph. 3:9)and not about Zeus!)two-witnesses come to punish Israel and call out the set-apart ones to be saved from the 2nd Inquisition in the latter days! Watch!

    • EltonJ

I really think that the Republicans are in the same boat as the Democrats, although you see it in the Democrats more. The two parties are headed towards meltdown.

I think you’ll see two new parties when the mess is over: A conservative party and a progressive party. Although the two parties are so much alike you can’t tell the difference between the two. GF said that she’d was ready to move to Canada if McCain got into office. I’d really should have followed her inclination this year. :p

Obama promised change. It’s just politics. As usual.

      • denniso

Obama is hardly politics as usual…if he was there wouldn’t be the backlash and outrage from the Repubs. He managed to get a healthcare bill passed after 100 yrs of others trying…hardly politics as usual.

      • EltonJ

Well, if we vote for another Pathological Prevaricator as our next president, I’m going to scream. We don’t need some one as pathologically prevaricating as our current pres.

    • American Liberal

Victor… I’m no more impressed with your Bible fantasys than I am with Harry Potter…. Both deal in fiction and fantasy…

      • JeffH

Conservative interests know that Liberals are most adept at breaking their own necks with their tongues.

  • American Liberal

The Republicans are just being themselves….hypocrites…same with the Tea Baggers.. Most of the country knows their Morality and Christianity is an act…

    • EltonJ

Yes, American Liberal, we know you’re a tea-bagger.

      • Raggs

        Yeah and kool-aid drinker…

      • denniso

The Repubs will be surprised in Nov when they don’t take over congress. They are over reaching,w/ the help of the extremists in the party, and the leaders are afraid to rein them in. As the ‘tea party’ zealots and the more wacko Repubs go more extreme, the independents and moderates are being scared off and will stay away from the party.
The talk of armed revolution and violence against some Dems will only ensure the Repubs fail.

      • zack

denniso, hell man the biggest part of the ones that are upset are the democrats. They think obama is an idiot also.

Man I am a registered democrat myself, my whole family, everyone in my Church, all the democrats I have talked to says get that idiot out of the Whitehouse before he gets us all nuked.

      • zack

All the demos. I have talked to are going to vote them all out. The democrats don’t have a chance in November. Open your eyes, and clean out your ears, and you will see.

    • JeffH

      Polly want a cracker? baaarrraaaccckkk!

      • coal miner

        Jeffh,

        Yes,you can have food stamps.

  • s c

Maybe the ‘Republicans’ made enough people mad that donations don’t seem like a good idea. In the case of Steele, once could say that it’s not a good idea for a ‘Republican’ to act like a Democrat.
Assuming that no one put a gun to Steele’s head and told him to act like a Democrat ‘or else,’ maybe he can explain himself. In the interim, Steele and the rest of the airheads at the RNC need a healthy dose of reality (and a slap or two in the face).
They’ve taken us for granted for way too long. I can live with the idea of lighting a fire under these twits so they’ll take a stand or do a ‘MacArthur’ and just fade away. Act like a Democrat, and get treated like one.
As a last resort, if he’s having a problem focusing, let Steele become a Democrat. He’d have access to easy money, and he could act like a community organizer one day and someone who cares about America the next day.

    • denniso

I’m bemused by your twisted logic that states that Steele ‘acted like a Democrat’…sure, blame the Dems for the Repub scandals. I’m enjoying watching the increasingly radical Repub party self destruct and devour one another at a time when they’re so sure they have the advantage in Nov…keep it up you hypocritical phonies…

    • http://yahoo ellodeb

You’re right s c Steele was just acting like everyone else in the fed. gov. He has admitted to doing the wrong thing, he should step aside and let someone who will do the right thing step up. We will see, personally I’ve been hoping that Steele would be better than the norm.

    • Ken

Why should we care if Steele spends thousands on plain trips while nobody seems to mind when the wicked witch of the west (Pelosi) spends millions of tax payer dollars flying home in her new jet. What hypocrites!!!
