Essential Oil Could Be Used To Combat MRSA

Thyme essential oil could be used to combat MRSA, study says Individuals who develop an infection but would prefer to use a natural medication instead of a pharmaceutical drug may be interested to learn that essential oils have been shown to have anitbacterial properties.

Greek scientists have studied these natural ingredients and found that the essential oils obtained from thyme were the most effective in almost completely killing bacteria such as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is responsible for extremely difficult to treat hospital infections.

Lead researcher professor Yiannis Samaras from the Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands, said that these results are important not only because essential oils are cheaper than standard drugs, but also because "decreased use of antibiotics will help minimize the risk of new strains of antibiotic resistant micro-organisms emerging."

Essential oils have been recognized for hundreds of years for their therapeutic properties. For example, Australian aborigines used tea tree oil to treat colds, sore throats, skin infections and insect bites.

    I found in my research that staph feeds off of and thrives in an acid environment. I put my husband on an alkiline diet. You can get test strips for cheap at any drug store to test body acidity. He was quite acidic. I found also that they immune system is down in these cases, so I put him on immune boosters…vit. C, E, D, and acia juice. Also zinc, and people who have staph and other skin problems are low in magnesium, so I give him that. Then the most important suppliment is tumeric. We started taking all those 2x per day. Now he takes them once a day minus the acai. He has had no more break outs.

    What natural products did you use for the staph boils? Infection seems to be a huge problem is my area with one man having 17 operations in 8 years trying to get rid of an infection in his kenee after a replacement.

    My husband was treated twice with antibiotics for his staph boils. They came back both times. The only way we have been able to keep him staph free is by natural methods.

    I might suggest that a natural oil such as this be looked at as an adjunct to treatment with antibiotics. These types of oils may be able to help the strength and effectiveness of the antibiotics but never a substitute for such a dangerous organism that is difficult to treat and kill. Organisms such as this -with newer antibiotics – are the very reason we all benefit from research and development of the newer better medications/antibiotics that are able to keep up the bacteria’s own ability to change itself and become resistant to the current antibiotics. It is also a reminder to all of us practicing to be judicious in the use of antibiotics – only use when necessary.

    I heard on the radio the other day that MRSA was going to be the infection to treat that would rival the AIDS epidemic in the next few years.
    You stated that the essential oils are cheaper than the standard drugs. The one lady that was taking drugs for MRSA couldn’t afford her drug that cost $6,000. a week. Yes six thousand dollars a week. So we definitely need some good research on this.

      More than a year ago I corresponded with the scientist in New Zealand who has done most of the pioneering research on the medicinal properties of Manuka Honey. Not all Manuka is medicinal but that Manuka which is rated the highest, over 500+ has been known to stop MRSA in it’s tracks. I’ve even had some interesting results with Manuka that was of lesser quality than that (but not with MRSA of course).
