Democrats won't negotiate with Stupak, will move forward with reconciliation on healthcare bill As the deadline approaches for the Senate vote on healthcare reform, Democratic leaders have confirmed their plan to move forward on the bill using a fast-track legislative tactic known as budget reconciliation.

They have also said they will stop trying to work out a deal with Representative Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) regarding federal funding for abortions.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), made the reconciliation announcement—which will allow Democrats to pass the bill with 51 votes, instead of the usual threshold of 60—in his letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday.

“We will finish the job,” Reid said in the letter, adding that “we will do so by revising individual elements of the bills both houses of Congress passed last year, and we plan to use the regular budget reconciliation process that the Republican caucus has used many times.”

As federal funding for abortions remains a sticking point, and as the latest round of negotiations with the proponent of an amendment that would ban it have come to a naught, Democratic leaders have said they will no longer try to negotiate with Stupak.

Commentators have said this suggests the Democratic leadership believes there aren’t enough pro-life Democrats that will follow Stupak in voting against the bill, something the latter disputes.

      Raggs I watched the clip – and unless I am missing something again not sure what.
      I understand they want a national ID. I understand that this is the same as what the Nazi’s did in Germany, I understand that this is another intrusive hand into our lives. If they really wanted to do something good for the American people well we already have ID’s in place, one for instance is the voter cards (if legal and not copied) can have our pictures put on them to verify the owner and that would confirm we were legal citizens. I don’t think I am being fooled. If they really wanted to stop illegal’s they would enforce the laws already in place. However, in an article yesterday Napolitano said that she was withholding funds for border control. I understand about the warnings of the chip and mark on forehead and I am aware to beaware of the one that would come before…..etc. So how does this confirm the remark that was made about women and blacks being the destruction of mankind? I am a woman and am fighting like heck for our freedoms and the safety of all our children. I am not black but I am sure they are doing the same. I am just sick and tired of all the hate, hate, hate. I think that if you can’t be the solution at least don’t be the problem!
      I did not vote for arrogant O, but when he was voted in (even though now I question if all those votes were legal)I was happy for America that we finally stepped up and saw beyond color. I really think that is the real reason people voted for him.

    Yesterday the hysteria was about them using the Slaughter Rule, today we are back to the Reconciliation tactic. One day we hear from the queen P woman that they have the votes on the same day another say’s no they don’t – WHAT THE HECK! What do you believe?

    And all of you that want to quote the bible as if you have had some revelatioin – there was also a caution there that said “you will hear from many with false and misleading information, becareful what you believe” and “let not your heart be troubled.” I have read the bible and I have never come across anything that said it was white women or black people that will bring us down so stop spreading your hate and wooooooe! I don’t know what your are smoking or maybe you should and get some help or respond with where it say’s what you claim.

But you know that will never happen because they get everything we US citizens have to pay for FREE. Like this whole HealthCare Reform is for the Illegals, not US citizens. We are going to have to pay more for it, get taxed if we have it, get fined if we don’t have , but hey, the freaking Illegals get it ALL FOR FREE. This is not HealthCare Reform, it is HealthCare fraud at its best. I have been in HealthCare field for 25 years and have not seen a Government Run Program done correclty. There is more fraud than anything else, and we are supposed to want the Government to run all of our HealthCare, no thanks. Legislatures are not even bound by any of this Bill, so why should we take it or be made to bend over and accept it?

    Included in this will be a national I.D. which will give the government full control over everything in your life such as bank account info, they will control what you purchase and when. This I.D. will have all of your personal information on it for the government to use against you and forceably control you.

    If reconciliation is only used to balance the budget, why or how can it be used to pass healthcare? Can this be challenged now, or do we have to wait until it is passed into law to have the Supreme Court make a decision on this?

        angel, I don’t think they’re planning to change the Constitution in order to use this sleazy tactic. The House is just going to craft its own rule to use it if they can’t get enough Democrats to vote for the bill. The tactic is called the “Slaughter Solution.” It’s named after a liberal Congresswoman, Louise Slaughter (D-NY), who dreamed it up. If they end up using it to pass the healthcare bill, it could face a constitutional challenge in the Supreme Court. Here’s a link that explains it more in detail:

        Why won’t the republicans co-operator? It is time for them to stop acting like spoiled brats! We sent them to Washington to do a job now it’s time for to get to work.They have not done any thing useful in the last 15 months. they have cried and belly ached because every thing hasn’t gone there way.

        You have bought into a lie that has been propagated by the Dems. They say the Repubs won’t co-operate, but the Repubs have been ignored totally, and left out of all of the processes. They have not been given a chance to co-operate. Obama and his minions have made it clear if you want to co-operate, then shut up and vote yes. Wow, that’s some great choice. Ignore anything they say, and demand they vote yes. We are being dictated to, not represented. This are sad sad times.

        You also need to be aware that most of Obama’s top advisers are Socialists, and Communists. The “Change” that Obama is bringing, is to take us down to a third World Country status. BEWARE!

      The “will of the people” is whatever our politicians says is our will. They’ll do whatever we want them to do AFTER they tell us what it is we want them to do.

      Robin from, No, it can’t be challenged before it becomes law. It is true though that no one needs to obey an unconstitutional law, and the part that requires an individual to purchase a healthcare plan is patently unconstitutional. The federal government has no power to force citizens to do something they feel would be good for them, that is a decision each citizen is free to make for him/herself.

      I agree, but corruption springs ahead of people as the machines take over. Political, and voting!

      The archaic Rules need to be modified to get honest elections, somehow. But the use of computers has opened the way to electronic pre-rigging and easy changing of results in mid stream by “repairmen” called in when needed.

      “Progress” is not always the most desirable!!

      Maybe we need to have identical sized coloured stones and have them put in containers and weighed in the presence of witnesses?

        My voting has been to get all the information I could, and vote for those who agree with me on issues. Often in the minority, and sometimes information is hard to get, leaving me to vote for the most conservative party or person, on GP.

        But then, I had a family member run for office several times, and became aware of what goes on. How minority votes are tossed by vote-watchers for the DemoPublicans. And how ballots were spoiled to avoid counting by the DemoPublicans.

        Nowadays it is simpler, just program the computers in the voting machines; and if you are still losing, send in the repairmen, to reprogram the results! And even pay illegals to vote “right” and often!
