John McCain reelection bid faces challenge from the right Although commentators believe Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) should be able to defend his seat in this year’s midterm elections, some of his GOP challengers appear to be attracting growing public and media attention.

In particular, the recent announcement by former congressman J.D. Hayworth that he would challenge the incumbent for the party nomination has drawn attention on account of the jabs exchanged by the two rivals.

At a news conference in Phoenix, Hayworth, who is also a former conservative talk show host, said that there are "two John McCains—the one who campaigns like a conservative and the one who legislates like a liberal."

In response, the 2008 GOP presidential candidate accused Hayworth of "blatant lies and fabrications," and McCain’s team confirmed that they are prepared to call him out on his congressional record when he allegedly voted for bills that contained earmarks and broke a term-limits pledge, according to NationalJournal.com.

At 73, McCain is running for his fifth term in the Senate and to date has garnered endorsements from former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, as well as Sarah Palin, his former vice presidential running mate.

The GOP primary is scheduled for Aug. 24.

    McCain has served his time and is now out of step in a number of areas, his barbwire crotch rash has now become to obvious for most Real Republicans and Hayworth speaks the lingo, walks the walk conservatives want to see and hear.

    I couldn’t support John for Prez and I won’t support him now…I thank him for his service and I hope he steps aside.

    John McCain is a great man. His service to our country proves that. However, I believe it is time for him to step out of limelight and step down from politics. He should ‘quit’ now, before being defeated. He is much too liberal to be a Republican, and I am sure the Dems wouldn’t want him. He needs to enjoy his senior years. He has made his place in history. Time to go…

    not support him again. He is a lefty in righty clothing! I believe
    it’s not worth explaning myself! The other thing is: I think of
    Congress and the Senate as two terms limit. These people get into
    office and forget who put them there. They get POWER HUNGRY and
    forget who they represent! We need new blood in our Govt. People
    that understand and care about the people they are supposed to.

        Yes, he shouldn’t have participated in the earmark fiasco, but I know very few people who have the fortitude to be ideologically pure to the point that they would put themselves in imminent danger. In his case the danger would be that he might get voted out if his constituents saw everybody else partaking of the feast and his district being left out.
        That’s what makes it so difficult to get off of the runaway train of Government Spending.
        I never said this battle would be easy.

    I will not support McCain in my vote for president and sure hope that the republican party has better sense for a candidate for this upcoming presidential election. I did vote for him here in Virginia but next round it very well may be a write in nomination. Same would go for Sarah Pallin.

    McCain should have retired [or defected to the Democrats] years ago. We do not need anyone who poses as a maverick, and yet stoops to acting like a boy toy for the prostitute media.
    He’s too self-centered to understand that the media caters to those who are rockhead libs and kooks [aka useful idiots].
    McCain’s actions and lukewarm beliefs amount to proof that no one can afford to look up to a wishy-washy appeaser who wants to be seen as a conservative – yet never hesitates to act like an ultraliberal progressive (or worse).

    It is my hope as an Arizonian that John McCain retires whether by loss of the election or by just retiring. He is not the man that I voted for many years ago and I am tired of his continuous support of Democrat legislation. He is closer to his liberal buddies than his own party members. J.D. Hayworth is a fine man with experience in the House of Representatives and he is a true conservative republican.
    John needs to take care of his own camp with a wife that has come out in public as supporting Gay Marriage, etc., etc.. It is time for a change in Arizona and the Senate

    It’s time we looked at some salient facts concerning Senator J. McCain and his strutting about as a true blue American patriot. He was a hero of mine for a long time because I too spent a year in So. Viet Nam as a Navy Corpsman during the Tet Offensive months. When I heard his daughter spout off her Leftist progressive views I realized I must let it go. If she reflects the dark light she learned at his knee he does not represent anything I went to Viet Nam to defend. So, “G’bye, John, I thrust you away after what you’ve become and who you have aligned with.” He’s become like the Scot who turned Braveheart over to the English crown.
    How do I know? He put a bill called Dietary Supplement Safety Act (DSSA) on the table in the Senate.
    ObamaCare is the perfect tool to wreak havoc on an already dreadful disease situation in our land. The FDA and government meddling has made disease a growth industry. Do you think it can be a healthy situation that providing care for sick people is among the fastest growing business endavors in our culture? If there is more and more profit in taking care of disease it can only mean that we have more and more and sicker and sicker citizens. It can only mean that somebody expects and plans to make disease more widespread and a good long-term investment. O’care will force you into the hands of an assembly line, impersonal, careless, government, patient handling system that processes you like a turkey farm. They won’t want you doing anything to interfere with where you are when the cookie-cutter comes down…like making your own health decisions.
    That’s where McCain’s DSSA fits into the picture. You see, nutritional science has made great leaps recently such that people are learning how to protect THEMSELVES with healthful information, practices and products. Health is not costly and becomes increasingly thrifty and liberating – not what people want who profit when they can make diseases rule. So, the disease mongers bought McCain’s last campaign…he owes.
    His bill purports to be aimed at steroid “doping” pro athletes who were using steroids loaded in “supplements”. Guess again. The bill does nothing except strip you of any possibility of getting access to information, products or professionals oriented to cost effective wellness and prevention strategies.
    For example, the H1N1 flu vaccines were strangely slow in coming out when the swines expected the “pandemic” to be well under way. It was expected there would be panic in the streets for the vaccine. Now…do you know that if your blood levels of Vitamin D3 are high enough and you eat reasonably it makes you virtually immune to viral infection—and a host of degenerative diseases? Who needs vaccines that don’t arrive in time? Wonder why they want you to think it’s all just fate who gets sick? Nothing you can do about it? Think you need Obama to save you? Vitamin D3 can free you from that horrid fear – if you prepare for a few months before flu season.
    It seems John McCain doesn’t want you and your family protected and healthy… no matter what he SAYS. His DSSA bill says the opposite. So, how many other things will he SAY but intend the OPPOSITE? You Arizonans, is that good for your state or the Senate of the U.S.A.?

      Is Hayworth against DSSA? I am fed up with both McCain and the FDA. The last thing we need is for the FDA to have more power.

      Actually, the FDA should look at the safety of dietary supplements, as it can be downright dangerous to take one that doesn’t mix well with another drug you may be taking. There are warnings about this. When I was going through chemo, I had to list all drugs I was taking as well as any herbal supplements and NSAIDS. Any doctor worth his or her salt does the same thing when trying to decide what drug may help you with your health problem.

    The time is way past to clean out Congress and get some new blood that will follow what is best for this country instead of what is best for getting re-elected. Close the borders, no amnesty for illegals, term limits, fiscal responsibility (if you don’t have it …. don’t spend it), and vote out the attorneys (they have been trained to steal!)
    The present financial mess didn’t just happen. Congress has been allowing it for more than half a century. We need a new party that has read the Constitution and will follow what it says. Taking payoffs or bribes should be a hanging offense!! I don’t see anything in the Constitution about executive orders or czars ….. why is it still allowed??

    My thought is that Chris Simcox was possibly the best candidate of the several running for the Republican nomination and now I hear he is throwing in the towel and supporting J.D. Hayworth. J.D. Hayworth is a good guy but he also voted for earmarks while in the congress. Are there any politicians besides Ron Paul who will refuse to vote for earmarks or pork barrel spending? Not living in Arizona I don’t know the track record of the other candidates but now that Simcox is out it may be that J.D. Hayworth has the best chance against McCain. J.D. lived for a few years in upstate SC and is a very likeable guy and I hope he will be a real fiscal conservative in the Senate, even stingy when it comes to spending. Will our Republic even last until 2012?

Luckily we now have the internet to be able to verify statements such as yours. Ron Paul did take earmarks. Nobody’s perfect, not even the Conservatives!!

So, let me get this right…compassion is giving govt money to people who need it (food stamps, utility vouchers, free health care, etc.) So, I suppose the govt just prints up lots of money, then everyone who “needs” it will get it. But, noooo, the govt cannot just “print money”. It must raise money through taxes. Meaning it MUST confiscate earnings from one to “give” to another, but it must be done “compassionately”. Good plan…I have a better idea, all you compassionate people take some of your money and give it those less fortunate people.         Conservative, he let me down when he got those earmarks, that’s why I know. I am watching all those who proclaim to be for small government, while in reality, they act just like the rest. Take a look at the 2009 Omnibus spending bill, you won’t be happy with all the republicans and the amounts they took. They did take the most. I think they had 6 of the top 10 amounts. They are hypocrites. If you are going to take money, don’t critize the other guys for doing the same darn thing.

        Some earmarks are good, such as for road, bridges, etc., which help all the people in the state. The state is getting back some of the money Washington takes from each. But I don’t think any state should get back more that it gives. That’s why taxes need to be reduced drastically. I’m not sure why we even need the Federal Government anymore as the states can take care of their own people if allowed to as the Constitution states. The Federal Government constitutionally has only a few obligations to the country, the greatest of which is the security of the country. The Fed has grabbed powers that do not belong to it and the states have meekly rolled over and let it happen.

        And I think you are being too hard on McCain,he’s been a stalwart for your party and even(sadly) helped get Bush elected twice…he’s also got quite a bit of power in the senate,something that a new guy/gal wouldn’t have. You’re hurting your own cause by dumping on McCain.

He is well liked by the repub and dems in Orlando. We have so much corruption in the state that when he used his own money to get elected, people knew that he couldn’t be bought by the normal lobbyists. He doesn’t owe anybody anything, so he does represent the masses. He did help my neighbor when she couldn’t get Ginny Brown-Waite to help with an issue, even though he isn’t our rep.and she wasn’t a Dem, so I guess he must be fair.

        It’s rather striking and telling of the repub party that only 1 yr after the election they are turning on their presidential canditate. It shows how far the party is moving to the right,all the while they are screaming for obama to move to the center,which they’ve totally vacated. McCain is a decent guy who has fought for his party for decades..he’s a true war hero,unlike any of the other repubs,so it’s strange that he’s being attacked by the so called ‘conservatives’.

        If this is a sign of the unhealthy nature of the Repub party,then I say good,they’re falling apart and eating their own…but to prefer people like Beck,Palin and Limbaugh to McCain,someone who actually tries to work at something real, is just amazing.

        TO THE RIGHT is where the Republican party belongs. After all, they are SUPPOSED to be the CONSERVATIVE party. In recent years, however, they have become a left-leaning moderate party, which is why I am no longer a Republican but an Independent and probably why they lost their majority in both houses of Congress as the majority of people in this country identify themselves as conservative. As for turning on McCain one year after the election, conservatives who still call themselves Republicans never liked him as a candidate in the first place. Many only decided to vote for him after he picked Palin as his running mate. Their votes were more for her than him. Unless a Republican can convince me that they are TRUE conservatives I won’t vote for them any more than I’d vote for a Democrat, since I don’t believe there is any such thing as a conservative Democrat and I will only vote for conservatives.

        Harold, if the majority of people were Conservatives, you would have McCain as President. Your statement is false. Most Americans are middle of the road, with no where to go.

        As I didn’t want to vote for either of the men running, I voted for Sarah Palin as I’m sure a lot of us did.

    I say let the old turncoat, fence rider waste his time and money and run. Who ever runs against him in the primary will win hands down or should anyway. Let the voters of Arizona tell that wishy-washy wimp just how they feel. If they want that kind of so called conservative in office again then that is their problem. I would hope the good people of Arizona are much smarter than that!

      Barb- Most of the Republican and Independent voters in Arizona have
      long since taken notice of McCain’s RINO ways. He may have been a true conservative when he first went to Washington, but the air there seems to be toxic. Few escape with their honor and truthfulness in tact. J.D.HAYWORTH IS ONE OF THOSE FEW. The people of Arizona have seen the light!! Many of those who voted for McCain for Pres. did so in the manner attributed by his own mother. “They’ll hold their nose and vore for John”. Indeed, we did only because we recognized OBAMA as the leftist/socialist/marxist that we see today. Anyone who cares about America should do all they can to help J.D.HAYWORTH – THE RAREST OF ALL PEOPLE IN POLITICS- A MAN WHO TELLS THE TRUTH!!!

      I’m making a prediction……both JD and McCain will be shocked when the voters pick Jim Deakin….the voters will see his name on the ballot and since he isn’t the luke warm, change my mind with the wind, McCain or the pork eating JD….they will vote for JIM DEAKIN!!!!
